Leaks In The Dike

Several things jumped out at me while reading the story below. First, the murderer of Theo van Gogh is finally coming to trial. Second, the court is being held in a damned “bunker” to protect the judges and lawyers. Third, the most these Islamic criminals can get is 15 years in jail.

Is all that enough to convince you that Europe is running scared from Islamic immigrants who murder and pillage as they destroy Western civilization on the continent? In my opinion, Europe is a lost cause. The Dutch may as well go ahead and order a large stock of white flags from France so they can surrender along with the frogs to the new Fascists.

Everywhere over there they are caving in to the Islamic criminals and hiding from the hungry hordes flooding in from the Middle East. It isn’t over yet for the Euro-Peons but the end is in sight unless somebody over there grows a pair real fast. Here’s a tip for Europe: it’s 1939 all over again, the Fascist murderers are already over-running Europe and appeasement is not the answer. Hello! Is anyone listening ... ?

imageimageDutch Put Terror Group On Trial
AMSTERDAM (BBC)

Fourteen men are standing trial in the Netherlands charged with belonging to a radical Islamist terror network. Among the accused is Mohammed Bouyeri (pictured at left), already jailed for life for the murder of film-maker Theo van Gogh last year. The trial, the first to come to court under new anti-terror legislation, is being seen as a test case.

The suspects are alleged to be members of the so-called Hofstad group, based in The Hague. Two are also charged with trying to kill police with a grenade. Another of the men is accused of weapons offences after being arrested in Amsterdam last year with a loaded gun.

A court ruled in November that 27-year-old Bouyeri could stand trial a second time despite being given a life sentence in July. He confessed to killing Van Gogh - a critic of radical Islam - out of religious conviction. Bouyeri is alleged to have played a key role in the Hofstad network, hosting meetings of the group in his Amsterdam home and spreading radical texts. Prosecutors are using new anti-terror laws, brought in last year, which introduced a charge of “membership of a criminal organisation with terrorist intent”.

If found guilty, the men face jail sentences of up to 15 years. The BBC’s Geraldine Coughlan in The Hague says the new legislation may help prosecutors, who have suffered setbacks in recent terror trials. There is now more scope for them to build terrorist, rather than criminal, charges and for the defence to challenge evidence from the intelligence services, our correspondent says.

The trial, which starts on Monday morning in a high-security court in Amsterdam known as “the bunker”, is expected to last at least two months. Dutch teenager Samir Azzouz was cleared earlier this year of plotting attacks on Amsterdam airport, government buildings and a nuclear reactor after a court ruled there was no direct evidence.

Antics At Saddam’s Trial Continue

Saddam Hussein continues to make an ass out of himself and now he has the help of a former US Attorney General. Ramsey Clark tried to continue the “this court is illegitimate” argument and was smacked down both for his ridiculous argument and for not speaking to the court in the national language of Iraq. Will Liberals never learn? Clark is a poster child for Leftist, dictator-lovers everywhere. First of all, he has no business in the Iraqi court if he doesn’t speak Arabic and to tell the duly appointed judges of a free Iraq that they are “illegitimate” crosses the line and borders on arrogance. Something he shares with Saddam ....

imageimageSaddam’s Defense Team Walks Out of Court
Dec 5, 4:26 AM (ET)
BAGHDAD, Iraq (MYWAY NEWS)

Saddam Hussein’s defense team walked out of the courtroom Monday shortly after the former leader’s trial resumed because the judge refused to allow former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark to challenge the tribunal’s legitimacy in an address to the court. After the lawyers walked out, Saddam told the judge: “You are imposing lawyers on us. They are imposed lawyers. The court is imposed by itself. We reject that.”

Clark said he needed only two minutes to present his argument. But Chief Judge Rizgar Mohammed Amin said the tribunal had been established under the law by an elected Iraqi government and that only Saddam’s chief lawyer could address the hearing. Amin said the defense should submit its motion in writing and warned that if the defense walked out then the court would appoint replacement lawyers.

“We reject the appointment of court employees to defend us,” Saddam said. He and his half brother Barazan Ibrahim then chanted “Long live Iraq, long live the Arab state.” When the judge explained that he was ruling in accordance with the law, Saddam replied: “This is a law made by America and does not reflect Iraqi sovereignty.”

A guard tried to calm Ibrahim but he angrily told them to leave him alone. The defense maintained that the court could not proceed to issues of substance before the matter of legitimacy and other procedural matters were resolved. Saddam’s chief lawyer, Khalil al-Dulaimi, demanded that the court halt its proceedings until the challenge is ruled on. The judge replied that the proceedings must go on while the challenge is being deliberated.

Clark spent about 15 minutes trying to address the court, but the judge wouldn’t let him, arguing that Arabic is the only recognized language of the court. “We will give you enough time to address the court at a suitable time,” said the judge. At that point, Saddam snapped: “The American occupation continues.”

Skipper’s Christmas Wish List

In case any of you great, wonderful people out there in BlogLand want to buy The Skipper a Christmas present this year, I would like to direct your attention to the following item from legendary gun maker Smith & Wesson. The Skipper already has a Desert Eagle and he thought that was the most powerful handgun in the world. Now he is sad. Help us make Skipper happy .... and maybe help us stop him from drooling all over the cabin floor every time he looks at this hand cannon ....

Model 460 XVR Revolver

image

We all grew up hearing the phrase, “Faster than a speeding bullet...,” but not when it is fired from Smith & Wesson’s new Model 460XVR, with the highest muzzle velocity of any production revolver on earth. The Model 460XVR is so revolutionary that it required an entirely new designation...XVR, X-treme Velocity Revolver.

Starting with their Extra Large Frame, the Smith & Wesson engineers worked to deliver maximum velocity - over 2,300 feet per second - to reach the target faster than ever before. The 460XVR has interchangeable compensators to accommodate every load and includes a HI-VIZ® front sight for accurate target acquisition. Plus, its “gain-twist” rifled barrel means superb long-range accuracy (beyond 200 yards) with every shot! Only Smith & Wesson could deliver this much power, this much velocity and this much accuracy in a precision, production revolver.

Lies & The Lying Media Who Report Them

Current score: US Military - 1, Mainstream Media - 0 ....

imageimageMaj. Gen. Rick Lynch Turns Tables on Media
Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005
(NEWSMAX)

The American media is up in arms over reports that the Pentagon hired a public relations firm to write positive news stories about the Iraq war and get them printed in the Iraqi press. But Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch, spokesman for U.S. forces in Baghdad, isn’t letting journalists get away with their phony display of outrage. After the New York Times front-paged the “fake news” story Thursday under the headline: “U.S. Is Said to Pay to Plant Articles in Iraq Papers,” Gen. Lynch defended the practice.

“We don’t lie. We don’t need to lie,” he told reporters in Baghdad. “We do empower our operational commanders with the ability to inform the Iraqi public, but everything we do is based on fact, not based on fiction.”

Sounds to us like Gen. Lynch was taking a none too subtle jab at the mainstream media’s penchant for reporting - not just planted stories - but its own faked news reports. Perhaps the next time he’s questioned about “planting” stories, he’ll get even more specific, by reminding the military’s accusers of their own sorry history.

Beginning with:

• The New York Times - and the false reports the Old Gray Lady printed about PFC Jessica Lynch - courtesy of Jayson Blair.

• The Washington Post - which won a Pulitzer Prize for its series on Little Jimmy, the 8-year-old heroin addict - which the paper had to give back once star Post reporter Janet Cooke admitted she’d faked the whole story.

• CBS - Perhaps at the next press briefing, Gen. Lynch could inquire as to whether the Tiffany network has yet discovered just who it was who forged President Bush’s National Guard records - before Dan Rather committed professional suicide by putting them in the air.

• NBC - Gen. Lynch might offer the Peacock network a hearty round of congratualtions for their relatively good conduct over the last decade. It’s been more than 10 years since NBC aired video of an exploding GM truck gas tank - which was faked by their reporters.

In fact, the list of fake news stories reported by the mainstream press is so long it would make even Baghdad Bob blush. It’s good to know that some in the military - like Gen. Lynch - aren’t about to let the press’ hypocrisy go unnoted.

Unlike the morons at MoveOn.org, when BMEWS shows you pictures of American troops in Iraq they are American troops ... and what they are doing is risking their lives so morons like those at Moron.org can whine and cry and rant and rave and complain and protest and ... you get the picture. My personal thanks to the fine troops at CENTCOM for sharing these pictures with us. Seasons greetings to all our troops far away from home. Come home safely when the job is done. We’ll be waiting and praying.

Opening Salvo

On your marks. Get set. GO! It looks like the Donks are going to go ahead and kick off the 2006 election campaign a little early. Howard The Duck fired the opening salvos yesterday in Phoenix. Not surprisingly, there was a lot of name-calling of Republicans and exaggerations. In the middle of The Screaming Meemie’s diatribe though were what will become the Dummycraps’ main talking points for the next 11 months. It seems they have settled on immigration and Iraq as attack points. Oh ... and they still want socialized healthcare, tax the crap out of everyone and no military. Same ol’, same ol’.

Look for the clueless Left to use every dirty trick, including lying and outright distortion, to hammer the Bush administration and Republicans in general. This election could very well be the last hurrah for the Donks and they are afraid. Very afraid. The party is on the verge of becoming marginalized in the overall picture of American politics. They have swung too far Left over the last thirty years and the American people want no part of it. Look for the Donk’s running in the upcoming mid-term elections next year to wage total, all-out warfare. It’s gonna be ugly ....

imageimageDean Hammers Bush On War, Immigration
DNC Chief Gives Preview of ‘06 Race
December 4, 2005
PHOENIX (WASHINGTON POST)

Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean offered a preview of the 2006 elections here Saturday with a blistering critique of President Bush’s policies on Iraq and immigration and the Republicans’ ethics scandals. But he warned Democrats they cannot expect to win next year without offering an agenda of their own.

Speaking at the fall meeting of the Democratic National Committee, Dean pledged that Democrats would offer tax policies aimed at middle-class voters, a plan to provide health insurance to all Americans, immigration proposals that offer a path to legalization for illegal immigrants, and defense policies that would protect the nation and expose the “hollow promises” of the Bush administration.

Dean warmly praised Rep. John P. Murtha (D-Pa.) for “standing up and telling the truth” about Bush’s policies in Iraq, and suggested that the Pennsylvanian had offered a vision around which Democrats could rally. But Dean stopped well short of embracing Murtha’s call for a withdrawal plan that would redeploy all U.S. troops within about six months. Instead Dean called on Democrats to coalesce around a proposal that would keep some U.S. forces in Iraq for two more years.

The former Vermont governor’s remarks underscored the party’s continuing debate over Iraq and the reluctance of many party leaders to support Murtha’s call for a speedy withdrawal strategy. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) announced her support for Murtha’s plan last week, but others in the party leadership have declined to do so, in part out of fears that a swift withdrawal could leave Iraq worse off than it is today and hand the GOP a political weapon.

Dean came to national prominence in 2003 by opposing Bush’s decision to invade Iraq and has spoken for the party’s antiwar grass-roots activists. But in his speech he blended strong criticism of the president for going to war under false pretenses with a more measured endorsement of a plan promoted by the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank, which would redeploy about 80,000 U.S. troops from Iraq in 2006 and the remainder by the end of 2007.

Displaying the fiery style that excited many Democrats during his unsuccessful presidential campaign, Dean attacked “political hacks and cronies” of the president for eroding civil rights and voting rights protections, and said of Republicans: “Theirs is a party of self-absorption and selfishness.”

Saying Bush had used race and gay rights to divide the electorate, Dean said, “In 2006, it’s going to be immigration; that’s who he’s going to scapegoat next.” He said Democrats must favor tougher enforcement of existing immigration laws and provide tighter border security, but said a balanced immigration policy would provide a way to give many of the 11 million illegal immigrants a path to legal status.

Weekend Discussion: Nguyen Tuong Van

imageimageThree years in a prison in Singapore. A year and a half on death row. A five minute walk to the gallows. A few seconds to fall before the rope tightens and the neck snaps. All this for smuggling 400 grams of heroin. I’m on the fence on this one. Help me decide.

I have provided two clips from yesterday and today’s news below as well as a link to the official trial transcript. In spite of what you may think of Singapore, the trial record shows a remarkably sophisticated judicial system with well-defined laws and punishments for crimes and protection for the accused in the form of defense attorneys and evidentiary proof requirements.

With that said, help me understand if you think this punishment was justified and whether or not hanging should be condoned. Bear in mind that this is not the US or the UK or any Western country where this happened. I have a certain opinion on this but I want to hear from our readers first ....

First, the last minutes of Nguyen Tuong Van yesterday ....

A Final Embrace Before Van Faced Fate
December 2, 2005
(WEEKEND AUSTRALIAN)

Just before dawn, as the rest of Changi prison’s inmates slept, Australian drug trafficker Nguyen Tuong Van took his last steps, embraced a prison official and with his mind “at great peace”, met his death on the gallows. Almost three years to the day after he was arrested carrying heroin through Singapore’s international airport, the 25-year-old former Melbourne salesman was put to death under the island state’s unwavering capital punishment laws.

Twin brother Khoa sat in a room with friends in the prison’s visitor centre, so he could be near Van for his final moments, as his mother, Kim, prayed for her son’s soul in a service held at a small chapel across town. At 6am (AEDT 9am), the scheduled time of his execution, no official word came - but there was little doubt in the minds of his family and friends that the long and torturous battle to save Van had been lost.

Van’s Australian-based barrister, Julian McMahon, said Mrs Nguyen had been “well prepared” by her condemned son and was the most composed she had been for months. In the minutes before his death, Van was joined in prayer by two prison pastoral workers, who later described him as “calm and inspiring to the end”.

- More on Van’s execution here ...

Second, the final trip home as Van’s body was returned to Australia today ....

Body of Australian Smuggler Returns Home
December 3, 2005
SINGAPORE (AP)

The body of an executed Australian drug smuggler returned home from Singapore in the company of his weeping mother Saturday. Nguyen Tuong Van’s body was flown from Singapore to the southern Australian city of Melbourne, a day after Nguyen was hanged at Singapore’s Changi Prison. His mother, Kim Nguyen, wept quietly as she sat in front of a check-in counter at Singapore’s airport, covering her face with her hands. His brother Khoa wore black, with a Catholic rosary around his neck. The family did not speak to reporters.

Nguyen, 25, was executed before dawn Friday despite numerous appeals for clemency from Australian leaders and his lawyers. He received a mandatory death sentence after being caught with 14 ounces of heroin at Singapore’s airport in 2002 and convicted of drug smuggling. Lawyer Lex Lasry, who accompanied Nguyen’s mother and brother on their flight, said the campaign against the death penalty by advocates for Nguyen would not stop with the execution. He urged the Australian government to oppose execution in all cases, even when it was used to punish terrorists.

Australia scrapped the death penalty in 1973 and hanged its last criminal in 1967, while Singapore has executed more than 100 people for drug-related offenses since 1999. But Australia has supported the death penalty for the three militants convicted of taking part in the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people, including 88 Australians, saying it sends a clear message of zero tolerance for terrorism. An execution date has not been set. “The death penalty is something we simply must oppose in every case,” Lasry said. “We can’t pick and choose anymore. If you are against it you are against it for everyone.”

- More on the Australian reaction here ...

Finally, the official trial transcript as recorded by the court reporter ....

PUBLIC PROSECUTOR vs Nguyen Tuong Van
Suit No: CC 43/2003
Decision Date: 20 Mar 2004
Court: High Court
Coram: Kan Ting Chiu
Counsel: Han Ming Kuang and Lee Cheow Han (Deputy Public Prosecutors) for prosecution, Joseph Theseira (Naidu Mohan and Theseira) and Tito Shane Isaac (Tito Isaac and Co) for accused

The accused, Nguyen Tuong Van, appeared before me charged that he:

1. [O]n the 12th day of December 2002, at or about 3.06 pm, at Changi International Airport Terminal 2, Singapore, did import into Singapore, a controlled drug specified in Class “A” of the First Schedule to the Misuse of Drugs Act, Chapter 185, to wit, 2 packets of powdery substance containing not less than 396.2 grams of diamorphine, without any authorisation under the said Act or the Regulations made thereunder, and [he has] thereby committed an offence under section 7 of the Misuse of Drugs Act, Chapter 185 and punishable under section 33 of the Misuse of Drugs Act.

2. He is an Australian national aged 23 years. On 12 December 2002 he arrived in Singapore from Phnom Penh. At about 7.45pm he was at Boarding Gate C22 of the airport waiting to board a flight to Melbourne. During a routine check, a police officer felt something bulky on his lower back. He was brought to a search room for a thorough search, taking his haversack and business bag with him.

3. In the search room he was asked to remove his jacket and shirt. When that was done, a plastic packet was seen strapped to his lower back with masking tape. At that stage he started crying and tried to hit his head against a wall.

4. Sergeant Teh Kim Leng (“Sgt Teh”), the officer in charge of the security screening unit, was notified. He went to the search room and saw the accused, who appeared to be in distress, holding his head with his hands. When Sgt Teh asked him what was on his back, the accused replied that it was heroin. With the help of Sgt Teh the accused removed the packet from his body. When Sgt Teh asked him if there was anything to declare in his luggage, the accused opened the haversack, took out another packet, and handed it to him.

5. The two packets were subsequently sent for analysis. The packet from the body was found to contain not less than 151.5g of diamorphine and the other packet not less than 244.7g. The analysis results were not disputed.

6. The Central Narcotics Bureau (“CNB”) was then informed of the matter. At 9.10pm CNB officers arrived at the airport and took over the case from the airport police. At about 10.05pm Station Inspector Ng Beng Chin (“SI Ng”) spoke to the accused and recorded a statement from him. SI Ng and the accused appended their signatures to the statement after it was recorded and read back to the accused.

- Read the official trial transcripts here ...

Now you know what I know. Get it off your chest. What do you think?

Gee, Thanks!

First they shot at rescuers during the flooding after Katrina, now they’re threatening to shoot FEMA workers who are trying to help them get back into their homes. The thing is, if FEMA does what they should and just walks away, they’ll whine and complain that the government is not looking after them and “Bush lied, blah-blah-blah”. Dammit, if I were in charge, I’d bulldoze the whole place to the ground and tell these ungrateful wretches to go pound sand ....

imageimageFEMA Pulls Out of Lower Ninth
Agency Calls for Troops, Reporting Threats of Violence
NEW ORLEANS (WASHINGTON POST)

The Federal Emergency Management Agency pulled all its workers out of New Orleans’s Lower Ninth Ward yesterday after threats of violence and planned to request additional police or National Guard support, a FEMA spokeswoman said. The Lower Ninth Ward was reopened Thursday; it was the last neighborhood in the city to remain closed as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Residents, who had been limited to bus tours, were allowed to reenter homes, inspect damage and retrieve items but not stay in the area, which still lacks electricity.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers workers near levees and FEMA workers—who were on hand to help remove debris, set up disaster service centers and coordinate relief—received numerous threats, said FEMA spokeswoman Nicol Andrews . About 20 FEMA workers were withdrawn from the area, Andrews said.

“It’s unfortunate that threats of violence would be made against anyone, as we all work together to recover from this disaster,” Andrews said. “The first priority is to protect and ensure the safety of FEMA workers. There are a lot of employees working hard . . . to help folks return to their homes and ensure they are receiving the assistance they are eligible for under the law.”

One relief worker in the region said an angry resident berated a Corps of Engineers employee before delivering a threat to the effect of “I’m going to go get my gun, and I’m going to kill you.” Federal agents have arrested six people in the New Orleans area in recent weeks for making threats against FEMA workers, who have been advised against wearing clothing with the agency logo in public. A New Orleans Police spokesman did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Moonbat E-Mail

I get several hundred e-mails each week. Some good, some nasty. Some even declaring fatwah against me. The latter I turn over to the local FBI office. Some, however, are just plain silly. Those are usually from some asshat liberal with no life and way too much time on their hands. I intend to start sharing some of them with you ... just fer grins. This week’s submission comes from Southern Kalifornia and an out-of-work musician who has finally learned to count and is damned proud of that achievement ....

What a spineless and cowardly website. You really have no gut, except for the beer variety.

At least liberals count the dead. The Republicowards like yourselves want to sweep the bodies of those braver than yourself under the carpet.

Republicans are cowards because they will never fight the wars they support. They would rather send others to do their fighting and dying. And if they don’t like what others say - censor them.

The 4-year 911 bush boy grace period is over. He had his chance and he failed.

Word For The Day: SEXSOMNIA

I couldn’t make this up. No way. No how. You gotta admit, however, it makes a fantastic defense case ....

“Sexsomnia”
TORONTO (Reuters)

The Canadian province of Ontario plans to review a court decision that acquitted a man of sexual assault charges because he suffers from “sexsomnia” and was asleep at the time of the incident. The Office of the Attorney General, which oversees the province’s prosecutions, said on Thursday it needs to research its options for an appeal because of the strange circumstances of the case.

“This matter will be carefully considered to determine our next steps,” said Brendan Crawley, a spokesman for the Attorney General. Jan Luedecke, 33, was acquitted of sexual assault charges on Tuesday because he said he was asleep during the attack. A sleep expert testified that Luedecke suffers from a disorder that causes sexsomnia—involuntary sexual behavior during sleep—which he had experienced before.

The court heard that Luedecke and the female victim met at a party. She testified she fell asleep and woke up to find Luedecke having sex with her. She pushed him away and called the police. Luedecke confessed to police after he discovered was still wearing a condom and realized he had had sex. Canadian media reported that the victim left the courtroom in tears when the verdict was read, and said she would take the case to the highest court possible. The Crown has 30 days to present its appeal.

Hall Of Fame Candidate

If I ever get around to finishing up building the Barking Moonbat Hall Of Fame, this gentleman will undoubtedly be one of the first inductees. I am amazed at the lengths some people will go to in order to prove they have no brains, morals or character. What puzzles me is why these sleazy characters are almost always found in the co-called “Blue States”. Maybe it’s true that voting for Democrats is an infectious disease that causes aberrant behavior. Hmmmm ... Let’s see - Howard Dean, John Kerry, Teddy Kennedy .... yep, it sure looks like a deadly mental disease of epic proportions. I say we nuke the all the “Blue States” before this disease spreads to “Red State” country. What say you ...?

imageimageTHIEF WENT ON WHIP TRIPS
(NEW YORK POST)

Dominatrix Lady Sage, who’s really 43-year-old Ohio grandmom Pam DeBord, gets $250 an hour for her spank service. A heartless man who embezzled more than $200,000 from a cardiac charity left his wife and family behind to fly to Ohio for kinky trysts with his raven- haired S&M “mistress,” authorities said yesterday. Abraham Alexander flew world-famous whip-wielder Lady Sage to the Big Apple for his beat-downs — but when he couldn’t wait for her to come to him, he went to her, according to receipts showing his illicitly bought airline tickets and rented cars.

Alexander went from low-level accounts-receivable clerk at the Cardiovascular Research Foundation to jet-setting playboy of pain, with more than $200,000 he took from the heart-disease research organization, prosecutors charge. It is not clear exactly when or how many times he met with the 43-year-old back- paddling Columbus grandmother, but it may have been as recently as the past few months. “I saw him twice. One time he got out of a red car, it could have been a Mustang,” Lady Sage’s neighbor, Chris Murtha, said yesterday. “The other time, he came in her car and picked her up.”

Alexander simply cut checks to himself from the company coffers, authorities claimed yesterday. The Long Island man, who is now separated from his wife, took advantage of his position in the accounts receivable department to access the computer program used in the organization’s financial transactions, documents filed by the Manhattan DA’s Office show. Alexander would then forge or alter the group’s checks in a way that made them payable to himself and his private American Express and Capital One cards.

Much of that money was used to pay for pricey private meet-and-beat sessions with the S&M mistress, sources said. According to the prosecution’s documents, Alexander took a total of $237,162.40 from the foundation. Of that, some $30,000 was forked over to the $250-an-hour Lady Sage for fees, sources said. That number includes $11,000 paid to a company called Through the Looking Glass, which is apparently Sage’s corporate name. Prosecution documents released yesterday said he carried out the check forgery and theft between November 2003 and April 20 this year.

He was arrested Monday on Avenue C in Manhattan. He is still being held in lieu of $10,000 bail. Lady Sage is a well-known dominatrix who travels the world working her whip for paying customers with a penchant for pain. According to her Web site, she charges $1,000 a day, plus expenses and her hourly fee, to travel to meet her clients.

Her husband — who said she is a mom of an adult son and a grandmother — said she has traveled as far as Egypt to dominate paying customers. A lawyer for Alexander could not be reached yesterday. Charity officials have said they expect the stolen money — which represents only a fraction of their multimillion-dollar yearly revenue — to be covered by insurance.

Death Penalty Discussion

You’re going to hear a lot about this story today and probably through the weekend because Liberals love numbers. They celebrated when the 2,000th US soldier was killed in Iraq and now they’re marking the execution of the 1,000th prisoner to die by the death penalty in the US as their “cause celebrè du jour”. As usual, I’m confused by their reasoning. Why is it perfectly all right to kill an unborn child who has harmed no one and hasn’t had a chance to do any harm but it’s not all right to kill a convicted murderer who brutally killed two family members in a violent rage? I just don’t get it.

Anyway, there were the usual candlelight vigils and pleas for mercy and cries to “stop the killing”. The man’s lawyer doesn’t understand that the world will be safer without this murderer around and his son thinks dad “deserves a second chance”. I’m sorry but I disagree with both of them entirely. There are some acts, murder being one of them, that deserve no second chance, particularly if it was premeditated and brutally committed.

All I can think of is how this man’s wife and her father must have begged and pleaded with him not to kill them as he stood there with a .357 magnum and snuffed out their lives without any remorse or mercy. The number I’m concerned with here is ... two. Two lives ended in a moment of blind rage. The death penalty is not punishment. It is society’s only way to protect itself from madmen. You don’t cure cancer by giving it a second chance. You remove it.

RALEIGH, North Carolina (CNN)

A convicted murderer was put to death Friday in the nation’s 1,000th execution since capital punishment resumed in 1977. Kenneth Lee Boyd, who was convicted of killing his estranged wife and father-in-law, received a lethal injection and was pronounced dead at 2:15 a.m. “The execution of Kenneth Boyd has not made this a better or safer world,” his attorney, Thomas Maher, said. “If this 1,000th execution is a milestone, it’s a milestone we should all be ashamed of.”

In his final words, Boyd asked his daughter-in-law to take care of his son and grandchildren and said, “God bless everybody in here.” His execution came after both Gov. Mike Easley and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to intervene. About 150 protesters gathered at the prison in Raleigh, where prison officials tightened security. Police arrested 16 protesters late Thursday who sat down on the prison’s four-lane driveway, officials said.

Boyd, 57, did not deny that he shot and killed Julie Curry Boyd, 36, and her father, 57-year-old Thomas Dillard Curry. Family members said Boyd stalked his estranged wife after they separated following 13 stormy years of marriage and once sent a son to her house with a bullet and a threatening note.

In Boyd’s plea for clemency, his attorneys argued his experiences in Vietnam—where as a bulldozer operator he was shot at by snipers daily—contributed to his crimes. As the execution drew near, Boyd was visited by a son from a previous marriage, who was not present during the slayings.

“He made one mistake, and now it’s costing him his life,” said Kenneth Smith, 35, who visited with his own wife and two children. “A lot of people get a second chance. I think he deserves a second chance.”

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
