Our Political Trajectory

A Jim T, a buddy from Texas recently sent me a bit about how the Bergdahl prisoner swap was an impeachable offense.  I thought about it for a minute and decided it didn’t matter if it was an impeachable offense or not.  Nothing is going to happen.

Right now, there is just barely enough organized opposition to hold back, not stop, some of Obama’s insanity.

Right now, our country and our politicians are severely lacking in will. 

That sounds a lot like Fascist rhetoric from the early 1930’s.

We all have an idea of what’s right and it’s obvious that there’s a lot of wrong out there these days.  We’re all watching our Federal Government stumble in a series of illegal/political screw ups from Benghazi to the IRS.  There’s plenty already known to take out large parts of the Obama admin, yet nothing is happening.

Unless you almost literally have a picture of Obama with a smoking gun in his hand and a dead body on the floor, he’s not going to get impeached for anything.  We already have a demonstrable and probably indictable IRS scandal, yet no one is doing jack diddly to actually bring any sort of court cases forward.  It’s a slow motion clusterf*ck.

The scariest part is that along with this horrendous Liberal spasm we’ve been on is the lack of a well organized opposition. 

Another problem is that the coming generation of “conservative” politicians won’t want to let go of the surveillance and control system begun under Bush Jr. and fine tuned under Obama.  Actually, it would be more honest to say that it got huge boosts from Bush2 and Obama.  Does anyone besides me remember ECHELON and CARNIVORE?  It’s been in the works for a while.

It’s a system overlapping federal, state and local governments.  The NSA, FBI and whoever covers overall filtering of the internet and cellphones while local cops play with license plate scanners and facial recognition on the street.  Add in a couple of drones, whatever the latest state of Posse Comitatus is (or isn’t) and you’ve got a recipe for a power mad dictatorship of some sort.  We have some very dangerous forces loose in the world and I’m not sure they’re very well contained. 

Right now, I have trouble with EITHER side of the political spectrum in control of that kind of power.  The technology cannot be unlearned, so the question is how will we establish oversight and control to minimize the negative aspects? 

I don’t care if you agree with me, but I want to hear your ideas on solutions, either broad or specific.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:

1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere

It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.
