Sports Update

Hey, if Sports Illustrated can have a swimsuit issue, then BMEWS is entitled to have a Women’s Curling Cheescake issue. As the article below states, it is “very tasteful”. Yep, yum-yum ....

imageimageWomen Of Curling Gain Greater Exposure
(CANADIAN PRESS)

Women’s curling is sure to receive a lot more exposure this year, thanks to a new international calendar that features nude and scantily clad female curlers. At left is Polish national team lead Kasia Selwand as seen in her photo from the new Curling calendar. The calendar is the brainchild of Ana Arce, a photographer who skipped the Andorran women’s team for three seasons before moving to Spain this year.

“I think it’s going to change the image of the sport which is not so nice,” Arce, who also poses in the calendar, told The Canadian Press. “I’ve been playing for eight years and there are so many beautiful girls playing and nobody knows it. “I doubt that anyone is going to be shocked and everybody’s going to enjoy that and like it.”

All proceeds will be split between the teams of the curlers who pose in the calendar, called the Ana Arce Team Sponsorship Calendar 2006. Arce contacted only women she knew personally through her years in curling, including two Canadians: Melanie Robillard of Ottawa and Lynsay Ryan of Kelowna, B.C., the daughter of two-time world champion skip and 2006 Olympic hopeful Pat Ryan.

Ryan, a 21-year-old student at Hamilton’s McMaster University, found herself in July posing in a see-through sarong in the forests of Fussen, Germany. “I sent him (her father) an e-mail,” Ryan said with a laugh. “I thought it might be better if he read about it and had time to think about it before he replied.”

Arce met Lynsay Ryan at a curling clinic in Germany and was surprised the Canadian agreed to be part of it. “I thought she was going to say no because being Canadian I know it’s more difficult,” she said. “I think things are different for European girls. “We are more open here — a little less shy I think. But she said yes and she just wanted to check the pictures and everything was okay.”

The 12 models represent curling teams from Denmark, Italy, Spain, England, Poland, Germany and Canada. “Some of the girls showed a little bit more, like breasts, because they wanted to,” Arce said of the black-and-white photos. “But it is very, very tasteful.”

The Pope’s Court?

A little-known fact about Judge Samuel Alito’s nomination is that it would definitely tilt the court in a .... Catholic direction? Yes, here is something more for Liberals to worry about. If Alito is confirmed, that would make five Catholics, two Protestants and two Jews on the high court.

In the Leftist mindset, this will not do! In the name of diversity, they will insist that President Bush nominate an atheist or a MOOS-lim! Perhaps even a Buddhist? A Mormon? A Quaker? A Scientologist? How about a member of a Satanic Cult? Gotta have minorities represented, right?

Pardon me. Whenever I try to think like a Leftist my mind starts to dissolve in laughter. How do they do it and keep a straight face ... ?

Catholics Could Get Majority on High Court
(MYWAY NEWS)

More than two centuries of Protestant domination on the Supreme Court will end if Samuel Alito is confirmed as its next justice. For the first time in the nation’s history, five Roman Catholics - a majority - would be on the high court. Yet news that the son of an Italian immigrant father, someone who grew up in a suburban New Jersey parish where he served as a lector and later married, doesn’t carry quite the power it might have in the days when Kennedys ran for the White House.

Catholics have become part of the nation’s political mainstream - far removed from the blatant anti-Catholic prejudice that once permeated American culture. They are as divided as other Americans on abortion and other social issues that will be a focus of Alito’s confirmation hearings - making an outpouring of religious pride for the conservative jurist less likely. “The Catholic community is not going out dancing in the streets of Boston tonight because of this nomination,” said James Davidson, a Purdue University sociologist who researches religion and Supreme Court justices. “But it still represents a significant development in American religious history.”

Protestants have been so dominant on the court that half of the justices have come from just three denominations: the Episcopal, Presbyterian and Congregational churches, he said. Only two Protestants would remain on the Supreme Court - David Souter and John Paul Stevens. The two other justices - Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer - are Jewish.

Analysts said Alito, as the fifth Catholic, was a less controversial religious choice than Harriet Miers, whose adult acceptance of born-again Christianity was dissected for clues about how she would vote on abortion. President Bush helped make religion a central issue in her failed nomination, saying it was a factor in selecting her for the high court.

David Leege, a professor emeritus at the University of Notre Dame and an expert on Catholics and politics, said the only activists likely to seize on Alito’s religion are abortion rights groups, who will try to link the judge’s position on abortion to Catholic teaching. Most others will focus on his ideology, Leege said. Senators are “less concerned whether the person is Catholic or Protestant than whether the person is conservative or liberal,” he said.

Trick Or … OH S**T!

Teenagers in America, take note: the next time you decide to toilet paper someone’s lawn on Halloween or set a flaming bag of s**t on someone’s porch, you can be thankful you don’t live in Italy. You see, over there the natives also have guns and some of them may look like senile old fools but bear in mind that they may just be packing heat and aren’t afraid to use it on young asshats. Lei capisce?

Italian Teens Shot While Trick-Or-Treating
IVREA, Italy (AP)

Two teenagers were hospitalized in serious condition after a man allegedly opened fire on them as they went door-to-door to collect candy on Halloween night, local police said Tuesday. Officials said a retiree apparently shot the 14-year-old boys, who were with a group of friends when they knocked on his door in the small town of Chiaverano in northern Italy.

Police in Ivrea said the youths were expected to survive. Paola Capozzi of the Ivrea police station said the 70-year-old man, Benito Dabbelani, had been arrested and charged with attempted murder. Police officers searched Dabbelani’s apartment and found that the weapon he used was registered. Capozzi said the group of teenagers had thrown firecrackers outside the man’s door, who then fired at them to scare them away.

“He didn’t realize he wounded them. He lives on his own and has been the victim of jokes in the past. Children made fun of him because he was isolated,” Capozzi said. “Of course, that doesn’t justify what happened.” Halloween has become increasingly popular in Italy, but going “trick-or-treating” is still not as widespread a practice as it is in the United States.

Perhaps they shouldn’t have gone to the door in Don Corleone outfits and said, “we’re here to make you an offer you can’t refuse”?

Media Labelling

Did you know that Judge Samuel Alito is “conservative”? If not, just turn on your TV. The mainstream media have used up every adjective in the dictionary to describe just how conservative Judge Alito is, from “very” conservative to “quite” conservative” and including “law and order” conservative. The Media Research Center has a full compilation of the labels being strewn around. You might say the MSM is being very liberal with the conservative label. Is anyone surprised ...?

Most Ridiculous Item Of The Day (so far)

Greenpeace has been fined $15,000 after its ship Rainbow Warrior ran aground and damaged a coral reef in the Philipines. They claim it was an accident and say they’re sorry. I say these people are a danger to the environment and need to have their ship taken away. This is “reefer madness”.  Let’s snatch their dinghy ...

Tubbataha Reefs, Philippines (NEWS.COM.AU)

GREENPEACE is to be fined after its flagship Rainbow Warrior II damaged a coral reef in the central Philippines during a climate change awareness campaign. The ship and its crew were assessed a 640,000-peso ($15,000) fine after the 55m motor-assisted schooner ran aground at the Tubbataha Reef Marine Park yesterday, park manager Angelique Songco said.

The ship’s bow sliced through a reef formation measuring 160sq m, she said. A Greenpeace official in the Philippines described the incident as accidental, and said it would comply with the marine park authorities’ ruling.

Rainbow Warrior II arrived in the reservation in the middle of the Sulu Sea, about 600km south of Manila, last weekend as part of a four-month Asia-Pacific campaign to promote earth-friendly energy sources, Greenpeace campaign manager Red Constantino said.

He said the crew made dive sorties to inspect the effect of global warming on the coral formation, which is listed among the World Heritage sites of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.

The chart indicated we were a mile and a half” from the coral reef when the ship ran aground, Mr Constantino said. He said the August 2005 navigational map was provided by the mapping office of the Philippine Government.

The ship’s own rubber boats safely towed it into deeper water, and it escaped serious damage. Mr Constantino said the ship was now heading back to the Puerto Princesa on the western island of Palawan to file an incident report with the marine park office.

Guess Who’s Talking?

Here’s what the Left is saying after Judge Alito’s nomination yesterday, culled from various sources around the web ....

“If confirmed, Alito could very well fundamentally alter the balance of the court and push it dangerously to the right.”
-- Sen. Edward M. Kennedy(D-MA), after the announcement of Judge Alito’s nomination yesterday.

“You have obviously had a very distinguished record, and I certainly commend you for long service in the public interest. I think it is a very commendable career, and I am sure you will have a successful one as a judge.”
-- Sen. Edward M. Kennedy(D-MA), in 1990 after voting to confirm Judge Alito to the 3rd Circuit Court

“It is sad that the president felt he had to pick a nominee likely to divide America instead of choosing a nominee in the mold of Sandra Day O’Connor, who would unify us. This controversial nominee, who would make the court less diverse and far more conservative, will get very careful scrutiny from the Senate and from the American people.”
-- Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY)

“Judge Alito’s record on the bench demonstrates that he would go to great lengths to restrict the authority of Congress to enact legislation to protect civil rights and the rights of workers, consumers and women.”
-- Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT)

“Judge Alito is too radical for the American people. President Bush would leave the Supreme Court looking less like America and more like an old boys club.”
-- Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV)

“Now the gauntlet has been, I think, thrown down. This nomination is aimed at appeasing the most right-wing elements of the president’s political base.”
-- Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA)

“Alito’s record suggests an activist judicial philosophy bent on rolling back the rights and freedoms that all Americans value. Alito has sought to limit the rights of women and people with disabilities in discrimination cases, demonstrated an open hostility to women’s privacy rights even in basic reproductive health matters, has a record of hostility toward immigrants, and tried to immunize employers from employment discrimination cases. It is particularly troubling that President Bush would nominate a judge who would reverse American progress and make the Supreme Court look less like America on the same day that most Americans are honoring the life and legacy of Rosa Parks.”
-- Howard Dean (DNC Chairman)

“The nomination of Samuel Alito poses a grave threat to the protections Americans count on, including basic workers’ rights, women’s rights, and civil rights. We call on the Senate to stand up for all of us and reject the nomination of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court of the United States.”
-- MoveOn.org web site petition

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
