Got Enough Gun?

The Bison Bull .45-70 Revolver

image

The .45-70 cartridges pictured are over 2 1/2 inches long. This pistol is beyond huge!

The Bison Bull is a .45-70 Gov’t six-shot, single-action revolver proudly made in the U.S.A. This hearty fistful hearkens back to those thrilling days of yesteryear when great herds of American Bison freely roamed across the prairies and plains of the Old West. Sporting a 10” octagonal, custom Badger barrel and fully-adjustable, renowned Millett rear sights, the “Bison Bull” also has integral scope mounts which allows it to be readily scoped for long-distance hunting. The frame is manganese bronze while the cylinder and barrel are of 4140 chrome-moly steel. All-American materials assure the highest quality, exceptional reliability, and unerring accuracy. The “Bison Bull” is so well made that it carries a lifetime guarantee. Contact: Super Six Classic, LLC, 635 Hilltop Trail W., Ft. That is one enormous pistol!

I gather that this company split apart a few years back, with one of the original partners, Gene Phelps, making his own version of the pistol out of stainless steel. Mr. Phelps recently passed away, so there will be no more of those pistols.

Badger is a top notch custom barrel maker. They are superbly accurate and well made barrels.

Another company, Magnum Research, makes a similar pistol. Theirs is called the BFR which stands for Big Fat (yeah right) Biggest Finest Revolver. [uh huh, and when calling B-52s “BUFF"s the “FF” means Fabulous Flier, right?] It costs a bit less, and weighs over a pound less.

Factory .45-70 ammunition is available everywhere. Although the cartridge is over 135 years old at this point, it is still a very popular hunting round. The bullets are huge, ranging from 300 grains to well over 530 grains, which is an ounce and a quarter of lead. Factory ammo is loaded to extremely low pressure so that it is safe to shoot in the old antique black powder rifles, but it still manages to propel a 300 grain bullet at about 1800 feet per second. And that matches the very best performance you will get from any of today’s super pistol cartridges - the .460 magnums, the .500 S&W, the .454 Casull. All of which operate at 3 times the pressure. From deer to the largest polar bears, there is no animal on the American continent that this cartridge can’t handle.

At 6 lbs, the Bison Bull pistol weighs almost as much as the popular Marlin 1895 rifle which fires the same cartridge, and costs about half as much. But that weight absorbs a whole lot of recoil, so the kick on this metal mule really isn’t all that bad. It just gives you hip dysplasia carrying it around in a holster! LOL

I do not know if the Bison Bull or it’s older cousin the BFR can handle the hotter hand loaded .45-70 cartridges. I doubt it. In a stout rifle, hot rodded .45-70 rounds are nearly as potent as those in the .458 Winchester Magnum, which is one of the smaller elephant cartridges. So yeah, it’s enough gun. No matter what.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
