falling thru the cracks …. questions, questions Any Answers?

Reading more about that wanker in Tucson, and apparently he fell through some security cracks.  Appears (from the start) that this miserable excuse for a human being showed signs of being off the rails for awhile. But I guess he managed to have enough presence of mind to fool the system, and got a weapon. Now there’s a bunch of dead people including a little girl. There are folks here who know my views who are asking me questions out of interest, for which I have no answers.

Some conversations usually start when ppl hear my accent and ask, oh. Are you Canadian? The reason they ask about Canada, is because they have found that Canadians who are mistaken for Americans, often show offense at being confused with us. So I say no, I’m American. I’m from Ca.
I learned about that the first year we were here. 

So then the questions come. Like, isn’t it time you Americans installed better safeguards? I guess the answer is yes but that only leads to another question.  How?  They keep referring to “massacres” like it happens every week, ignoring a few of their own. But then, they have had fewer. Of course they have other crimes of unending number via axe and knife and hammer in a case or two. And shoes used to kick in heads.  Even young girls get into the act here.

Anyway ... answers aren’t to be found based on knee jerk emotional reaction, but knowledge and logic.

Like you, I believe in the right to own guns.  But I can’t help but wonder if the system (at least in Az) is too lax. And let me say, I would not want to live in Az. again if I didn’t own a gun. But shouldn’t it be made harder in order better screen ppl? Not perfect screening as I know that can’t be possible.  But something better then what’s in place now.  Is there something better?  Is there ever any reasonable way to stop someone like this at an earlier date?  How far do believe it is reasonable to go, in trying to screen would be buyers?  Ignored in all of this naturally, is the question of illegally owned guns and especially in the hands of criminals. That’s another problem altogether and not a focus here.  Although I should point out that once upon a time in England, crimes in which a gun was used was rare. It was rare because the law came down so hard on those few who used a gun, it actually did discourage the criminal fraternity.  Things changed with immigration and the discovery of civil rights for minorities and I’m not going there. I just bring it up as a point of reference.

So .. Any Answers?

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
