Final Update From Florida

Well, here it is Saturday morning. No wind. A few showers last night and very early this morning. Anti-climactic? YOU BET!!

I was kinda looking forward to a bit of a blow but that was not in the cards. So, yep, turned out to be a bust but thinking on it carefully, that's the kind of bust one wants. We in Hernando County were spared but things were ugly in the Port Charlotte area and inland. Now the radio and TV pukes along the east coast will take their turn putting on the media exaggeration associated with a storm like this. Good luck catching any sort of regular programming.

When all was said and done we never really got any of the predicted winds or rains, either. If gusts hit 20 MPH yesterday we were lucky. I was expecting 40-50 MPH from those feeder bands we were constantly warned about.

Right now it is sunny and the temps are rising. Got a grand total of one inch of rain. Think about it. A regular summer thunderstorm can dump 2 inches in an hour. We got one inch over three days. That SUCKS!!!!

On the bright side, all my plants and flowers survived.

As a side note, as I usually do every morning before it turns too unbearably hot, I was outside pulling weeds and trimming dying flowers. The birdbaths needed to be re-installed. The bird feeders replaced and restocked. The hanging plants re-hung in the protective shade of the trees. Squirrels are underfoot eating the seeds from the feeder I dumped yesterday.

All of a sudden I hear this racket on my screen porch. I turn around and see this hawk (big guy, too!) swooping upwards to take a perch on one of the peaks of my roof. Now, 5 years ago I was in my kitchen looking outside and saw this EXPLOSION of feathers and then a hawk lifting off with a mourning dove in its talons. So I knew that the fellow this morning did not come down to my rooftop to socialize. I focused on its claws and saw nothing there. I looked back toward the screen porch and there was this squirrel, chattering in a manner I've never heard squirrels chatter before. There's the "pissed off" chatter. The "calling a mate chatter." The "summoning the young" chatter. And the "normal" chatter.

This sounded like a "I am terrified and if I wore pants I'd have shit them" chatter. This boy was scared. Immobile. Chattering like a terrorist getting his nuts ripped off by an angry Marine.

Anyway, the hawk flew off and I went to visit Mr. Squirrel to see if maybe the hawk had punctured him with his claws. Mr. Squirrel was fine. He ran off still chattering a mile a minute, probably even more terrified now that this human had forced it from its seemingly protected place back onto the roof where Mr. Hawk might come back for a repeat attempt.

So today, even though Hurricane Charley disappointed, Mother Nature provided something like a consolation prize. The Hawk, though, is probably pissed off and later today at the Hawk Bar he'll catch hell from his hawk buddies for having missed a "stupid" squirrel.

Back to the hurricane story.

This same sort of hoopla we had associated with Charley, with county officials getting all worked up, people told to evacuate, etc. happened about three or four years ago. And then, same as this year, nothing. But-----back then the county used it as an excuse to fund a multi-million dollar emergency center (for government employees engaged in storm prep, and what not.) We are still fighting its construction. (yes, I am going somewhere with this.)

Yesterday a local radio host found out from listeners that the county planned to shut off electricity, water, etc. to all customers along their imaginary evacuation line. No exceptions. Draw a line down Highway 19 and everything west of it was cut off regardless if some of that area was not even close to being in a flood plain due to its height. The Sheriff and his posse went around telling places like Lowes, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, etc. they had to close, too.

Hey! It makes sense, right?

Well, considering that all this was taking place around 10-11 AM and forecasts called for Charley to hit us between 5 and 6, they wanted to cut everything off at 12!!!!!!!!!

NOON!!!

Yet by 12 we STILL were not getting any winds whatsoever. Stores had long been closed. And now it looked like power was shutting down, too.

A HUGE outcry went out and the county was inundated with protestations. The person in charge of the decision was located and put on the air. She said that since the storm had "slowed down" they were re-thinking that decision and moving the hour up but wouldn't fix a time certain just yet.

Mind you, Charley had been ACCELERATING (not slowing down) its forward speed from last night through the morning. This business of it slowing down was a patent lie by the county as we'd known since the day previous we'd get hit between 4 and 6. When asked why the county's phone answerers were telling people power was going to get cut off at 12 she said she'd call them and clear it up.

Almost an hour later people are calling the show saying they were STILL getting told 12 o'clock!!!

Sorry, but to me this is nothing but pure incompetence and I would not be surprised if it were not a ploy by these people to cite to our County Commissioners the examples of the citizenry not able to get timely information as a ruse for additional justification for and even more money to build an even bigger emergency management shelter to include improved communications devices.

Funny thing is, no land line phone service was ever disrupted and all this woman had to do was place one phone call to resolve it. If nothing else, relay instructions via cell phone. So why weren't those calls made? And if they were and bad info was still getting out, those employees should be fired.

AHHH!! Petty local politics!

Well, boys and girls, that's the story from Hernando County, Florida.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone else experienced similar bullshit in their county regarding disaster preparedness?.

Reporting From The Jaws Of Hell

Shiver me timbers, Vilmar! For God's sake, take cover, man!

Allan here! I'm anxiously waiting the latest report from Vilmar. Stay cool, buddy!

UPDATE FROM VILMAR: I am safely ensconced now at my BMEWS Central home, on the west coast of Florida. Things are ugly in the center of the state but here in Spring Hill a breeze is blowing, the sun just set and I'm going, "what the.........?!?!?! All this excitement, all this media hype, demands for evacuation, boarding up windows, taking in patio furniture, stocking up on toilet paper and buying all the water, bread, and milk in stores was for naught."

Better than having your home blown away, I guess.

Time for a drink.

See you all tomorrow!

Update

Well, here it is, 1:40 PM and the weather service says Charley may go to a Category 4 soon. Winds at 145 with tops at 162.

Outside it is warm with nary a breeze blowing.

Being 40 or so miles north of Tampa we will probably get passed on by as it nails the Sarasota area (further south of Tampa Bay) and goes toward Orlando.

The ranting will go on until they pull my plug!!!

Kerry’s China Connection

Thanks to Insight we are able to get more clues into the duplicitousness nature of and possible selling out of America by John Kerry. Photos have emerged showing Kerry in a private meeting with a Chinese company tied to their military. Not surprising, Kerry's campaign is refusing comment. His photo can be seen here, Boston Capital's Website. (note: the link is good. The server is saturated so you might get a 404 error.)

One of the people on the trip was a guy named Marcus who had little to say. When asked:
"Marcus also refused to provide details of the China trip, including the time and date, whether the senator took money for his services, or the identity of the Chinese officials with whom Kerry met. "I am not doing an interview with you, and please don't call me again."

Who is Marcus? Glad you asked.
The chief of Boston Capital and his Chinese-born wife, Moying Li, live in the same Beacon Hill district of Boston as Kerry, who used his half-interest in the family mansion to borrow $6.4 million to save his then-faltering presidential campaign.

Read the article to see who Marcus' business partners are. Um hmmm, the company is a front for a Chinese munitions concern that tried to smuggle machine guns into the US and once run by a guy who was greeted in the White House by Bill "Disgraceful Piece of Shit" Clinton. Remember Charlie Trie? Yep, both of them. Together. With Clinton.

The article closes thusly:
John Kerry frequently has stated that he has had contacts with high-ranking officials of foreign governments. Yet, the Kerry campaign is refusing to answer any questions about the candidate's privately sponsored trade trip to China or his relationship with Marcus. But it would appear that the presidential candidate has many friends at high levels in Beijing. The Chinese official Internet news outlet of the People's Daily, official newspaper of the Communist Party of China, recently endorsed the senator from Massachusetts for president of the United States.

Interesting, indeed!

Is The Poodle Unfit For Command?

In a review of the book, " Unfit for Command -- Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry" Tony Blankley gets into the nuts and bolts of typical campaign scandals and points out how usually scandal books are penned by one or two people through a ghost writer. Never before has there been anything like this where almost 200 officers and men accuse Kerry of scandalous behavior.

Take, for example, the fact that Kerry drags around some guys supporting him. Then take a look at the fact that, in the photo of Kerry with 19 fellow officers:
"11 have asked him to stop using their image with him. Of the remaining eight, two are deceased, four don't wish to be involved, and one is not a supporter of Kerry but didn't have the opportunity to sign the letter calling for the photo to be taken off the Website. Only one of the 19, Skip Barker, supports Mr. Kerry. "

To me, that's pretty damning.

Mr. Blankley goes on to say that the book:
"is replete with copious footnotes, a detailed index and two appendices. Firsthand witnesses are named and quoted verbatim to support each specific, shocking charge. Each charge of false heroics is logically presented. "

All we can do now is wait its release and see how the Dems respond. I am certain it will be a dirty response attempting to discredit as many of those 200 as possible by digging up dirt on them. Speeding tickets, divorces, DUIs, etc. How they weave those post-Vietnam acts by these men into charges that these actions caused them to lie will be very interesting indeed.

As Tony says, someone is lying.

Let's find out who.

Kerry’s Swift Meltdown

Hugh Hewitt accurately points out how, since it has taken so long for Kerry's campaign to explain the inconsistencies in his Cambodia stories, that things really are not going well for The Poodle's camp.

The longer they take to respond, the more implausible will be any explanation. And why isn't the press DOGGEDLY going after the Dems for records, files, explanations, reasons, clarifications? (Unfortunately we know the answer, don't we?)

So now plenty of time has gone by and what's the best Kerry can come up with?

That it was JANUARY, not Christmas, that he was in Cambodia. Obviously not too "WELL - SEARED" in Kerry's memory was it?

How can anyone take this piece of shit assclown moonbat seriously? God help our country if he gets elected!!

Isn’t This Special?

If you've been following the Kerry campaign at all you know he keeps harping on big corporations getting tax breaks for taking their companies overseas.

But did you know John FUCKING Kerry went looking for a tax shelter in the 80s and when it went under he went on the warpath attempting to close all those loopholes?

Bet you didn't know that, did you? Well, now you do.

What Did John Kerry Do On 9/11?

You've all heard Kerry on the stump complaining about how, on 9-11, President Bush sat in a classroom 7 minutes and did nothing. He then went on to say how he would have immediately left and done something.

Well, thanks to G R A S S F I R E we can now see exactly what The Poodle did on that same day---not a fucking thing for 40 minutes because he "could not think!"

We continue to be amazed at how political leaders are reading off the Michael Moore playbook as outlined in is movie, "Fahrenheit 9/11." It further emphasizes the importance of Grassfire's new publication, "Michael Moore's Misleads."

For example, Moore goes to great lengths in an attempt to show that President Bush didn't know what to do when he first found out that America was under attack on 9/11. Moore shows footage of the President sitting in a Florida classroom for seven minutes after an aid told him about the World Trade Center attacks. Moore makes the President look incompetent and confused.

It's a Moore mislead. Moore manipulated the video footage and ignored the facts. We expose Moore's tactics in our pamphlet. It's Mislead #6.

+ + Kerry attacks Bush for the 7-minute delay

A few days ago, Sen. John Kerry read from the Moore playbook in criticizing President Bush for the supposed 7-minute delay. Here is what Kerry said:
Had I been reading to children and had my top aide whispered in my ear, 'America is under attack,' I would have told those kids very politely and nicely that the President of the United States had something that he needed to attend to -- and I would have attended to it.

+ + What Did Kerry Actually Do On 9/11?

Before we go on, we want to state that we disagree with Michael Moore's analysis of the supposed "7-minute delay." We also disagree with leaders like Sen. Kerry making this an issue. Events were unfolding quickly and there was much confusion in those first moments.

That said, it is important to point out the hypocrisy of Sen. Kerry by looking at what Kerry himself did at that same moment in time.

Here is Sen. Kerry's explanation of what he was doing when the first attacks came (see link):

KERRY: I was in the Capitol. We'd just had a meeting -- we'd just come into a leadership meeting in Tom Daschle's office, looking out at the Capitol. And as I came in, Barbara Boxer and Harry Reid were standing there, and we watched the second plane come in to the building. And we shortly thereafter sat down at the table and then we just realized nobody could think, and then boom, right behind us, we saw the cloud of explosion at the Pentagon. And then word came from the White House, they were evacuating, and we were to evacuate, and so we immediately began the evacuation.

+ + Kerry: "Nobody Could Think"

For the record, it was about 40 minutes between the when the second tower was hit and when the Pentagon was hit. For 40 minutes, Sen. John Kerry, a sitting member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, sat in a room with Senate Leader Tom Daschle.

In Kerry's own words, "nobody could think."

Sen. Kerry sat in a very vulnerable place on Capitol Hill for 40 minutes after the second tower was hit. What did he mean when he said, "nobody could think"? Perhaps the chaos and confusion of the moment meant that a group of top leaders in the Senate really did not know what to do! So they sat in a vulnerable Senate office, exposed to attack. Apparently, Kerry and others did not yet realize that America was at war.

When did Kerry know America was at war?

Again, in Sen. Kerry's own words:
And as we went out of the building, my immediate feeling was, we're at war. I mean, that was the sense, that we are under attack. People are attacking the United States of America and we needed to respond.

So, more than 45 minutes after the second tower was hit, as Sen. Kerry was evacuating the Capitol, his "immediate feeling" was that America was "at war." In his own words, it took Sen. Kerry 45 minutes to come to this conclusion.

And this bastard attacks our President? Vile, verminous scumbag!

Anti-Kerry Friday

Today is ANTI-KERRY FRIDAY so before I batten down the hatches I want to fire off a few salvoes. Things will remain relatively calm until about 1 PM here (albeit some wind, a little rain.) The shit is supposed to hit the fan about 5 or 6 this evening.

So until then I will be clearing the yard of loose objects, tying down what I can and hoping for the best on the rest. I fully expect my flower beds and plants to be torn to pieces and right now they are either in full bloom or beginning to be. My fall blooming October Roses are 5 feet tall, 4 feet wide, with bloom buds starting to set. They will be shredded. My angel trumpets, 5 feet high, as wide, chock full of white, pink and purple double trumpets 5 to 8 inches long with bells about 5 inches across will be shredded. Trellisses will be downed and destroyed. Dozens of my trees will shed branches. It will be a holy mess. Nothing I can do about it.

On the bright side, I'll have grrrrrreat compost in about 3 months!

Anyway, gotta run to batten down a friend's house and my parents' house.

When I return, about 10 AM, I will spew forth a shitload of stuff against that dirtball Kerry. What an absolute asshole and waste of human skin. I despise the bastard. More than I despised Clinton. And I now hold all Dummycraps who support him (and refuse to see through his hypocrisy because of their hate for President Bush) in such low esteem you have to look up to see down.

FUCK THEM ALL!!!

I'll be back!!!

Daily Dose

Today is Friday The 13th .... Are You Triscadecaphobic**?

Quote Of The Day

"Horse sense is the thing a horse has which keeps it from betting on people."
-- W. C. Fields (1880 - 1946)

On This Day In History

August 13,1940 - The Battle Of Britain Begins
On this day in 1940, German aircraft begin the bombing of southern England, and the Battle of Britain, which will last until October 31, begins. The Germans called it "the Day of the Eagle," the first day of the Luftwaffe's campaign to destroy the RAF, the British Royal Air Force, and knock out British radar stations, in preparation for Operation Sea Lion, the amphibious invasion of Britain. Almost 1,500 German aircraft took off the first day of the air raid, and 45 were shot down. Britain lost 13 fighters in the air and another 47 on the ground. But most important for the future, the Luftwaffe managed to take out only one radar station, on the Isle of Wight, and damage five others. This was considered more trouble than it was worth by Herman Goering, commander of the Luftwaffe, who decided to forgo further targeting of British radar stations because "not one of those attacked so far has been put out of operation."

Historians agree that this was a monumental mistake on the part of the Germans. Had Goering and the Luftwaffe persisted in attacking British radar, the RAF would not have been able to get the information necessary to successfully intercept incoming German bombers. "Here, early in the battle, we get a glimpse of fuddled thinking at the highest level in the German camp," comments historian Peter Fleming. Even the Blitz, the intensive and successive bombing of London that would begin in the last days of the Battle of Britain, could not compensate for such thinking. There would be no Operation Sea Lion. There would be no invasion of Britain. The RAF would not be defeated.
