Late Breaking News

Yasser Arafat Is Still Dead!

Thousands Attend Arafat Memorial in Gaza
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP)

Several thousand people joined a rally of the ruling Fatah movement on Thursday to mark the first anniversary of the death of longtime Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. Leaders of all major Palestinian factions, including the militant group Hamas, sat on a stage at the ceremony under a big picture of the leader, who died on Nov. 11, 2004, at the age of 75.

Another large portrait showed Arafat alongside the current Palestinian leader, Mahmoud Abbas. Members of the audience chanted Arafat’s name and sung Fatah songs.

“We are going to continue in the struggle until we achieve the Palestinian state,” said Abdullah Franji, the top Fatah official in Gaza. “We will remain loyal to the path of Yasser Arafat and Yasser Arafat’s struggle and to Yasser Arafat’s legacy to national unity.”

Arafat, who led the Palestinians for 40 years, died in a French hospital. The cause of death remains unclear. A larger memorial ceremony is scheduled Saturday.

Open Season, No Bag Limit

The only catch is that no one has ever seen one of them in the four hundred years since the creature’s existence was first reported. That’s the Swedes for you though. Give me a crew of good ol’ boys from Alabama, a decent pick-em-up truck, several cases of beer and lots of ammo. We’ll have that sucker mounted on the wall at the local VFW Club by noon ....

imageimageHunting Season Opens for Mythical Creature
STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP)

A mythical monster, believed by some to have lived for hundreds of years in the murky depths of a Swedish lake, is now fair game for hunters—if they can find it. Authorities have agreed to lift its endangered species protection. Hundreds of people claim to have spotted a large serpent-like creature in Lake Storsjon in the northwestern province of Jamtland, and in 1986 the regional council put it on a list of endangered animals.

But a government watchdog challenged the decision, saying such protection was hardly necessary for a creature whose existence has not been proven. The regional council agreed to remove the listing this month, but declined to rule out that a monster lives in the 300-foot deep lake. “It exists, inasmuch as it lives in the minds of people,” the council’s chief legal adviser Peter Lif said about the purported beast. “But I guess we’ll have to agree that it cannot be proved scientifically, and then it should not be listed as an endangered species.”

The so-called Storsjo monster was first mentioned in print in 1635. Hundreds of sightings have been reported since then. Some people describe the creature as a snakelike animal with a dog’s head and fins on its neck. But no clear image of it has been captured on camera. Storsjo monster aficionados said lifting the endangered species protection was a mistake, and appeared insulted by the decision.

“We are not fanatics,” said Christer Berko, of the Storsjo monster association. “We see this as very interesting phenomenon that we unfortunately have not been able to document.”

Gunner Palace

I don’t usually give an extra plug to the advertisers in the right sidebar. Everyone here knows the drill: click ‘em when they interest you and buy stuff you like. Every time you click and buy stuff, I get money and this blog stays on the air. Today however, I got a last minute ad submitted to run for only two days during Veterans Day holiday time slot. The ad is at the top right for a new movie called “Gunner Palace” that was released this last summer (somehow I missed hearing about it). It’s now available on DVD. I was naturally intrigued by the lateness of the ad and just had to check out the content (I buy a lot of stuff from those ads myself - in fact, I’m currently reading Michael Crichton’s “State Of Fear” which I bought from one of the other ads - it’s a humdinger of a suspense novel that trashes the whole enviro-whacko movement - try it you’ll like it).

But I digress. I just clicked on the ad for the movie and took a look at the trailers for “Gunner Palace”. This is one I will have to see. If anyone beats me to it, I’d really appreciate your sending me a review of the movie. I’ll post it here. Meanwhile, go click on the ad and view the trailers. I think this is the war movie that we’ve all been waiting for. The DVD is available from Amazon ....

If It’s Thursday, Belgium Must Be Burning

Not satisfied to watch their cousins to the South burn, loot and riot their way across the media’s front pages, the MOOS-lim gangs in Belgium have started setting fire to Antwerp, Brussels and several smaller cities in what authorities are describing as “copy-cat” rampages. Denmark has already had problems too a few weeks ago. Fortunately the Danes cracked down hard. It will be interesting to see how far this recent asshat behavior spreads ...

Cars Set Ablaze In Belgium In New Copycat Attacks
BRUSSELS (Reuters)

Youths set fire to 15 vehicles across Belgium in a fourth night of attacks that authorities said looked like imitations of violence in France, leading to the far right to call for expulsion of the perpetrators. Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt told Reuters in Singapore the burning of cars in Belgian cities were “isolated incidents” and said they was not comparable to the riots in France, which he described as a “very serious, serious situation.”

The arson attacks late on Wednesday have not sparked worse violence across Belgium, which like France has big Muslim and African immigrant populations. “Burnt-out cars are rare in Belgium,” a spokesman for a government crisis center said on Thursday. “This seems to be an attempt to imitate what is happening in France.”

Ten cars were set ablaze in Brussels, with the others in Antwerp and the smaller towns of Lokeren, Mechelen and Ledeberg, the center said in a statement. There were a number of arrests. Brussels firefighters were called out 25 times to deal with attempted arson attacks, including three petrol bombs.

Belgium has a large immigrant population, many of Moroccan origin, with high unemployment among the young. But unlike France, it does not have a high concentration of immigrants in ghetto-like areas around major cities. The far-right Vlaams Belang party—which captured 25 percent of the vote during regional elections in the northern Flanders region last year—has called for the expulsion of the perpetrators should they turn out to be immigrants.

“(They) are no longer welcome in our country,” Filip Dewinter, a top party leader, said in a statement on his personal Web site. “In the case of foreigners, they need to be expelled. In the case of foreigners who hold the Belgian nationality, they need to be stripped of their nationality,” he said.

Belgian officials have tried to forestall violence by stepping up police patrols and increasing dialogue with migrant community leaders. Violence in French cities has decreased after the government revived emergency powers to curb two weeks of unrest. Verhofstadt, touring Asian cities to attract international investment to Belgium with corporate tax cuts, said there had been no European talks so far about the French unrest.

Evil Jew Tortures And Abuses Detainees

I’m sorry about that headline for this post but I couldn’t resist. Read on and you’ll see how this devloped. It all began with another of the looney flame e-mails which I get on a regular basis. This one came from one of our madhatter Arab readers in Bahrain (I traced the e-mail back to its source just to verify that this actually was someone whose towel was wrapped a little too tight). This gentle practitioner of the “Religion Of Peace” managed to refer to me as a “sick, insane mad-dog” no fewer than 14 times. He got my curiosity up though in one sentence which almost managed to approach readability in which he asked why I never “talked about the crimes committed by the evil Jews against his people” and he referred to “starving and dying in refugee camps where Jews tortured and abused” his people.

Well, one thing led to another and before you knew it I was navigating the pathways of Lexis-Nexis, Google, AltaVista and every search engine I could find. I finally found a news story that refers to a Jew who was convicted of criminal abuse and torture. Admittedly, the group he was torturing wasn’t Arabs but it was probably the closet thing to an Arab he could find. Ladies and gentlemen, we now present for your reading pleasure a tale of “Abuse Most Fowl” ....

NEW YORK (NEW YORK POST)
November 10, 2005

An Orthodox Jewish man was charged with animal cruelty yesterday for causing the drowning deaths of 35 chickens meant for slaughter in a religious ritual and keeping hundreds more in squalid conditions. Jacob Kalisch, 37, of Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg, was named in a complaint filed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals for mistreating 307 chickens found Oct. 16. They were crammed into wooden crates inside a vacant lot on Coney Island Avenue, sources said.

“Someone said, ‘You have to do something about these chickens. They’re dying.’ We reported it to the police and the ASPCA,” said PETA’s Martin Mersereau. ASPCA investigators seized the chickens, which were packed in crates eight to 10 high and partially covered by a tarp. About 35 were found to have drowned in a rainstorm, sources said.

Many of the chickens were covered in feces and later showed evidence of parasites, sources said. The chickens were supposed to be offered to Orthodox Jews who observe the kapparos ritual prior to Yom Kippur.  Observers of kapparos typically pay $25 to purchase a live chicken, which is then waved overhead by a rabbi in a ceremony that expiates a believer’s sins.

The chicken is then supposed to be quickly slaughtered by a kosher butcher and the meat given to a poor family. Kalisch allegedly told investigators his well-intentioned plans went awry when he was unable to find customers to take the birds off his hands. Authorities took the 270 confiscated chickens to the Catskill Animal Sanctuary in upstate Saugerties, said the facility’s director, Kathy Stevens.

“They were all grossly underweight. They were all dehydrated. A few of them were permanently paralyzed from being tightly packed into crates,” Stevens said.

Once they had shelter and food, “There was a chorus of chicken coos and chicken clucks that very night. They were so happy. They were running and playing and happy to be chickens for the first time in their lives,” she said.

Kalisch could not be reached for comment.

Now where else could you read about some ditzy broad making a statement like ”They were so happy. They were running and playing and happy to be chickens for the first time in their lives”? I’m telling, you, this story has something for everyone. Pass it along ...

Three Die Playing Catch With Grenade
BANJA LUKA, Bosnia (Reuters)

A hand grenade being used instead of a ball in a game of catch exploded early on Saturday killing three youths in this Bosnian town, police and news agencies said. Two youths aged 19 and 20, one of them from neighboring Croatia, were killed instantly while a 20-year-old woman died on her way to hospital, police said. Her sister was slightly injured but two other youths suffered serious injuries.

The blast occurred at 2:00 a.m. in the western town of Novi Grad at a place in the town center frequented by youngsters. Police said an inquiry was under way and declined further comment. It was not clear why the grenade exploded.

ONASA news agency quoted witnesses as saying the youths tossed the hand grenade to each other before it exploded in the hands of one of them. Bosnia is awash with illegal weapons left over from the 1992-95 war and tragic incidents are frequent despite several successful campaigns by international peacekeepers and police to get people to hand over illegal weapons.

Counterattack

Big Oil got in its licks at the Senate’s hearings yesterday as Chevron’s CEO cut loose on Congress with both barrels (at $65 per). Senators were surprised to learn that natural gas customers in Florida have their gas shipped across the Atlantic from Angola, which supposedly makes more sense than drilling into natural gas reserves off the coast of .... Florida. Huh?

Chevron CEO Attacks Energy Policy
WASHINGTON (Reuters)

U.S. energy policy’s focus on the environment and new fuel specifications historically has hurt efforts to increase the nation’s refining capacity, Chevron Corp.’s (CVX) chief executive said on Wednesday. “From a U.S. energy policy perspective, the focus has been on environmental and fuels investments, not on investments that add to production capacity,” Chevron CEO Dave O’Reilly said before a Senate hearing on energy prices.

O’Reilly also said U.S. energy policies had hurt the development of domestic energy resources. A maze of regulatory and administrative barriers at the federal level, for example, prevented Chevron from developing a natural gas field off the Florida coast, O’Reilly said.

As a result, consumers in Florida receive gas from Angola that is shipped across the Atlantic Ocean, he said.

“This is clearly not an efficient and economic use of resources for the United States, or the rest of the world for that matter,” O’Reilly said. “Yet it is the direct result of our historical energy policies.”

Al-Qaeda Takes Credit For Bombing

Guess who blew up the hotels in Jordan yesterday. No, it wasn’t an 80-year-old grandmother from Tallahassee. If that’s who you thought did it, then you probably work for US airport security. No, surprisingly enough the perps were .... (drumroll) .... Al-Qaeda. I’m shocked. Who would have thought that those nice young men (with unaddressed grievances) would do such a thing? We really need to try harder to understand their anger and help them become more in touch with their feelings so we can all learn to live together in peace and harmony and ....

CUT! HOLD IT! SOMEBODY GET THE SKIPPER HIS PILLS! HIS SARCASM GENERATOR JUST BLEW ALL THE FUSES!

There! I feel much better now. Where was I? Oh, yeah! These murderous b**tards need to be strung up by their cojones and left to dry in the sun. Let the vultures peck their livers out. Torture, maim and (slowly) kill them all. Then kill their families, burn their homes, raze it all to the ground and salt the land to make sure no more sprout up. Peace be unto you all.

imageimageAl-Qaida Claims Credit for Jordan Blasts
AMMAN, Jordan (AP)

Al-Qaida claimed responsibility in an Internet posting Thursday for three suicide attacks on Western hotels that killed at least 57 people, as police clamped down on security and began running DNA tests to try to identify the bombers. The nearly simultaneous attacks late Wednesday also wounded more than 115 people, police said. Several arrests were made overnight, although it was unclear if those arrested were suspects or witnesses.

The claim of responsibility, signed in the name of the spokesman for the group Al-Qaida in Iraq, said that “after studying and watching the targets, places were chosen to carry out an attack on some hotels that the tyrant of Jordan has made the backyard garden for the enemy of the religion—Jews and crusaders.” The authenticity of the posting could not be immediately determined, though it was made on a Web site frequently used by Al-Qaida operatives. Jordan’s King Abdullah II chaired a meeting with his security chiefs just hours after returning home from a trip abroad and inspecting the still-smoldering sites.

A security official said several people were rounded up overnight, but would not provide other details. He said authorities had tips on suspects who are being hunted down, including possible sleeper cells or individuals who may have assisted the attackers and later fled in a vehicle bearing Iraqi license plates. The official, insisting on anonymity because he is not allowed to speak to reporters, said that DNA tests were being carried out to determine the identity of the perpetrators, including two suicide bombers who blew themselves up in two of the separate hotel attacks. A third suicide attacker used a car to attack the third hotel.

The dead and wounded were mainly Jordanians, said Jordan’s Deputy Prime Minister Marwan Muahser. Other victims included three Chinese, all from China’s elite training university, who were visiting the kingdom and four Palestinians. Maj.-Gen. Bashir Nafeh, the head of military intelligence in the West Bank, and Col. Abed Allun, a high-ranking Preventive Security forces official, were killed in the attack at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, the Palestinian envoy to Amman, Ambassador Attala Kheri, told The Associated Press. Israel’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that an Israeli was killed in the bombings, but had no other details.

Frogs Deport Rioters

Sacre bleu! We have discovered a Fwenchman with testicles! Will miracles never cease? Interior Minister Sarkozy decides to throw the buggers out. At last report, Jacques Chirac was exploring the possibility of a sex-change operation. However, no donors have been found who are willing to supply the French President with a full set of male equipment ....

imageimageFrance To Deport Foreign Rioters
(BBC)

Interior minister Nicolas Sarkozy (pictured at left) has ordered the expulsion of all foreigners convicted of taking part in the riots that have swept France for 13 nights. He told parliament 120 foreigners had been found guilty of involvement and would be deported without delay.

Police said overnight violence had fallen significantly - although trouble still flared in more than 100 towns. The government has declared a state of emergency in Paris and more than 30 other areas to help quell the unrest.

The northern city of Amiens was the first to impose an overnight curfew under the new powers, which came into force at midnight. The western towns of Rouen, Le Havre and Evreux and the French Riviera region have also said they will implement the measures.

However the Seine-Saint-Denis region north-east of Paris, where the trouble started almost two weeks ago, said it would not impose a curfew after violence diminished for a third night running.

Mr Sarkozy told MPs that non-French nationals - “not all of whom are here illegally” - had been convicted of taking part in the attacks. “I have asked the prefects to deport them from our national territory without delay, including those who have a residency visa,” he said.

San Fran-Moonbats

image
Mike Lester, Rome News-Tribune, Rome, GA

Memo From The Skipper: Yes, I forgot to mention in the post below that, in addition to passing a law banning guns within the San Francisco city limits, the asshats in the city by the bay also passed a law “discouraging” military recruitment at schools at the same time. The whole story is here. Banning firearms is a violation of state law and banning recruiters is a violation of federal law. Unfortunately, the powers that be in San Fran-Moonbat, who put these two measures on the ballot, have never let illegality stop them in the past. In my humble opinion, the San Andreas Fault can’t break off soon enough.

NRA Sues San Francisco

It’s about time somebody stood up to the asshats in San Francisco. Thank (whatever deity you worship) the NRA is keeping an eye on the stoopid politicians (who mostly reside in Kalifornia). Join the NRA today. I’ve been a member for over 40 years. After you join, go out and celebrate by buying several really dangerous firearms, then sign up at a gun club nearby and learn how to use them properly. Stock up on ammo too because you never know. This is an Official Skipper Decree ....

NRA Sues to Overturn San Francisco Gun Ban
SAN FRANCISCO (AP)

The National Rifle Association sued Wednesday to overturn an ordinance voters here overwhelmingly approved a day earlier that bans handgun possession and sales of firearms in the city. A state appeals court in 1982 nullified a similar gun ban largely on grounds that the city cannot enact an ordinance that conflicts with state law, which allows for the sale and possession of handguns and ammunition.

The NRA filed its lawsuit Wednesday asking the same court, the 1st District Court of Appeal, to nullify the ordinance, which demands that city residents surrender their handguns by April. “Cities do not have the authority under the state law to ban the possession of handguns,” said Wayne LaPierre, NRA president.

The NRA also contends the new ordinance unfairly puts San Francisco residents at a disadvantage by denying them the means to protect themselves. The measure does not bar nonresidents from possessing handguns within city limits. City Attorney Dennis Herrera said his office will vigorously defend the ordinance, which was approved by 58 percent of voters.

“The electorate sent a strong message that local governments have a strong role in curbing violence in our streets,” Herrera said. He said the 1982 measure was overturned because it applied to all people within city limits, regardless of whether they lived there. Mayor Gavin Newsom has said the measure probably won’t withstand legal scrutiny, but has symbolic value. The NRA is not alleging the ordinance violates the Second Amendment right to bear arms, but it would in federal court if it loses the state case, LaPierre said.

Up Against The Wall!

Remember when the nationwide average price for gasoline was over $3.30 per gallon. Yeah, it was only a couple of months ago. Then Exxon recently announced they had made a profit of $10 billion in the last quarter (which is exactly what I had left after paying $67 for a tank of gas in September). Now, the fat cats are being hauled across the coals in the Senate. If you ask me, the fires aren’t hot enough. Hell comes to mind as the logical alternative ...

imageimageOil Company Execs
Defend Huge Profits

WASHINGTON (MYWAY NEWS)

The chiefs of five major oil companies defended the industry’s huge profits Wednesday at a Senate hearing where they were exhorted to explain prices and assure customers they’re not being gouged. There is a “growing suspicion that oil companies are taking unfair advantage,” Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., said, opening the hearing in a packed committee room.

“The oil companies owe the American people an explanation,” he declared. Lee Raymond, chairman of Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM), said he recognizes that high gasoline prices “have put a strain on Americans’ household budgets” but he defended his company’s huge profits, saying petroleum earnings “go up and down” from year to year.

ExxonMobil, the worlds’ largest publicly trade oil company, earned nearly $10 billion in the third quarter. Raymond was joined at the witness table by the chief executives of Chevron Corp. (CVX), ConocoPhillips, BPAmerica Inc., and Shell Oil Company. Together the companies earned more than $25 billion in profits in the July-September quarter as the price of crude oil hit $70 a barrel and gasoline surged to record levels after the disruptions of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Raymond said the profits are in line with other industries when earnings are compared to the industry’s enormous revenues. But senators pressed Raymond to explain why in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina some ExxonMobil gas station operators complained the company had raised the wholesale price of its gas by 24 cents a gallon in 24 hours. Is that not price gouging? they asked.

Raymond said he could not confirm the specific price increase, but that ExxonMobil had issued a directive in response to the storm disruptions “to minimize the increase in price while at the same time recognizing if we kept the price too low we would quickly run out (of fuel) at the service stations.”

“It was a tough balancing act,” said Raymond, who said it was not price gouging.

Most Ridiculous Item Of The Day (so far)

In keeping with the somewhat low standards we sometimes stoop to here, we present for your reading pleasure a story involving a professional football cheerleader, sex with another woman in a bathroom stall and ultimately a bar-room brawl and several arrests. A veritable cornucopia of sleaze to start your day. Don’t worry, though. The day is still young ....

imageimageWarrant Issued for
Ex-Panthers Cheerleader

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP)

A fugitive arrest warrant was issued for a Carolina Panthers cheerleader who allegedly gave a false name during her arrest at a bar where witnesses said she had sex with another cheerleader in a restroom stall.

Renee Thomas (pictured at left) was charged with giving a false name and causing harm to another, a third-degree felony punishable by probation or a jail term of up to five years, Tampa police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said Tuesday.

Thomas, 20, was released before police learned she had given them a driver’s license belonging to another Panthers cheerleader, who was not in Tampa. “She was bonded out on the false name she gave us,” McElroy said, adding that detectives are trying to determine how Thomas got the license.

McElroy said witness accounts that Thomas and fellow cheerleader Angela Keathley (pictured at right) were having sex with each other in a bathroom stall “led to the commotion, but they have nothing to do with the charges. The charge is that she (Thomas) punched someone in the face and then she chose to give police a fake ID,” she said.

Keathley was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Repeated attempts to reach the women were unsuccessful Tuesday. The cheerleaders were not in town to perform at the game, and the team said both were fired from the TopCats squad for violating a signed code that bans conduct embarrassing to the Panthers.
