When Needs Must

Making Do

Just a quick pic from my vacation I thought was funny. On the outer island of Great Guana Cay in Abaco, there are pretty much no cars. What powered transportation there is, is by golf cart or by ATV. There are only one or two roads anyway; the island is just a couple miles long and probably not even a quarter mile wide. Perhaps 150 people actually live there. Next to the one grocery store is the one church, Seaside Gospel, very quaint and well kept, and very small. But the island is quite pretty, and people go there for vacation, and probably a good number of them choose to get married there. That explains this, which I saw on a rather well used golf cart parked down by the main wharf. Gotta have some kind of limo for the newlyweds, right? Even if it only goes 300 yards from the church to the docks.

after this one, I promise, no more vacation pictures. promise!

Here’s Captain Kirk getting a piece of the action. Posted below the fold because, well, when I said ‘piece of the action,’ I meant it.

Fun With Your Browser

O2C: Objects To See

Ok, I’ve got all the concrete out at this point. I snuck a bit into this dumpster and that one, but I’ve still got several hundred pounds of it out back to dispose of. I’ll get to it.

Meanwhile, I took a break to let some of the dust settle, and did a little more of my “continuing education” on truss design. Hey, it’s all online. The ‘net is more than just boobs and sports scores. While poking about to see if a Pratt truss was stronger than a Warren truss (ceteris paribus: yup), I came across this:

image

Oooh, pretty. It’s the Spruce Peak base lodge at the Stowe Mountain ski resort in Stowe Vermont. It’s an octagonal building that’s completely open on the inside, 80 feet in diameter. The roof is about 30 feet high, not counting the cupola. And it’s all open underneath; the roof is supported by wooden trusses. Warren trusses (equilateral triangles) make up the 8 major rafters, while the upper part of the building is supported by Pratt trusses (right triangles, though the 30-60-90 ones are strongest). There are some neat pictures of it at the truss builder’s homepage, here, plus a bunch of acrobat files that show the detailed design. The 8 truss rafters all come together on a central free hanging column. Splaying is kept in check by a “bent” foot extension of the trusses that extends the column up into the cupola. An 80 foot span from only a 30 foot peak is pretty darn good for wood. Most ancient cathedrals in Europe would have a 60 foot tall roof for that, perhaps even more. So it’s pretty cool. And pretty strong; the roof has to be able to handle a very heavy snow load.

But what was even more cool was that that page has a link to the O2C add-in. This is a little gizmo you can add to your browser that let’s you view and manipulate 3-D graphics files. It was pretty easy to install, and even easier to get Firefox to recognize; just tell Firefox to use Firefox the first time you want to view one of the files, like this:

image

That passes for file association, and it works fine after that. And work fine it does, though in a limited way. You can zoom in and out (+/-) and you can rotate the image (mouse or cursor keys) around the X and Z axis, but you can’t pan up, down or to the side. What they decide is the center point is what you’re stuck with. Still, it’s pretty neat:

I have no idea how common .o2c files are, but now that I have the add-in up and running, I’ll be on the lookout for more.

Time to order

This morning I went to the local farmer’s market. I’d placed an order with Jean. She’s runs a family business, a pig farm. Started off as a 4-H club project one of her kids started. For twenty years now she’s been the only person I buy pork from. She’s branched out over the years. Now she also offers chickens (free-range, of course) and eggs. Today I also noticed she’s offering turkeys. I’m betting I won’t be getting the usual Butterball turkey this year. My wife will probably go for a free-range turkey from Jean. Even if it’s more expensive. Jean is charging $3/lb, with a $20 deposit up front.

So I asked Jean, ‘You taking orders for pumpkin pies?’ Jean said sure:

Don’t think I want any pumpkin pie this year…

Poor Doggies

It’s that time of year again. Halloween approaches. If you don’t have kids to dress up, and you don’t want to put on something slutty for one of those adult parties, then you can devise costumes for your pets. These pictures showed up in my inbox today.

image
It’s a Bengal Setter! A magnificent dye job with a whole lot of product to fluff out that tail. I hope it washes out.

image
No muff too tough; a bit bull wearing some extra fur becomes a mighty lion.

image
not too knight dear, I’ve got a headache. A tiny chihuahua becomes a great destrier.

image
I think Hades was thinking of something a little bigger when he came up with the idea of Cerberus.

image
funny and sick at the same time. New from Nabisco, BeegleSnax! Poor doogy.

As is almost always the case, these emails are really just snags from some web page. Here’s the link to the original site, where there are even more of these wild doggy costumes.

tough guy

Razor? Ya Big Sissy! Use A Shovel!

image

Alexander Karpenko, a 35-year-old English teacher from Nizhny Novgrod, Russia shaves with all kinds of sharp objects, including a shovel, hatchet or scissors, but not with razors.

Impressed by the war stories his grandfather, a WW2 veteran, told him about men who used anything sharp to shave on the battlefield, Alexander first experimented shaving with scissors when he was 16 years old. He realized razors were a luxury and decided to teach himself to use other more helpful sharp objects for his morning grooming. For the past 20 years, Karpenko has used all kinds of stuff like shovels, chisels or sharp knives to remove facial hair and claims he has never once used a common razor.

Karpenko knows shaving with unorthodox tools is dangerous, and doesn’t recommend the practice. He did, however, tell reporters that he loves the thrill of having a sharp blade pressed against his throat, knowing that one false move could be fatal. Maybe his wife should get back to worrying.

Our guys just grew beards when their GI issue razors wore out.

This is why you’re poor

You buy stupid sh*t like this:

Ready America 77100 Cat Evacuation Kit

From the Manufacturer
Grab ‘n go Car Evacuation Kit. Three day emergency essentials you’ll need for your pet in an emergency. Emergency Kit Contains: 5 Year Shelf Life Cat Food, 3-Water Pouches 4.225-Ounce, Pet Water Bowl, Cat Collar with Toy Mouse, Cat Treats, Cat Litter Pan, Bag of Cat Litter, Litter Scoop, Pet Wipes, Pet ID Tag, 3-Antiseptic Cleansing Wipes, 1-Inch Gauze Roll, Triple Antibiotic Ointment Packet, 1 Pair Nitrile Gloves, Pet Carrier

Is this a joke? If so, it’s a $53 dollar joke. But the really funny part is in the comments:

My main issue with this kit is that the bag is too heavy for my cat to carry and there is no way to strap it to his back. To be honest it seems like they made this kit for a person or at the very least a very large and strong cat. I tried for several hours to get my cat to carry this kit during our emergency drill and it was pretty much impossible. Also the gloves in the kit are clearly meant for a human and not a cat. Other than that I guess it’s a good kit but they need to make everything the proper size for your average american cat.

1) My kit contained dog food instead of cat food

As a previous reviewer mentioned, there is hardly any extra room inside the carrier for the actual cat, once the other items are included. Nevertheless, I attempted to make the best of it, and I removed a few unnecessary items, such as road flares(?) and a very uncomfortable, silvery cat blanket that frightened my cat. There was some kind of leash in there as well, but I have to say, the attachments on the end werent designed with cat comfort in mind. I can only assume that you clamp the red copper side to one foot, and the black copper side to the another foot, but then the end you are supposed to hold also has two clamps - how is this intended to be used?

We were enjoying a leisurely evening on the lido deck when the order came to evacuate the ship. Were we ever surprised when our precious sank! Not recommended for use on cruise ships or water.

UPDATE: This gets even better. It made FARK.com. Some FARK comments:

Grandma leads police on slow-speed chase

Where’s peiper when you need him?

Great-grandmother leads UK police on 40km chase ... at just 16km/h

Then it gets weird:

During the bizarre low-speed chase, an officer ran alongside 76-year-old Caroline Turner’s blue Ford Fiesta and yelled at her to pull over, The Clacton and Frinton Gazette reported.

“It was a surprise to me when he knocked on the window,” Turner said.

Methinks she drives too slow! Or 16km/hr is the best that a Ford Fiesta can do?

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
