Like A Sore Thumb

This ought to be easy ...

FRANKLIN TWP. — A manhunt is in progress in the area of Walmart Plaza near Clinton (New Jersey).

According to unconfirmed emergency radio broadcasts, two men attempted some kind of crime at the ShopRite. They fled into the woods near the Cracker Barrel.

Police have apprehended one of the men, but the other, described as a 30-year-old, 5-foot-9 African-American man in a blue shirt, is still being sought.

A State Police helicopter is searching from the air and the Readington police are bringing their dog so they can retrace the steps of the fugitives and see if they dropped anything.

Police are trying to control access to the area, which includes closing the Landsdown Trail, which leads from that area into Clinton.

There might be another black guy or two in town, maybe in uniform coming off shift from the Edna Mahan women’s correctional institute across the street from Walmart. Maybe not; most of the guards there are women.

... this is right around the corner from our place, hardly more than half a mile away. The Landsdown Trail is a local wooded jogging path that once upon a time was the railroad siding up into downtown Clinton.

These two blew it. They never got as far as the end of the parking lot, where the exit road is only yards from the entrance ramp for the highway. Hah, maybe they turned right instead of left and and went down to the dead end by the river, which, coincidentally, is where the Landsdown Trail cuts across.

OTOH, the westbound entrance for the highway is ... hardly more than yards away from where I’m typing right now. And I’m on my way out to go pick up dinner. Think maybe I’ll take my pocket alligator.

Why such a huge turnout by all the King’s horses and all the King’s men? I mean, come on, we had MRAPS and helicopters and the K-9 dogs and stuff. Well, the last time the cops had a situation there, it turned out pretty badly ...

The massive manhunt which followed an attempted credit card fraud by two men at the ShopRite in Franklin Township Monday afternoon calls to mind a similar manhunt in the same area 15 years ago which ended in the police shooting a man.

What began as a routine motor-vehicle stop around 3:45 a.m. Aug. 18, 2000 led to the death of one man, the arrest of four others and a narrow escape for a police officer. Cory Kubinak, then a Clinton patrolman, stopped a car containing five men from Allentown, Pa. on Route 513 (Pittstown Road) near Walmart Plaza. That’s where the ShopRite is.

When the driver, Andre O. Warren, 22, was unable to produce any type of identification, Kubinak asked him to step from the vehicle. As the officer spoke with Warren, a passenger got out of the vehicle and fired “a number” of shots at the patrolman, officials said at the time.

The possibility that one of the men involved in this week’s incident had a gun added urgency to the situation and may have been the reason for the large police response.
