today’s distraction story
Today’s distraction story, for those burned out by the news and the endless clown show in DC, is the big over-reaction to a commercial for an exercise bicycle. A Peloton, ooh. Extra spendy. Admittedly, the ad is a bit creepy, as the already skinny wife gets one for Christmas, then spends an entire year riding this high end bit of sweat equipment in front of the designer window in their oh-so-tony swanky home, while taking a series of video selfies in which she always seems a bit frightened. And a year later, she hasn’t lost an ounce or gained a gram’s worth of muscle definition, or become super confident or anything, but she’s just oh so super super grateful to hubby for changing her life, and looks at him with a combination look of adoration and please-don’t-beat-me.
And here are your links, if you haven’t seen the thing yet 20 times. The ad, and one of the early critical essays on it. And the absolute best mockery of it, featuring a similar looking woman with a far more realistic attitude making the same kind of video.

It’s not the husband’s fault that his wife has crazy eyes that make her look like she’s being held hostage for the duration of the commercial.
Indeed, this is the tale of a thoughtful husband whose intentions have been taken totally out of context and who deserved a much better thank you from his ungrateful wife.
That being said, the parenting skills in the commercial are atrocious. The couple’s poor young daughter has to open her Christmas gifts alone at the edge of the camera frame while her parents watch a progress video. That’s where the outrage should be.
