Quote Of The Day

Did you know that the US Constitution protects your right to travel from state to state but traveling inside a state can be blocked by the government at any time?

“Although the right to interstate travel is clearly established by our jurisprudence, the United States Supreme Court has not decided the question of whether the Constitution protects a right to intrastate travel.”

-- U.S. District Judge Mary Ann Vial Lemmon, in a ruling against Tracy and Dorothy Dickerson who filed a lawsuit after they were stopped from crossing the Mississippi River Bridge to escape the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

"Gift to Britain”? “Brave border guards”? Is this bunch full of s**t or what? If Jimmy Carter hadn’t been President and let them get away with this once, we wouldn’t have to put up with this crap? If any of you out there has a Time Machine™ could you please go back to November 1976 and stuff some ballots with votes for Jerry Ford? Please!

Iran To Free UK Captives
(SKY NEWS) - 15:31, Wednesday April 04, 2007

imageimageIran is freeing the 15 UK sailors and marines taken captive in the Shatt al Arab waterway 13 days ago as a “gift” to Britain. Some have been shown on Iranian TV speaking to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejadk at his palace in the capital Tehran.

Their release was announced by the president who said they would be handed over to the British embassy. He said he had pardoned the sailors as a gift to the British people and to mark the birthday of Islam’s Prophet Mohammed and Easter.

A Downing Street spokeswoman said: “We welcome what the President has said about the release of our 15 personnel. “We are now establishing exactly what this means in terms of the method and timing of their release.”

President Ahmadinejad announced the Britons’ release after awarding medals to the “brave” border guards who had arrested them. “I would like to thank the Iranian coast guard for courgeously defending our Iranian territorial waters,” he said.

He then pinned medals on the chests of three Coast Guard officers. The ceremony was performed during a press conference broadcast around the world. The controversial leader said he was “saddened” that Britain had violated Iranian waters.

He also accused the Government of concealing the truth about the affair and the EU of being too quick to condemn Iran. “Is this the kind of attitude, manner that we want to run Europe - this is the European Union - without investigating they announce a certain stance.

Give it to Her

PawPaw is not amused.

I see that Harry Reid is calling for Congress to cut funding for the Iraqi war. No funds means no war. Speaker Pelosi is treating with Syria. The Democrats are doing everything they can to get us out of Iraq.

but, he has an interesting solution to the problem:

If I were President Bush, I’d solve it easily. I’d talk to every member of my cabinet, request their resignations and get a firm commitment from them that they wouldn’t re-enter government service for one year. Then I’d get Dick Cheney to write the same letter, then I’d call Nancy Pelosi and tell her, “You got it. It’s all yours. I’m resigning effective tomorrow at noon and you’re going to be the President.”

“But Mr. President, what do you mean?” Pelosi asks.

“It’s simple, darlin. You’re so goddamn smart, you figure it out. Cheney and I are going fishing, then we’re going to watch you solve this crisis that you’ve been so vocal about. It’s all yours.”

In one fell swoop, Bush would have solved a number of problems, not the least being the wondering about the first female president. Pelosi wouldn’t be term limited, so she could run for re-election. Then, with a Democratic Congress and a Democratic President, we could watch them solve all the worlds problems.

It’d be great.

Heh.  cool grin

“We’re not going to do anything to limit funding or cut off funds.”

-- Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., November 30, 2006 (CNN)

“Congress has a responsibility to end a war that is opposed by the American people and is undermining our national security. By ending funding for the President’s failed Iraq policy, our bill requires the President to safely redeploy our troops from Iraq.”

-- Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., April 2, 2007 (SENATE PRESS RELEASE)

The World Is Going Insane, Part XXVII

Once again, I am speechless. With the help of lawyers, the inmates are truly in charge of the asylum ... and they’re getting paid well for it. I just don’t understand where this is going.

In case you missed the big party in Seattle back in 1999, thousands of mad hatter protesters rampaged through the streets of Seattle protesting during a meeting of the World Trade Organization (WTO). They clogged the city streets, broke into shops and generally made a mess of the town before dozens of them were carted off to jail.

Now, seven years later with the assistance of the ACLU, the protesters who were arrested have won a $1 million lawsuit. Let me repeat that: they are being paid $1 million for getting arrested. If anybody out there can tell how this is happening in a modern, civilized country under a rule of law, I’d sure like to know because I want to organize a protest of my own and get paid off too.

Key quote below: “Nothing is going to replace the time spent in jail and the lost right to protest WTO but I feel good about the settlement because it shows the city and the police are willing to accept some changes in their training and we hope the police follow through and won’t do this again.”

Unbelievable. Simply unbelievable ....

Seattle To Pay WTO Protesters $1 Million
(SEATTLE TIMES) - Monday, April 2, 2007

imageimageThe city of Seattle will pay $1 million to WTO protesters who were arrested in Westlake Park seven years ago and will clear their records, in a settlement announced today.

The money will cover the plaintiffs’ legal fees, with the rest divided among 160 protesters, who will get roughly $3,000 to $10,000 per person, said Mike Withey, their attorney.

“We think the cash settlement does send a message that what Seattle did was wrong and we shouldn’t have been denied our constitutional rights,” said Ken Hankin, a Boeing engineer and one of the arrested protesters.

The $1 million will come from the city’s insurer, not taxpayers, Withey said. The city has already paid $800,000 to settle multiple claims involving police misconduct during the WTO protests.

Withey said today’s announcement “closes a chapter in Seattle history” because it marks the last of the legal cases stemming from protests and arrests involving 1999 World Trade Organization meeting in Seattle.

imageimageSeattle police officers will also receive training on why the department lacked probable cause for mass arrests, Withey added.

“Nothing is going to replace the time spent in jail and the lost right to protest WTO,” Hankin added. “But I feel good about the settlement because it shows the city and the police are willing to accept some changes in their training, and we hope the police follow through and won’t do this again.”

A federal jury ruled in January that the city was liable for unlawful arrests of the protesters. The jury also determined that the arrests did not violate the protesters’ free-speech rights because they were not made as a result of a city policy.

City Attorney Tom Carr could not be reached for comment on the settlement.

Through The Looking Glass

image

Barred spiral galaxy NGC 1365 is truly a majestic island universe some 200,000 light-years across. Located a mere 60 million light-years away toward the chemical constellation Fornax, NGC 1365 is a dominant member of the well-studied Fornax galaxy cluster. This impressively sharp color image shows intense star forming regions at the ends of the bar and along the spiral arms, as well as details of dust lanes cutting across the galaxy’s bright core. At the core lies a supermassive black hole. Astronomers think NGC 1365’s prominent bar plays a crucial role in the galaxy’s evolution, drawing gas and dust into a star-forming maelstrom and ultimately feeding material into the central black hole.

Lost!

Yes, I’m lost again and over CONUS and I’m here today to satisfy all those whining, bitching complainers who said there were no B-52’s at Offut AFB yesterday (you know who you are). Hell, everyone knows “Dr. Strangelove” was filmed there and we all saw that movie and saw the B-52’s taking off and surely Hollyweird wouldn’t exaggerate something as important as that would they?

So today we are over a USAF base that DEFINITELY has BUFF’s sitting on it. I count 16 at least on the ground below. Are you weiners satisfied now? The picture below is one of those monsters sucking up some Premium High Octane joy juice from a KC-135R over Afghanistan recently. That’s all the hints you Zoomies get today. Tough shit. Where am I?

Roanoke Times Update

The story aired on CNN’s Paula Zahn show Monday night.

Phillip VanCleave, the president of the Virginia Citizens Defense League, was able to help them find some folks that were damaged by this story.  I think they made the point well.

Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
