The Last Freeman Has Passed Away
Dyson was a mathematical prodigy who started his career on the right foot, publishing a landmark paper during his graduate studies in 1949 that would help advance the theory of quantum electrodynamics. His insights would lead to a better understanding of quantum mechanics and special relativity, a “Rosetta Stone of physics,” according to the IAS
Dyson was critical of the scientific establishment’s devotion to and dependence on mathematical abstractions. This bled into his later criticism of the accuracy of climate modeling, and disagreement with the scientific community’s urgency to pursue climate change efforts because of them.
In his later years, he considered himself an environmentalist “in love with frogs and forests,” but was critical of the focus on climate change over what he defined as more “urgent problems” like overfishing and habitat destruction
And yes, the Dyson Sphere was named for him, even though he didn’t invent it. But he did work out the details and the numbers, and the concept itself showed just how - literally - far out there his mind was. Take a star with a habitable planet. As life evolves on that planet, the intelligent species consumes more and more energy. The ultimate source of their energy is solar, but a planet is just a small thing. So rebuild the planet. Rebuild the whole solar system. Mine the galaxy and invent scrith. (and maybe discover slood along the way) Build a RingWorld, and then grow that into a RingBall. An entire sphere that completely encloses the star, sized equal to the planetary diameter, captures all the energy the star can provide. And gives you about 100 trillion times as much room as a mere planet. And blocks all the radiation from your Sun and your civilization, so it hides you from hostile aliens. That’s thinking big.
And now he’s gone.

Another night at league, another 0-7 loss. That makes it 1 game won in 6 or 7 weeks for us. 1 in 21? Pathetic. Heart breaking. Of course, we were up against the P family last night, who live for bowling. Uncle is out for a few weeks for health issues, so they brought in Junior as a sub. He’s the guy who holds the alley record for the highest series ever thrown there in it’s entire 55 year history; an 899 out of a possible 900. Needless to say, even with a 179 pin handicap, we got slaughtered.
I need to go back to the very beginning and learn it all over again. Hopefully the right way this time. Maybe I still have a dud ball out in the garage I can dig out and use.
~~~~
But I did have a good time talking cooking with my squad. Turns out Mrs. Newbie owns a good stand mixer, a Dutch oven, and a digital scale, and is interested in baking bread. Awesome. So I reverse engineered a bread recipe on the fly for her, showing her baker’s math and all that, and she says she’ll give it a try this weekend and text me the results. In turn, I promised to bring her some sourdough starter next week. If she does make a boule and tells me about it, I might gift her with one of my medium Cambro storage containers. They’re not just commercial grade plastic, they also have gradations on the side. This makes them wonderfully useful for rising dough in. A typical bread recipe says “let the dough rise for 90 minutes until doubled in size”, which is kind of a misstatement. Dough rises depending on how strong the yeast is and what temperature the dough is. So you can’t go by the clock. But if you put the dough in a translucent box with volume marks on it, you can easily see when it has doubled in size, regardless of how long it takes. Cambro containers are an addiction.
~~~~
Reverse engineered bread recipe:
Goal: I want a loaf that bakes up to 20 ounces
20 ounces is 567 grams. Bread loses about 20 percent of weight when you bake it, so the dough has to weigh that much more. 567 + 20% = 567 x 1.2 = 680. The dough should weigh about 680 grams.
Any loaf that uses up to around 600 grams of flour will rise with a standard measure of yeast. That’s 2.5 teaspoons, 1 packet, 1/4 ounce, or 7 grams worth. All the same amount. So 680 - 7 = 673.
You don’t want the dough to be too dry or too wet. While very high hydration doughs take you into that “no knead” territory they are a challenge to work with. So stick with 70% hydration, which makes a good dough to learn with.
Ok, so we’ve got a certain amount of flour, call it X, and a certain amount of water, call it 0.7X. 70%. Bread needs salt. 2.5% makes a nice tasty amount. Salt amount is based on how much flour you use. So the salt amount is 0.025X.
Put it all together and solve for X, then round things out. 673 = (X + 0.7X + 0.025X) = 1.725X. So X = 673/1.725 = 390.1449 == 390
This gives us
390gm flour
273gm water
10gm salt
7gm yeast
========
680gm
For good flavor, texture, and crumb you want a mix of flours. Bread flour, “KABF”, has lots of gluten and protein and gives the loaf body. All purpose flour makes a good crust and a nice crumb. A small amount of whole wheat flour adds depth to the flavor.
A good rule of thumb is to use twice as much bread flour as all purpose flour. Not everyone likes the darker taste of whole wheat flour, so 10% is fine, although you could go to 30% or even 40%. Too much WW and AP will give you weak bread, as they have less gluten.
So let’s break it down. 60% KABF, 30% AP, 10% WW. 390 x 0.6 = 234, 390 x 0.3 = 117, 390 x 0.1 = 39. 234 + 117 + 39 = 390.
234gm KABF
117gm AP
39gm WW
and the entire recipe becomes
234gm bread flour
117gm all purpose flour
39gm whole wheat flour
273gm water
10gm salt
7gm yeast
And that’s reverse calculated baker’s math. Which is completely scalable: if you wanted to make bread for an army, you’d use pounds instead of grams. It’s the same ratios, so you’ll get the same result. But 455 loaves instead of just 1.
Going further, getting into sourdough territory, you can see why it’s best to feed the starter a mix of WW, AP, and KABF flour, and keep the hydration at 100%. That way it won’t severely impact your flour ratios, and it’s easy to figure out how much salt and extra water to use.
100gm starter has 50gm of flour and 50gm of water. For hybrid bread, the more starter you use, the less yeast you add. Straight sourdough bread has no added yeast and takes a whole day to mature. For 10% starter I’d go with half the added yeast. You do want it to rise slower, to propagate the sourdough flavor. For 20% starter I’d go with just a quarter measure. 2gm. Yes, you can make bread just by baking well fed starter. Heck, you can fry the stuff. It’s an acquired taste as a good strong starter is pretty darn tart. That’s why I usually don’t add more than 25%, often just going with 10-15%. It’s enough.

Ain’t No Lye: Pretzel Experiment 2.1, Doing It On The Cheap
updated with the 4th bake
In response to a comment on one of those baking forums I sometimes visit, I made another batch of pretzels and used the washing soda dip method.
Washing soda, also known as soda ash, is merely baked baking soda. Spread some baking soda out on a cookie pan, put it in a 400°F oven for an hour. This transforms baking soda, which is sodium bicarbonate, into sodium carbonate, aka soda ash. The chemical reaction drives off some CO2 and the resulting powder is quite a bit more alkaline. Finding out if it is alkaline enough was the nature of this experiment.
While I was at it, I made the dough on the cheap. Instead of using the expensive King Arthur high gluten flour and the spendy spelt flour, I used plain old Gold Metal unbleached all purpose flour. Instead of using the organic malt syrup and a teaspoon of white sugar, I used a rounded tablespoon of dark brown sugar. I used Sam Adams Boston Lager which is no less expensive than the crisp European Pilsner lagers I prefer, but the Sammy has a full flavor with a good balance between malt and hops; my hope was that it would add some malt taste that the brown sugar substitution couldn’t provide. After mixing the dough, it felt very weak to me, so I added in 2tbl of vital wheat gluten. I was going to use bread flour, but I’m out of KABF. So a bit of extra gluten might make up the difference. Other than that, the dough was made in the exact same way.
And what a difference. For starters, this mix has much less gluten than what I usually make. That made it difficult to roll out the ropes without tearing, so I left them a little thicker, which resulted in small fat pretzels. And my fancy recipe simply tastes much better. But it was the dipping solution that was on trial here.
Washing soda makes a much less alkaline solution than lye. pH is a logarithmic scale; a pH of 9 is 10 times more alkaline than a pH of 8. Lye solutions run between pH 13 and pH 14. Washing soda solution run between pH 11.5 and pH 12; even a weak lye solution is 10x stronger.
I ran 3 bakes. Here are the results.
The first bake used a 0.13M CaC03 (washing soda) solution; 11gm of soda ash in a liter of water. One pretzel dipped for 30 seconds, one dipped for 60 seconds. They baked at my usual time and temperature, 450°F for 11 minutes, but were so unbrowned that I let them go another 2 minutes. So 13 minutes total.
top: 30 second dip. bottom: 60 second dip
The 30 second dip was a breadstick. Only the faintest pretzel flavor. The 60 second dip was better, but still very mild. I’m thinking 60 seconds is the minimum with this weaker alkaline solution. I worry that a really long dip might create some off flavors, so I’ll stop at 90 seconds.
The second bake used a 0.25M solution, 21gm of soda ash in a liter of water. One pretzel dipped for 60 seconds, one pretzel dipped for 90 seconds. They baked at 450°F for 13 minutes, but browned considerably more.
top right: 60 second dip (it broke) bottom right: 90 second dip
These two came out quite crusty; the extra 2 minutes of baking time was not needed. They are starting to taste like pretzels, about what you’d get at WaWa or from a street vendor. The 90 second dip was slightly more pretzel tasting than the 60 second dip one.
The third bake used a 0.38M solution, 32gm of soda ash in a liter of water. They were baked at 450°F for my standard 11 minutes.
top far right: 60 second dip. bottom far right: 90 second dip
They browned up a bit more than the second bake, even though they were in the oven for 2 minutes less. Pretzel flavor is beginning to be acceptable, but I prefer it quite a bit more than this. Very little taste difference between the 60 and 90 second dips.
I was going to do a fourth bake, using a solid half mole (42gm) solution, but I ran out of sea salt. So I’ll leave those 2 in the freezer, and maybe finish this tomorrow. Maybe I’ll just jump a step, and crank the molarity up to 0.75, using 63gm of soda ash. That should also kick off any strange tastes, if they are an aspect of using a washing soda dip. With any luck, I’ll start getting that glossy, deep mahogany color that a lye dip gives, and maybe some of that strong flavor I love.
Conclusion, and my personal bias:
So it can be done, to some extent. The strongest solution generated an acceptable level of pretzel flavor with no odd flavors, and the dough made from common ingredients will meet most people’s expectations. However, lye is vastly superior for both browning and pretzel taste, and my fancy recipe has much better body and taste.
Fourth Bake
Ok, I added all the rest of the washing soda that I’d made, which totaled 75 grams. This is an 0.89M solution, which should have a pH of 12.14. At this point the pH increase starts to flatline; doubling the amount of soda to 150gm only increases the pH by 0.15. Not worth it.
With the standard 11 minute bake at 450°F they came up quite brown, although with a rather matte finish. Yeah, I know, ugly pretzels. I used kosher salt on top.
top: 60 second dip. bottom: 90 second dip.
Taste is what this test is all about ... and we’ve reached a limit. While the pretzel taste was pretty good but not exceptional, both had an off taste I’d call metallic or chalky. In the 60 second dip this was present but fairly mild; in the 90 second dip it was pretty strong. So I’d say that an even shorter dip or a weaker solution would be a better approach. Maybe and average between the last two dips? Let’s see ... 32 + 74 = 107; 107/2 = 53.5. So probably 50gm of washing soda is a good maximum amount, but I’d probably stick with 40gm if I were to use this dip method again.
Just buy the lye.

Scary Stuff
A scientific research report from December 2015 discussing bio research done at UNC. In order to R&D viral remedies, they created something very much like Wu Flu, based on Chinese horseshoe bat virus, although they called it something else: SHC014-MA15.
Construction of chimeric SL-Viruses
Both wild-type and chimeric viruses were derived from either SARS-CoV Urbani or corresponding mouse adapted (MA15) infectious clone as previously described27. Plasmids containing spike sequences for SHC014 were extracted by restriction digest and ligated into the E and F plasmid of the MA15 infectious clone. The clone was designed and purchased from Bio Basic as six contiguous cDNAs using published sequences flanked by unique class II restriction endonuclease sites (BglI). Thereafter, plasmids containing wild-type, chimeric SARS-CoV and SHC014-CoV genome fragments were amplified, excised, ligated, and purified. In vitro transcription reactions were then preformed to synthesize full-length genomic RNA, which was transfected into Vero E6 cells as previously described28. The media from transfected cells were harvested and served as seed stocks for subsequent experiments. Chimeric and full length viruses were confirmed by sequence analysis prior to use in these studies. Synthetic construction of chimeric mutant and full length SHC014-CoV were approved by the University of North Carolina Institutional Biosafety Committee and the Dual Use Research of Concern committee.
Once they built it, they became afraid to work with it because it was so potent.
As such, relative to the Urbani Spike-MA15 CoV, SHC014-MA15 constitutes a gain in pathogenesis (Fig. 1). Based on these findings, review panels may deem similar studies too risky to pursue as increased pathogenicity in mammalian models cannot be excluded. Coupled with restrictions on mouse adapted strains and monoclonal antibodies generated against escape mutants, research into CoV emergence and therapeutic efficacy may be severely limited moving forward. Together, these data and restrictions represent a crossroads of GOF research concerns; the potential to prepare and mitigate future outbreaks must be weighed against the risk of creating more dangerous pathogens. In developing policies moving forward, it is important to consider the value of the data generated by these studies and if they warrant further study or the inherent risks involved.
Their study was published 3 months earlier at Nature.
Evaluation of available SARS-based immune-therapeutic and prophylactic modalities revealed poor efficacy; both monoclonal antibody and vaccine approaches failed to neutralize and protect from infection with CoVs using the novel spike protein. On the basis of these findings, we synthetically re-derived an infectious full-length SHC014 recombinant virus and demonstrate robust viral replication both in vitro and in vivo. Our work suggests a potential risk of SARS-CoV re-emergence from viruses currently circulating in bat populations.
I am not saying AT ALL that this creation was stolen, sold off, let loose, escaped accidentally, or anything negative like that. What I am saying was that “chimeric SL viruses” were created more than 5 years ago in the USA, ostensibly to use for the development of vaccines and treatment therapies, and that the risks were obvious at that time. That sleeping protein spike thing mentioned in the news article I linked to earlier today was known about then. Probably at least 6 years ago, as this study took some time, and the whole thing was kicked off after the SARS outbreak some years before that and the new awareness of these ACE2 receptor sites on the lungs.
The bat virus vector was recognized at least as far back as 2013, when a study was published, again in Nature. The work was done by a team in Wuhan; at least one of them was later part of the group at UNC.
Later, Li and Shi jointly conducted a gain-of-function study published in the Journal of Virology in September 2015 on the MERS virus and a bat virus (strain HKU4) in 2015. Since MERS virus can enter human cells but HKU4 can not, they introduced 2 single mutations in the HKU4 spike protein and found that the new mutant S protein can enable HKU4 to enter human cells. If they mutated 2 sites in MERS spike, the resulting MERS pseudovirus (experimental virus) cannot enter human cells anymore.
Furthermore, Shi’s group joined an international group to generate a chimeric virus with the bat virus SHC014 they harvested in Yunnan. Since they know SHC014 is unlikely to bind to human ACE2, they “synthesized the SHC014 spike in the context of the replication competent, mouse-adapted SARS-CoV backbone”. So, that is a lab-engineered virus with SARS-CoV Mouse adapted backbone (MA15) but with SHC014 spike.
To their surprise, the chimeric virus (SHC014-MA15) can use SHC014 spike to bind to human ACE2 receptor and enter human cells. SHC014-MA15 can also cause disease in mice and cause death as well. Existing vaccines to SARS cannot protect animals from SHC014-MA15 infection. Therefore, these chimeric virus studies can lead to the generation of more pathogenic, more deadly CoV strains in mammalian models.
Due to the U.S. government-mandated pause on the gain-of-function (GOF) studies, this international research did not proceed further at that time. However, there is no evidence that Shi’s group in China stopped any further study on the track of introducing GOF mutations on the CoV.
Anything further is conjecture, quickly leading to rather paranoid conclusions. I have no way to verify researcher Shi Zengli’s remark that “"The novel 2019 coronavirus is nature punishing the human race for keeping uncivilized living habits.” or even what that means to her.
I can only say that the lab coat folks at the Wuhan CDC identified this thing almost instantly, perhaps because they’ve been working on things extremely similar to it for many years now. And the “HIV-like mutation” that is mentioned in today’s news is probably the same one that was pointed out by virologists from India soon after Wu Flu showed up, but has since been retracted for some reason ... because they were wrong, or because of politics. I don’t have that answer. But Shi Zengli was behind that criticism too. Does her research show that this situation occurs naturally as well?
OR maybe I’ve spent 2 hours running down links and reading accredited and peer reviewed research papers published across 12 years that seem to strongly support today’s “fake news” published only to whip up public frenzy.

Aren’t there any happy kitten rescue stories out there?
Everything on the news is either Bernie or WuFlu. Tiresome. So I think I’m going to revert to pretzel blogging ... actually, I’ve got a basic, inexpensive quick version of my super dough I’d like to run off, and test it in a washing soda bath. I have to go buy some beer first.
Washing soda is just baked baking soda. 400 oven for an hour on a baking sheet, and you get back a silvery powder that is far more alkaline than baking soda. A quarter molar solution, 0.25, of 21gm in a liter of water yields a pH of 11.86, which may be strong enough to trigger that pretzel magic reaction without leaving a nasty taste behind. 10gm of the stuff gives 11.7 pH and half the chance of aftertaste. Will they do the job, being 100 times weaker than a lye bath? Time for another Edible Science Experiment !!
Meanwhile, the latest research out of China says that the WuFlu seems to be a mix of the bat coronavirus and HIV. Isn’t that special?? The HIV-like genetic mutation makes it 100-1000 times more infectious as SARS. The invasive vector is something called a “furin-like cleavage site”. [ Insert snide remark about those damn furin-ers and something about cleavage here. Have to stay abreast of the news. ]
This may be why some people who have had it and recovered get sick again, like the lady in Japan in today’s news. Because HIV is forever.
The likelihood that this thing is natural gets smaller every day. Thank God it leaked out before they could mate it to Ebola and Hantavirus and then target it to specific ethnic groups.
There will be no haj this year. Sorry muzzies.
Japan is closing all it’s schools for a month just to be safe.
Australia bans any foreign visitors who have been in China 14 days ago.
Party officials and police stealing donated emergency food in hardest hit cities. Typical corrupt elites.
175 New Yorkers on Long Island remain in voluntary quarantine. So far, no infections. So far.
No more dogs or cats for lunch in China. No snakes, frogs, or turtles either. Oh noes!!!

New Jersey To The Rescue
Asian Airlines are disinfecting their planes with operating room strength multi-quat disinfectants. One of them, D-125, is made right here in West Caldwell NJ by the Microgen company.
Qantas Airways, Korean Air Lines and Singapore Airlines’s carrier Scoot are among airlines that helped evacuate people from the outbreak’s epicentre, the Chinese city of Wuhan, and from a cruise ship off Japan.
They’ve stepped up aircraft-cleaning efforts as a result, trying to ensure that planes used in rescue missions are safe to be put back into commercial use.
The standard vacuum-and-wipe clean-up on board has turned into hospital-grade sterilisations.
Qantas used Viraclean, a hospital-grade disinfectant made by Sydney-based Whiteley Corp. It’s a pink, lemon-scented liquid that kills a range of bacteria and viruses including Hepatitis B and herpes simplex, according to the manufacturer. Surfaces heavily soiled with blood or sweat should be soaked with undiluted Viraclean, Whiteley says.
Korean Air opted for MD-125. That’s a diluted version of D-125, a cleaning solution made by Microgen and used in industries from health care to poultry farming. The company says MD-125 acts against 142 bacteria and viruses, including salmonella, avian flu, HIV and measles.
How are the planes cleaned?Qantas used the same Boeing 747 on its two flights from Wuhan and another from Tokyo back to Australia. It was cleaned for 36 hours. Pillows, blankets, magazines and headphones were all thrown out, the airline said. The cabin was sprayed twice with disinfectant, which covered all the seats, floors, armrests, tray tables, overhead luggage bins and walls. The cabin was then wiped down. The plane’s air filters, which are similar to those used in surgical theatres, were also replaced. The 747 was back on the Sydney-Santiago commercial route this week, according to data from flightaware.com.
Korean Air used one Boeing 747 on two flights from Wuhan, and an Airbus SE A330 for the third. As well as spraying and wiping down the cabin, cleaning teams replaced seat covers and dividing curtains near the galleys and disinfected the luggage hold, the airline said. The planes were only allowed back into service with the approval of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Korea.
I’ve written before about my use of D-128, a dual quat operating room strength disinfectant mainly used in the veterinary trade. It’s amazing stuff. It kills every kind of germ you can think of. Mold, fungus, bacteria, viruses, you name it. Avian flu, staph, strep, black mold, HIV, parvo, measles, H1N1, and many of the other horrible germs out there fall to it’s efficacy.
There are other types of effective
So I think these airlines are doing the right thing. Korean Air may have gone a bit far by replacing all the cloth materials in the cabin, but too far may be barely enough to alleviate public fears. I would like to see this level of sanitation become standard on all airlines, in addition to installing a large bank of germicidal UV lights, electrostatic precipitaters, and ozone generators in the HVAC systems. Sadly, airliners and cruise ships are giant Petri dishes. Airliners perhaps especially, as the cabin air gets recycled endlessly while in flight.
Going forward, even when this is over, you might see everyone on the plane wearing masks, all the time. There are even effective disinfectants that can be sprayed on these masks that don’t have harmful vapors and will kill most viruses for 6 hours of use.
Generally, if you want a disinfectant wipe or spray you can have confidence in, find ones that are rated to kill SARS and MERS. There aren’t many that do both, but there are plenty that do one or the other. NONE OF THEM has yet been proven to kill the Wuhan virus, because it is so new. However, WuFlu seems to be very closely related to these, so it’s a fair bet they should work. But it’s still a bet, not a guarantee.
Here is a pretty darned good site: What Kills It

coronavirus briefing
President Trump has given the job of leading the corona taskforce to Vice President Pence.
This is a great opportunity for him, and for us. We haven’t seen all that much of the VP so far. This will be a very public task for him, regardless of how much of a figurehead he may be here. Under the microscope, under major pressure, in front of the microphones constantly. Can the former Governor of Indiana manage and coordinate, get people to do their best, get everyone to get along, to pull together? Is he a leader, or merely a Tweeter? Can he be a hero, or will he be a zero? I want to see him become an instant expert, not just a delegater. Perfect training for a possible future President.
Go get ‘em Mike.
Meanwhile, President Trump has said that the $2.5 Billion is a starting point; more will be available if necessary.
It looks like making gowns and N95 masks is going to shift into super high gear, while the President hopes they won’t be necessary. There will also be a big “what you can do at home” info blitz. Internationally, the President is going to play it by ear with travel and trade restrictions. I’m not sure that’s the best way, but slamming and locking the door would trash the global economy overnight, which is something he (and everybody else) wants to avoid.
Looks like international tourism is going to take an even bigger hit in the near future.

They Should Never Have Even Been There
2 Illegals, 19 and 20, accused of raping 11 y/o girls they were in school with
Illegal aliens. Grown men. In our high school. Grooming and molesting 11 year old girla.
Illegal immigrant from El Salvador, 20, and 19-year-old man, both enrolled in Maryland high schools, charged with raping 11-year-old girls
Jonathan Coreas-Salamanca, 20, and Ivan Reyes Lopez, 19, were arrested earlier this month on charges of raping two different 11-year-old girls in Maryland
Both were active students in the Montgomery County Public School system
State law says any resident between five and 21 entitled to free public education
ICE says Coreas-Salamanca is an illegal immigrant from El Salvador
Lopez immigrated from Honduras three years ago
Both been charged with second-degree rape and were denied bond
Coreas-Salamanca is accused of repeatedly molesting an 11-year-old girl
Lopez is accusing of raping an 11-year-old girl he met at a park in his home
Two Maryland public high school students, aged 19 and 20, have been arrested for allegedly raping different 11-year-old girls off campus in separate incidents.
Jonathan Coreas-Salamanca, 20, and Ivan Reyes Lopez, 19, have both been charged each with second-degree rape. Coreas-Salamanca faces additional counts of sexual abuse of a minor and third-degree sexual offense.
Coreas-Salamanca, a Salvadorian national living in the US illegally, was arrested at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, where he was enrolled as a student, on February 13.
Six days later cops arrested Lopez at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School, where he is a student. Both students had immigrated to the US and were enrolled in the Montgomery County Public School system.
Montgomery County made headlines last year for their sanctuary city policies, but have since rolled back on them, allowing ICE to cooperate with police under certain circumstances.
...
Coreas-Salamanca was living in Adelphi, Maryland and was in the US illegally, according to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
...
He is accused of giving a 11-year-old girl a cell phone some time last year. Using that phone he exchanged explicit text messages and photographs with the girl and arranged for sexual meetups. The victim’s father discovered the phone on Christmas Eve and found a trove of text messages describing ‘vaginal intercourse, fellatio, and cunnilingus’.
The father reported to police a text message where the suspect advised the victim that ‘she bit his penis the last time she performed fellatio’, according to court documents.
So daddy finds this out December 24 (must have been a great Christmas at their house!!), has the texts proving the guy totally guilty, and the cops don’t arrest him until the middle of February? 51 days later? WTF???
And this school system puts grades 6 through 12 together? How else could he have been in the same school building with an 11 year old child?

Thin Pickings, viral musings
Not a whole lot out there to blog about if I want to avoid the Dem debates and primaries and the whole wu fluthing.
OTOH, these debates are showing that Joe Biden is pretty much senile, as the Gaffe Master drops his dumb bombs day after day. “I’m running for Senator.” “My son the Surgeon General.” “150 million Americans killed by guns since 2007.” There’s a screw loose in there somewhere, and a few spark plugs misfiring. Go back to the retirement home Joe and have some nice soft pudding.
OTTH, now that white people are getting the disease all over Europe, our MSM has really, REALLY ramped up the coronavirus stuff in the last couple days, with help from the WHO and the CDC. It’s going to come here, it’s going to be huge, it will shut down the world for at least a month, and at least a million of us will die from it. Gosh, what great news. Actually, if you run the numbers - 325 million people here, a 70% infection rate, and a 2% mortality rate - that ads up to 4.5 million deaths. And while I do believe our medical care is quite a bit better than what China has, I don’t think we have the ability to deliver massive quantities of that care to the point that we can but the death rate by 80%. Maybe our people are just healthier. Let’s pray that’s so.
Meanwhile, San Francisco, already knee deep in the pooplah, has declared a state of emergency ahead of the wave.
The mayor of San Francisco declared a state of emergency over coronavirus fears on Tuesday shortly after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a warning that the U.S. will likely see more cases.
There are 57 known cases in the U.S. and no cases in San Francisco, but Mayor London Breed pointed to the virus’ unpredictability and troubling global growth.
“We see the virus spreading in new parts of the world every day, and we are taking the necessary steps to protect San Franciscans from harm,” Breed said. She said many of the city’s residents travel to mainland China, so it is not far-fetched to suspect cases in the future.
Is it time yet to close to gates to Fortress America? I would have thought that time was 3 or 5 weeks ago. Close the borders, cancel all air flights, close the ports. Give our citizens a week to get home and quarantine a whole lot of them. Declare a bank and credit card holiday; no foreclosures or loan defaults for the next 90 days. Can we survive 3 months without any imports, using our own food and fuel? Let’s find out. If we do wake up to a lifeboat scenario of limited resources, will there be a push to toss the 65 million illegals overboard?
I’m really hoping that a new economic model comes out the other side of this. People are finally waking up to just how much of everything we buy comes from over there. For more than 40 years every possible kind of production has moved to Asia, taking our jobs with it. Slave labor, poor quality control, and no regulations add up to great profit margins. And we got to clean up our air, land, and water while they turned their nations into toxic waste dumps. And we have way too much stuff anyway. Maybe the era of excessive consumption and our throw away culture are about to come to an end. What if we shift over to building quality, durable good here that are made from our own resources, last a long time and can be repaired locally?
Meanwhile, the Dems continue to push for open boarders. Not the smartest idea right now. Not ever, actually, but worse at this moment in time. And at the same time, they’re dunning Mr. Trump because his $4.5 Billion plan to fund containment efforts isn’t enough.
I think maybe I should go do some grocery shopping, and lay in some extra supplies. Just in case we have to isolate against the zombie hordes.
UPDATE: The President will give a speech tonight about the coronavirus situation. 6pm Eastern.

The Winter That Wasn’t
I can’t believe it. It’s 60° today. It’s nearly the end of February. We had a winter like this back in 1998, where you hardly needed a coat and we only had a few short episodes of snow. Same this year. We’ve had plenty of rain, so there’s no drought. But gosh. Thank you Climate Change!

Stockholm Syndrome In Stockholm
Nobody says the “J word”. Or even the “M word”
Violent Swedish Gangs Are All Lead By Immigrant Muslim Jihadis
A Swedish news outlet has revealed that 17 of 32 gang leaders committing violence in Stockholm were born overseas, with the other 15 born in Sweden but from migration backgrounds.
The 32 men are believed to be leaders of various criminal gangs in the Swedish capital and have been the focus of Stockholm police as part of Operation Rimfrost, a nationwide police operation to tackle the growing violence among gangs in Sweden, according to an Expressen analysis quoted in a Nyheter Idag report.
Of the 15 gang members who were born in Sweden, just one is said to have a Swedish-born parent, while the rest reportedly have parents who migrated to Sweden.
“I’m not naive. There are other crimes where the deportation and migration issues are more relevant, but when it comes to the leadership layers of the worst criminal gangs in Stockholm, it is obviously a failed integration,” Expressen journalist Fredrik Sjöshult wrote.
The report echoes a prior report in the city of Malmo in September of last year that revealed the majority of the shooting suspects in the multicultural southern Swedish city were also from migration backgrounds.
A total of 20 cases were reviewed by Swedish newspaper Sydsvenskan, which found that 14 of the 20 individuals were born to parents who had migrated to Sweden from Africa, the Middle East, or elsewhere.
And then PC and Stockholm Syndrome get in the way of things ...
While some have pointed to a lack of integration, ghettoisation of no-go suburbs, and other immigration factors to explain the rise in gang violence, Prime Minister Stefan Löfven has rejected such claims.
In November, the Swedish leader stated: “The segregation is because there is too low employment and too high unemployment in these areas. But that would have been the same regardless of who had lived there. If you put people born in Sweden under the same conditions, you get the same result.”
Right. Because in 3000 years there have never been poor people in Sweden, or unemployed people in Sweden, or even unpopular people in Sweden, who haven’t turned en masse to violent crime. Riiiight.
And there is no mention that the other people in these gangs are also nearly exclusively of the same background. Oh heck no. Everybody knows that all the grenade tossers, rapists, arsonist, muggers, killers, drug pushers, and thieves are blonde, blue eyed Swedish milk maids. They just happen to be lead, accidentally I’m sure, by despotic psychotic jihadi types who are as naturally Swedish as last week’s sashimi.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.
- Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
- Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
- Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
