The Losing Team

There is a very good reason why Article II, Section 2 of the US Constitution states the following: “The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States, when called into the actual Service of the United States.” The reason is simple - someone has to make the decisions and manage the course of war in our nation’s defense.

The key word there is “someone”. Not some damn committee and not some damn group of bloviating political hacks. And especially not 540 contentious, argumentative jerks from all over the country. The 540 members of the House and Senate are there to LEGISLATE. Get it? That means they pass laws, i.e., “legislate.” That is why they are called the LEGISLATIVE BRANCH of our government.

The President, on the other hand, is charged with the task of EXECUTING the will of the people, including the defense of ALL the people from enemies who intend to do us harm. That is why his office is called the EXECUTIVE BRANCH of our government. That is also why he is given full command and control of the military as Commander In Chief of ALL armed forces.

Why am I telling you something you should already know? Because the new Congress is planning on usurping the powers of the President and are now going to start managing the military, setting timetables and troop strengths. Even worse, they are using the media to do it, revealing to our enemies all of their plans for surrender and withdrawal from the fight.

The question is not whether the war is being mismanaged or even whether we should be fighting to begin with. The fact is we are in a war and if things aren’t going as well as we would expect, the last thing we need to do is turn the whole management of the military over to 540 people who usually take at least six months to finally come to an agreement on anything! Management by committee is a recipe for disaster!

America, how does it feel to finally be on the losing team? There will be no “peace with honor” this time. There will be no negotiated peace settlement with the terrorists in the Middle East. No, all there will be this time is a plain white flag raised above the Capitol ... and the eternal shame of a nation that used to be great ...

Pelosi, Reid Urge Bush To Begin Iraq Pullout
President Considering Three ‘Surge’ Options
(WASHINGTON POST) - Saturday, January 6, 2007

imageimageHouse Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid declared yesterday that “it is time to bring the war to a close” and warned President Bush that sending more U.S. troops to Iraq would be unacceptable to the Democratic majorities that have just taken over Congress.

Directly challenging Bush’s wartime leadership on their second day in charge on Capitol Hill, Democrats Pelosi (Calif.) and Reid (Nev.) sent Bush a letter suggesting that, instead of starting a short-term escalation, he begin a phased withdrawal of U.S. forces in the next four to six months. The mission of remaining troops, they said, should be shifted away from combat toward more training, logistics and counterterrorism.

The newly ascendant Democrats are trying to preempt the president before he announces his new strategy. As he prepares for a nationally televised address next week, officials said, Bush is considering three main options to bolster U.S. forces in Iraq: a relatively modest deployment of fewer than 4,000 additional troops, a middle-ground alternative involving about 9,000 and, the most aggressive idea, flowing 20,000 more troops into the country.

In a speech today unveiling his own revised security plan, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is expected to publicly welcome additional U.S. troops, a condition requested by the Bush administration. Maliki’s cooperation is pivotal to Bush’s own efforts. Bush told Maliki in a videoconference Thursday that the United States is willing to help but that Maliki has to deliver along the way, U.S. officials said.

In preparation for the shift in strategy, Bush reshuffled his national security leadership team yesterday. He replaced the top two generals running the Iraq war, named a new Army chief of staff, moved his intelligence director over to the State Department and put a veteran officer in charge of intelligence. Officials have said he also plans to move his ambassador in Baghdad to the United Nations and replace him with a veteran diplomat.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
