HAVING A SENSE OF YOUR OWN COUNTRY’S CHARACTER:  The Brit View

HAVING A SENSE OF YOUR OWN COUNTRY’S CHARACTER:  The Brit View

I found this of particular interest, and have done a bit of out of context editing. Which doesn’t change her meaning at all. Anyway, please check the link for the rest of her editorial.  She isn’t quite as conserv. as I’d like her to be, but then again she isn’t isn’t exactly a moonbat lib. either.  Is there such a thing as a lib/con?  Nah..

We don’t need to define Britishness
By Janet Daley

Last Updated: 12:01am GMT 18/02/2008

British national identity is becoming more and more like the weather: everybody talks about it but nobody can do anything about it. And come to think of it, it is especially like British weather: so tepid most of the time that it is difficult to describe.

This is not necessarily a problem: having a sense of your own country’s character as a vague, largely invisible thing which hums away quietly in the background. Until, of course, the woolly, taken-for-granted conception is challenged by an internal threat which makes use of precisely that amorphous lack of definition to create malignant - potentially lethal - social divisions.

And that is where we find ourselves. Last week’s report from the Royal United Service Institute went so far as to say that Britain’s lack of clear conviction over the value of its identity and political culture had left it a “soft target” for terrorism - which is not the same thing as being soft on terrorism, as some sections of the media concluded.

The British security services are among the few national agencies not lacking a clear set of objectives. They are not soft on terrorism.

The real argument of the RUSI study was that Britain was leaving itself open to the recruitment of Islamist terrorists by its failure to instil a confident, graspable sense of what this nation believes and stands for, and of what exactly it means to belong here.

Americans are unlike almost all other peoples of the world in that they all either are themselves, or are descended from, people who went to the country as an act of will (apart from those who were taken there against their will whose descendants, unsurprisingly, have had more difficulty in assimilating than almost all later migrant groups).

This makes them ideal subjects for the great 18th-century Enlightenment experiment: a newly invented country with a carefully devised written constitution and a self-conscious assumption of an identity that was defined in deliberate rebellion against an old aristocratic order.

To settle in the US is, in effect, to sign the “social contract” that the founding fathers envisaged: accept the rules and the principles on which this country is established and you can belong here. That’s the deal that is spelt out very clearly to every prospective citizen and, for the most part, it works. Older nations that chose to redefine themselves by overthrowing their history - such as France, where the revolution turned into the Terror - have had less happy results.

Britain is particularly ill-suited to adopting the apparatus of a revolutionary republic.

CDC tests confirm FEMA trailers are toxic

Agency to relocate Gulf Coast residents because of formaldehyde fumes

image

news source

More than two years after residents of FEMA trailers deployed along the Mississippi Gulf Coast began complaining of breathing difficulties, nosebleeds and persistent headaches, U.S. health officials announced Thursday that long-awaited government tests found potentially hazardous levels of toxic formaldehyde gas in both travel trailers and mobile homes provided by the agency.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, which requested the testing by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said it would work aggressively to relocate all residents of the temporary housing as soon as possible.

Levels of formaldehyde gas in 519 trailer and mobile homes tested in Louisiana and Mississippi were — on average — about five times what people are exposed to in most modern homes, the CDC reported. In some trailers, the levels were nearly 40 times customary exposure levels, raising fears that residents could suffer respiratory problems and potentially other long-term health effects, it said.

The Sierra Club began warning about formaldehyde levels in travel trailers by early 2006, after conducting its own air-quality tests. FEMA officials initially dismissed the environmental group’s testing, saying the trailers conformed to industry standards.

Formaldehyde is used in a wide variety of products, including composite wood and plywood panels used to manufacture the thousands of travel trailers and mobile homes purchased by FEMA after the storms.

There are no federal safety standard for formaldehyde fumes in homes or travel trailers, though the Department of Housing and Urban Development regulates the presence of the chemical in the manufacture of mobile homes.

In addition to causing respiratory ailments, formaldehyde is considered a human carcinogen, or cancer-causing substance, by the International Agency for Research on Cancer and a probable human carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Paulison said it had not yet been decided whether the agency would force residents living in FEMA trailers or mobile homes on private property — such as homeowners overseeing the rebuilding of a house — to leave.

He also vowed that FEMA would no longer use travel trailers to house disaster victims.

We will not ever use trailers again,” he said. “… That is not a good housing alternative for us.”

This is pretty much the same story we wrote about several months ago. I don’t work for a lumber company, but I do know that plywood, MDF, paneling, and insulation can be made without using urea-formaldehyde based resins. If a trailer making company came up with a couple models that could be “certified formaldehyde free” they could make millions. MILLIONS. But they would have to work with the government to develop a forward plan. You can’t build 100,000 trailers overnight. No, somehow the government has to stockpile them. And at the same time perhaps outlaw formaldehyde as an ingredient in building supplies?

oops they did it again

Islamic Jihadi Ayman Atallah Fayed Splatfest

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - A powerful blast went off in the house of a senior Islamic Jihad activist Friday, killing him, his wife and daughter, along with three neighbors, medics and an Islamic Jihad spokesman said.

Islamic Jihad claimed Israeli warplanes struck the home of Ayman Atallah Fayed. Israel denied it had launched any airstrike in the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza where Fayed lived. Hamas police said the cause of the blast was not clear.

Witnesses reported seeing fragments of what looked like locally produced rockets at the scene, suggesting the house may have been used to store arms.

Islamic Jihad said Fayed was among the dead, and that the group would carry out reprisal attacks against Israel.

Fayed was a senior member of the Islamic Jihad military wing. Israel routinely targets top militants in airstrikes but Israel denied any such strike on Friday.

The three-story house was flattened by the blast and six nearby homes were badly damaged, witnesses said. At least 40 people were hurt, including 12 who were in critical condition.

Gaza City is built out of steel and concrete, so this must have been quite the blast. My guess is that some fumble-fingered chucklehead, probably first cousin to the one who feel down the stairs the other week while carrying a bomb, saw a big red button and wondered what it did. Oops. Scratch yet another terrorist leader and his crew.

Yalla Ya Nasrallah, Ya Kahlb! Round Two?

Hezbollah chief threatens Israel

one source out of many
eh, WTH. Let’s make it two sources

BEIRUT, Lebanon - The chief of Hezbollah told throngs of supporters at a funeral for slain commander Imad Mughniyeh his group would retaliate against Israeli targets anywhere in the world after accusing the Jewish state of killing the militant.

Israel ordered its military, embassies and Jewish institutions overseas to go on alert earlier in the day, fearing revenge attacks for the car bomb that killed Mughniyeh Tuesday night in Damascus. The former Hezbollah security chief was one of world’s most wanted fugitives, accused of masterminding attacks that killed hundreds of Americans in Lebanon in the 1980s.

Hezbollah and its Iranian backers blamed Israel for killing Mughniyeh but Israel denied involvement.

In a fiery, videotaped eulogy broadcast on a giant screen to tens of thousands attending the south Beirut funeral, Nasrallah said Israel had taken the fight outside the “natural battlefield” of Israel and Lebanon.

“You have crossed the borders,” he said. “With this murder, its timing, location and method — Zionists, if you want this kind of open war, let the whole world listen: Let this war be open.”

Oh please, let it be open. Please please please. Duck season? Wabbit season? Hezbollah season!!

image

Funny, I thought a plastic bag would have been big enough to carry his remains

Thousands gathered in a hall in the Roueiss neighborhood of Beirut where Mughniyeh’s coffin lay draped in a Hezbollah flag. A band played Lebanon’s national anthem and the guerrilla group’s anthem. Outside in the rain, tens of thousands more stood in silence.

Nasrallah — himself in hiding because of fears of assassination since the 2006 summer war with Israel — warned Israel that its alleged killing of Mughniyeh was a “very big folly” which will be avenged.

“Mughniyeh’s blood will lead to the elimination of Israel. These words are not an emotional reaction,” he said, drawing roars from the crowd which raised fists into the air.

Nasrallah said the killing of Mughniyeh did not weaken his organization, but rather provided an incentive for “tens of thousands” of guerrillas who stood ready to fight Israel.

After speaking, scared little mouse Nasrallah ran quickly back to his hidey hole.

Unlike many Middle Eastern leaders whose speeches are riddled with idle rhetorical threats, Nasrallah is known for delivering on his promises, and Israel takes his threats seriously.

In 2006, he promised to take action to free Lebanese prisoners in Israel, and in July that year, Hezbollah guerrillas staged a daring cross-border raid that snatched two Israeli soldiers as bargaining chips.

The incident triggered a 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah. Early in the fighting, Nasrallah said he would have “surprises” for Israel. Days later, his fighters hit an Israeli warship off the Lebanese Mediterranean coast with Chinese-made shore-to-sea C-802 missile, the first time the group had used the weapon. The war devastated south Lebanon, but Israel and Hezbollah have not negotiated a prisoner swap.

In Washington State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said threats such as Nasrallah’s are alarming.

Well if things heat up, maybe this time somebody will apply some duct tape to Condi and let the IDF finish the job for once

Hezbollah fighters carry the coffin of Hezbollah top commander Imad Mughniyeh during his funeral procession

Warmonger Drew458 says this was a wasted opportunity to field test the latest daisy cutter designs

The funeral hall in the Roueiss neighborhood of south Beirut was packed with mourners in front of Mughniyeh’s coffin, draped in a Hezbollah flag. Two giant posters of the bearded, burly Mughniyeh in a cap and military fatigues were hung behind the coffin with a banner reading, “The Great Commander Martyr — Hajj Imad Mughniyeh.” Some mourners cried as a band played Lebanon’s national anthem and the guerrilla group’s anthem. Outside in the rain, tens of thousands massed.

Nasrallah warned Israel that its alleged killing of Mughniyeh was a “very big folly” which will be avenged.

“Mughniyeh’s blood will lead to the elimination of Israel. These words are not an emotional reaction,” he said.

Oooh, such scawey words! I’m sure the Israelis are just wetting themselves in fear.

Once more, with feeling!

Navy to shoot down ailing satellite

I don’t know if it’s part of the SDI system or not, but the US Navy is going to try to shoot down that ailing spy satellite that’s been in the news. They’re going to launch a missile at the thing from a cruiser. This will discussed today at a Pentagon briefing at 2:30 EST. Live streaming media from Fox News affiliate http://www.kpho.com . I don’t know when the shoot is going to happen, but the satellite’s orbit is decaying rapidly, so they only have a window of opportunity that’s a week or two wide.

U.S. officials said the Pentagon is planning to shoot down a broken spy satellite expected to hit the Earth in early March.

The Associated Press has learned that the option preferred by the Bush administration will be to fire a missile from a U.S. Navy cruiser and shoot down the satellite before it enters Earth’s atmosphere.

The satellite is outfitted with thrusters, small engines used to position it in space, that contain the toxic rocket fuel hydrazine. Hydrazine can cause harm to anyone who contacts it.
The satellite, known by its military designation USA-193, was launched in December 2006. It lost power and its central computer failed almost immediately afterward, leaving it uncontrollable. It carried a sophisticated and secret imaging sensor.

U.S. officials do not want this equipment to fall into the wrong hands.

What goes up

WILL come down
whenever we want it to. And don’t you forget it.

So we will see the US Navy

Any way you look at it, this is excellent publicity for the Navy and the Bush administration. Assuming, of course, that it works. Keep your fingers crossed.

PS - the destroyer in the picture is the USS John S. McCain, DDG 56. The ship was named after Admirals John S. McCain and John S. McCain Jr., the grandfather and father of Navy veteran and Arizona Senator John S. McCain III, whom you may have heard of. I have no idea if this is the ship that will be used, but I doubt it.

Another winner from Arkansas

Arkansas Day Care Teacher Charged With Raping Girl, 4

An Arkansas day care teacher is charged with raping a 4-year-old girl during nap time. Police say the incident was caught on closed-circuit video, 4029tv.com reports.

Cesar Monarrez, 18, was a part-time employee at the Royal Children’s Academy and had worked there for about three or four months. According to an arrest warrant, the alleged victim told authorities on Feb. 5 how Monarrez had touched her inappropriately.

The girl told police her privates were burning because “Bubba” touched her with a knife inside his pocket, 4029tv.com reports. Police identified Bubba as Monarrez, and investigators said video shows him pushing his hands beneath the girl’s waistband while she was asleep.

Royal Children’s Academy Director Howard Davis plans to send a letter to parents.

“What I would say to parents is that the owner of this company and myself have an utmost concern about their safety,” Davis told 4029tv.com. “There wasn’t anything that we saw or heard from any of our employees that would let us think for a second that there was something going on.”

Yeah, but you didn’t bother to watch the video tape until a little girl complained. You’re all fired, and the center’s license is revoked forever.

Davis said he chose not to notify parents of other day care students after the allegations surfaced because he did not know what to tell them for sure. Now that Monarrez has been charged with rape, Davis said, he plans to send out a letter.

Gee, that’ll help. Cover up, much? How about “Dear Parents: At least one of our employees is a rapist. Get your children out of this dump as fast as you can.”

Authorities said the allegations came out on Feb. 5, and the worker has not been allowed back since.

because somehow he was in the car right next to Imad Mughniyeh? No? Then these “authorities” are a bunch of useless twits. OF COURSE he hasn’t been back. His ass is in jail!!

First off, let me be a racist sexist xenophobic pig: You let a teenage boy work at a daycare center? Are you nucking futz? Equal rights, yadda yadda, equal opportunity, yadda yadda, but some things are best done by women. Mothers. Any men working at a daycare place had better be grandfathers. And “Cesar Monarrez”? What’s he, the Child Whisperer? Before Michelle Malkin jumps on this story, how much you want to bet me that this slimeball is an illegal alien? Pony up, cuz the odds are in my favor 100 to 1.

Next, why is this story in the news? Why isn’t the headline “50 Arkansas fathers tear child rapist apart with their teeth”? Is there a sign that says “Welcome to Arkansas, please leave your gonads at the border?” Y’all are Redneck Hillbillies dang it. Now act like it!

It’s a damn shame we don’t have drumhead tribunals for some crimes in this country. They caught the guy on tape being a perv. Hang him. Yeah, hang him. There is no doubt in my mind that this should be a capital offense. Screw Meghan’s law. You wouldn’t need that bit of cruel and unusual punishment if you executed the filthy bastards. And if you did that often enough, maybe every child in the country wouldn’t live in constant fear.

“Your honor, my client would like to request a change of venue.”

“Granted. We’ll take the trial outside. That way it’s closer to the hangin tree.”

Senior Hezbollah terrorist killed

image

Party time!!

Get this ... he done got blowed up by a car bomb! Mwaaahahahahaha! Oh, the delicious irony. Schadenfreude - it’s one of my favorite dishes, hot or cold!

DAMASCUS, Syria - Imad Mughniyeh, the suspected mastermind of dramatic attacks on the U.S. Embassy and U.S. Marine barracks that killed hundreds of Americans in Lebanon in the 1980s, has died in a car bombing in Syria.

The only thing that could improve this would be learning that the bomb used really slow explosives. Make the good moments last longer.

A Hezbollah commander suspected in some of the deadliest terrorist attacks of the last 25 years and a reputed role model for Osama bin Laden has been killed in Syria, Hezbollah TV said Wednesday.

Imad Mughniyeh died in an explosion in a residential section of the Syrian capital, Damascus, said Hezbollah’s television station, Al-Manar.

Uh oh, you know what’s coming ... countdown ... 3 ... 2 ... 1 :

Hezbollah blamed Israel for the killing, but Israeli officials denied involvement.

Blame? Heck, I think we should send them a dozen free pizzas even if it’s just a rumor that they were involved! Time to break out the Snoopy Dance!

imageimageimageimage

“The ongoing investigation over the car bomb in the residential Kfar Sousse neighborhood last night has proven that it targeted Lebanese combatant Imad Mughniyeh,” SANA quoted Syrian Interior Minister Brig. Gen. Bassam Abdul-Majid as saying.

Mughniyeh, 45, had been in hiding for years. He was one of the fugitives indicted in the United States for planning and participating in the 1985 hijacking of a TWA airliner in which a U.S. Navy diver was killed. He is on an FBI most wanted list with a $5 million bounty on his head for that indictment.

Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide ... and look how much money Uncle Sam saves this way.

“With all pride, we declare a great jihadist leader of the Islamic resistance in Lebanon joining the martyrs,” said a statement carried on Hezbollah television. “The brother commander hajj Imad Mughinyeh became a martyr at the hands of the Zionist Israelis.” Iran also blamed Israel.

Israel denied involvement and said it was looking into the death.

They’re probably looking into seeing how many more car bombs they can sneak into that cesspool of a country.

Western intelligence agencies long suspected Mughniyeh in the 1983 bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, that killed 63 people. He also was suspected in the truck bombing that year of the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, an attack that killed 241 people and preceded the U.S. military withdrawal from Lebanon.

Which means it’s an embarrassment to Bush that it wasn’t the US who planted the bomb. Well, this is what allies are for after all. Thank you Israel. For all of them, and all the others, thank you.

Israel had come close to finding Mughniyeh before and killing him, said Yossi Melman, an intelligence reporter for the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. In 1992, intelligence agents tracked him and his brother to a Beirut garage.

“They shadowed his brother and planted the bomb in the garage, knowing that Imad Mughniyeh would arrive there, but he was late and the bomb exploded and the brother was killed. Probably they missed him by a few minutes,” Melman said.

A former head of Israel’s intelligence agency said Mughniyeh’s unseen hand apparently struck the first blow in the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah, a militant group based in Lebanon that seeks to establish a fundamentalist Muslim state.

Former Mossad chief Danny Yaton said Mughniyeh appeared to be responsible for the attack that killed eight Israeli soldiers and the abduction of two others, triggering Israel Defense Forces operations in Lebanon.

U.S. authorities tried to seize Mughniyeh on at least two occasions—in France in 1986 and in Saudi Arabia in 1995, CNN reported.

Former CIA officer Robert Baer said Mughniyeh was “head and shoulders above any other terrorist in the world.”

And now ... he’s just head and shoulders. Burn in ever lasting hellfire you sick bastard.

Primary Fun

Caught the political news early this morning ...

Neither Obama or Hillary can win their primary without going to the Superdelegates if either one of them continues to win by “50% margins”. Which is a 60-40 split on all the remaining states. Of course, Obama is winning states lately by those margins or better.

Huckabee can’t win the nomination, period. There simply aren’t enough delegates left, even if he got all of them. So why is he still here?

I was up well before the dawn of crack today. Damned NJ had a whole two inches or less of snow last night which has now turned to torrential rain. But since this is only the second time it has snowed here the entire winter, the road crews were out trying their damnest to rack up some overtime. Most of the state was brought to a halt last night by a half inch of fine snow which turned every road into a skating rink. We took a few spins down the main street in Hampton (I think its the only street actually) but managed to miss everything.

We live in a condo park that employs half of Nicaragua, so there were 3 guys with shovels outside my unit at 4am, 2 of those little Bobcat skidloaders going BEEP BEEP BEEP, a salt truck and a giant unmuffled diesel pickup truck with a plow. Needless to say it wasn’t exactly a quiet operation.

another failed plot

Denmark: 3 Arrests in Cartoonist Plot

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) - Danish authorities on Tuesday arrested three people suspected of plotting a cartoonist’s assassination for his depiction of the Prophet Muhammad wearing a bomb-shaped turban that enraged Muslims two years ago.

Investigators said they foiled the plot in its early stages in a pre-dawn raid in the western Denmark city of Aarhus. The police intelligence agency, PET, said two Tunisians and a Danish citizen of Moroccan origin were arrested.

“The case shows that, unfortunately, there are in Denmark groups of extremists that do not accept and respect the basic principles on which the Danish democracy has been built,” Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen said.

Tuesday’s arrests were meant “to prevent a terror-related assassination of one of the cartoonists behind the cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad,” PET chief Jakob Scharf said. Investigators believe the plot had not advanced far enough to try the suspects.

Scharf said the 40-year-old Danish suspect faced a preliminary charge of violating a Danish terror law, but will likely be released after questioning. The two Tunisians will be expelled from Denmark, he said.

He did not name the intended target, but Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten said it was the paper’s cartoonist, Kurt Westergaard.

Ok, expell them from Denmark. Right about from the end of the pier. Nobody says you have to give them a ride to anywhere. Make them swim home.

“This is a story that won’t die. It’s disgusting that people are exposed to death threats simply because they are doing their jobs,” said Fred Jacobsen, vice president of the Danish Journalists Union.

He said the union had urged the cartoonists to “keep a low profile” after Tuesday’s arrests.

The cartoonist and his wife, Gitte, 66, have been living under police protection for more than three months because of “concrete murder plans” against him, Jyllands-Posten reported.

Westergaard told Denmark’s TV2 News network that the couple had been forced to move between several locations, both in Denmark and abroad. He praised the intelligence service for their protection.

sounds good to me

Let’s make our own Kassam rockets

story at The Jerusalem Post

A new Facebook group is urging Sderot residents to use the Internet to learn how to build crude rockets, much like the Kassams launched at them from the Gaza Strip, and fire them back at the Palestinians.

Defense Minister Barak is heckled in battered Sderot

The group, which currently has 45 members, posts material from the Internet on how to manufacture rockets.

Facebook, a social networking site that has taken the on-line world by storm, allows anyone to create groups and to invite people to join.

The group’s creators, Shai and Batya Messenberg from Petah Tikva, posted a description that reads: “It cannot be so difficult: If those retards from the Gaza Strip can do it then so can you.”

image

The Hebrew writing reads “This could be you”

The description encourages residents of the town to trawl the Net for information on how to build ballistic missiles from materials found in the home.

“I’m sure that very soon they [the Gazans] will get the message,” the group’s creator wrote.

The message goes on to say that Sderot residents can also do their part in cutting off the flow of Israeli electricity to the Gaza Strip, “even if the High Court of Justice won’t allow it,” by finding someone with a tractor who is willing to drive into nearby electrical poles.

I love it. The people are rising up. If their own government won’t fight back against the constant rocket barrage they suffer daily, then they’ll do it themselves. It’s about time.

I’m not a missile expert, but I did compete in NAR model rocket events as a kid. These little Kassam rockets are deadly but pretty ineffective in both rocketry and military terms. Most of them carry a warhead that weighs barely 15 pounds, and have at best a 6 mile range. That’s pathetic. But they are effective terror weapons because you can see and hear them coming. Plus they are unguided, so they can hit anywhere, randomly.

On the other hand, a far more effective anti-Kassam counter rocket campaign could be waged with a small amount of government help. Maybe If the government were to build a couple little factories (one makes rocket motors, one makes mortar rounds, one makes tubes with fins) and just leave the back doors open at night ...

image

There. That took me longer to try and draw than it did to design. All it is, is a simple aluminum tube that houses a booster rocket motor and a standard M933 120mm mortar shell and an inertial ignition device. Build them on the cheap by the thousands. They’ll outrange and outblast the Kassams but good.

The Kassam rockets have two major drawbacks - they don’t use military grade warheads and they are single stage rockets. Single stage rockets carry a lot of dead weight around with them, so they are range limited. On its own the M933 has a range of 4 1/2 miles. Use the booster stage to double the velocity and you’ll get more than double the range. And the whole damn Gaza Strip is only 20 miles long.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
