CONSRV.(?) BRIT MP IS “FED UP” WITH BUSH AND CHRISTIAN RIGHT, GOES TO USA TO WORK FOR SHILLERY.

Will I get flamed for using any four letter words?  OK, that establishes what I’m thinking. But the hell with it. I am really so fuckin pissed off I’m having a hard time getting the words right.  Look ... this bastard is an MP.  That’s a Member of Parliament!  He is supposed to be representing a district in his own freekin country. Not sticking his unwanted foreign assed nose in our affairs.
I thought we ousted their sorry asses in ‘76 with the don’t tred on me thing.  But ... Theiiiiiiiirrrrrrr Baaaaaaaack!  And I wouldn’t approve even if he went to work for our side.  They don’t belong in the USA and if they do ya may as well give em the vote too.  No I’m jolly well not thru!

Tory MPs back Hillary Clinton for president
By Melissa Kite, Deputy Political Editor
Last Updated: 2:09am GMT 28/01/2008

Tory MPs are forging links with Hillary Clinton as the traditional alliance between the Conservatives and the Republican Party shows signs of increasing strain.

One Conservative MP is so convinced by the Democratic senator and wife of former president Bill Clinton that he travelled to the US this month to work on her campaign.

Simon Burns, the MP for West Chelmsford, has spent nine days pounding the streets as a member of Team Hillary. Other Tories backing Mrs Clinton include Alan Duncan, the shadow secretary of state for enterprise, and Nadine Dorries, the MP for Mid-Bedfordshire.

While most Conservatives support John McCain, the Republican senator who addressed the party’s conference in Bournemouth two years ago, some modernisers are turning to Mrs Clinton because they fear Mr McCain will lose the nomination to a more Right-wing candidate such as Mitt Romney.

Mr Burns turned up unannounced at the Clinton campaign headquarters in Manchester, New Hampshire, offering to work for free. He said: “I walked in and I said ‘I want to see Hillary Clinton as president and I’m prepared to work in any way you want to try to help’.

“I said, ‘Look, I’m British so the accent might not be helpful and I happen to be a Tory MP’. For those who understood what a Tory MP was politically, they were very good about it. They immediately put me to work. I did a considerable amount of telephone canvassing and helped with ‘visibilities’.”

This is a technique whereby campaigners stand at crossroads with placards chanting slogans as drivers hoot their horns. Mr Burns, who met Mrs Clinton at a rally, said he had told the Tory leader, David Cameron, about his activities.

“He asked, ‘Did you have a good time?’ and I explained what I had done and he just listened. I can’t speak for him, but he is an intelligent and astute politician, so he must be interested in Hillary.”

An increasing number of Tories have become alienated from the Republicans during George W Bush’s presidency because of the situation in Iraq. Mr Burns said: “Maybe it’s perceived as a bit odd for a Tory MP to want to support Hillary Clinton but the Republican Party has moved so far to the Right and has been captured by a rather unpleasant religious agenda, and the Tory Party under David Cameron is not equivalent to that. I have nothing in common with them and I wouldn’t have thought many of my Conservative colleagues had either.”

Mr Duncan, who supported the Democrats in the last two American elections, said: “I’m for Hillary unless it’s McCain, in which case I’m for McCain. Over the last 10 years I have been worried about the American deficit, the increasing dominance of the Christian Right and the need for deeper understanding of the Middle East.”

Ms Dorries, one of several female Tory MPs in the Clinton camp, said: “If it is going to be a Democrat I want Hillary to win the nomination. She’s a woman with a lot of substance and experience. It will be great to have a woman as president.”

Oh what a really good reason for this foreign assed slag pile of crap to support Mrs. Clinton.  I’d like nothing better had I the opportunity, then to use these interfering goobers for target practise.  Really I would.  Why doesn’t someone shoot their sorry asses?

A Clinton victory is an interesting prospect for Mr Cameron who last year distanced himself from “neo-con” Republicanism. MPs point out that Clinton and Cameron have similar stances on childcare and health and that Mr Cameron has much more in common with a centrist Clinton than he does with the American religious Right.

Mr Cameron has not declared a preference, although earlier this month he said he admired Barack Obama, the rival Democratic contender, whom he called a “brilliant speaker”.

One senior Tory said: “He likes the fact that some of his MPs are Democrats. In the end it’s the big picture that counts for him and if it’s Hillary he will make it work.”

Another Bubble Burst

I was listening to NPR this week while they breathlessly reported (with glee) that a report had been released that showed conclusivly that president Bush had been telling the national hurricane center, NOAA and NASA what to say in their reports on global warming.  Henry Waxman’s committee published the report yesterday and it was picked up and touted every hour.  Here’s a sample:

For the past 16 months, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee has been investigating allegations of political interference with government climate change science under the Bush Administration.

..

The White House exerted unusual control over the public statements of federal scientists on climate change issues. It was standard practice for media requests to speak with federal scientists on climate change matters to be sent to CEQ for White House approval. By controlling which government scientists could respond to media inquiries, the White House suppressed dissemination of scientific views that could conflict with Administration policies. The White House also edited congressional testimony regarding the science of climate change.

But then I see a link on Hot Air to an ABC News story where Max Mayfield, the former director of the Hurricane Center, refutes the report.

Max Mayfield: ‘No One Forced Me to Say Anything’

The former director of the National Hurricane Center says political pressure did not cause him to change his congressional testimony to downplay the link between global warming and hurricanes — contradicting the findings of a Democratic led investigation released Monday.

I can truthfully say that no one told me at any time what to say in regard to possible impacts of climate change on tropical cyclones,” said Max Mayfield in an e-mail to ABC News.

Mayfield was responding to questions about a section in a new report titled “Political Interference With Climate Change Science Under the Bush Administration” — the end result of a 16-month investigation by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. The committee is chaired by Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif.

Sweet.  The Dems have to hate it when you can actually get the truth and not have to only hear it from their mouthpieces.

A hero Passes

from MSNBC

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Evel Knievel, the red-white-and-blue-spangled motorcycle daredevil whose jumps over crazy obstacles including Greyhound buses, live sharks and Idaho’s Snake River Canyon made him an international icon in the 1970s, died Friday. He was 69.

Knievel’s death was confirmed by his granddaughter, Krysten Knievel. He had been in failing health for years, suffering from diabetes and pulmonary fibrosis, an incurable condition that scarred his lungs.

Knievel had undergone a liver transplant in 1999 after nearly dying of hepatitis C, likely contracted through a blood transfusion after one of his bone-shattering spills.

What boy in the 70’s with a bike didn’t fancy himself as Evil Knievel?  A sad day indeed.

Breaking: Hostages Taken at Clinton Campaign Headquarters

Michelle Malkin has good coverage, as does the Gateway Pundit

WMUR reporting…

An armed man has taken people hostage at the Hillary Clinton campaign office in Rochester, police said.

It was not clear how many hostages there were or what weapons the man has. Police have set up a command post near the office on 28 North Main St.
Will monitor it.

Pray that it turns out alright and that no one is hurt.

WDHD is reporting Rochester has been evacuated after a bomb threat.

Take with a grain of salt, but here’s one eyewitness report from WMUR:

“A young woman with a 6-month or 8-month-old infant came rushing into the store just in tears, and she said, ‘You need to call 911. A man has just walked into the Clinton office, opened his coat and showed us a bomb strapped to his chest with duct tape,’” witness Lettie Tzizik said.

Man Rapes Sleepwalking Woman

MSNBC

Man charged with raping sleepwalking woman
Homeless, HIV-positive man, 52, allegedly attacked student near highway

CINCINNATI - A homeless man was indicted Tuesday on charges that he raped a college student while she was sleepwalking along a highway near her home.

The woman, a 23-year-old University of Cincinnati student, woke up during the attack and fought back but could not get away, said Hamilton County prosecutor Seth Tieger.

Dexter Ford, 52, was also charged with felonious assault because he knew he was HIV-positive, Tieger told The Cincinnati Enquirer. Police said Ford told them that he is HIV positive, and Hamilton County Municipal Judge Fanon Rucker ordered Ford to be tested for venereal diseases. It wasn’t clear if the woman has been tested.

Wow.  I’m not that familiar with the phenomenon of sleepwalking, but holy cow.  To wake up and find yourself walking down the road would be one thing, but to wake up finding yourself out in the road being raped by a homeless guy is another kettle of fish altogether.

Strange.

When no news is news, but neither good news nor bad news

The Supreme Court of The United States has not yet reached a decision on whether it will consider the DC v Heller or the Parker v DC appeals. They might tell us by the week after Thanksgiving.

SCOTUSBLOG has been keeping an eye on things:

The Supreme Court on Tuesday announced no action on a new case testing the meaning of the Second Amendment — an issue the Court has not considered in 68 years. The Orders List contained no mention of either the District of Columbia’s appeal (07-290) or a cross-petition by challengers to the city’s flat ban on private possession of handguns (07-335). The next date for possible action on these cases is likely to be Nov. 26, following a pre-Thanksgiving Conference of the Justices set for Tuesday, Nov. 20.

The Court, of course, does not explain inaction. But among the possible reasons for delaying the case are these: one or more Justices simply asked for more time to consider the two cases; the Court may be rewriting the question or questions it will be willing to review — especially in view of the disagreement between the two sides on what should be at issue; the Court may have voted initially to deny review of one or both cases and one or more Justices are writing a dissent from the denial. The appeal in 07-290 (District of Columbia v. Heller) raises the key issue about the Second Amendment’s meaning — that is, whether it guarantees an individual right to have a handgun for private use, at least in one’s home — and the appeal in 07-335 (Parker v. District of Columbia) poses a question about who may bring lawsuits to challenge laws before they are actively enforced. Together, the cases thus present a somewhat complex mix for the Court, and it perhaps was not much of a surprise that no order issued on Tuesday. At no point is there likely to be an answer as to what happened to bring about the delay. Both cases are expected to be re-listed for the Nov. 20 Conference.

The Heller case claims that Washington DC’s gun laws are unconstitutional. Currently DC does not allow you to own a pistol, and the severely register rifle or shotguns that you are allowed to own cannot be loaded or functional within your own home. Lower court found for Heller, and DC appealed. Remember that DC is not a state, it is a city directly under the control of Congress. DC’s appeal makes the claim that they have state-like powers, and promotes other arguments based on the disastrous Miller decision of 1939. Heller focuses mainly on two points: that “keep and bear arms” includes pistols, and that a law that requires any owned firearm to be dismantled is unconstitutional.

The Parker case is somewhat different. Parker goes for the handgun-is-part-of-"keep and bear arms” just like Heller, but the decision handed down proclaimed that 2A is an Individual Right. It also hits on the concept of standing. So Parker actually eclipses Hellar in importance, though both cases are very similar. Read more about them here.

If you want a fuller understanding, do a bit of research into the recent Seegars v Aschroft case to understand DC’s concept of “standing” a bit better, and look at Medimmune v Genentech to read in wonder that it took SCOTUS more than 200 years to figure out that you don’t actually have to violate a law before challenging it’s constitutionality! (which is standing of a different kind. I think?)

These two cases carry a lot more baggage with them then just questions about owning guns in Washington DC. I only recently heard about the Standing aspects, and I may not have a clear understanding of that at all. But I gather, to my vast surprise, that no other case that questions the constitutional validity of a law has ever been brought before the SCOTUS before someone went and actually violated that law? Holy smokes. I would have thought that it would be THE DAMN JOB OF THE SUPREME COURT to pro-actively watch over all laws being made and occasionally rap down the gavel and say “Nope, no way, uh uh, can’t do that!”. Silly ‘ol naive me.

Heck, not being a lawyer, I could have the backs fact-asswards on all these cases! Because in my simple mind
1) the right of the people to keep and bear ANY KIND OF arms shall not be infringed EVER, ANYWHERE and
2) an honorable government would NEVER pass an unconstitutional law. and
3) OF COURSE it is proper to question the constitutionality of a law without having first violated it

Like I said, silly me.

Update

As is often the case, The Smallest Minority puts it so much better than I:

What is at stake here, essentially, is the tattered remnants of the Constitution. Does it still mean anything at all, or is it really just a piece of paper our officials, elected and unelected, can wipe their collective posteriors with? Will the Supreme Court do its duty to defend the Constitution, or abrogate that duty in such a way as to remove any doubt?

The First Amendment declaration “Congress shall make no law… abridging the freedom of speech....” was violated by the McCain-Feingold Incumbent Protection Campaign Finance Reform Act - and while some of the language was struck down by the Supreme Court, not all of it was. Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable search and seizure, and its restrictions on the issuance of and wording of warrants have been shredded by the unending “War on (some) Drugs™” along with the Fifth Amendment’s prohibition against deprivation of property without due process. The Fifth has been further pulped by decisions rendering the “public use” clause moot [ie Kelo v New London]. And the Tenth Amendment?

Let’s not go there.

Oh, and Silveira v. Lockyer? The Supreme Court denied cert. in 2003 and let that weed grow and flower in our Constitutional garden.

The Court’s composition has changed. It only takes four Justices to grant cert. Those four could very easily be Roberts, Alito, Scalia, and Thomas. This leaves five other justices, just one of which needs to understand his or her guardianship of the Constitution, to be unwilling to discard like a crumpled gum wrapper a fundamental enumerated right, to make it plain that the Constitution is not a relic, that it is not a “living document” to be redefined to mean anything judges sitting on a bench decide it means, whenever they so please.

So we will see.

This one is for all the marbles.

Re-Education Camp Dumped

From FIRE

Victory at University of Delaware
University Dumps Thought Reform Program
November 1, 2007

Late Thursday, University of Delaware President Patrick Harker released on the school’s website a Message to the University of Delaware Community terminating the university’s ideological reeducation program, which FIRE condemned as an exercise in thought reform. He stated, “I have directed that the program be stopped immediately. No further activities under the current framework will be conducted.” Harker also called for a “full and broad-based review” of the program’s practices and purposes. While concerns remain about the University of Delaware’s commitment to free expression, FIRE commends President Harker for his decision to immediately terminate the Orwellian residence life education program. FIRE will have more on this development tomorrow. President Harker’s message is reproduced in full below.
A Message to the University of Delaware Community

Nov. 1, 2007

The University of Delaware strives for an environment in which all people feel welcome to learn, and which supports intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, free inquiry and respect for the views and values of an increasingly diverse population. The University is committed to the education of students as citizens, scholars and professionals and their preparation to contribute creatively and with integrity to a global society. The purpose of the residence life educational program is to support these commitments.

While I believe that recent press accounts misrepresent the purpose of the residential life program at the University of Delaware, there are questions about its practices that must be addressed and there are reasons for concern that the actual purpose is not being fulfilled. It is not feasible to evaluate these issues without a full and broad-based review.

Upon the recommendation of Vice President for Student Life Michael Gilbert and Director of Residence Life Kathleen Kerr, I have directed that the program be stopped immediately. No further activities under the current framework will be conducted.

Vice President Gilbert will work with the University Faculty Senate and others to determine the proper means by which residence life programs may support the intellectual, cultural and ethical development of our students.

Patrick Harker
President

Only You Can Prevent Wild Fires

Officials: Boy With Matches Started Fire

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (AP) - Officials blamed a wildfire that consumed more than 38,000 acres and destroyed 21 homes last week on a boy playing with matches, and said they would ask a prosecutor to consider the case.

The boy, whose name and age were not released, admitted to sparking the fire on Oct. 21, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Sgt. Diane Hecht said Tuesday. Ferocious winds helped it quickly spread.

“He admitted to playing with matches and accidentally starting the fire,” Hecht said in a statement.

The boy was released to his parents, and the case will be presented to the district attorney’s office, Hecht said. It was not clear if he had been arrested or cited by detectives.

The fire began in an area near Agua Dulce and quickly spread. It was among 15 or so major wildfires that killed 14 people, destroyed some 2,100 homes and blackened 809 square miles from Los Angeles to the Mexican border last week.

Authorities arrested five people for arson during that period, but none have been linked to any of the major blazes.

All but four of the blazes are now fully contained. Firefighters on Wednesday continued to cut lines around the remaining fires and kept a close eye on the weather.

Forecasters have said moderate Santa Ana winds could pick up later in the week.

Investigators have blamed an arsonist for setting a destructive wildfire in Orange County that blackened 28,500 acres and destroyed 16 homes.

Authorities were seeking the driver of a white Ford F-150 pickup truck spotted in a canyon area around the time the fire broke out. They said they wanted to talk to the driver, but stopped short of calling the person a suspect.

Officials offered a $285,000 reward to anyone with information that will lead to an arrest and conviction.

He Must Have Taken a Bad Step

From Marco, we learn that a Paul Landingham in Salem, Oregon, decided it would be a good night to rape a woman. As he was in the act, a group of good folk happened by and decided that maybe it wasn’t such a good night for rape.

SALEM, Ore.—Five Good Samaritans stopped a rape in progress in a south Salem neighborhood, according to police.

Officers said a 22-year-old woman on crutches was walking near the intersection of Liberty and Boone streets southeast just before 1 a.m. Saturday when she was attacked and assaulted by 37-year-old Paul Landingham.

According to authorities, a car with five people was driving by, saw what was happening and came to the woman’s rescue.

Three men pulled Landingham off the woman and held him until police arrived at the scene

Good for them. Although, I have a feeling they may have had a little persuading to do to keep him there until the authorities arrived. Why, you ask? Have a look at his mug shot.

Heh. Maybe he should have just waited nicely.

Shock Troops Finally Sinks

We knew it was coming.  Hot Air, along with many others, has been following this story since the beginning.  Now Drudge has the scoop.

SHOCK DOCS: THE NEW REPUBLIC ‘SHOCK TROOPS’ STORY COLLAPSES
WED Oct 24 2007 12:29:44 ET

The DRUDGE REPORT has optained internal documents from the investigation of THE NEW REPUBLIC’S “Baghdad Diarist”, Scott Thomas Beauchamp, an Army private turned war correspondent who reported tales of military malfeasance from the Iraq War front.

The documents appear to expose that once the veracity of Beauchamp’s diaries were called into question, and an Army investigation ensued, THE NEW REPUBLIC has failed to publicly account for publishing slanderous falsehoods about the U.S. military in a time of war.

Document 1: Beauchamp Refuses to Stand by Story (Beauchamp Transcript Part 1)

THE NEW REPUBLIC has been standing behind the stories from their Baghdad Diarist, Scott Thomas Beauchamp, since questions were first raised about their accuracy over the summer. On August 10, the editors at TNR accused the Army of “stonewalling” their investigation into the stories by preventing them from speaking with Beauchamp. The DRUDGE REPORT has since obtained the transcript of a September 7 call between TNR editor Frank Foer, TNR executive editor Peter Scoblic, and Private Beauchamp. During the call, Beauchamp declines to stand by his stories, telling his editors that “I just want it to end. I’m not going to talk to anyone about anything really.” The editors respond that “we just can’t, in good conscience, continue to defend the piece” without an explanation, but Beauchamp responds only that he “doesn’t care what the public thinks.” The editors then ask Beauchamp to cancel scheduled interviews with the WASHINGTON POST and NEWSWEEK.

Document 2: Beauchamp Admits to “Gross Exaggerations and Inaccurate Allegations” (Beauchamp Transcript Part 2)

The DRUDGE REPORT has also obtained a signed “Memorandum for Record” in which Beauchamp recants his stories and concedes the facts of the Army’s investigation—that his stories contained “gross exaggerations and inaccurate allegations of misconduct” by his fellow soldiers.

Document 3: Army Investigation: Tales “Completely Fabricated,” Beauchamp Wanted to be Hemingway

The third document obtained by the DRUDGE REPORT is the Army’s official report on the investigation into the allegations made by Private Beauchamp. The Army concluded that Beauchamp had “completely fabricated” the story of mocking a disfigured woman, that his description of a “Saddam-era dumping ground” was false, and that claims that he and his men had deliberately targeted dogs with their armored vehicles was “completely unfounded.” Further the report stated “that Private Beauchamp desired to use his experiences to enhance his writing and provide legitimacy to his work possibly becoming the next Hemingway.”

The report concludes that “Private Beauchamp takes small bits of truth and twists and exaggerates them into fictional accounts that he puts forth as the whole truth for public consumption.”

Developing…

Hemmingway indeed.  Sheesh.

UPDATE:  As memoryleak mentions in the comments, the Drudge links have gone AWOL.  WizBang has a good writeup of the story as well as copies of the documents.

News Bits

Sorry for the lack of posting lately, just up to my eyes in work and can’t get a few minutes to put anything up.

Here are a couple of things I noticed this morning:

California Fires“And Still I Persist” has been added to my daily reads list.  This guy is right in the middle of it and posting good graphical displays of what’s going on.

Global Warming. (I thought the debate was over?) Two items:  First off, Harry Dingleberry thinks that the fires are the result of global warming.  The fact that southern California has a history of fires this time of year notwithstanding.

Senator Inhofe is warning of the cost of half-baked legislation to deal with the issue (ya think?).

Tim Robbins doesn’t like noise.

Finally, Dennis Kucinich saw a UFO, says a new book.

And The Winner Is…..

Betty B. Casey

Betty Casey Wins Limbaugh Smear Letter Auction

Betty B. Casey is the winner of the Limbaugh Smear Letter auction on eBay, which ended with a $2.1 million winning bid.

Betty B. Casey is a noted philanthropist and supporter of the arts, particularly the Washington Opera, and donated prime real estate to the Salvation Army when objections to a planned mayoral mansion for D.C. killed the plan. She has also donated $6,900 to Barack Obama’s campaign, as well as to the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Thank you Betty for donating to this worthy cause, and poking these silly politicians in the eye.

Of course, now Harry Dingelberry Reid is taking the credit:

Rush Limbaugh should know that this letter that they’re auctioning is going to be something that raises money for a worthwhile cause. I don’t know what we could do more important than helping to ensure that children of our fallen soldiers and police officers who have fallen in the line of duty have the opportunity for their children to have a good education. Think of this, more than $2 million — that will really help. that’s, again, an understatement. There’s only a little bit of time left so i would ask those that are wanting to do more, that they can go to Harry Reid letter and it will come up on e-bay. I encourage anyone interested with the means to consider contributing to this worthwhile cause. I strongly believe when we can put our differences aside, even Harry Reid and Rush Limbaugh, we should do that and try to accomplish good things for the American people. This does that, madam president. More than $2 million for a letter signed by this senator and my friends.

Mark Hemmingway over at National Review covers Rush’s challenge to the congresscritters:

As of Friday morning, the Limbaugh letter is going for over $2 million. The auction ends today at 1 P.M., during Rush’s show. Previously, Limbaugh issued a public challenge to all of the senators involved to join him in matching the winning bid. “I would like to issue this challenge to Senator Reid and the 41 senators who signed his letter. You say you support the military. You say you’re big, and you think it’s patriotic, and that I was unpatriotic. Well, I would like for each of you, Senator Reid, and the 40 senators who signed, to match whatever the winning bid is. Show us your support for the U.S. military by all 41 of you pro-military people, Democrats in the Senate, match whatever the winning bid is and send that amount to the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation,” he said.

Given the huge bids on the eBay sale, I didn’t suspect that too many of the 41 senators’ offices would have that much cash lying around. But I called all of them to ask anyway. As long as the mood in Washington is a spitting contest over who’s more patriotic, maybe I could get some agreement over Limbaugh’s publicity stunt. Or, failing that, maybe a divisive partisan comment might drive the story back on to the front page, with the goal of further publicizing the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation.

No such luck. I called all 41 senators involved, and I spoke to press secretaries or left messages with 33 Senate offices (I tried repeatedly, and you’d be surprised at how many busy signals you get trying to get ahold of senators.) I told dozens of press secretaries all about the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation and Rush’s challenge. I got only two responses, and of those, only Senator Ken Salazar of Colorado proved himself above the recent pettiness. He issued a terse statement: “The Senator supports their [the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation] work and is pleased to hear that Rush does as well.”

‘Bout Time He Showed Some

Balls, that is.

Here are some snippets from the article:

President Bush attacked Congress on Wednesday, ripping the new Democratic leadership for failing to achieve much in their first nine months of power.

...

“One of Congress’ basic duties is to fund the day-to-day operations of the federal government. Yet Congress has not sent me a single appropriations bill,” Bush said. “

...

With all these pressing responsibilities, one thing Congress should not be doing is sorting out the historical record of the Ottoman Empire,” Bush said. “The resolution on the mass killings of Armenians beginning in 1915 is counterproductive. ...

...

“Congress has more important work to do than antagonizing a democratic ally in the Muslim world, especially one that’s providing vital support for our military every day,” Bush said.

Indeed.  Although I don’t think Congress believes there is anything more important than “antagonizing a democratic ally in the Muslim world”.

Thin-Skinned Cop, Or Potty Mouthed Neighbor?

I thank the Lord daily that my closest neighbor is 1/2 mile away.  I can say and do what I want and am not in earshot of anyone.  I’ve cursed many a household appliance, so am not surprized by Dawn’s outburst, but 90 days in jail?  Good grief.

Potty mouth! Woman cited for cursing at toilet

SCRANTON, Pa. - A Scranton woman who admitted shouted profanities at her overflowing toilet within earshot of a neighbor was cited for disorderly conduct, authorities said.

Dawn Herb could face up to 90 days in jail and a fine of up to $300.

“It doesn’t make any sense. I was in my house. It’s not like I was outside or drunk,” Herb told The Times-Tribune of Scranton. “The toilet was overflowing and leaking down into the kitchen and I was yelling (for my daughter) to get the mop.”

Herb doesn’t recall exactly what she said, but she admitted letting more than a few choice words fly near an open bathroom window Thursday night.

Her next-door neighbor, a city police officer who was off-duty at the time, asked her to keep it down, police said. When she continued, the officer called police.

Mary Catherine Roper, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union in Philadelphia, took issue with the citation.

“You can’t prosecute somebody for swearing at a cop or a toilet,” she said.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
