What If
What if Spitzer doesn’t resign? After all, he isn’t under indictment. The legal paperwork that surfaced this afternoon was merely a complaint. And he wasn’t even named in that complaint. Sure, they likely have him dead to rights ... phone records, cash flow, security cameras at the hotel, etc. But look at the precedents. Or should I say The Presidents? Clinton didn’t resign over lying under oath. Down on the bayou William Jefferson isn’t going anywhere, even after being snagged with $90,000 worth of marked bills in the ice box. These are Democrats folks ... born to rule. Besides, to paraphrase Leona Helmsley, laws are for the little people.
Does NY even have impeachment laws on the books? Or rules about No Confidence Votes, or Recall Votes? Because if they don’t, they can’t write them now and apply them to him. We don’t do Ex Post Facto in this country. Even if an actual charge comes down and Spitzer is found guilty of it, if he can cut a deal he won’t see a day in prison. Gosh, he might loose his law license. Who cares? He’s not a lawyer; he’s the Governor.
Paris Hilton did how much time in jail? How many DUIs etc was Lindsey Lohan guilty of and she served how much time? 74 minutes! How long was Nicolle Richie behind bars ... 4 days? They’re all rich ... and so is Spitzer. And rich people get special treatment. Ain’t right, but that’s how it is. And Johns don’t do jailtime anyway. They just pay a fat fine.
If he can cop to a lesser charge, if charges are ever even brought - and that could be in doubt - and see to it that his penalty is all in cash money - he can right on being NY’s Most Despised Governor. It’s not like the whole state didn’t hate him already. It’s not like this situation is going to cause the suits up in Albany to do any less work. They’re all at loggerheads and have been for months, getting just about nothing done and drawing fat paychecks.
Sure, this is a nasty scandal. Sure, the level of hypocracy is staggering. Mr. Law & Order State Attorney General, gets elected to run the state on a platform of Ethics Reform, and turns out to be a dirtbag. Now you expect him to suddenly develop honor, decency, and bow out from a sense of shame? Don’t bet the farm people. He’s a modern Democrat. Don’t bet the farm.
