EU pushes to stop US from using European cheese names like … Parmesan.  And Feta.screw the EU

The meatheads at the EU want to make American cheese makers stop using names we’ve been using for at least a hundred years.
I never knew this but ... apparently Parmesan cheese isn’t simply the name of cheese. Oh no. We are now told it’s actually the name of the region where that cheese comes from, and so the shit heads at the EU want Wisc. makers to quite using that name. And stop using the Feta name as well.

Sometimes I get so damn pissed off at those fucks I think, we shouldda let the Germans keep the damn place and good luck to em cos there ain’t nobody at home there.  OK,OK. Extreme, just frustrated, pissed off and nobody to hit and probably wouldn’t anyway cos I’d only get arrested and being an American ...aw nuts!  I really don’t like that place, or at least I don’t like the bureaucratswho run the show.

Here ... read this. Am I over reacting ?  I see things as we cave in here just a little and there just a little til ...
Oh yeah. And I don’t much care for the UN either. Never have.

Whine and cheese: EU complains over impostor American feta
EU pushes to stop US from using European cheese names like feta, gorgozola and parmesan

By Raf Sanchez, Washington, Bruno Waterfield in Brussels

The cheese makers of rural Wisconsin wouldn’t usually spend much time worrying about the European Union.
More than 4,000 miles from Brussels, they are too busy producing an annual 2.6 billion pounds of cheese and fending off challengers for the title of cheese capital of the United States.

But now the EU is a regular topic of anxious conversation among Wisconsinites, who proudly refer to themselves as “cheeseheads”.

“Europe has become this spectre looming over us,” said Kathy Martin, owner of the Hillbilly Hollow goat dairy in Conover, a town of just over 1,000.
Wisconsin’s fears stem from an EU push to prevent American dairy makers from using what it says are specifically European names of cheese varieties.

The EU argues that names like feta, parmesan, gorgonzola and others are “geographical indicators” linked to specific European regions and Americans should not be allowed to use the names even if they are made in the same way.

The plan would give the cheese varieties the same protections that prevent Californian sparkling wine from being called champagne or Canadian whiskey labelled as Scotch.

“‘Salty white cheese’ doesn’t have the same ring to it as ‘feta’,” said John Umhoefer, executive director of the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association.
He said that many family-run cheese makers were still using recipes brought over from their ancestors in the 1800s and faced potential bankruptcy if forced to abandon those names.

“These small family businesses are an endangered species and need to be protected,” he said.
European sources told The Telegraph that the issue of cheese names are “a real problem” as the US and EU try to negotiate a transatlantic free trade pact worth more than £120 billion a year.

In a rare moment of bipartisanship, more than 50 Republican and Democrat senators wrote to the US trade negotiators urging them to reject any EU plan “that would restrict in any way the ability of US producers to use common cheese names”.

“Can you imagine going into a grocery store and cheddar and provolone are called something else?” said Pat Toomey, a Republican senator who spearheaded the effort.

The EU has already successfully closed some foreign markets to what it deems the impostor cheeses. American cheese makers are unable to sell Parmesan in South Korea unless they re-brand it and Washington fears that Europe may use free trade agreements to spread those restrictions.

Brussels’ cheese regulators have shown at least some ability to compromise in the past.
In Canada, where 91 per cent of feta is made locally, the EU trade deal allows it to be sold as long as the packaging “does not evoke Greece” with the Greek alphabet or ancient ruins and is clearly labelled as Canadian feta-style of feta-like cheese.

Around 1,200 regional food names - like Parma ham, cognac and sherry - are protected in the EU under legislation to “identify a product as originating in the territory of a particular country, region or locality where its quality, reputation or other characteristic is linked to its geographical origin”.

“It’s so absurd it sounds like a Monty Python sketch,” said Abby Morgan, a Pennsylvania cheese monger, as she imagined EU bureaucrats scrutinising US cheese labels.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
