EPA Still Dreaming, But More Realistically

EPA Sets Lower Biofuel Requirements For Non-Existent Biomass Ethanol

Farmers still raking in the profits over worst scam in history, while your food bill continues to skyrocket

The Environmental Protection Agency will require oil refiners to blend 16.55 billion gallons of renewable fuels into the nation’s gasoline supply this year as part of its efforts to spur new fuel technology and decrease fossil fuel dependence.

Nearly eight months past the legal due date, the EPA announced its yearly blending targets under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) on Tuesday. Renewable fuel associations applauded the announcement, but the oil and gas industry criticized the agency for continuing to push a “broken” system.

The EPA’s blending requirements include 6 million gallons of the cellulosic biofuel, which is made from woodchips. That number is down from the 14 million gallons called for in January.

The cellulosic biofuel requirement has angered the oil industry for years because, until this year, there was no commercial production of the advanced fuel in the country.

The EPA targets will require a total of 36 billion gallons of biofuel to be blended by 2022.

Republican lawmakers in Congress have also targeted the RFS system, saying it artificially inflates prices for corn and increases costs for livestock facilities.

“RFS announcement fails to provide immediate relief for livestock/food producers, small biz & consumers,” Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R., Va.) tweeted Tuesday. “It’s time to repeal the RFS.”

The industry has also warned that the requirements are forcing refiners close to a “blend wall,” the point where cars cannot handle the level of ethanol or it is undesirable for consumers.

This gasohol crap is just the pits. Stupid stupid stupid. Not only does it jack up the price of gas, it significantly lowers the MPG of all vehicles using it. You can’t fool science: alcohol has less energy than gasoline, so any blended mix requires more to make the same amount of power. Period. My car gets 2-3mpg more on those increasingly rare occasions when I can find some actual real gasoline to put in the tank.

And since we now seem to have a huge abundance of frakkable shale oil, what’ the damn point? Yeah, I blame Bush for this BS. And I blame Obongo for keeping it going, along with every pansy-ass dickhead in DC. Kill the program. Period. Kill the subsidy. Period. Farmers growing too much corn? Turn it into masa flour and use that for foreign aid. Screw sending the poor and starving’s dictators billions in cash that they’ll only spend on Ray-Bans and Paris apartments, send them food. Nothing but food. And maybe some water filtration systems. Maybe.

I wonder if (hahahahaha, “if") those TWO wood chip stills running will be able to turn out those 6 million gallons.

KiOR’s biorefinery in Columbus, Mississippi started commercial production in March using wood chips to produce cellulosic fuels, and Ineos just announced on July 31 that their Indian River BioEnergy plant in Florida has begun operations to make biofuels from plant waste. Both of these are now operating at full commercial scale. Whether they’re making money yet, we don’t know, but the fact that they’re producing large volumes of cellulosic biofuels may be a historic turning point. These developments are important steps towards developing a real advanced biofuel industry that can help move us toward a point where we have other options for how to fuel our cars and trucks.

Production goals for both these plants are rather optimistic at this point. And, just like windmills and solar panels, I wonder if either could survive an hour without massive subsidies and tax breaks.

Special People Have Extra Special Privileges

DOJ Won’t Prosecute IRS Snoops

Google up the earlier news stories and I’ll bet you two things: 1) the accessed records all belonged to Republicans, and 2) BRA.

So much for justice. So much for equal treatment under the law. And so much for accountability, ethics, and responsibility in government. “I’ll reward my friends, and punish my enemies” was Fearless Reader’s line, wasn’t it?

Confidential tax records of several political candidates and campaign donors were improperly accessed by government officials, but the Justice Department declined to prosecute any of the officials involved, even in one “willful” violation of the law, an IRS watchdog reported.

In a July 3 letter to Sen. Chuck Grassley (R., Iowa), the Treasury inspector general for tax administration (TIGTA) J. Russell George acknowledged that government officials had illegally accessed tax records of candidates and donors in four instances since 2006.

TIGTA determined that in three of the cases the access was “inadvertent.”

“In the fourth case, we presented evidence of a willful unauthorized access to the Department of Justice, but the case was declined for prosecution,” George wrote.

Grassley has sent a letter to the Justice Department asking why it declined to prosecute in the case of willful unauthorized access.

“Any agency with access to tax records is required to act with neutrality and professionalism, not political bias,” Grassley said in a statement. “The Justice Department should answer completely and not hide behind taxpayer confidentiality laws to avoid accountability for its decision not to prosecute a violation of taxpayer confidentiality laws.”

What a bunch of pond scum.

Gee, I wonder …

Experts find link between deadly MERS virus and camels

Scientists have found an intriguing clue that suggests camels might somehow be involved in infecting people in the Middle East with the mysterious MERS virus.

Since the virus was first identified last September, there have been 94 illnesses, including 46 deaths, from MERS, or Middle East respiratory syndrome, mostly in Saudi Arabia. Aside from several clusters where the virus has likely spread between people, experts have largely been stumped as to how patients got infected.

In a preliminary study published on Friday, European scientists found traces of antibodies against the MERS virus in dromedary, or one-humped, camels, but not the virus itself. Finding antibodies means the camels were at one point infected with MERS or a similar virus before fighting off the infection.

The antibodies were found in all 50 camel blood samples from Oman, compared to 15 of 105 samples from Spanish camels. Animals from Spain, the Netherlands and Chile were tested for comparison to those from Oman. No MERS antibodies were found in tests done in cows, sheep or goats.

In other news, there’s another job opening for a ladder salesman in Oman.

In a study into what kind of animal “reservoir” may be fueling the outbreak in humans, scientists said they had found strong evidence it is widespread among dromedary camels in the Middle East.

...

“There are different types of contact of humans with these animals that could lead to transmission of a virus.”

Experts not involved in the study hailed its findings as a major step towards solving the mystery of, and ultimately controlling, the MERS virus.

The majority of politicians and the media are left wing or liberals. The BBC are infested with them

LyndonB had this among much else to say.

The majority of politicians and the media are left wing or liberals. The BBC are infested with them and they have infiltrated all levels of the judiciary, schools, Universities and the police. However the people by and large are not liberal or left wing,

And he is quite right too.  His country hasn’t just been stolen by certain protected groups. It’s being given away or sold out by their elected representatives as well as a well entrenched 5th column.  Hell bells, many of the politicians are part of that.

Lyndon’s comment was in part, an answer to one of my previous posts with regard to foreign aid and the comment made by Godfrey Bloom od UKIP.
The bongo-bongoland comment.

Well, here something else to ponder.  It’s been in the news a lot the last few weeks with the usual suspects screaming the race and phobia words.
I was going to ignore it as a post thinking it might die out.  It’s been reported that only one illegal took up the offer, and to be honest, I look at this campaign if that’s what it is, and can not help but think.  How pathetic!

Here, take a look at what has now caused upset and false outrage among the left wing bed wetters.  This is an attempt to get illegals out of the country.

Home Office vans telling illegal immigrants to ‘Go Home’ investigated by advertising watchdog after 60 complaints

Billboards caused a storm after touring six London boroughs

Tory ministers insist the campaign worked and want it rolled out nationally

Lib Dems including Nick Clegg dismissed it as a pointless stunt

60 complaints made to Advertising Standards Agency including claims it used the slogan of racist groups

By MATT CHORLEY, MAILONLINE POLITICAL EDITOR

You have to ask yourself, is anybody working FOR this country?
It doesn’t seem so most of the time.  Lyndon is right when he says most folks don’t go along with the lefty BS.  BUT, where are the Lib/Dems and Labour getting their votes from?

It has been suggested that if Cameron faces a hung parliament in the next election, if the conservatives (such as they are) can not grab a majority, then the votes going to UKIP will insure that Labour returns to power.  Oh god help this country or whatever deity may be looking in on the lunacy should they return to power.  I don’t think they have even close to 49% support of the people. But I believe it is in the 30% range last I saw.

Ad vans warning illegal immigrants to ‘go home’ are to be investigated by the advertising watchdog.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has launched a probe after 60 complaints were lodged over the concerns that the ads were ‘reminiscent of slogans used by racist groups to attack immigrants in the past’.

The Home Office is also being investigated after claims that posters boasting of ‘106 arrests last week in your area’ were misleading.

Migrant groups, Labour politicians and unions also reacted angrily to the campaign and dozens of complaints were made to the advertising watchdog.

The ASA has launched now a formal investigation. A spokesman said: ‘Complainants have expressed concerns that the ad, in particular the phrase ‘Go Home’, is offensive and irresponsible because it is reminiscent of slogans used by racist groups to attack immigrants in the past and could incite or exacerbate racial hatred and tensions in multicultural communities.

So out of hundreds of thousands of people, it only takes 60 bleeding hearts on the left to open an investigation?
Have they even bothered to look at the word .... illegal?

However Tory treasury minister Sajid Javid staunchly defended the campaign, which could be rolled out nationwide.

He said: ‘It is a trial and the purpose of the trial is to see what is the result.

‘It is quite right that we are looking at ways to tackle illegal immigration.’

The ASA’s probe is in addition to another investigation by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) into a wave of immigration checks across the country.

The EHRC launched the probe after it was claimed that the spot checks - conducted at transport hubs up and down the country - were being carried out by border officials purely on the basis of ethnicity.

Well I don’t know where EHRC gets their info when it’s clear that the racial group who become illegals are ALL from, oh lets see.
Sweden - Switzerland - Iceland - Lapland? - the USA?- France and Germany and ALL of em are white folks. Right. Those are the people who need to be looked at.  Those might be the folks trying to sneak into Britain.  It wouldn’t be any other ‘ethnic’ group of course.  And certainly none from bongo-bongoland or the mid east or eastern europe specifically bulgaria and romania. Nah.  couldn’t be any of them

#68: Bear With Broccoli

Dude, next time, just buy a Maytag.

Kitchen Bear Eats Up Chinese Leftovers

A black bear went looking for a late-night snack in a west Ketchum [Idaho] house Monday night.

David Edwards said he was awakened about 3 a.m. by his dog barking. Edwards said he walked toward the kitchen where his Irish setter-Lab mix, Stanley, was still barking aggressively. On the way, he passed his wife, Sara, who was asleep on a couch.

“I looked into the kitchen and saw this big, furry animal,” Edwards said.

He realized that it was a bear, on its hind legs with its paws on the stove, licking a cast iron pan that had been used to cook Chinese stir-fry that evening. The bear stood up and looked at him.

“That was the most shocked I’ve ever been,” he said. “I was surprised that he was even there with the dog barking.”

Edwards said his first thought was to get his wife away from the kitchen area. However, he said, “I couldn’t tell her there was a bear in the house because she would have just lost her mind. She gets very upset over spiders.”

But he awakened her and led her into the bedroom, then crept back toward the kitchen. He looked in and saw that the bear was gone. The only sign of his visit was a wide-open kitchen door and a clean pan.

Good dog, Stanley.

looking for alfred the great

My outside guess is they won’t find what we all hope they might.  This won’t as easy, if I can use that word, as finding King Richard.
But hey, what’s life without hope.

If they discover any evidence or even think they found him, that will be an exciting discovery.  The downside of course would mean more tourists crowding the high street.  Yeah, yeah.  I know.  Heck, in my better days I was a tourist crowding places also.  But now I see things thru a different lens.

Search for a Saxon king: Archaeologists hope to find Alfred the Great in an unmarked grave in Winchester

Remains of Alfred the Great are believed to lie in a grave in Winchester

A team of archaeologists have applied for permission to dig in the churchyard of St Bartholomew’s Church

Archaeologists from the University of Winchester believe the task of identifying the Saxon king will be difficult

By SARAH GRIFFITHS

Archaeologists plan to recover the remains of Anglo Saxon king, Alfred the Great, which are believed to lie in an unmarked grave in the city of Winchester.

A team of scientists have applied for permission to dig in the churchyard of St Bartholomew’s Church, where the king is thought to be buried in an unmarked grave.

The plans follow the discovery of Richard III, whose skeleton was found under a Leicester car park.

The rector of St Bartholomew’s, the Reverend Canon Cliff Bannister is working with archaeologists and the team believes they have more evidence to go on than the scientists from Leicester University did when they started trying to identify Richard III.

It is believed Alfred’s skeleton is among a collection of bones in the Winchester churchyard.

It gets a bit tricky however.
One would naturally think that a king of Alfred’s fame and standing would have been buried with much pomp and a large monument would have been built and maintained over the years.  Or a map, something that would say here rests the remains etc. After all, he is the only monarch to have the title of, The Great, before his name.

Katie Tucker, an archaeologist from Winchester University, said: ‘As far as we’re aware there are five skulls plus other bones. The most simple part will be to work out ages, sexes, and put the bones back together.’

‘The problem is, where would we get a comparative sample from? It’s a hell of a lot further to go back to trace a living descendant.’

Archaeologists from the university believe the task of identifying the Saxon king will be more difficult than the analysis of Richard III’s skeleton, as finding a living relative to provide a DNA sample will require research into a much older family trees.

The team will initially use radiocarbon techniques to date the bones and then the search for a living relative will begin if the bones date from the correct period.

I guess the bottom line would be finding a relation if that were possible. But what if the family died out?  In reading stuff, I don’t recall ever reading about a family that claimed any kinship to Alfred.  If you live over here and read about some folks in the news, maybe a duke or some aristocrat or wealthy family, very often they’re happy to inform us of a relationship to past well known figures. But I never heard or read about a family related to this king.
But that’s me.  Maybe someone else has.  Thing is, even now we aren’t hearing from anyone making such a claim.

Alfred successfully defended his kingdom against the Viking attempt at conquest, and by the time of his death had become the dominant ruler in England.

He is the only English monarch to be accorded the epithet ‘the Great’.

Alfred was the first King of the West Saxons to style himself ‘King of the Anglo-Saxons’

Alfred has the reputation of a learned and merciful man who encouraged education and improved his kingdom’s legal system and military structure

help a Mac brother out

Reader can’t make the “more” link work on BMEWS. Not being a Mac user, my suggestions don’t help. Any ideas, all you Mac-daddys?

image

It’s Aliiiiiive!

My newest suggestion is to make sure your browser can run Javascripts, and that Java is running! I know there was this thing a couple month ago, with people shutting off Java for some reason or other.

from an email sent to me ...

“I have never been able to open any of the below the fold things on your page- When I click on them as links nothing happens. If I click on them and direct the link to be opened in a new tab or window it just reloads the page.

I have a Mac and use ICab 2.99 most of the time, I tried but do not like 3.01 I also have but do not use a lot Classilla. They do not make Firefox, Chrome or Safari for my computer to the best of my knowledge- IE is a microsoft program and I do not have any of those on my computer. I do not have any ad blockers and I do not have any script.

Thanks for the reply- though it just might be something to annoy people.

He did not say if the “more” link worked on other web pages or not. All mine does, and it’s the thing on a large post that says “See more below the fold” as if you’re reading a newspaper”, is to reload the page but to show the full post, instead of just the first bunch of lines.

I had suggested checking his browser settings, and checking his ad blocker settings, to make sure that a web page had the ability to open a new page or to refresh the main page on demand. I figured that would do it. Guess not.

So, any good ideas? Has anyone else had this issue before?? I remember that some people had problems with pictures in posts hiding some of the text, in the past. I’m pretty sure I’ve fixed that. And there was a problem with the log-in once. And some folks have a bit of a problem with the registration concept sometimes (it isn’t a link, you actually sit down and write me an email. Give user name, screen name, password, and I register you). So problems do occur here once in a while, and once in a while I have to reach out to the members and ask for their help.

Help! Help!

This is the link he’s talking about:

Get your drone hunting license!

This is too good!

Deer Trail, a small Colorado town, is considering an ordinance that would allow its residents to hunt for federal drones and shoot them down.

The ordinance states, “the Town of Deer Trail shall issue a reward of $100 to any shooter who presents a valid hunting license and the following identifiable parts of an unmanned aerial vehicle whose markings and configuration are consistent with those used on any similar craft known to be owned or operated by the United States federal government.”

If passed by the town board, Deer Trail would charge $25 for drone hunting licenses and they would be valid for one year.

The Feds and Obama better wake up. The country is in almost total revolt over ObamaCare, drones, NSA spying, Moochelle’s school lunches, etc.

Such A Coincidence

Massive Fire Shuts Down Top Kenya Airport

15 years to the day from the 1998 US embassy bombings there that killed 200

image

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenyan authorities ordered the temporary closing on Wednesday of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi after a huge fire broke out and raged for four hours, officials and witnesses said. The blaze spread to the international arrivals area, bringing East Africa’s busiest airport to a standstill and turning parts of it into charred ruins.

By mid-afternoon, Michael Kamau, a senior government transport official, told reporters that the airport had been partially reopened for domestic and cargo flights, but international traffic was still suspended. Airport authorities planned to convert another part of the facility to a temporary terminal for international flights, he said.

The airport handles 16,000 passengers a day, officials said, and is a vital link for Kenya’s cut flower export business — an important source of foreign currency along with the country’s tourism trade on beaches and in game reserves, and the exportation of tea.

The fire started at around 5 a.m. on Wednesday, when many flights to and from Europe and elsewhere were scheduled.

Wednesday, Aug. 7, is the anniversary of the 1998 coordinated bombings of United States Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, attacks that killed more than 200 people.

But Kenya’s antiterror police boss, Boniface Mwaniki, told The A.P. that he wanted to wait for the fire to be extinguished before making a judgment about whether terrorism had been involved. Kenya is a key Western ally, abutting troubled areas of neighboring Somalia.

...

The fire lasted several hours, Ms. Price, 32, said in a telephone interview, and appeared to have caused major damage. “It looked like it would be hard to repair,” she said.

Nothing to see here, move along, I’m sure.

Fatberg

Cleaning Out Clogged Arteries

image

And you’re worried about your own cholesterol and plaque? London just dislodged a blob of fat the size of a bus.

Britain’s biggest ever ‘fatberg’ has been removed from a London sewer.

The bus-sized lump of wrongly-flushed festering food fat mixed with wet wipes formed in drains under London Road in Kingston, Surrey.

Had it not been removed it could have led to sewage flooding many homes, streets and businesses in the leafy London suburb.

Gordon Hailwood, waste contracts supervisor for Thames Water said: “While we’ve removed greater volumes of fat from under central London in the past, we’ve never seen a single, congealed lump of lard this big clogging our sewers before.

“Given we’ve got the biggest sewers and this is the biggest fatberg we’ve encountered, we reckon it has to be the biggest such berg in British history.

“The sewer was almost completely clogged with over 15 tonnes of fat. If we hadn’t discovered it in time, raw sewage could have started spurting out of manholes across the whole of Kingston.

“It was so big it damaged the sewer and repairs will take up to six weeks.

“Homes and businesses need to change their ways, when it comes to fat and wipes, please remember: ‘Bin it – don’t block it.’”

The blockage was discovered after residents in nearby flats complained that they couldn’t flush their toilets.

The thing just goes on and on and on. I have no idea how they filmed it. Maybe they hooked a camera to some robo-rat or something. Yuck.

3 cheers and 3 cheers more for , Mr. Godfrey Bloom who refuses political correctness. UKIP

Rest Not So In Peace, freedom of speech.

All manner of things bug me. What else is new?  But one of the things that really makes me see red is all this false “outrage” some people claim to feel. And some who call themselves conservatives are not adverse to joining with the bleeding heart bed- wetters of the left in expressing themselves thus on the issue of race.  Even if it isn’t exactly a race issue.  Sometimes it’s a country or group of countries and a population that have shown themselves prone to the kind of comment made and recorded by a man I never heard of before today.

He is Godfrey Bloom and I doubt I’ll ever hear of him again and you won’t either.
However, his name should be noted and remembered because he committed a crime so large, so mean, so raaaaaaacist, that his recorded comment was sent to a newspaper called the Guardian.  Think Trotsky and Reds bmews.
So you know already that Mr. Bloom is an okay guy and said nothing that should remove him from the party, that being UKIP.  A threat to the Tories as their numbers are growing, and some conservatives have left the Tory Party and have joined UKIP.
But Mr. Bloom made a boo-boo of speech.  Poor man did not think before he spoke, which is as you all know, an urgent prerequisite in these awful days of politically correct speech as well as thought.
It comes down to, just what the heck is racist and what is sexist or phobic?  I guess it’s whatever someone wants it to be, and is generally used to score points with some voters and to silence anyone on the right.  That’s because nobody on the right has any valid points and we are all bigoted and racist and so therefore have no right to an opinion or if we do then we mustn’t say it out loud else we might “outrage” and “offend” someone, somewhere.

Well, Mr. Bloom apparently caused a great deal of (bogus) outrage by referring to some countries as, “bongo-bongo land”.
He was not the first politician to use that term btw.

In April a leaked email from Mr Bloom suggested he was concerned about excessive ‘political correctness’ among new recruits to UKIP.

Two months ago UKIP leader Nigel Farage ensured an Italian MEP was expelled from UKIP’s European alliance for saying a black minister in Italy was part of a ‘government of bongo bongo’ who would want to impose ‘tribal traditions’, and would be better suited as a housekeeper.

‘If I’ve offended anybody in bongo bongo land I’ll write to the ambassador’: UKIP MEP dismisses row over foreign aid outburst

Godfrey Bloom rebuked by party for comments at meeting with supporters
Said foreign aid used ‘to buy Ray-Ban sunglasses’ and Paris apartments
Today he stood by his remarks and denied they were racist
Accused David Cameron of picking taxpayers pockets for charity
UKIP tell him not to repeat the phrase but say foreign aid must be debated

By TIM SHIPMAN, DEPUTY POLITICAL EDITOR and MATT CHORLEY

A senior UKIP politician has been rebuked after telling activists that Britain should not be sending aid to ‘bongo bongo land’.

http://bcove.me/4vghx72p

Godfrey Bloom, a UKIP member of the European Parliament, suggested foreigners used aid to ‘buy Ray-Ban sunglasses’ and ‘apartments in Paris’.

As a political storm grew over the remarks, he remained defiant, insisting he was standing up for ‘ordinary people’.

But today UKIP chairman Steve Crowther said: ‘We are asking Godfrey not to use this phrase again as it might be considered disparaging by members from other countries.

‘However, foreign aid is an extremely important debate that needs wider discussion.’

Mr Bloom’s remarks emerged in the week his party is due to publish its list of approved candidates for next year’s European elections – at which the party hopes to get the biggest share of the vote.

Asked what he would do if he was reprimanded, Mr Bloom told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: ‘I’d say “Righto, sorry, sorry everybody”.

‘If I’ve offended anybody in bongo bongo land I shall write to the ambassador at the Court of St James’s and apologise to him personally.’

In the recording leaked to The Guardian he says: ‘How we can possibly be giving a billion pounds a month when we’re in this sort of debt to bongo bongo land is completely beyond me.

‘To buy Ray-Ban sunglasses, apartments in Paris, Ferraris and all the rest of it that goes with most of the foreign aid. F18s for Pakistan. We need a new squadron of F18s. Who’s got the squadrons? Pakistan, where we send the money.’

Last night a UKIP spokesman said Mr Bloom’s remarks were being ‘discussed right at the very highest level of the party’ while sources close to Mr Farage confirmed disciplinary action against Mr Bloom was being considered.

Here’s where it all begins folks.  In the class rooms of the world, ruled by who?
Give me the kiddies is the old saying.

Laura Pidcock, from campaign group Show Racism the Red Card, said: ‘What I can tell you is that in the classrooms that I visit as an anti-racism education worker, these crude stereotypes that see Britain as a civilised place and overseas as tribal is an extremely homogenising sentiment and I think it’s incredibly damaging.

no order, little law and no justice.

I guess this could be reasonably considered the Brit answer to law and order.
No order, little law and no justice.

I’ll bet there’s more than one police office who has already been in service for a long time but too short of retirement thinking, why the hell did I ever pick this job as a career move.

I guess it’s just my age and that of many of our readers here.  I don’t understand these things and I’ll guess you might not either.  There are some things that truly are black and white.  Or there was once upon a time when logic counted for something.

Having said all that, the headline is just a tad misleading.  There’s a reason the judge ruled that way, but hell.  The guy confessed to cops and then ran.
What else could he be but guilty?  Ah ... a case for Hercule Poirot.

Or maybe Inspector Clouseau?

Take a look.

‘Career criminal’ walks free after two-month manhunt because his ‘wanted’ picture contaminated evidence

· Anthony Morrison, 32, faced robbery charges over £20,000 Asda ATM raid

· But prosecutors presented no evidence saying police mugshot had ‘contaminated identification by witnesses’

By Rosie Taylor

A criminal who was hauled to court to face robbery charges after a two-month manhunt has walked free after a judge ruled the ‘wanted’ picture of him issued by police had contaminated evidence.

Detectives had released a mugshot of career criminal Anthony Morrison, 32, when he was wanting for questioning over a £20,000 robbery at an Adsa supermarket.
But witnesses due to testify against him at his trial told police they recognised his face after seeing the wanted picture - despite all the robbers wearing balaclavas during the raid.

On the first day of the planned trial, prosecutors said there was ‘huge potential for contamination’ in the evidence against him.
Apart from the eyewitnesses, whose identification of Morrison was ‘contaminated’, the only other evidence was that his DNA was found on a distinctive jacket linked to the robbery.

But prosecutors said there was no evidence that Morrison was wearing the jacket at the time of the attack, and he could have worn it previously.
Simon Parry, prosecuting told Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court that he would offer no evidence against Morrison, adding: ‘Suspicion isn’t enough.’

Morrison, who had previously been jailed for six years for conspiracy to rob, was suspected of being one of four men armed with a sledgehammer and handgun who had attacked security guards filling ATM machines at Asda in Oldham, Greater Manchester.

One of the guards was punched twice in the face during the raid in 2011, while another heard one of the robbers shout ‘Just shoot him’.
The thieves made off with a cash box containing £20,000. Suspects Jason Butterworth, 33, and Michael Ford, 34, were arrested but Morrison fled to Spain in December 2011.

The following July he called police from Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam to say he wanted to give himself up.

Arrangements were made for him to board an aircraft to Manchester because officers were legally unable to go to Holland to escort him back to Britain.

Morrison agreed to be arrested by officers when he arrived at Manchester Airport but when he touched down at Terminal One from his EasyJet flight he fled before he got to passport control.

Read the rest of this. Interesting.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
