what the papers and the people are saying, and not all of it is nice. can’t blame the people here

Here we are again. By which I mean, with all the problems this country has, and many are self inflicted, here comes Washington, USA warning Brits to do as they (DC) says.  Oh ok. Suggests but it ends as badly.

There are folks here who are entirely fed up with the EU and the laws and the rules that seem to override UK laws. That isn’t new. And they have just cause.
But now the morning papers greet them with yet more and now more robust advice.

Now how stupid is that?  The USA won’t do business with the UK if these good folks quit the EU?  I am not a whiz at economics but I don’t see that.
What?  McDees and Starbucks and god alone know what other American companies are gonna shut their doors?  Skippy is gonna stop shipping their creamy peanut butter? Google won’t take advertising from UK firms?  Rubbish. It bothers me that my country (the leadership that is and they aren’t the whole country), are butting in again on a very sorry subject for Brits.

Britain could miss out on billions of pounds of U.S. investment if it leaves the EU, Obama officials warn

Europe and U.S. set to negotiate one biggest bilateral trade deals ever
EU said it will be worth more than £400 to every European household
Obama officials have warned UK could miss out on money if it exits Europe
Said Washington unlikely to want to negotiate separate deal with UK

By Tim Shipman

Britain risks losing out on £10billion a year in trade deals if the UK withdraws from the European Union, the Obama administration has warned.

US officials have told their British counterparts that a vote to leave would exclude the UK from a transatlantic free trade deal which leaders hope to thrash out later this year.

American diplomats believe it will be very difficult to get the so-called Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership – which could generate hundreds of billions of pounds worth of trade – through the US Senate.

In a warning shot, they have made clear they would be very unlikely to strike a separate deal with Britain if the UK votes to quit the EU.

Negotiations are due to start within weeks and David Cameron hopes to give it a boost when he hosts the G8 summit in Northern Ireland next week.

But US officials have told the Mail that many US Congressmen, keen to protect local industries from competition from Europe, are suspicious of the plans.

Are we blackmailing an ally at the same time their troops are bleeding alongside ours in some god forsaken hell hole?  That’s the way it looks to my jaundiced eye.

Here’s what some disgruntled Brits are saying.

Sublime threats from a lightweight president. I think the people of the United States do not care one way or the other. Whilst we in Britain care very much about being ruled by a un democratic power. If you like it so much Mr Obama apply to join you will regret it though.

Thank you, but since your ‘powerful economy’ is up to its neck in Chinese owned debt and is set to be savaged by $85bn worth of cuts (thanks to your insipid and clueless leadership), we have to respectfully decline your country’s “friendly advice” on the grounds that it is a big steaming pile of the brown stuff...-

Economic illiteracy seems to be rampant among KIPPERS, the US debt to China is about 8% of its total commitment. Now have a guess who the UK owes half a trillion pounds to and consider why the US administration, regardless of who runs it wants to see the country remain solvent.

I’m a Eurosceptic as anyone, but let us set what Dave changes. If he saves the UK £billions, then I’ll vote yes, if not UKIP for me. Our ‘special relationship with the US is not about $’s it’s about sharing Intelligence which is worth far more that £10billion.

A trade deal should have nothing to do with other political considerations, unfortunately it does. In this case it means it is in America’s interest to have the UK in the EU, that does not mean that it is in the UK’s interest, Whether the UK votes to stay in the EU or not will not be helped by Obama inferring blackmail if we don’t. UK’s 2012 trade with the USA balanced out, imports and exports being at just over 54 billion. The UK became a great country due to world trade. Trading with the rest of the world, particularly the emerging new economic powers, plus the saving of coming out of the EU, will be of far more benefit to the UK who has a massive deficit with Europe. or the supposedly extra trade with the US this trade deal will bring.

Would Americans join a political union with all the Americas, with not a directly elected president, who is not an American citizen, who parliament is in say, Uruguay, and whose laws must be enforced, but without any representation, and finally pay through the nose for the privilege? No? Thought not. So why expect us to want that ‘union’.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
