Always wondered how they do that - get one object in color and the rest in nearly black and white. Mask and wash?

The whole photo essay, NSFW, is here, proving that I chose a good title for this post.

weekend women around the world

CELEBRATING YOUTH AND BEAUTY AND THE FEMALE FORM AROUND THE WORLD. How damn sad it refuses to last in spite of all demands to do so.  Mom Nature won’t be fooled.

One Brit journalist has described this gorgeous American beauty as, A Black Goddess.  I believe I agree from what little I’ve seen.

A thousand years ago when I was really very young, I very much yearned to be a Japanese male coz of course, they had all the Japanese women.  I wanted one also. I’ve just always been attracted to those ladies.  As years went by not a lot changed except for the fact that I wanted to be many other nationalities too. And for the sames reasons.  My first wife who I did love dearly once got a bit frustrated with me for some comment I made with regard to Japanese women. I don’t even recall what I said about them, I just recall her being upset and asking me, “If You Love Japanese Women That much, Why Didn’t You Marry One Of Them?” Without giving it any thought my immediate reply at the time was one I will never forget.  I don’t think she would either. I said,
“Because I couldn’t find one that would have me.” I only meant it as a joke.  I wasn’t looking for a Japanese girlfriend for gosh sake.  Well, not then I wasn’t.
I think that marriage might have been doomed from that point on.

Silvio Berlusconi shortlists dental hygienist as political candidate. (score one for eye candy)

I thought I’d start the day, late as it is, with humor.  True, it isn’t so funny to many but hey.  Not so poor Silvio is keeping up the tradition of Italian stallions, or at least the perception, and someone has to do it ya know. It can’t be easy.  Plus, he provide the press with copy and usually that’s pretty funny.

Last week Mr Berlusconi caused another furore after joking that while Italy had succeeded in staunching the flow of Albanian illegal immigrants crossing the Adriatic, he would be prepared to make an exception for “beautiful girls”.

His ex wife sees no humor in his carrying on but hell.  She’s no innocent either. After all, he was married when she was seeing him. He finally left the wife for her and so his fidelity or lack thereof should have been no surprise.  And anyway, he’s Italian.  He has a stallion license.

Not all Silvio’s lassies are stunners however. So he’s an equal opportunity letch.

Silvio Berlusconi has shortlisted his dental hygienist to contest crucial elections next month, despite the furore caused by his attempts to promote showgirls as candidates last year.

By Nick Squires in Rome
Telegraph

The Italian prime minister has spent weeks denying reports that his party would stack its list of candidates with attractive young models or actresses.
But the 73-year-old premier was apparently unable to resist the charms of Nicole Minetti, a showgirl turned dental hygienist who he met when his teeth were being repaired after he was attacked by a man with a history of mental illness in Milan in December.

image

Despite the furore and the wrath of his wife caused by his attempts last year to promote a string of glamorous women as candidates for the European elections, Miss Minetti is reportedly now on a short list to run as a candidate for Mr Berlusconi’s People of Freedom (PDL) party in Lombardy, northern Italy.

A former dancer who has appeared on various TV variety shows, she graduated as a dental hygienist last November and within weeks was tending to the prime minister when he was treated in Milan’s San Raffaele Hospital for two broken teeth and a smashed nose following the assault on Dec 13.
Hers will not be the only pretty face in the ranks of Mr Berlusconi’s party as it seeks to consolidate its hold on power in the elections in 13 of Italy’s 20 regions at the end of March.
Graziana Capone, a law graduate and model who has been dubbed “the Angelina Jolie of Puglia,” the southern region from which she hails, was recently hired to help mould Mr Berlusconi’s image on television, La Repubblica reported. She had also been touted as a possible candidate in the elections.

A smiling Mr Berlusconi was photographed this week as he presented four women who hope to be elected as regional governors, two of whom have cover girl looks: Monica Faenzi and Anna Maria Bernini.
His penchant for favouring brains over beauty earned him exasperated criticism from the main opposition party.

“Berlusconi chooses candidates more for their good looks than for their experience,” said Anna Finocchiaro, the Senate leader of the Democratic Party. “He’s filled parliament with beautiful girls, albeit competent, but they don’t count for anything within the party.”

But loyalists within the ranks of his party angrily hit back. Margherita Boniver, an MP, told Corriere della Sera: “I’m astonished. You only have to look at the CVs of our candidates to understand that they are people who are dedicated to politics,” said Barbara Saltamartini, an MP who has responsibility for equal opportunities within the PDL, said that Miss Finocchiaro’s remarks had shown “that she is an enemy of women”.

The glamorous line-up invited comparisons with the row which broke out last year when Mr Berlusconi’s party proposed fielding a bevy of actresses, models and reality television starlets as candidates for the European parliament elections in June.

His wife, Veronica Lario, branded the plan “shamelessly tacky” and a week later demanded a divorce after nearly 30 years of marriage.
In the end most of the women were ditched from the line-up and only one, Barbara Matera, 27, a television presenter, actress and former Miss Italy contender, was elected to Brussels.

She revealed that her role model was Mara Carfagna, the former men’s magazine model who Mr Berlusconi made his equal opportunities minister when he returned to power in 2008.

who’d have thought the name Nicholson and ‘eye candy’ might be a match?

Ok so it isn’t weekend women but it’s kinda hard to resist.  Even if she wasn’t the daughter of this guy. But since she is and since I can’t wait for the weekend, take a look.  I sure do hope she has the talent to go with the looks, because often times being the kin of a famous parent can work against one.

Jack Nicholson’s daughter gets big acting break as friend of teenage surfer who lost her arm in shark attack

By Daily Mail Reporter

Jack Nicholson’s daughter is following in his footsteps with a big screen appearance in a biopic about surfer Bethany Hamilton, who lost her arm in a shark attack.

Budding actress Lorraine, 19, was spotted filming scenes in a bikini in Hawaii yesterday as shooting began for the new film, titled Soul Surfer.

She plays best friend Alana Blanchard, who was with Hamilton on the day a 14ft tiger shark ripped her left arm off at her local beach in Kauai.

A snapshot to help take your minds off my problems.  What? Me Worry?

I am only posting this photo of Lady Kitty Spencer, niece of the late Lady Di, to help take your evil minds off my post and it’s problems.  Also because I saw her photo today and walked into a door while looking at the paper I had in my hand at the time.  Also cos I miss my yoot. Bah.
I liked her photo better in blk & wht and so changed it.  FOR THOSE WHO PREFER A LARGER COLOR PIX GO HERE

A TERRIBLE TALE OF WOE

On Dec.24 I had an Endoscopy where they found nothing in the tummy which is good, but they spotted something they referred to as a “node” in another area.  So they said I needed to see another specialist, an ENT surgeon.  They would make the appointment for me and I will be notified.  STILL WAITING to hear something and so that’s frustrating. Which brings me to this.

Had to see the doc last week as I think the aspirin even tho coated is upsetting stomach. I never had an aspirin problem before but the problem could be the damn cough which is on and off again.  Now that cough has been with me for two years at least.  It isn’t continous as in all day, but it’s pretty bad enough when it happens. And it’s painful with regard to chest and stomach. But the doctors have been stumped all this this time trying to figure it all out. X-Ray after X-Ray and nothing.  Gee, I may take up smoking again. After all, if it took 38 years to catch up to me the first time and I got well, at my age since I don’t have another 38 years I’m damn sorry to say, what’s ta worry about?.  Oh what the hell, at almost $10.00 a pack I doubt I’d start again anyway. Are you smokers back home paying almost 10 bucks a pack now?  I saw some Lucky Strikes at £5.67 a pack the other day, and that’s close to ten American I think. Well nine anyway.

Meanwhile, my doctor ( remember him?) had finally given in and allowed me the Codeine based medication that stops but doesn’t cure said cough.  After all this time one doc reading the report re. the “node” thinks that could be the cause of the cough because of where it’s located .  So nobody thought to suggest an ENT surgeon even a year ago.  The first person to suggest to me that I should mention ENT to my doctor, was a nurse.  Do nurses know more then the docs?  I’m beginning to believe that they do.

So back to aspirin.  Doc takes me off that and give me something called Persantin which I’m supposed to take 2wice a day.  One side effect of that is headache.  IN SPADES!  It’s supposed to go away after awhile, but nobody has told me how long “awhile” is, and added to that, the construction next door has now moved on to the stone cutters.  Like serious stuff guys.
Listening to hour after hour of brick and tile and cinder block being sawed, and hammers on pipes in between and even WORSE if you can imagine it. Worse? What could be worse?

Well, one of the guys and not a youngster either, tries to sing along with the radio they have outside. Actually, he shouts it more then sings it.  As a person (me) who has worked in recording studios and worked with talented ppl, I can tell you this fellow can not sing. He couldn’t hold a tune if you gave him a bag to put it in. So between that and the damn buzz saw, (is that a buzz saw?) and this damn headache that wants me to remove my head, I am a very frustrated person today.
But having read the papers, I am also a very lucky one. Very lucky indeed.

It is sunny but freezing outside.  I think I’ll go for a short walk.

Stay Tuned.

WEEKEND WOMAN……. SOPHIE DAHL

Her name is SOPHIE DAHL, she comes from a very theatrical family whose names would be familiar to Brits.
However, also related is an American name from the past, actress Patricia Neal.

Her late granddad is the creator of Willy Wonka and the author or countless children’s books. He was an illustrator as well and didn’t pass away a poor man.  Quite a talented poet and I’m not much on that stuff, but he is a hoot with something called revolting poems based on fairytales.  The man had a sense of humor.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7de5nV1aQoU It’s Little Red Riding Hood, but not as you’ve ever heard it.
For those who may be interested:  LOTS OF DAHL INFO HERE

It’s been awhile since I posted the really older photos and I plan on getting back to that when I can.  Been pressed for time here lately.

Here’s some background on this lady.  I can’t please every single person I know, so I just have to post the heartthrobs I like and hope you do too.

(Born Sophie Holloway, 15 September 1977 in London) is an English author and model. She is the daughter of actor Julian Holloway and writer Tessa Dahl. Her maternal grandparents were author Roald Dahl and actress Patricia Neal. Her paternal grandfather was actor Stanley Holloway.

Oh Great

Ladies’ Choice?

I put up a little post on Massachusetts Senate candidate Scott Brown (R) the other day. Just being a tad snarky I mentioned that he also has good hair.

What I didn’t know then was that ... that remark seems to apply everywhere! (link is 100% SFW)

So, is this going to hurt his chances, or make him seem a bit less stuffy than the stereotypical Republican? Will it help his popularity? This is the 21st century after all. Sure, sure, content and character. But didn’t we see him in one of those Axe Body Wash ads last year?

Original article has larger picture. The gossip pages haven’t cottoned to this one yet. I dug through the top 4 sites, and while I learned that Donald Goerke, the guy who invented Spaghetti-O’s has died at 83, and that J. Love Hewitt went on TV to tell the world that she Bedazzles her ‘jayjay, not a word on this bit of “breaking news” at those places. Media bias - it’s everywhere!!

WEEKEND WOMEN

OK, once again Drew led me someplace nice and I managed to lose the link.  He did something with Russian women this week past and I thought I’d use one from the site. Now I can’t recall which site I used (I had another as well) for one of them.  But no matter.  I think the important thing is that they are pretty and nice to look at.  And we really should look while we can because those looks won’t last and neither will we.

So ... first, off to Russia.  I love the eyes and the look but didn’t get her name.  So I call her Russian Eyes.

VIVE LA CATHERINE!

CATHERINE DENEUVE

image image

Always LOVED Catherine Deneuve and not just her looks.  Just something about her.

BUT ...  Many years before there was Catherine, there was another French beauty I first saw in a James Cagney movie called “What Price Glory.” 1952.

It wasn’t that I hadn’t discovered girls yet.  But no movie star of the day or girl friend of the moment could compete with this charmer.  I never ever forgot her either.  An interesting side note about this actress btw.

Born 1925 in Paris. Her mother was one of the scientists who contributed to the invention of Pyrex, a glassware that enabled food to be cooked directly in the glass in an oven.  She decided to become an actress while studying law at the Sorbonne.  The Sorbonne ppl. In an age before dumbing down. So this lady had to have smarts along with talent which only enhances her looks for me.  Next to my first grade teacher, my next real crush.

Picture Perfect

A couple bits of photographic excellence for a cold winter’s day. You do have hours to spare and nothing to do, right?

Very few of these pictures give any camera/lens information, but most of them look like real film through superb quality lenses to me. Are there digital cameras this good? I don’t know, but if so, they cost a fortune.

Enjoy.

image

A decent collection of Russian train pictures is located here. Trains have always fascinated and impressed me. It’s technology that you can understand just by looking at it, and the scale is massive. This is just one page from the englishrussia.com website; like Russia itself, this one is huge.

image

Pixdaus gives us an extraordinary portrait gallery. It’s 122 pages long. Sure, there are pictures of cute puppies, adorable kids, and those B&W pictures of raisin-y east european grannies, but most of it is beautiful pictures of beautiful women. Some of them are professionally beautiful, models and actresses and so forth, but most are just regular folks. Quality photography throughout. Pixdaus is another huge website, with more than 10,500 pages. It’s a digital library!

Last posting for tonight and want to end with something nice on this first day of 2010. So ….

I received a very interesting link to a Canadian article, sent to me by Rich K here at BMEWS. Interesting piece about our (USA) economy. Well written too.
BUT ... since I have to leave for the night I thought I’d keeps things upbeat.  But tomorrow’s another day and gloves are off.
A wish for a good New Year to all of us, but more importantly, a HEALTHY one.  Need that to enjoy the year.
Cheers ..

It isn’t time for Weekend Women this being Friday. But I happen to see this Welsh beauty. Jeez I thought. Another blond Welsh singer.
Of course, I’d never heard of her much less her vocal ability.  Doesn’t matter anyway since musically I’m in another generation. Besides, since this is all about looks right here right now, well.  Nothing else to say.

Her name is CHARLOTTE CHURCH
image
She sang the soaring soprano vocals on the A Beautiful Mind (2001) soundtrack.

Hard Crack

Impress your friends and relatives this season with home made candy. It’s easier than you think. I just made this batch of peanut brittle in a little more than half an hour, including clean up.

image

It tastes almost as good as See’s Candies product, which goes for $10/lb plus tax and shipping. Mine cost less than a third as much to make. This recipe will properly fill an American sized baking sheet (11” x 17"). So here you go:

2 cups sugar
1 cups light corn syrup
1/2 cup water
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons butter - 1/2 of a stick - softened but still in it’s wrapper (ie get the butter out an hour ahead of time and leave it on the counter)
2 slightly rounded teaspoons of baking soda
extra butter
2 cups of salted peanuts. Cocktail peanuts are fine. If using plain peanuts, use a bit more salt. Dry Roast peanuts are Ok too. Buy the party size can of peanuts at Walmart for $4.

1 11” x 17” no-stick cookie sheet of average weight. Not the ultra heavyweight kind.
1 8 quart saucepan - the “pasta for two” pot
1 12 quart saucepan mostly filled with water
Teakettle with boiling water in it
1 medium heat resistant mixing spoon. Wood works fine, or use one of those silicon ones. Just make sure it can handle 350 °F
2 or 3 cup glass measuring cup
candy thermometer

Set the 12 quart pan of water to heating. Turn on the oven and get it warm ( 175°F ). Generously butter the no stick baking pan and put it in the oven. Turn off the oven.

Half unwrap the butter and slightly squash it down. Sprinkle the baking soda on it evenly.

Measure the sugar and pour it in the 8 quart pan. Add the salt. In the same measuring cup you used for the sugar, measure the corn syrup and pour it in. Now pour 3/4 cup of the boiling water from the kettle into the measuring cup. Mix it around so it dissolves any leftover sticky, then pour it into the 8 quart pan. Start heating the 8 quart pan. Set the heat to a bit less than half, and stir. Keep stirring. When the sugar mixture gets hot enough it will start to bubble, and the sugar might cake up a bit. Stir it vigorously and use the spoon to scrape free any stuck bits. When all the sugar is dissolved and you have a nice clear liquid, turn up the heat. Stop stirring. Get out your candy thermometer and keep an eye on the temp. It will take a good while to hit 225°F, but will take only a couple of minutes to reach 275°F. Stir it a little. Around 300° the sugar will begin to brown. Hey, you’re making caramel here. When the liquid hits 305-310 it will be nicely brown. Take the pot off the heat. Toss in the butter and stir it around. The baking soda will cause the mixture to foam up a bit. Stir it for about a minute until you get a nice creamy looking mix. Stir in the peanuts. You get a mixture about as thick as hot asphalt. Open the oven and pour it all onto the cookie sheet while moving the pot around. Scrape out as much as you can. Try and push the mixture around so it’s even on the pan, but it won’t move much. Return cookie sheet to warm oven.

Put the 8 quart pot back on the stove. See that hardened brown mess in there? And look at the crust on the spoon! How the hell are you ever going to get that clean? Ha. Take the 12 quart pot of water, which should be boiling by now, and pour in enough to mostly fill the smaller pot. Stir it around with the same mixing spoon. The boiling water will soften the hardened caramel and most of it will dissolve. Once you’ve loosened all the chunks, pour out the steamy water and you’ll have a clean pot and a clean mixing spoon. Pour some more boiling water into your glass measuring cup. Stir, dump. Goo? Gone!

Take the cookie sheet out of the oven and let it cool. Give the sheet a little twist and the peanut brittle will come loose and break into nice sized pieces.

You can make endless variations on this recipe. You can use pecans, almonds, mixed nuts, whatever. Make your first batch for yourself, then adjust the recipe. Some people like more nuts, some want less. Some want it saltier, some want it a little foamier - which is where the brittle part comes from - so they add a bit more baking soda. Some even dust the cookie sheet with baking soda as well.

The batch I just made was done with half cocktail peanuts and half dry roast peanuts. I did not add any salt, since the peanuts were already salted. I took the mixture off the burner at 315°F. While my experimental guinea pigs neighbor ladies downstairs raved about it, I think I can do better next time. A bit more butter, and go with the salt. Use straight cocktail peanuts and then press a couple handfuls of dry roasted ones into the mixture once it’s on the cookie sheet. Maybe butter up the rolling pin and roll it down a little. This batch came out finger thick, with a serious Brazilian tan, the exact color of a Kraft Karamel; what I wanted was more of a honey blond. So I’ll take the next batch off the heat just when it hits 300-305°F. And perhaps try just a smidge less baking soda. But either way, there won’t be anything left of this batch by morning.

image

This recipe is so easy that a child could do it. But be careful; the sugar mixture gets much hotter than boiling water, nearly as hot as fry oil. So you can get badly burned. Therefore I recommend that you make sure your kids are past the klutzy age, say around 30, before letting them make this without supervision.

PS - “hard crack” is the candy maker’s term for sugar solutions heated to 300-310°F. Even just a tiny bit hotter than that and caramelizing starts to take place. With peanut brittle you want things to just start to caramelize, and that’s it. I think my cheapo $3 candy thermometer reads a little low too. My mom has had her commercial grade candy thermometer longer than I’ve been alive, and it still works great. Expensive? As if - it’s less than $9.
