WEEKEND WOMEN

Some weeks ago I decided we should have classy ladies from the past and some from the present. One reason being that women are a joy to look at and usually if you’re a straight male, gape at open mouthed in wonder and awe.  Usually, the business that produces these eye catching wonders of nature, is show business.  Lets face it folks, it attracts pretty women.  It’s kinda like Willie Sutton when asked why he robbed banks answered, ‘because that’s where the money is’.  Well, when looking for beautiful women, where else to go but show biz.  It attracts em like bees to honey.

All of the ladies of course are in their prime which is how I like to remember them.  I can only do this directed by my own taste naturally, and what appeals to me.  Which doesn’t mean that if I haven’t gotten to one of your favorites I’ve ignored em.  I found since starting this that is isn’t always as easy as I thought it could be, even with the net.  But I like doing it and in many cases it brings back some memories.

One area of much pleasure and interest (to me) are the really olde photos going back to the late 1890s to about 1910.  I’m still hunting for more but that isn’t proving too easy because there’s much that isn’t of very good quality or photos of newspaper photos etc.  There’s another category much ignored, maybe because there’s so little around.  And that’s older women who somehow have managed to still retain ‘IT.’ Now that is a hard find.
Mae West somehow still managed it past 50 even though she was overweight. In fact, she was almost always overweight by our standards but darn if she wasn’t one beautiful woman.  I suppose personality also has a role in that where she was concerned.

And so on to this edition of Weekend Women.  I admit I stole the name from Kim, but that was only because I can’t think of a snappier or better name.

RITA HAYWORTH
Margarita Carmen Cansino was born in New York on October 17, 1918.
Sad to think with her talent and looks her life turned so sad.  What is it about women like this who almost always seem to choose the wrong men in their lives. Not once, but twice and thrice.  But I still love this beauty. This is how I remember her.

What a darn shame so many people recall Lucille Ball only from wacky comedies and especially her TV show.  She was a dancer in a chorus line way back before she became ‘Lucy.’ And boy oh boy what a face and figure.  Like to die for and no foolin. And what a talent she was.

A very long time ago I happen to see a photo in a very old magazine.  It was a candid shot of Lucille Ball at a beach somewhere in So. Calif.
No stage makeup or posed photograph.  The photographer was either just lucky or else perhaps he was stalking her. Anyway, it was a great shot and I’ve been hunting it for years and can’t find it.  It really shows her very natural beauty.  WOW. What a dame! A class act.

Some of you won’t even know who this lady is.  But I remember her cos I was around to see her 50 years ago.  She was a MAJOR name once upon a time.

MITZI GAYNOR

In the 1950s, several movie actresses who originally had not aspired to be glamour girls found it expedient to be photographed in pin-up poses. Some, like Shirley Jones, dipped a toe in the water cautiously. Mitzi Gaynor jumped in the deep end. Like Betty Grable, Mitzi had a pleasant face of no more than ordinary prettiness and exceptionally good legs. Mitzi also had a sexy body. She was well equipped to be a pin-up.

Mitzi was born Francesca Marlene von Gerber in 1931. Her father was a Hungarian musician and her mother a ballroom dancer. Mitzi’s parents toured the United States, giving performances in the evening and giving Mitzi dancing lessons by day. Apparently Mitzi was an accomplished dancer by the age of eleven. During her mid-teens, Edwin Lester signed her to dance with the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera. Mitzi appeared in revivals of musicals like “The Great Waltz” and “Roberta”

Almost there.  One more below the fold.  Yes I know, I did her recently. BUT .... she appeared this week in another new gown and so that’s reason enough to include her again.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
