the great digital debate, round XLVIII

The Great Lesser of Two Evils Debate

Should I stay or should I go now?

If I stay there will be trouble;

If I go it will double.

So you’ve got to let me know

Should I cool it or should I blow?

It looks like the entire right wing blogosphere is chewing on this one, and they’re all going over to Rachel Lucas’ place to weigh in.

Mitt to Quit

Mitt Romney is dropping out of the GOP race. Expect the speech at today’s CPAC; should be around 12:50pm Eastern. It is expected that he will endorse McCain .

Damnation.

UPDATE 1:09PM

“It’s not only about me ... in this time of war I feel I need to now stand aside”. Mitt has given up.

But what a Mitt!! Where has this guy been hiding? If you missed his speech go find it on YouTube or wherever. Wow. Laura Ingrahm said she didn’t want to “calm down”, then introduced him as a “Conservative’s Conservative” ... and away he went ...

“I fear America will become the 21st century’s France” ... chastity, not promiscuity ... welfare reform ... marriage amendment ... America is a faith based culture ... europe is a demographic nightmare ... family values ... prosperity and security equal energy technology and that means nukes and gasified coal ... freedom must not be held hostage to Achmedinijad ... cut government spending, entitlements, high taxes ..."take a weed-whacker to entitlements and government unions” ... jihad is the #1 world threat; for them democracy is blasphemy ... Clinton slashed the military and said we’d get a peace dividend; we got the dividend but not the peace” ... raise veteran benefits ... Hillary and Obama will retreat and allow defeat ... “

... and the crowd went wild.

I think he has laid down a challenge for McCain here. If Johnny Boy backs off from these points he knows he’s going to lose the base.

Hmmm ... on the other hand, Mitt didn’t say a single word about building the fence or border security. Crap.

UPDATED UPDATE 2:10PM

Hannity on FoxNews - “usually when a primary candidate gets the final nod he tries to move towards center. McCain is going to have to move to the right to try and keep the base.” Yeah, but will he? And will the base believe him?

Via the Rott - CPAC instructs convention goers to NOT boo McCain. Maverick is scheduled to speak to them at 3pm Eastern. Hmmph, good thing I’m not at CPAC.

UPDATED UPDATED UPDATE 3:50PM - Drew tries his hand at live blogging. I never knew I could type so fast! “C&O” means Clinton & Obama.  McCain’s intro and his talk to CPAC ....

Sen Coburn (R-OK) intro - courage is what matters in Washington. no battle plan survives first contact with the enemy. Anything that sends chills down the spine of Washington should warm the hearts of voters ... McCain was only 1 of 11 to fight the Bridge To Nowhere ... war on pork, no earmarks, new prescription drug entitlement (Medicare part B) McCain voted against it. Most conservative health care plan, will fight H&Os plan. He has taken stances we don’t like - spins it as pork fighting. bork, thomas, roberts, owens .. mcC will support conservative judges. Immigration - he listened and learned and decided Conservs were right. McCain-Fiengold misdiagnosed things, though his desire to corral corruption was correct. Terrorism and malspending Congress are the 2 issues McCain will support ... pro life blah blah. Most qualified for national security. Elections are about choices - happy to debate those who think H or O would be better than McC. Embrace a heritage of sacrifice ... welcome soon to be president Sen. John McCain!

audience - mixed cheers & jeers, some applause, some yelling. Goes on for a couple minutes while McCain stands at the podium.

3:23pm McCain says thank you about 100 times while audience noise continues ... I haven’t been here in a little while *joke cuz he’s dissed em forever* - I was preoccupied trying not to be the GOP frontrunner back then, I’ve got it now and wouldd prefer to hold onto it a little while. I talked with Gov Romney; we agreed to sit down together and agree on the importance to unify the party. Campaign based on Conservative principles. Huckabee is a great and fine man I also know ... I’d be honored and deeply humbled to receive the nomination of my party ... I have a responsibility to unite the party ... I can’t succeed in that endeavor w/o the support of dedicated Conservatives. Many of you disagree strongly with some of my positions. I respect that. I hope you’ll allow that I’ve maintained the record of a conservative. If not (shrugs) thanks for the opp to make my case today. Liberty is a right conferred by our Creator not by governments. The proper object of justice is not to aggregate power to the state but to protect the people. In 1975 Reagan said a party cant be all things to all people. I was still in the USN when Reagan did Shining City on the Hill speech. I am proud to have come to power as a foot soldier .. I have not forgotten my political heritage; I’m as proud of it now as I was then.

My record is mainstream conservative: Small goverment, fiscal discipline, strong defense, good judges, social values, Defense of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as given to the born AND THE UNBORN. These are my beliefs. Take added comfort on the positions I have defended - no farm subsidies, against big gov health care, for tax incentives in Michigan, in FL against the Natural Catastrophic (bill), was against Medicare Part B. I argued to make Bush cuts perm, cut corp tax, abolish AMT that threatens 25 million families. I am pro 2A - against waiting periods, AWB, gun company lawsuits. 24 year pro-life record. Defended W’s long overdue decision to increase troops for the surge. I hold these positions cuz I believe they were in the best interests of my country.

On the issue of illegal immigration (major BOOS from audience, last nearly a minute, turns to cheers) which still provokes outspoken opposition. I was genuine, but I failed to convince Americans of that. I accept that. It is among my highest priorites to secure our borders first (cheers) and only after would we address other aspects of the problem in a way that follows the rule of law. Examine my record - I am not in the habit of making promises I do not intend to keep. If I get the nomination, I will offer Americans a clearly Conservative approach to governing. I will not obscure my positions from those who might not agree with them. I know that you know that elections are fought within margins of small differences. This one will not be. The Dems will govern in the ways of days gone by ... days when we averted our eyes to dangers abroad ... this election will be about big things. I intend to reduce the size of the federal government. I will not sign a bill with earmarks in it. ANY earmarks in it. I will fight for the line item veto, not permit expansion of any entitlement programs that are bankrupting us - au contraire, I will reform them. C&O will raise your taxes. I will cut them - step 1: Bush cuts permanent. Cut Corp tax from 35 to 25%. End AMT. Won’t let dem congress raise your taxes and choke the growht of your economy. Will approach health care with free market solutions. I will appoint judges who have proven trustworthy who enforce the laws, not legislate from the bench like H&O will do. C&O will withdraw forces based on timetable based on political expediency regardless. I intend to win the war and trust in our commanders there.

My friends, we share the grief over the terrible losses we have suffered in the persecution of this war. But pulling out would be worse. I will not allow that to happen. (big cheers and chanting). Those Senators won’t recognize the threat of Iran. I will not permit an Iran that espouses death to Israel and USA. H&O say we are responsible for WoT. I will defeat the threat by staying on offense ... free people against those who despise us. I promise to contest these issues from Conservative stance and keep this country safe prosperous and free.

We’ve had a few disagreements ... I will seek the counsel from my fellow Conservatives. If I’m convinced I’m wrong I’ll change my stance. We share a conception of Liberty that is the bedrock of Conservatives. My love of liberty is the equal of any Americans ... deep and unwavering. At the core of my convictions I am pro-life and an advocate of the rights of man. I promise you - our liberty will not be nibbled away bit by bit. For all my reputation as a maverick, I’ve only found true happiness by serving a greater cause - our country and what makes us great. I will never tire of serving her and I can’t do that without your council and support. Thank you and God bless you.

Global Warming UpdateClimate Change Update!  Damn its cold out!

From The Crysosphere Today here’s a picture of the Arctic ice cap. Remember a few months back when it was all melty and the polar bears were gonna drown? Oops. It’s back to being just as big as it every was.

image

Meanwhile, the sun continues to stay at the bottom of it’s sun spot cycle, running cool and having a low magnetic field output.

image

so that low magnetic flux might be letting more cosmic rays through, helping to create more earth-cooling/sunlight-blocking low altitude clouds

with the final result that this winter is really nasty for lots of places around the globe that don’t usually suffer much winter. Like Israel. And Iraq. And China. And South America. All pionted out to us by Gateway Pundit.

ONE IN FOUR BRIT KIDS DON’T THINK CHURCHILL WAS REAL, BUT SHERLOCK HOMES WAS. HUH?

Must thank Drew for this one.
Originally, my wife brought this to my attention when she fainted at the story. OK, I exaggerate. She didn’t really but she was a bit upset, belonging to a generation who (we assume) is a tad better educated.  But I got busy and caught up in stuff and fogot it, when this arrived from Drew.  This version is better due to photos and graphics then the one we originally saw.
I really hope the story isn’t true.  But I have a thought that it might be.

Challenge Churchill! One in four think Winnie didn’t exist (but Sherlock Holmes did)
By REBECCA CAMBER - More by this author »

Never, in the field of human ignorance, have so many known so little about famous Britons.

A quarter of the population think that Winston Churchill never actually existed, a survey suggests.

While a poll recently named him the greatest Briton of all time, the wartime prime minister is seen by many as a mythical figure along with the likes of Florence Nightingale and Sir Walter Raleigh.

This could well have something to do with the TV insurance adverts inviting viewers to “challenge Churchill” and featuring a lugubrious talking dog.

According to the survey of 3,000 respondents, many believe the inspirational Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi, Cleopatra and the Duke of Wellington are also characters dreamed up for films and books.

Some think Charles Dickens was himself a character in fiction rather than the creator of David Copperfield, Oliver Twist and Martin Chuzzlewit.

In a damning indictment of the nation’s historical knowledge, many of those surveyed said they believe Sherlock Holmes was a real person, along with the pilot Biggles and even the Three Musketeers.

Almost 50 per cent were certain that Eleanor Rigby existed not just in the imagination of John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

Just saying

When I went in to vote in the NJ primary on Tuesday, I noticed an interesting thing. No, I’m not talking about the candidate selection being totally out of date, though it was. The Republican listing was Guiliani, Thompson, McCain, Huckabee, Paul, Romney, and a place for a Write-In, while the Democrat side was Richardson, Biden, Edwards, Clinton, Obama, Kuchinich, and a place for a Write-In. Where we live you have to sign in in a book, then they give you a numbered tag which you sign and then turn over to the lady who stands by the machine. (So much for secret ballots!) No, the part that I really noticed was that the voting machines were set up so that I could chose a candidate from one party or the other, and that the voter rolls do not list my party affiliation. The sign-in ladies do not ever ask to see a voter registration card either. So, in NJ at least, anyone could vote for one candidate from either party. Seriously, I checked it out in the booth. I pushed the Obama button and it lit up ... which gave me a small rush of fear, so I quickly hit the Romney button which lit up and canceled out Obama, and cast my vote.

How many of the state primaries are open this way? How much raiding goes on? This worries me; it seems to defeat the purpose of belonging to a party in the first place. So I took a look at Wikipedia. Yeah, I know they aren’t always fully accurate, but it’s fast. Reading through the definitions, it appears to me that only “closed” primaries actually admit only the members who are registered with that party. Every other kind of primary (or caucus) allows in people who don’t belong. That isn’t right, is it? Why did I bother to sign up with the GOP, just to get the fundraising letters?

According to Wikipedia, these are the only states where only Republicans get to vote for Republican Presidential candidates, and only Democrats get to vote for Democrat candidates:

* Arizona - Closed Presidential Preference Election (2/5). *Won by McCain*
* Connecticut - Closed Primary (2/5). *Won by McCain*
* Kentucky - Closed Primary (5/20).
* Maryland - Closed Primary (2/12).
* New Mexico - Republican Primary (6/3). Democrat closed caucus 2/5/08
* New York - Closed Primary (2/5). *Won by McCain*
* Oklahoma - Closed Primary (2/5). *Won by McCain*
* Oregon - Closed Primary (5/20).
* South Dakota - Closed Primary (6/3).
* Utah - Closed Primary (2/5). *Won by Romney*
* West Virginia -Closed Primary(2/5). *Won by Huckabee*

Ok, I then went back and marked who won what for the states that have run the GOP primaries already ... and McCain comes out a clear winner. I was wondering if “pollution” had something to do with it, but it doesn’t look that way. He’s won 4 of the 6 Republicans Only primaries held so far. Maybe he really does have the support of the party after all?

strange places on the internet

Ok, it’s not as bad as the guy who dresses up like tinkerbell and just married his fellow fairy, but this place ... is very strange

“In the year 2117, an 8-year-old gay boy named Shannon found a magic lamp.
He was granted three wishes. The first, a fur jacket. The second, a flying car.
And the third was a planet full of unicorns. This is the story of that planet...”

Welcome to Planet Unicorn, where the unicorns are named Cadillac, Feathers, and Tom Cruise.

If you have run across a rather odd website, put a link to it in the comments. What the Hell, it’ll be more fun than going on about McCain again.

Hollywood election in a nation under siege:  A WORTHY READ FOLKS.

People, this is a two page editorial on our elections in the USA and our choices.
I have done some fast and somewhat choppy editing here, so please catch the link.  Mr Heffer is a conservative and also an editor at The Telegraph.
Which doesn’t mean he always agrees with us or even the entire conservative viewpoint on all issues.  But he sure isn’t a pansy-assed libtard.
Anyway ... the guy is well worth reading.  I thought you might find the view from this observer interesting.

Hollywood election in a nation under siege
By Simon Heffer
Last Updated: 4:01pm GMT 06/02/2008Page 1 of

America has much to be defensive about these days. It is unpopular in the world, and it knows it. Its President – who goes unmentioned in the campaign for the White House, as if he had never existed – is a man many here find hard to respect, not least because they are aware how much contempt and ridicule he is held in around the world.

A massive deficit is being run up to try to stimulate the economy, with no great success so far. In some predominantly blue-collar states, such as Georgia, one in 50 homes is in danger of repossession. On New York’s Fifth Avenue, the people look more down at heel than they used to, and too many buildings look as though a little refurbishment would do no harm.

Just below the surface – for it is not really talked about – is the sense that this is a nation under siege. The ultra-vigilance demonstrated when you try to enter America, with fanatical security checks beginning before one even leaves London, seeps out now and again as paranoia in the conversation of rank-and-file Americans. This is the background against which the presidential campaign is being fought; and the unusual uncertainties and introspection of this country perhaps explain why the tournament’s outcome is so hard to predict, and why it has been laced with such shifts of fortune.

John McCain looked finished last summer: but thanks to his correct analysis of General Petraeus’s surge in Iraq, he has proved to most Republican activists that he is a man of wisdom on the most fundamental question facing America today. His lead in the Republican race is all but impregnable: but more of that later. The Democratic race, by contrast, will thrill those who find excitement in politics. To anyone with a leavening of cynicism – and that seems to include somewhat more of the American public than one might expect - it starts to have an aura of unreality.

It would be heartening for America, and for the world, to say that the less fatuous of the two campaigns will win: but it is hard to say which of them is the less fatuous.

Mr Obama orates, in his sub-Martin Luther King tones, of expansiveness and warmth, about “change”: a concept as meaningless and ill-defined here as when the leader of the Conservative party uses it in Britain. Mrs Clinton sounds like the headmistress of an underperforming school in her exhortations to America. Her principal policy is health care for all, a promise handicapped by her husband’s refusal to have released papers from his administration that might prove once and for all how responsible she was for the mess made of health care when charged to reform it after 1993. As in our own politics, competence is not much in evidence.

What you see is more or less what you get, which is why the ultra-conservatives here have in some cases (and with their focus on matters such as tax and immigration, rather than Iraq) said they would rather vote for Mrs Clinton than for him. His choice of running mate will be key: but those who think it might be Mr Huckabee underestimate, I think, Mr McCain’s innate caution. When you take office at the age of 72, your vice-president is more than an academic exercise.

Teacher fired airgun in gang row

By Nigel Bunyan

Last Updated: 1:32am GMT 04/02/2005

A teacher who fired an air pistol during an altercation with a gang of youths told police she had “had enough” of the law being on the side of criminals.Linda Walker, 47, claims she suffered weeks of abuse and vandalism at the hands of youngsters near her home in Urmston, Manchester. She finally snapped when she suspected they had vandalised her son’s car. Following an initial row, she ran back into the house and returned with a Walther air pistol and an air rifle.

She fired up to six shots into the pavement as she stood “nose to nose” with the convicted burglar she saw as her chief protagonist. She put both weapons down as armed police raced to the scene.

A jury at Minshull Street Crown Court, Manchester, heard that Walker later told officers: “I know you do your best, but the law is on their side. That’s why I rang 999 and ran out like a mad woman possessed, because I’d had it up to here. Everybody gets to that point where they’ve had enough. I’ve got to that point.”

Air gun teacher told she can work againLast Updated: 1:13am GMT 06/02/2008

A teacher who was jailed for confronting a group of youths with a pellet gun was told Tuesday that she could carry on teaching.
Linda Walker, 50, broke down in tears at a disciplinary hearing as she described how “ashamed” she was of her behaviour.

I’m a slow fellow. Someone will have to explain to me just why the victims should express remorse.

She said that she fired the weapon into the ground to deter the gang, which she believed had subjected her family to months of harassment.Following the incident in August 2004, Mrs Walker was jailed for six months for possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, and affray.

She spent a total of 38 days in custody but the appeal court later quashed her jail sentence, replacing it with a 12-month conditional discharge.

Children of foreign millionaire given £30,750 for court battle

Oh to be in England when it’s hand out time. Brits are the most generous ppl on earth.  Their ratepayers give and they give and they give.  And they would give even more but any monies left over are saved for illegal immigrants and those seeking asylum so they can make bomb in peace.

Legal aid for the rich: Children of foreign millionaire given £30,750 for court battle

By NEIL SEARS - More by this author »

Millionaire jeweller Iqbal Mubarik and his wife Aaliya Mubarak could not even agree how to spell their surname so maybe it was no surprise when they divorced.
He was told to pay her almost £5million but, eight years on, he has given her just £266,000 and spent £2million on legal fees trying to hang on to his money.
Even more astonishing is that two of their four children have been given legal aid of £30,750 to defend their interests.

Taxpayers are funding lawyers for the public-school educated children of a millionaire who manages to avoid paying tax and only moved to England ten years ago.

Now haven’t I been tellin’ ya and for how long?  The taxpayer is loaded and there’s plenty more where this came from you betcha.

High Court Judge Sir James Holman, hearing the latest stage of this Bleak House-style legal saga, said the affair was “about as bad a case as it is possible to imagine”.
The judge added that using legal aid for the children was “exquisitely ironical” as their parents “although resident here for tax purposes and liable for English taxation, manage to avoid paying any tax at all”.
In contrast, cuts to the legal aid budget include last month’s ruling that families of soldiers killed in action could not have free legal representation at inquests.
The Mubarik v Mubarak saga began in 1998 when Mr Mubarik, 48, an owner of the Dianoor Group of shops which has an outlet on New Bond Street in London, separated from his wife, 47.

In 1999, he was ordered to pay her a lump sum of £4.875million.
He has since gone to court repeatedly to try to avoid paying.
And as the family’s interest in the Dianoor jewellers is governed by trusts and companies established in the tax havens of Jersey and Bermuda, it is extremely hard to track Mr Mubarik’s money down.  The couple, from India, have four children, aged nine to 22, and for a couple of years the jeweller paid £14,000 a month maintenance.
By May 2005, he was paying only school fees, forcing his wife, who lives in Kensington, West London, to take out loans.

Mr Mubarik, who lives in a £ 2million house in Central London, has claimed he is £2.3million in debt.
But early in the case, he and business colleague Mohammed Wani, 58, were caught presenting false evidence.
The court decided he was worth “numerous millions”, with figures as high as £30million mentioned.
Last year, High Court Judge Sir David Bodey said: “The husband and wife have fought the good fight with all their might at considerable expense.
“The overall costs toll is appalling. It could involve litigation in four or five other countries, as well as here.
“The combined total is unclear, but before long it seems set to head off towards the direction of the amount of the lump sum.”

Even in 2000, Lord Justice Thorpe said it was “little short of tragic folly seemingly intelligent and civilised people should think that is a responsible way to make use of the family justice system”.
By 2004, he was describing the case as “insane”.
Aside from monthly maintenance paid in lieu of interest, Mrs Mubarak has managed to squeeze only £266,000 out of her ex-husband through enforcing the sale of property.  He now owes her about £7million, including legal costs and arrears.

The soaring bill for legal aid has risen to £620million a year for civil cases and £1.2billion for criminal.
Primarily, legal aid is supposed to be directed at people on benefits, or pensioners with an income of less than £289 a month.
A spokesman for the Legal Services Commission said a rule change in April meant similar legal aid payouts were unlikely as the capital and income of parents is now included in assessments.

Somebody ‘splain this to me pleez

Wind Farms Leave Holes In Radar Coverage

from today’s UK Times Online

Oh, the problems with going Green ....

Nato has begun an investigation into British findings that wind farms make overflying planes invisible to radar as military chiefs fear a security threat from the rapid spread of the turbines.

The US has been attending tests by Britain’s Air Warfare Centre after it made the surprise discovery that the energy plants create blind spots in air defences.

Renewable energy campaigners have been stung by a spate of last-minute objections from the Ministry of Defence to proposed new wind farms in northeast England and the Scottish Borders.

Nato’s alarm about this potential Achilles’ heel against airborne terrorists or invaders is disclosed in evidence, seen by The Times, for a planning inquiry.

The MoD is now objecting routinely to all wind farms within line of sight of radar stations, irrespective of distance. There is currently no known technical solution.

Evidence was given by Squadron Leader Chris Breedon, opposing a 48-turbine wind farm at Fallago Rig in the Lammermuir Hills in Scotland. “As a result of MoD trials proving that wind turbines adversely influence the performance of military and civilian radar systems operating within radar line of sight, Nato has become concerned about the rapid increase in the number of wind turbine farm projects under planning or in development in a number of Nato countries,” he said.

Britain is leading an investigation by the Nato Research & Technology Organisation into the impact of wind turbines on radar. The first meeting of a newly created technical group, involving the US, France, Italy, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands and Greece, took place in London in June. The experts will review all scientific evidence from trials, consult the wind farm industry and civil aviation authorities, decide what new trials are needed and recommend policy changes.

The problem is urgent because the stations tend to be on the east coast and the North Sea has been earmarked for a major expansion of offshore wind farms.

Since 9/11, radar policy has been dominated by fears of an airborne terrorist attack launched inside British air space, rather than an invasion from overseas. Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup, Chief of the Defence Staff, has given a firm direction that radar surveillance capability must not be degraded.

Despite the MoD’s stance, John Hutton, the Energy Secretary, went ahead with an announcement in December of 7,000 new turbines by 2020.

Study done by Gavin Poupart shows 4 ways that wind turbines can mess up radio signals , and more study may provide a partial solution - build the turbine blades out of stealth materials and shield the generators. That should only add a few zillion or so to the price tag.

Talk about an unintended consequence! Your choice: cheap “green” power or national air security.

Now, I think I can see why the radar coverage near these things could be messed up, but how can they affect radar returns from planes flying thousands of feet above them? I know we’ve got lots of Air Force vets here, and pilots, (well, we used to), so folks with some know-how, please sound off.

Now they want to ban mums and dads.  Someday this silly stuff will have to come to an end.

Richard Littlejohn

Now they want to ban mums and dads01:33am 5th February 2008

Schools are being ordered to drop the term “mum and dad” in case it offends pupils from a single-parent, homosexual or turkey-baster “family.”

Ed Balls, who runs the department of social engineering, also wants four-year-olds to be taught about same-sex relationships.
Teachers should avoid telling boys to “be a man” or stop behaving like a “bunch of old women.” And gay teachers are to be encouraged to discuss their private lives in class.

Presumably, pupils should stop saying “Please, Sir” when they put their hands up because it may upset the sensibilities of any maths master going through gender reassignment therapy.

And “Please, Miss” might cause a feminist headmistress to have a fit of the screaming ab-dabs and sue for com-pen-say-shun.

Children who use the playground taunt “gay” - as in “those trainers are so gay” - will be treated the same as racists.

Leave aside the fact that the first person I ever heard say “Oh, you’re so gay” was a gay friend of mine. Any child suspected of discrimination will be punished severely under a code of “zero tolerance.”

The Government commissioned the homosexual pressure group Stonewall and some obscure outfit called Education Action Challenging Homophobia to draw up guidelines on acceptable behaviour in schools.

Government accused of failing British Hindus, ah the famous thin edge makes it appearance.

February 5, 2008

Government accused of failing British Hindus

Ruth Gledhill, Religion Correspondent of The Times

Britain’s Hindu community, known for its peaceable love of sacred cows, for its annual Diwali festival of light and its opposition to conflict, has risen up in unprecedented anger against the Government led by Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Leaders of more than 50 organisations representing the country’s 800,000 Hindus met on Sunday to draw up a unanimous resolution that “The Labour Government has failed the British Hindu community.”

Hindus described as “outraged” by their representatives drew up the resolution in protest at the slaughter of Gangotri, the temple cow put down last year by the RSPCA because she was sick. Hindus administer pain relief to sick animals but prefer to let them die naturally.

another word of our times.  ‘outraged.’ everyone is always “outraged.” gets the job done I guess.

Prince Andrew rebukes America over Iraq

Have your say Read comments

The Duke of York has launched an unprecedented attack on President George W Bush’s White House administration for failing to listen more to the advice of the British Government over the Iraq war.

Have your say: Do you agree with the Duke’s criticisms?
The Duke’s criticism of Washington represents an extraordinary departure from normal protocol, which determines that members of the Royal Family refrain from public comment on sensitive international and political issues.

In a rare newspaper interview, with the International Herald Tribune, the Duke expresses his strong personal regret that the US failed to heed British advice over the post-war strategy for Iraq, with disastrous consequences.

On the eve of a 10-day mission to America in his role as British trade envoy, he told the newspaper that there were “occasions when people in the UK would wish that those in responsible positions in the US might listen and learn from our experiences”.

He said that because of Britain’s imperial history, it had experience of many of the foreign policy challenges now facing the US.

Islamist terrorists rebranded as ‘criminals’
By Philip Johnston
Last Updated: 1:54am GMT 05/02/2008

Islamist terrorists have been rebranded as “criminals” in a new guidebook for ministers and civil servants to help them talk about terrorism without offending Muslims.
The book has been issued to all government departments and says that people should no longer refer to Islamist extremism or jihadi fundamentalism.

Instead, they should refer to violent extremism and criminal murderers or thugs to avoid any implication that there is an explicit link between Islam and terrorism.

It warns those engaged in counter-terrorist work that talk of a struggle for values or a battle of ideas is often heard as a “confrontation/clash between civilisations/cultures”.

Ministers have been using the new rhetoric for some time and no longer refer to the “war on terror”.

The guide states: “This is not about political correctness, but effectiveness - evidence shows that people stop listening if they think you are attacking them.”

The guide was drawn up by the Research, Information and Communication Unit, a new “hearts and minds” outfit in the Home Office set up to counter al-Qa’eda’s efforts to manipulate individuals and groups.

In a speech on counter-terrorism last month, Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary, declared that violent extremism was “anti-Islamic”.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
