I visited this ship in Nyack NY when it was pretty much brand new. I guess I was 9 or 10 at the time.

Good old Pete Seeger, his wife, and his band of merry madmen did a tremendous job in the 60s and 70s raising awareness, community organizing, and spearheading efforts to get the Hudson River cleaned up. Things there are so much better now than when I was a little kid and the Hudson was thought of as an Industrial River, which meant it was a toxic sludge fest. It isn’t pristine yet, and probably never will be, but amazing progress has been made. So good for them. And it is a pretty little ship, built along the lines of the shallow draft river schooners of the 19th century.

See? No reason Conservatives can’t be pro-environment; generally we are. It’s just that sometimes - no, take that back, ALMOST ALWAYS - the greenies go too far. Modernize and protect the nuclear power plants, don’t shut them down. Fracking for gas is a great idea, but make sure the wells are properly sealed and try to use pre-existing deep groundwater if you can. See? Conservative Conservation: “moderation in all things”.

The Minoans were Caucasian: DNA debunks longstanding theory that Europe’s first advanced culture was from Africa

By Damien Gayle

DNA analysis has debunked the longstanding theory that the Minoans, who some 5,000 years ago established Europe’s first advanced Bronze Age culture, were from Africa.

The Minoan civilisation arose on the Mediterranean island of Crete in approximately the 27th century BC and flourished for 12 centuries until the 15th century BC.

But the culture was lost until British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans unearthed its remains on Crete in 1900, where he found vestiges of a civilisation he believed was formed by refugees from northern Egypt.

Modern archaeologists have cast doubt on that version of events, and now DNA tests of Minoan remains suggests they were descended from ancient farmers who settled the islands thousands of years earlier.

These people, it is believed, are from the same stock that came from the East to populate the rest of Europe.

Evans set to work on Crete in 1900 with a team of archaeologists soon after the island was liberated from the yoke of the Ottoman empire, almost immediately unearthing a great palace.

He named the civilisation he discovered after the legendary Greek king Minos and, based on likenesses between Minoan artifacts and those from Egypt and Libya, proposed that its founders migrated into the area from North Africa.

Since then, other archaeologists have suggested that the Minoans may have come from other regions, possibly Turkey, the Balkans, or the Middle East.

But now a joint U.S. and Greek team has made a mitochondrial DNA analysis of Minoan skeletal remains to determine the likely ancestors of the ancient people.

Mitochondria, the energy powerhouses of cells, contain their own DNA, or genetic code, and because mitochondrial DNA is passed down from mothers to their children via the human egg, it contains information about maternal ancestry.

The Welch’s Easy Squeeze bottle cap.

I’m not sure when it hit the market, but here is a new picture I just took. It’s from a jam jar we’ve had around here for several months.

Welch’s has these tops on their plastic squeeze bottles of “Natural” “spread”. Not quite as chunky as preserves, more fruit filled than jam or jelly. You don’t need a knife to dig the stuff out and spread it around. Upend the bottle and give it a gentle squeeze, and the perfect amount of product is dispensed. 3 passes covers a slice of bread, and you’re halfway to making a perfect peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Enough spread for great taste, but not so much that it drips out the sides. And perfectly even distribution. The cap stays pretty clean, not getting loaded up with dried up jam too quickly.

Neat idea. I’m at least partially confident that I’m the first blogger to focus on the cap, although others have favorably reviewed the product before.

So I’m marking my calendar to see how long it takes the UK Mail Online to steal my post.

Just a little tongue in cheek reminder that the Great Professional Media has become a lot like the blogosphere that has become a lot like it. Bloggers borrow from each other left and right, but the nicer ones always link back. It’s not called the Samizdat Network for nothing. But it’s that kind of borrowing that has the Old Media types all uppity. Those copy cat bloggers in pajamas! Yet obviously, they do it too.

For purposes of full disclosure, I am currently fully dressed and sitting at the computer in my own library. I’m not sure if I even own a pair of pajamas any more, and blogging from my mother’s basement would be a cold and damp affair. Plus spiders. Ewwww!!!
