Idiots On Parade In Cuba

Fidel Castro (who by the way is an old fishing budddy of both Jimmy Carter and Dan Rather) must be getting a real laugh out of this. These liberal jerks couldn’t have gotten into the country without his permission and/or assistance. I have no idea what they hope to accomplish except for a little publicity and the everlasting thanks of communist dictator Castro who only stays alive to occasionally poke a stick in America’s eye. These nut cases are nothing more than tools. Useless tools who, in my humble opinion, should never be allowed back into the US. Let Castro keep ‘em ....

December 9, 2005, 7:39 AM EST
HAVANA (AP)

American activists reached the halfway point in a long trek toward the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay to protest treatment of terror suspects, but it appeared unlikely the communist government would let them enter a Cuban military zone to reach the U.S. outpost.

Marchers from the largely Christian group, Witness Against Torture, said by cellular telephone on Thursday that they had completed about half of the 50-mile trek from the eastern city of Santiago.

The 25 marchers, who set out Wednesday, hope to arrive at—or at least near to—the naval base by Saturday, which is International Human Rights Day. The march was organized by the Catholic Worker movement, an anti-war and social justice alliance.

“We don’t know how far we can get, so every step forward is an amazing thing,” said Shelia Stumph, a 28-year-old marcher from Raleigh, N.C. If denied entry to the base, they have said they will fast and pray for the abolition of torture by all nations.

The U.S. government says the roughly 500 foreign terror suspects at Guantanamo Bay are enemy combatants, not prisoners of war, and are not entitled to the same rights afforded under the Geneva Convention. Critics say that leaves the door open to the use of torture.

Cuban officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press, said it was unlikely that the island’s Revolutionary Armed Forces would allow marchers to traverse the miles-wide military zone that has surrounded the American base since shortly after the 1959 triumph of the Cuban revolution.

Cuba’s elite Frontier Brigade considers its military zone its front line of defense against the United States, which it accuses of trying to undermine its government for more than four decades. Permission to enter the area is rarely granted to civilians—especially foreigners—and even then only after months of deliberations.

Canuckistan To Ban Handguns

When will Liberals ever learn? Guns don’t kill people - bad ideas kill people. You can be killed just as easily with a screwdriver as with a gun. All it takes is a criminal mentality and a quick jab. Liberals don’t understand this. Instead they push through laws coddling criminals, giving them lighter jail sentences, if any at all and blame the gun the criminal used instead of the criminal himself.

In Canuckistan, the Liberal Party is already in deep trouble anyway because of several scandals a few years back. With a general election coming up in January, this may just be a ploy to pander to their liberal base. Either way, the Conservatives in Canuckistan better start fighting back before our neighbor up North goes completely down the drain ....

Canadian PM Pledges Ban on Handguns
December 09, 2005
Ottawa (CNSNews.com)

After 12 years in power, Canada’s governing Liberal Party pledged Thursday to ban all handguns from Canada’s streets, with very few exceptions. Prime Minister Paul Martin, on the campaign hustings prior to the January 23 general election, made the pledge in Toronto, which has seen a record number of crimes involving handguns this year.

Gunfire has been responsible for 50 of the 74 homicides in Toronto so far this year, an unprecedented number, even for Canada’s largest metropolis. “I’ve come to the conclusion that significant change is needed,” Martin told an election rally. “I’ve come to the conclusion that we should ban handguns.”

Under the current system, handguns are prohibited but people are allowed to possess a restricted firearm for target practice, target shooting competitions, as part of a collection or, in some cases, for employment purposes or to protect life.

Martin said his government, if re-elected, would immediately introduce the handgun ban, offering narrowly defined exemptions for target shooters and allowing collectors time to sell or dispose of their weapons. It was not immediately clear what would happen in the case of those allowed to carry guns for employment or protection.

Early reaction from the two main opposition parties in parliament was muted. Both Stephen Harper, leader of the Conservative Party, and Jack Layton, leader of the left-wing New Democrats, said they needed more time to study the Martin plan in detail.

But spokesmen for the two parties, briefing reporters on the campaign trails, suggested the Liberal proposals did not meet the root of the problem. The Conservatives said minimum mandatory prison sentences should be imposed, a longstanding Conservative policy, which Martin is now embracing as part of his new plan.

More Airline Stupidity

Don’t worry. I’ll ask the obvious question for you ... “If these two lovely ladies had been an ugly guy he would have been shot, right?” I hereby sentence these two brazen criminals to 200 hours of community service at The Skipper’s apartment. Case closed.

imageimagePlaymates Arrested After Flight
DENVER (CBS4)

Two Playboy playmates found themselves in trouble after apparently getting drunk and unruly on a Frontier Airlines flight out of Denver International Airport last weekend. CBS4 learned the playmates were arrested when the plane landed in San Antonio, Texas Sunday after the flight from Denver landed. They were apparently so drunk on the plane that they were deemed a danger to themselves and others.

The playmates were Danielle Gamba, 23, and Carrie Minter, 22 (pictured at left). Both were taken to jail in San Antonio for more than 5 hours after being arrested. “There was some yelling and cussing,” David Hebert, a spokesman for the San Antonio airport said. “They were charged with public intoxication.”

Police reports and reports from Frontier said the women were unruly on the 2 hour flight. They fought with each other and other passengers. Minter was apparently on her way from Denver to San Antonio for a lingerie show. Gamba, who said she loves to travel, is a former Oakland Raiders Cheerleader.

“One of the women started saying she was a celebrity and that’s why the passenger who complained ‘shouldn’t mess with her,’ and that sort of thing,” Hebert said. Authorities in San Antonio said it became even more bizarre. Gamba reportedly may have tried another tactic to avoid arrest.

“At one point he said one of the women made sexual advances toward both the primary officer and the officer who was there for backup,” Hebert said. Frontier said the women’s behavior compromised the safety of the flight. CBS4 was not able to contact the playmates for comment.

Stoopid People Alert!

WARNING: This alert is for anyone who still believes eating Drano is good or brushing your teeth with Preparation H is OK and especially for those who believe “THIS END UP” means stack the box with that side down. Today’s Mister Obvious Alert concerns metal braces and oral sex. YIKES ...!!

Metal Dental Braces Can Rip a Condom and
Tear Sensitive Tissues, Increasing Potential for STDs

- Get the obvious facts here ...

Teens engaging in sexual practices such as oral sex or French kissing should be cautious if they or their partners wear metal braces on their teeth, said Boston cosmetic dentist Helaine Smith (http://www.helainesmithdmd.com).

Metal braces can scratch delicate genital areas, tear sensitive mouth tissues, or rip a hole in a condom. Such incidents increase the potential for sexually transmitted diseases and blood-borne pathogens, including HIV/AIDS, chlamydia, and hepatitis B and C.

“Most teens and young adults don’t realize that metal dental braces can do some damage,” said Dr. Smith. “And while new dental technologies such as Invisalign and plastic braces have been introduced, the fact is, many dentists still rely on the traditional metal braces and their nickel titanium brackets, wires, and ties. Even plastic braces still use metal wires and ties that can cause damage.”

Because the metal brackets and wires can catch on the thin latex of condoms and dental dams and cause microscopic tears, Dr. Smith advises teens and young adults to carefully consider whether to engage in oral sex with partners who wear wire braces. Safer sex practices also include changing the condom before engaging in another sexual activity in order to reduce the risk of STDs and/or unintended pregnancy – even if one thinks the condom has not been damaged. Dental dams, which are also made of latex, are used when performing oral sex on a woman and protect against herpes and genital warts. Dr. Smith advises young adults to also exercise caution when participating in long kissing sessions with partners who wear braces because the brackets can tear delicate mouth tissues and increase the exposure to blood-borne pathogens and STDs such as HIV/AIDs.

Sexually transmitted diseases are among the most common infections in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), an estimated 15.3 million new cases of STDs are reported each year in the U.S. Despite STD prevention efforts, the U.S. has the highest rates of STDs in the industrialized world. The CDC recommends that one not engage in sexual activities with partners who exhibit signs of STDs, including mouth or genital rashes, sores or discharge.

Heat Wave

The only problem I have with this story is that I sit here in my office and gaze out the window at the hot sun beating down mercilessly on this dusty midwest town. I wonder how much cooler it would be if those nasty man-made chlorofluorocarbon gasses and SUV emissions hadn’t messed up the atmosphere so badly that we are now roasting in our own juices here.

It is a stifling 20ºF outside right now and the air conditioner is going full blast. I need to go to the store but I’m afraid I don’t have enough sunscreen to protect me. Don’t you people get it? There must be, I don’t know, about 4-5 inches of snow on the ground and more coming down steadily in almost whiteout conditions here in St. Louis! This is madness! I can’t take any more of this global warming heat wave ....

imageimageScientists: Greenland Glaciers Retreating
SAN FRANCISCO (MYWAY NEWS)

Two of Greenland’s largest glaciers are retreating at an alarming pace, most likely because of climate warming, scientists said Wednesday. One of the glaciers, Kangerdlugssuaq, is currently moving about 9 miles a year compared to 3 miles a year in 2001, said Gordon Hamilton of the University of Maine’s Climate Change Institute.

The other glacier, Helheim, is retreating at about 7 miles a year - up from 4 miles a year during the same period. “It’s quite a staggering rate of increase,” Hamilton said at the American Geophysical Union annual meeting.

Glaciers play a major role in discharging water into oceans. Sea levels have swelled globally an estimated 4 inches to 8 inches during the past century due to melting glaciers and polar ice - enough to cause some places to be awash at high tide or during severe storms.

Melting of Greenland ice and calving of icebergs from glaciers is responsible for about 7 percent of the annual rise in global sea level. Global warming is frequently blamed for retreating glaciers around the world. The rapid retreat of Greenland glaciers suggest that climate change is a factor, Hamilton said.

Meanwhile, one of the fastest melting glaciers in North America has reached the halfway point of disintegration and will continue retreat for another two decades.

Here is what the view outside my apartment looks like right now. Yep! The Winter Solstice is two weeks away and the worst is yet to come. Lows for tonight are predicted to be around 9ºF (wind chill of -18ºF). Are we having sunburn fun yet? Break out the Coopertone! Let’s have a pool party! Yay!

Religious Discrimination?

For the record, Collinsville, Illinois is right across the river from St. Louis. I don’t see why these pharmacists don’t just move across the river. Missouri is a bit more rational than the Soviet Socialist Republic Of Illinois. Then again, as far as I’m concerned Walgreen’s is not a good place to work. They have screwed up my prescriptions here four times in the last eight months. Anyway, here’s the story below. I’ll let you decide who you think is in the right (or wrong) here. If you want contact information, I will also provide you with the web sites of all interested parties ....

Group Files Complaint Over Disciplined Walgreen Pharmacists
ST. LOUIS (MSNBC)

Walgreen Co. engaged in religious discrimination by ‘’effectively firing’’ three Illinois pharmacists who refused to fill prescriptions for emergency contraception, a public-interest group alleged Wednesday. The American Center for Law and Justice, founded by evangelist Pat Robertson, said it had filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

The group said the pharmacists were put on unpaid leave Nov. 28 because the drug store chain said they violated a state rule mandating that such prescriptions be filled. ‘’Since the pharmacists believe that human life begins at conception, they conclude that dispensing such drugs would require them to participate in the moral equivalent of abortion,’’ the Washington-based group said in a statement.

‘’I knew when these drugs came out I would never be able to dispense them,’’ pharmacist John Menges, who worked in a Walgreens store in Collinsville until being placed on leave, told The Associated Press. Frank Manion of the ACLJ declined to release a copy of the complaint, saying such matters routinely are confidential. The local EEOC office did not immediately return messages left seeking comment.

The Illinois rule — imposed by Gov. Rod Blagojevich in April — requires Illinois pharmacies that sell contraceptives approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to fill prescriptions for emergency birth control. Pharmacies that do not fill prescriptions for any type of contraception are not required to follow the rule.

‘’It is strictly stated in state law that pharmacists must fill prescriptions for emergency contraceptions,’’ said Tiffani Bruce, a spokeswoman for Deerfield, Ill.-based Walgreen. ‘’Anyone who takes issue with this law needs to address it with the state or the governor.’’ The three pharmacists — identified by the group as Menges, Richard Quayle and Carol Muzzarelli — were put on unpaid leave for refusing on religious and moral grounds to fill prescriptions for the morning-after pill. A fourth pharmacist who was put on leave returned to work Monday after agreeing in writing to follow the state rule.

Manion called a state or federal lawsuit likely if the company doesn’t reinstate the pharmacists. ‘’It’s important that a stand be taken here,’’ he said. Bruce said the three pharmacists have declined to accept the chain’s offer to find them work in Missouri, which has no such rule. Several lawsuits on behalf of pharmacists and pharmacy owners have been filed in opposition to the rule, many by Manion’s group and Americans United for Life, a Chicago-based public interest law firm.

In Cold Blood

Those of us who fly frequently have nightmares about this kind of scenario. It’s bad enough that we’re hurtling along, six miles above the earth at several hundred miles per hour. With today’s heightened security and the constant threat of terrorist attacks, it is almost enough to put anyone off of flying. Unfortunately, there is no other alternative for now.

If this man was bipolar, why wasn’t he on his medicine? Did the air marshals act properly? Was deadly force really necessary? Too many unanswered questions here for me. I do not like the idea of making the rest of the passengers sit with their hands on their heads while dogs sniff the luggage. Why does one man’s irrational act automatically place suspicion on the other passengers? People, we’re not being smart about this. When the authorities start to panic there is little hope for the rest of us ...

imageimageAir Marshal Kills Passenger, Citing Threat
Dec 7, 9:42 PM (ET)
MIAMI (AP)

An agitated passenger who claimed to have a bomb in his backpack was shot and killed by a federal air marshal Wednesday after he bolted frantically from a jetliner that was boarding for takeoff, officials said. No bomb was found. It was the first time since the Sept. 11 attacks that an air marshal had shot at anyone, Homeland Security Department spokesman Brian Doyle said. Another federal official said there was no apparent link to terrorism.

According to a witness, the passenger ran down the aisle of the Boeing 757, flailing his arms, while his wife tried to explain that he was mentally ill and had not taken his medication. The passenger, identified as Rigoberto Alpizar, indicated there was a bomb in his bag and was confronted by air marshals but ran off the aircraft, Doyle said. The marshals went after him and ordered him to get down on the ground, but he did not comply and was shot when he apparently reached into the bag, Doyle said.

Alpizar, a 44-year-old U.S. citizen, was gunned down on a jetway outside the American Airlines plane, which was parked at a gate at Miami International Airport. Alpizar had arrived earlier in the day from Quito, Ecuador, and Flight 924 was going to Orlando, near his home in Maitland. Relatives said Alpizar and his wife had been on a working vacation in Peru. A neighbor who said he had been asked to watch the couple’s home described the vacation as a missionary trip.

“We’re all still in shock. We’re just speechless,” a sister-in-law, Kelley Beuchner, said by telephone from her home in Milwaukee. The shooting occurred shortly after 2 p.m. as Flight 924 was about to take off for Orlando with the man and 119 other passengers and crew, American spokesman Tim Wagner said. After the shooting, investigators spread passengers’ bags on the tarmac and let dogs sniff them for explosives, and bomb squad members blew up at least two bags.

No bomb was found, said James E. Bauer, agent in charge of the Federal Air Marshals field office in Miami. He said there was no reason to believe there was any connection to terrorists. The concourse where the shooting took place was shut down for a half-hour, but the rest of the airport continued operating, officials said. Federal officials declined to say how many times Alpizar was shot, or reveal how many air marshals were on the plane.

Freedom Of Speech

Ann Coulter never gives up. She continues to try to convince Leftists to use their heads and act rationally. It ain’t gonna happen, Ann. Liberals like these college students are blinded by their own hate. They don’t want to hear any opposing opinion. All they know is that they need to shut up the opposition even if it means throwing pies ...

December 8, 2005, 5:10 AM EST
STORRS, Conn. (AP)

Conservative columnist Ann Coulter cut short a speech at the University of Connecticut amid boos and jeers, and decided to hold a question-and-answer session instead. “I love to engage in repartee with people who are stupider than I am,” Coulter told the crowd of 2,600 Wednesday.

Before cutting off her speech after about 15 minutes, Coulter called Bill Clinton an “executive buffoon” who won the presidency only because Ross Perot took 19 percent of the vote. Coulter’s appearance prompted protests from several student groups. About 100 people rallied outside the auditorium where she spoke, saying she spread a message of intolerance.

“We encourage diverse opinion at UConn, but this is blatant hate speech,” said Eric Knudsen, a 19-year-old sophomore journalism and social welfare major who heads campus group Students Against Hate. It wasn’t the first time Coulter has had trouble at a university speech. In October 2004, two men ran onstage and threw custard pies as she was giving a speech at the University of Arizona.

UConn junior Kareem Mohni, 20, said he was disgusted by his peers’ reaction to Coulter. “It really appalled me that we’re not able to come together as a group and listen to a different view in a respectful environment,” Mohni said.

You’re Fired!

Actually, the exact words, as spoken to me by the Director of Applications Development, were “we are going to have to sever the relationship”. The reason given was “we just don’t think you’re a good fit”. It took them nearly a year to figure that out? After they bought up another company, laid off half the staff and hired several dozen Indian and Chinese H1B contract workers?

Yes, the Skipper is out of work. As of 3:00pm yesterday, I am gainfully unemployed. Even though I could see this coming several months ago, it is still a shock and will take a little getting used to. For the record, this company has been falling apart since mid-summer when decisions were made to hire several dozen more directors and managers and lay off most of the actual worker-bees. The manager who hired me last spring quit in disgust last month. Several more have quit for the same reasons.

I have tried to stick it out until after the holidays while I looked for other employment. Unfortunately, word leaked back to management that I was looking for other work and they decided to strike first. Two weeks before Christmas. You gotta love managers like that. These are the kind of incompetents who drove Enron off a cliff.

Anyway, enough of that. If anyone knows a good attorney in St. Louis who handles wrongful termination lawsuits, please send me some contact information. I already have several good job leads but with the Christmas season starting, it is going to be tough. It’ll be a “hard candy Christmas” as we used to call it when I was a child.

I’ll continue to try to keep you good folks entertained during this crisis as best I can but it may be a bumpy ride for the next few weeks as I foresee a lot of flights to other cities for interviews. And most importantly, don’t give me any “sympathy” crap. I don’t need it and you already know better. Everything that happens to us in life has a purpose. Who knows where this will lead me?

Stay tuned. The Skipper may be down but not out. Carry on.

Air Marshalls: 1, Possible Bombers: 0 - UPDATED

Breaking news from Miami.

CNN: Miami
Official: Passenger killed after claiming to have bomb

Federal air marshals shot and killed a man on a boarding bridge at Miami International Airport after he said he had a bomb, two sources familiar with the incident told CNN.

Flight 924 was in Miami on a stopover during a flight from Medellin, Colombia, to Orlando, Florida, when the man said there was a bomb in his carry-on luggage, a Department of Homeland Security official said.

He was confronted by a team of federal air marshals, who pursued the man down the boarding bridge and ordered him to get on the ground, the official said.

When the man appeared to reach into his baggage, at least one shot was fired by the marshals, wounding the man, the official said, adding that marshals’ actions were consistent with their training.

Upon investigation, there was no evidence that the man had a bomb, an official said.

*UPDATE*
According to CNN:

A passenger, Mary Gardner, told WTVJ in Miami that the man ran frantically down the aisle from the rear of the plane, arms flailing, and that the woman accompanying him said that Alpizar was bipolar and had not taken his medication, according to The Associated Press.

Officials could not confirm if the man suffered from mental illness.

After he got off the plane in Miami and went through customs, he got on the Orlando-bound plane and said he had a bomb, Air Marshal Service spokesman Dave Adams said.

Air marshals asked him to get off the plane, which he did, but when they asked him to put his bag down, he refused, Adams said. Alpizar then approached the marshals in an aggressive manner, at which point two or three shots were fired, he said.

Here’s a clue kids: when the marshalls tell you to do something, just do it.  Don’t go reaching into a bag.  Don’t argue.  Do not, under any circumstance, approach them in an aggressive manner.  These are sure-fire ways to contract sudden and severe lead poisoning with non-discript ventilation.

Stupid Criminal Award (for today)

Rape suspect programmed numbers into his phone
Orlando Sentinel Blog

Here’s an update from reporter Henry Pierson Curtis, from the meeting with investigators about the rape of two UCF students this weekend: The suspect, Evislandys Brito, was captured because investigators say he programmed his cell phone number into the cell phones of the women after he raped them—one early Sunday morning and the other later Sunday night in the same apartment complex of UCF students.

Invesitigators said he apparently acted as if the he and the women would get together again in some social way, so they had an undercover deputy call and pretend to be one of the victims. Brito arranged a meeting Monday back at the same apartment complex, where he was arrested, according to the sheriff’s office. Investigators are not saying exactly which apartment complex was the site of the rapes.

Democratic Party Deathwatch

There seems to be a pattern to the Democratic Party’s recent efforts to totally destroy itself. First, a leading Democrat jumps on President Bush or Republicans with insane allegations about one thing or another, then another leading Democrat or two tries to pile on but then sanity starts to creep back into their tiny little brains and all of a sudden the whole party is suddenly screaming “we were just kidding” and trying to sweep the whole thing under the rug. Does that just about sum it up or what? How much longer are the American people expected to endure this tragic comedy? I, for one, would really appreciate it if Dean, Kerry, Pelosi and a few others would just move to France and be done with it ...

Democrats Fear Backlash at Polls for Antiwar Remarks
(WASHINGTON POST)

Strong antiwar comments in recent days by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean have opened anew a party rift over Iraq, with some lawmakers warning that the leaders’ rhetorical blasts could harm efforts to win control of Congress next year.

Several Democrats joined President Bush yesterday in rebuking Dean’s declaration to a San Antonio radio station Monday that “the idea that we’re going to win the war in Iraq is an idea which is just plain wrong.”

The critics said that comment could reinforce popular perceptions that the party is weak on military matters and divert attention from the president’s growing political problems on the war and other issues. “Dean’s take on Iraq makes even less sense than the scream in Iowa: Both are uninformed and unhelpful,” said Rep. Jim Marshall (D-Ga.), recalling Dean’s famous election-night roar after stumbling in Iowa during his 2004 presidential bid.

Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Rahm Emanuel (Ill.) and Rep. Steny H. Hoyer (Md.), the second-ranking House Democratic leader, have told colleagues that Pelosi’s recent endorsement of a speedy withdrawal, combined with her claim that more than half of House Democrats support her position, could backfire on the party, congressional sources said.

These sources said the two leaders have expressed worry that Pelosi is playing into Bush’s hands by suggesting Democrats are the party of a quick pullout—an unpopular position in many of the most competitive House races.

“What I want Democrats to be discussing is what the president’s policies have led to,” Emanuel said. He added that once discussion turns to a formal timeline for troop withdrawals, “the how and when gets buried” and many voters take away only an impression that Democrats favor retreat.

Pelosi last week endorsed a plan by Rep. John P. Murtha (D-Pa.) to withdraw all U.S. troops in Iraq within six months, putting her at odds with most other Democratic leaders and leading foreign policy experts in her party.

Democrats, who have not controlled the White House since 2000 and the House in more than a decade, have tried over the past year to put aside deep philosophical differences and rally behind a two-pronged strategy to return to power: Highlight the growing number of GOP scandals and score Bush’s unpopular war management.

We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
