Finally, Some Sun

It’s been dark and wet here for most of a week. We received a good measure of some badly needed rain, and then it kept right on raining. So today it’s mild, the sun is out, the ground is soft, and I’m going to go play in the garden. I managed to dig out 3 20 gallon bins full of soil in between the showers, and now that has to be sifted; a couple more bins full after that, and I can lay in the lower half of the central garden bed. I’ve got the trench dug for the hefty edger stones, so getting a half dozen of them in place should only take ... forever. That comes first, then sifting and mixing good topsoil and fertilizer into the old dirt, then laying that in and compacting it a bit, and then, then I can finally plant. And then I can do it all over again and dig the outer half of the upper central area. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Further down, past the end of the patio, there’s an 8x8 spot that seems to get full sun all day long. I’ve got some annual bulbs that require brilliant light to go in there. As soon as I sift a hundred million stones out of the hardened subsoil there, and work some good black earth into that poor dirt.

It’s a big project, and between the weather, getting sick from allergies, a couple flare ups of tennis elbow, a sore back, my weekend job, and all the other demands on my time, it’s taking a long long time to complete. But complete it I shall, and then I’ll have a place to build a pretty refuge from the nonsense of the world. And that’s what it’s all about.

Oh, right, I’d better remember to swap in a new propane tank on the super grill. We’ve been cooking everything on it, so we’ve used up a whole “short” tank of gas already. ("short" because the propane tank exchange people put only 15lb in the standard 20lb tank, so they don’t last as long as they ought to.)

Right then. Coffee. Bacon sandwich. Wee. My clomp-along mud shoes. Hat. And away!!

Update, many hours later: Ok, good enough for one day. I got the central cross wall dug in, plinthed, and laid in nice and square and plumb. It comes to within a 1/4” of the edgers, which is just fine. I went to town with the adhesive glop, and clamped everything in place. In about a week it will be good and hard. And while I was at it, I dug out another 3 bins worth of dirt. So that’s all done for this part of the garden. It just needs to dry off a bit and then be sifted back into place. My back held up fine, but my elbow is starting to get tired. So time to quit. And time for a cuppa coffee. And a shower. And then off to work for a couple hours to clean my offices. Woo hoo.

I heard from Peiper. He is mostly Ok, but suffering from some rotten back pain. It sucks getting older. Yeah, tell me.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:

3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:

It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.
