Danish Dilemna

Clash of civilizations: twenty-first century Europeans versus tenth century Muslims. There is too big a gap there and something’s gotta give sooner or later. Now the Muslims are declariing jihad over a few stupid cartoons? Get real, folks! This is childish at best. Dangerous at the other extreme. Do the Danes censor the press and deny freedom of speech to its citizens or do they tell the Arabs to go pound sand? Regardless, the cartoonists have started receiving death threats and the newspapers have had to hire bodyguards for staff. We report, you decide ...

imageimageGrowing Islamic Anger Over Mohammed Cartoons
(CNSNews.com)

For the government of one small European nation, the new year begins with a deepening crisis: growing anger in the Islamic world over a newspaper’s decision to publish cartoon depictions of the prophet Mohammed. The Danish daily newspaper Jyllands-Posten last fall published 12 caricatures of Mohammed, causing an uproar that continues to build more than three months later. Muslims consider any images of the prophet who founded Islam in the seventh century to be blasphemous.

The published cartoons showed “Mohammed” in various settings. One depicts him wearing a turban shaped like a bomb with its fuse lit, while another has him with eyes blacked out and carrying a large, curved knife, flanked by two women in top-to-toe burqas. In another, the prophet is shown telling a line of suicide bombers seeking entry to paradise: “Stop, stop, we have run out of virgins.”

The Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), representing 57 Muslim states and territories, issued a memorandum on January 1 accusing the Danish government of “indifference” after Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen declined to intervene in the dispute. Rasmussen called it a matter of freedom of speech, echoing the reasoning of the newspaper at the center of the row. Jyllands-Posten had said it wanted to test the limits of free speech at a time it was under threat because of the influence of radical Islam.

The OIC dismissed the free speech argument, saying in its statement this week that the publication of the cartoons “was meant to disturb and infuriate Muslims, and could not be considered as an innocent behavior falling within the scope of freedom of expression in which everyone believes.” Claiming that the publication “has offended hundreds of millions of Muslims around the world,” the organization announced that the governments and cultural organizations in all OIC member states had been asked to boycott a forthcoming cultural project on the Middle East, partly funded by the Danish government.

Last week, foreign ministers of the Arab League mandated the 22-nation bloc’s secretary-general, Amr Moussa, to take up the issue directly with the Danish government. In a declaration, they voiced “surprise and indignation over the Danish government’s reaction, which was disappointing, despite the political, economic, and cultural bonds with the Muslim world.”

Not only did Rasmussen refuse to take up the matter with the newspaper, he also declined to meet with a delegation of ambassadors from 11 Muslim nations who wanted to discuss the “tone” of the debate over Islam in Denmark. “As prime minister I have no tool whatsoever to take actions against the media, and I don’t want that kind of tool,” he said at the time.

The growing pressure - the U.N. and European Union have also waded in, while a group of former Danish ambassadors said the premier was wrong to refuse to meet with the Muslim envoys - appears to have left the government cold. “Now it is important to stand our ground and say that we have a separation of powers in Denmark and something called freedom of expression,” the Copenhagen Post quoted the ruling party’s foreign affairs spokesman Troels Lund as saying in response to the Arab League complaints.

Quiet Aussie Christmas

I missed the story about the riots in Australia in recent weeks and am just now getting caught up. At least the Aussie police are having a fun time down under. It seems things have finally settled down and everyone is getting along just fine, right? I’ll wait and see before I pass judgement. I don’t think Muslims are really trying to fit in anywhere they go in the world. I might believe their cries of racism if it occurred in just one country. Or maybe two. But this is a pattern that has been repeated from Detroit to Paris to Berlin to Madrid to Sydney to ... everywhere. There’s a pattern alright and I don’t particularly like it. I do however like a country where you can celebrate Christmas and go watch bikinis on the beach all in the same day ...

imageimagePolice Make Merry in Race Riot’s Aftermath
SYDNEY (Reuters)

Australian police patrolled Sydney’s beaches in buggies and on horses decorated with tinsel and reindeer antlers Sunday, as fears of fresh racial violence dissolved into a quiet Christmas Day. On Cronulla beach, where gangs of white surfers and ethnic Lebanese clashed in alcohol-fuelled riots two weeks ago, families spread out across the sand and children ran into the sea—all under the watchful eye of dozens of armed, uniformed police.

Policewomen kept watch from two tinsel-trimmed mounts, horses named Hero and Hollywood, which plodded along the sand wearing fake antlers, while other police officers climbed life-guard towers or scooted along the beach in four-wheeled buggies. “I think everybody has realized that violence is not the answer to all our problems,” said Phil Wardman, sitting with his family on Cronulla’s powdery sand, beneath a postcard-blue sky.

“I wanted to come down today to show I’m not afraid to come here.” Australia is trying hard to mend its image after the riots, which evoked old racist stereotypes and prompted police to throw a security cordon around Sydney’s most popular beaches to head off threats of more violence from white supremacists. Only a week ago, police made dozens of arrests and seized a frightening array of crude weapons, including petrol bombs, knuckle-dusters and wooden clubs studded with nails, from cars stopped and searched at seaside road-blocks.

World publicity of the riots and the police crackdown had sparked fears of a drop in tourism to Australia this summer, but Sydney’s beaches appeared to have returned to near normal Sunday despite the heavy police presence. Hundreds of British and European backpackers and thousands of other sun-worshippers made their annual Christmas Day pilgrimage to Sydney’s most famous summer playground, Bondi Beach, while police patrolled its esplanade in cars and on foot.

No Pig Down Under

First the Muzzies on Australia’s east coast stirred things up with recent riots and now the west coast is getting a dose. Needless to day, the Aussies aren’t too happy with the Muzzies at this point, particularly when it means some of them won’t be able to have a traditional Christmas meal. Allow me to make an interesting point here. The Jews also have prohibitions against eating pork and they have lived among Western civilizations for thousands of years yet the Jews, to my knowledge, have never tried to make the rest of us follow their beliefs. What does that say about intolerance and Muslims ... ?

imageimage No Ham For Christmas:
Muslim Menu For WA Hospital

(AUSTRALIA SUNDAY TIMES)

A Western Australia hospital has scrubbed baked ham from its Christmas menu, fearing Muslim patients could be offended. It has also overhauled its entire menu so that all meals are now halal – containing only meat and other food prepared according to Muslim customs. But Port Hedland Regional Hospital staff and many non-Muslim patients are outraged, saying it is a case of political correctness gone mad.

Kitchen staff are so angry that they have organised a petition demanding ham be put back on the Christmas menu. Other WA hospitals are also introducing halal dining, though the Health Department says Port Hedland is the only one to convert its entire menu to suit Muslims. Hospital directors decided to axe the traditional festive season baked ham because of the high percentage of Muslim patients.

Eating pork or ham is forbidden under Muslim custom. Until now, Muslims were asked to supply their own food if they did not want to eat hospital fare. The hospital’s nursing director, Judy Davis, said though ham was not on the menu, Christian patients would not miss out on festive cheer. “We’ll still make Christmas special – we’ve got prawns and all sorts of other special treats,” she said.

But one long-time Port Hedland hospital worker told The Sunday Times the menu change was “unAustralian”. “It’s going to be a boring old Christmas lunch for the patients,” he said. “After all, what’s Christmas without a ham, or Sunday morning without bacon and eggs?

“The management of the hospital are unable to stand up to a minority and keep our Australian way of life intact. They are bowing to the pressure of a select few.” He warned that the only politically correct fare would soon be “a bowl of rice and a cup of tea”. “No wonder the true-blue Australians are getting angry,” he said. “Now all we need is for someone of the Hindu faith to jump up and down and we’ll have no beef. “Before we know it, if you’re sick in Port Hedland, you will have to be happy with a diet of boiled rice and a cup of tea.”

All Quiet On The Down-Under Front

What if they gave a beach party and no one came? Police in Australia found out today. Two thousand police were on hand in case more riots and fighting broke out between Aussies and Muzzies. However, only 2,000 beachgoers actually showed up, about 10% of the normal Saturday crowd. Interestingly, police have been apprehending rioters with swords and daggers - which is what you get when the government outlaws firearms ... “there can be only one, MacLeod!” ...

imageimage2000 Police But The Beaches Were Empty
December 18, 2005
(SYDNEY MORNING-HERALD)

Sydney’s beaches were strangely empty yesterday - testament to a week of race-based violence and threats, and tough no-nonsense warnings from police and politicians to stay away. At Bondi Beach, lifeguards reported only 2000 beachgoers by lunchtime, down from the usual 20,000 expected for a Saturday. Last night numbers of revellers at the beach’s strip of restaurants and bars were down more than half.

At North Cronulla John Griggs, who owns the Blue Parrot restaurant, said he had experienced a 70 per cent drop in sales and lost about $10,000 because diners were staying away. At Maroubra Beach, numbers were down from 15,000 to only 500 as mounted police and uniformed officers patrolled the sands. A similar-sized drop was reported at Coogee Beach, the scene of last week’s retaliatory “smash and bash” attacks.

More than 2000 police were out on the streets and beaches, using tough new laws passed by the NSW Parliament last week to crack down on troublemakers. Roadblocks were established at Cronulla, Maroubra, Coogee and Bondi. Thirty police were stationed along The Grand Parade, at Brighton-le-Sands. “We are stationed, two cops to each car, along this road,” one officer said.

“We are checking the cars out for any weapons - knives, bats, golf clubs - and just making sure that everything is above board.” Four all-terrain quad bikes have been purchased to enhance Operation Seta, the strike force set up last week to tackle the violence. On Friday night, police arrested 19 people as part of the operation.

They seized a vehicle at Matraville, in Sydney’s south-east, and inside found swords and a dagger. The driver, a 17-year-old youth from Castle Hill, was charged with possessing an offensive implement and possessing offensive weapons and was granted conditional bail to appear at Bidura Children’s Court in February. In another incident, police charged two men after an alleged assault with golf clubs at Jannali early yesterday.

Aussie Update

In order to get a grip on the recent rioting, the government of New South Wales has passed new laws that make the Patriot Act look like nothing more than simple guidelines. Police in Sydney can now impound vehicles and cell phones without warrants, they can close down shops, lock down sections of the city and declare alcohol-free zones. In addition, penalties for rioting have been increased from ten years to fifteen years in prison.

Here is a link to what Australians are saying about the new laws, as seen on the Australian newspaper The Age’s reader comment section. Here are a few comments posted there to give you a taste of how Aussies feel about the new laws and the Middle Eastern immigrants who started it all ...

If I’m walking down a street and get bashed by a gang wielding bats and bars I’m not going to give a tuppenny stuff about their cultural background or whether they feel marginalised. Do you think I should?

Should I, as they swing the bats down on me, feel sorry for them and empathise? Should I accept responsibility for not being more welcoming when their parents came to this country? Do you think they’ll want to talk to me about it?

Thugs are thugs. They’re not activists. They have no political justification for the way they act. They are criminals and should be treated as such. Shoot the morons down and send the parents the bill. I’m sick of it all.

Bring back old fashioned policing - AND - restore a bit of structure back into society instead of the PC bulls*** mess we have now. Sod the Politically Correct crowd - the cops could give the local thugs the occasional hiding to keep them in line, as dead heads only understand that type of reasoning.

Society must take a lot of the blame too - doesnt matter WHO is playing up, members of the community should be able to pull up the hoons and slap them and keep them in line.

As to the Politically Correct morons - your mates who seem to permiate all levels of society that are decision makers - I hope you are happy now - look around you and see the fruits of your labour(pun)- or should I say - communism....

I for one will be making sure my community starts policing itself. The buck stops with each one of us -so tell the PC mob to get stuffed and take back control of our lives.

We have had enough.

‘I am sick of all the namby-bamby liberals harking about freedom and liberty when the most productive and orderly societies are the ones with strict military discipline. ‘

What a load. Last time I looked, neither the US, the UK, most of Western Europe and Australia managed to be first-world, creative, productive nations without ‘strict military discipline’. I can’t understand how people such as Uncle Joe can criticise the Left on one hand for their nanny-statism, and in the same breath whine that the state isn’t being paternalistic enough. Just go and live in Singapore. We’ll stay here and enjoy our hard-earned freedom.

Australian Riots: Update

For those of you who watch American football, you may be familiar with what I am about to say. In football, when two players get into a fight during play it is always the last one who throws a punch that gets penalized. That is because the last punch is the only one the referees ever see. The same is true with the recent riots in Sydney.

The media is covered with pictures of white youth fighting with police and almost every aritcle concentrates on the attacks by “white gangs” on peaceful Middle Eastern youth. These “white gangs” are being called “white supremacists” and even “neo-nazis”. That is because the media saw only the last punch thrown. Five yard penalty and loss of down.

As usual, the truth is a little more complex than that. Read the first four articles below to see how the mainstream media are portraying this as a racist attack by white youth against peaceful Middle Eastern youth. Then .... read the fifth article below. It is a long piece but is well worth the time invested in reading it. A retired Sydney police detective gives the background in full detail and predicts a backlash to come .... in a speech given two years ago.

Beware The Ides Of March

Things are about to get real strange over in raghead-land. The mad mullahs in Iran have never stopped their attempts to destroy Israel by funding Hezbollah, Hamas and other suicide bomber groups. They have been quietly building nuclear plants all over the countryside and refusing to cooperate with the IAEA on inspections. They have been stalling negototiations with Europe and the UN and recently “elected” a President who is a complete whacko.

These fascist madmen are intent on acquiring nukes and there is no doubt what they will do with them. Israel finds itself staring down the barrel of a large atomic gun and the Jews don’t like it one bit. I can’t say as I blame them really. This is all about to get radically out of hand in March when the IAEA presents its next report to the UN. Israel is already getting prepared to protect itself once again. Who knows what will come of this? All I know is there will be a lot of dead people and several cities in Iran will not be habitable by humans for a long time ...

imageimageIsrael Readies Forces For Strike On Nuclear Iran
TEL AVIV (LONDON TIMES)

Israel’s armed forces have been ordered by Ariel Sharon, the prime minister, to be ready by the end of March for possible strikes on secret uranium enrichment sites in Iran, military sources have revealed. The order came after Israeli intelligence warned the government that Iran was operating enrichment facilities, believed to be small and concealed in civilian locations.

Iran’s stand-off with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) over nuclear inspections and aggressive rhetoric from Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, who said last week that Israel should be moved to Europe, are causing mounting concern. The crisis is set to come to a head in early March, when Mohamed El-Baradei, the head of the IAEA, will present his next report on Iran. El-Baradei, who received the Nobel peace prize yesterday, warned that the world was “losing patience” with Iran.

A senior White House source said the threat of a nuclear Iran was moving to the top of the international agenda and the issue now was: “What next?” That question would have to be answered in the next few months, he said. Defence sources in Israel believe the end of March to be the “point of no return” after which Iran will have the technical expertise to enrich uranium in sufficient quantities to build a nuclear warhead in two to four years.

“Israel — and not only Israel — cannot accept a nuclear Iran,” Sharon warned recently. “We have the ability to deal with this and we’re making all the necessary preparations to be ready for such a situation.” The order to prepare for a possible attack went through the Israeli defence ministry to the chief of staff. Sources inside special forces command confirmed that “G” readiness — the highest stage — for an operation was announced last week.

Gholamreza Aghazadeah, head of the Atomic Organisation of Iran, warned yesterday that his country would produce nuclear fuel. “There is no doubt that we have to carry out uranium enrichment,” he said. He promised it would not be done during forthcoming talks with European negotiators. But although Iran insists it wants only nuclear energy, Israeli intelligence has concluded it is deceiving the world and has no intention of giving up what it believes is its right to develop nuclear weapons.

A “massive” Israeli intelligence operation has been underway since Iran was designated the “top priority for 2005”, according to security sources. Cross-border operations and signal intelligence from a base established by the Israelis in northern Iraq are said to have identified a number of Iranian uranium enrichment sites unknown to the the IAEA.

Australians Mob Arabs

It looks like the kettle is starting to boil over much sooner than anyone expected. It is already happening in Australia and may spread even further before this is over with. I’m talking about a backlash against Arab-looking people. Yes, it is racial profiling and it is very wrong. Or is it? Here we are in the 21st century with Muslims running around all over the world setting fire to entire countries, blowing up buildings and people, hijacking airliners and killing Westerners at every opportunity.

Are all Muslims or Arab-looking people to blame? No, of course not but to many around the world it is starting to look like a clash of civilizations and tempers are flaring everywhere. I hate to say it but this may just be a precursor of things to come. It may get much worse unless cooler heads prevail ... on both sides. Unless the Arab countries in the Middle East and Southeast Asia start to really crack down on their radicals and the Imams start preaching against violence it will only get worse. Much worse, I’m afraid ...

imageimageBeach Erupts Into Violence
December 11, 2005
CRONULLA BEACH, NSW Australia (AAP)

Angry crowds have singled out and bashed people of Middle Eastern appearance at Sydney’s Cronulla beach as racial tension erupted into violence. And an ambulance called to the scene to treat five people injured in today’s violence has been attacked by a mob who shattered its windows. Meanwhile, police have been pelted with beer bottles, and their patrol cars stomped on, as the outnumbered officers struggled to maintain control.

Witnesses saw officers using capsicum spray in a bid to quell those perpetrating the violence. NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Goodwin said police were forcing their way through the crowd, trying to prevent further attacks. He said a number of people had been assaulted but could not say exactly how many. However, an ambulance spokesman said at least five people had been injured.

It was those people the ambulance was trying to reach when it was attacked. “An ambulance attempting to transport five injured people from the scene was set upon by a large group of people who smashed its windows,” an ambulance spokesman said. Mr Goodwin said today’s violence was disgusting. “What has been occurring on some fronts is that people of Middle Eastern backgrounds that have been seen in the Cronulla area – a swarm of the crowd has approached these people with vile abuse, in the most un-Australian way,” Mr Goodwin said.

“We have a number of reports of persons that have been assaulted.” He said the bulk of the crowd had behaved but pockets of violence had broken out. “… we have sections of the crowd that have swollen towards young Arabic males and females, who have been using this beach.” Three people have been arrested so far, with more arrests expected.

Earlier today, police rushed to Cronulla train station where a mob ran there from the foreshore after receiving a text message saying a group of Lebanese people were trying to leave. Mr Goodwin said the text message was wrong, but sparked a scuffle at the station between the crowd and police.

Leaks In The Dike

Several things jumped out at me while reading the story below. First, the murderer of Theo van Gogh is finally coming to trial. Second, the court is being held in a damned “bunker” to protect the judges and lawyers. Third, the most these Islamic criminals can get is 15 years in jail.

Is all that enough to convince you that Europe is running scared from Islamic immigrants who murder and pillage as they destroy Western civilization on the continent? In my opinion, Europe is a lost cause. The Dutch may as well go ahead and order a large stock of white flags from France so they can surrender along with the frogs to the new Fascists.

Everywhere over there they are caving in to the Islamic criminals and hiding from the hungry hordes flooding in from the Middle East. It isn’t over yet for the Euro-Peons but the end is in sight unless somebody over there grows a pair real fast. Here’s a tip for Europe: it’s 1939 all over again, the Fascist murderers are already over-running Europe and appeasement is not the answer. Hello! Is anyone listening ... ?

imageimageDutch Put Terror Group On Trial
AMSTERDAM (BBC)

Fourteen men are standing trial in the Netherlands charged with belonging to a radical Islamist terror network. Among the accused is Mohammed Bouyeri (pictured at left), already jailed for life for the murder of film-maker Theo van Gogh last year. The trial, the first to come to court under new anti-terror legislation, is being seen as a test case.

The suspects are alleged to be members of the so-called Hofstad group, based in The Hague. Two are also charged with trying to kill police with a grenade. Another of the men is accused of weapons offences after being arrested in Amsterdam last year with a loaded gun.

A court ruled in November that 27-year-old Bouyeri could stand trial a second time despite being given a life sentence in July. He confessed to killing Van Gogh - a critic of radical Islam - out of religious conviction. Bouyeri is alleged to have played a key role in the Hofstad network, hosting meetings of the group in his Amsterdam home and spreading radical texts. Prosecutors are using new anti-terror laws, brought in last year, which introduced a charge of “membership of a criminal organisation with terrorist intent”.

If found guilty, the men face jail sentences of up to 15 years. The BBC’s Geraldine Coughlan in The Hague says the new legislation may help prosecutors, who have suffered setbacks in recent terror trials. There is now more scope for them to build terrorist, rather than criminal, charges and for the defence to challenge evidence from the intelligence services, our correspondent says.

The trial, which starts on Monday morning in a high-security court in Amsterdam known as “the bunker”, is expected to last at least two months. Dutch teenager Samir Azzouz was cleared earlier this year of plotting attacks on Amsterdam airport, government buildings and a nuclear reactor after a court ruled there was no direct evidence.

Muslims Burning Christian Churchs After Gambling Loss

Yes, you read that post title correctly. Muslims in Pakistan are burning down Christian churchs again. Oddly enough, Associated Press’s headline for the article doesn’t mention that it was a Christian church. You have to read on into the news article to find that out. You also have to read on into it to find out the real cause of the burning, which had nothing to do with religion. It started with a few Muslims who lost money gambling with a Christian. Did I mention that gambling is forbidden to Muslims, according to the Koran .... ?

“O believers! Intoxicants and gambling, worshipping stones and divination by arrows are impure, of shaytan’s handiwork: refrain from such abomination that ye may prosper. ” (Qur’aan 5:90)

I wonder where in the Koran (Qur’aan?) it says that if you do gamble, then you must immediatlely make up a story about the man you lost money to and go burn his church to make up for your sin? If anyone knows where that section is in the Muslim holy book, please forward a reference to me ...

imageimageMuslim Crowd Burns Two Pakistan Churches
LAHORE , Pakistan (AP)

Hundreds of Muslims attacked and burned two churches in Pakistan on Saturday after reports that a Christian man had desecrated Islam’s holy book. No one was injured in the blazes. A school, student hostel and the home of a priest were also torched by the crowd of about 1,500 Muslims near the town of Sangla Hill, about 80 miles northeast of Lahore, said police official Ali Asghar Dogar.

The attacks were being investigated. About two dozen people had been arrested, Dogar said. The fires came a day after a local Muslim resident accused a Christian of burning a one-room Islamic school along with copies of the Quran. Dogar said the allegations were apparently leveled by people who lost money while gambling with the Christian man on Friday, but police had detained him and were investigating.

Shahbaz Bhatti, head of the All Pakistan Minorities Alliance—which promotes the rights of minorities in mainly Muslim Pakistan, denied the charges and condemned the attacks on the Roman Catholic and Protestant churches. “No Christian burned copies of the Quran,” he told The Associated Press. “No Christian even can think of doing it. We have maximum regard and respect for the Quran and Islam’s Prophet Muhammad.”

Bhatti accused local Muslim leaders of using mosque public-address systems to urge Muslims to attack the churches. Non-Muslims comprise just 3 percent of Pakistan’s 150 million-plus population. The country’s Christian minority generally coexists peacefully with the Muslim majority, but there have been occasional attacks on churches and Christian clergy by Islamic extremists railing against Western influence in Pakistan.

Thousands of Pakistanis joined angry street protests this spring over the alleged desecration of the Quran by interrogators at a U.S. military prison in Guantanamo, Bay, Cuba. Desecration of the holy book carries the death penalty in Pakistan.

If It’s Thursday, Belgium Must Be Burning

Not satisfied to watch their cousins to the South burn, loot and riot their way across the media’s front pages, the MOOS-lim gangs in Belgium have started setting fire to Antwerp, Brussels and several smaller cities in what authorities are describing as “copy-cat” rampages. Denmark has already had problems too a few weeks ago. Fortunately the Danes cracked down hard. It will be interesting to see how far this recent asshat behavior spreads ...

Cars Set Ablaze In Belgium In New Copycat Attacks
BRUSSELS (Reuters)

Youths set fire to 15 vehicles across Belgium in a fourth night of attacks that authorities said looked like imitations of violence in France, leading to the far right to call for expulsion of the perpetrators. Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt told Reuters in Singapore the burning of cars in Belgian cities were “isolated incidents” and said they was not comparable to the riots in France, which he described as a “very serious, serious situation.”

The arson attacks late on Wednesday have not sparked worse violence across Belgium, which like France has big Muslim and African immigrant populations. “Burnt-out cars are rare in Belgium,” a spokesman for a government crisis center said on Thursday. “This seems to be an attempt to imitate what is happening in France.”

Ten cars were set ablaze in Brussels, with the others in Antwerp and the smaller towns of Lokeren, Mechelen and Ledeberg, the center said in a statement. There were a number of arrests. Brussels firefighters were called out 25 times to deal with attempted arson attacks, including three petrol bombs.

Belgium has a large immigrant population, many of Moroccan origin, with high unemployment among the young. But unlike France, it does not have a high concentration of immigrants in ghetto-like areas around major cities. The far-right Vlaams Belang party—which captured 25 percent of the vote during regional elections in the northern Flanders region last year—has called for the expulsion of the perpetrators should they turn out to be immigrants.

“(They) are no longer welcome in our country,” Filip Dewinter, a top party leader, said in a statement on his personal Web site. “In the case of foreigners, they need to be expelled. In the case of foreigners who hold the Belgian nationality, they need to be stripped of their nationality,” he said.

Belgian officials have tried to forestall violence by stepping up police patrols and increasing dialogue with migrant community leaders. Violence in French cities has decreased after the government revived emergency powers to curb two weeks of unrest. Verhofstadt, touring Asian cities to attract international investment to Belgium with corporate tax cuts, said there had been no European talks so far about the French unrest.

WAPO Apologizes For French Muslims

The Washington Post thinks the MOOS-lim rioters who are burning Paris to the ground are simply misunderstood youth who are perfectly within their rights to get the attention of the government in this manner. Here is your “Liberal Moment” of the day ....

Spreading Rampage in Country’s Slums Is Rooted in Alienation and Abiding Government Neglect
(WASHINGTON POST)

Mohammed Rezzoug, caretaker of the municipal gymnasium and soccer field, knows far more about the youths hurling firebombs and torching cars on the streets of this Paris suburb than do the police officers and French intelligence agents struggling to nail the culprits. He can identify most of the perpetrators. So can almost everyone else in the neighborhoods that have been attacked.

“They’re my kids,” said Rezzoug, a garrulous 45-year-old with thinning black hair and skin the color of a walnut. While French politicians say the violence now circling and even entering the capital of France and spreading to towns across the country is the work of organized criminal gangs, the residents of Le Blanc-Mesnil know better. Many of the rioters grew up playing soccer on Rezzoug’s field. They are the children of baggage handlers at nearby Charles de Gaulle International Airport and cleaners at the local schools.

“It’s not a political revolution or a Muslim revolution,” said Rezzoug. “There’s a lot of rage. Through this burning, they’re saying, ‘I exist, I’m here.’ “ Such a dramatic demand for recognition underscores the chasm between the fastest growing segment of France’s population and the staid political hierarchy that has been inept at responding to societal shifts. The youths rampaging through France’s poorest neighborhoods are the French-born children of African and Arab immigrants, the most neglected of the country’s citizens. A large percentage are members of the Muslim community that accounts for about 10 percent of France’s 60 million people.

One of Rezzoug’s “kids”—the countless youths who use the sports facilities he oversees—is a husky, French-born 18-year-old whose parents moved here from Ivory Coast. At 3 p.m. on Saturday, he’d just awakened and ventured back onto the streets after a night of setting cars ablaze. “We want to change the government,” he said, a black baseball cap pulled low over large, chocolate-brown eyes and an ebony face. “There’s no way of getting their attention. The only way to communicate is by burning.”

Like other youths interviewed about their involvement in the violence of the last 10 days, he spoke on the condition he not be identified for fear the police would arrest him. But he and others described the nightly rampages without fear, surrounded by groups of younger boys who listened with rapt attention. A few yards away, older residents of the neighborhood, many with gray hair, passed out notices appealing for an end to the violence.

A man with wire-rimmed glasses handed one of the sheets to the black-capped youth. He accepted the paper, glanced at it and smiled respectfully at his elder. The boy then carefully folded it in half and continued the conversation about how the nightly targets are selected. “We don’t plan anything,” he said. “We just hit whatever we find at the moment.”

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
