Democrats Discover Databases

As a professional database administrator (DBA), I am highly offended that Democrats are appropriating my technology for their own personal gain. In truth, I find it hilarious that the Donks have just discovered the advantages of data mining. I’ve been designing and building data warehousees for businesses for .. oh .. about fifteen years now. I haven’t done any work for political parties yet so you can’t blame me for that.

Data warehousing and data mining are invaluable tools for businesses to target advertising and consumer markets. Unfortunately for the Democrats, I think their plan is doomed to failure. Why? Because up until now they’ve gotten most of their funding from large donors like Soros and the Hollywood crowd whereas Republicans have actually received more in donations from the population at large, mainly in $5, $10 and $100 donations. That’s a fact. Check the latest campaign finance reports, particularly from the 2004 election.

The Donks will fail in this venture because their base is narrowly grouped on the coasts, mostly in poorer neighborhoods. These people aren’t going to donate. They can’t afford even $5 in most cases. Sure, they can take a free ride to the polls in a party-provided van and vote the Democratic ticket every few years but actually fork out money? No way. The Democrats are about to find out that pandering to the poor will get them votes but very little cash. Watch and see ...

Democrats’ Data Mining Stirs an Intraparty Battle
March 8, 2006

(WASHINGTON POST)

A group of well-connected Democrats led by a former top aide to Bill Clinton is raising millions of dollars to start a private firm that plans to compile huge amounts of data on Americans to identify Democratic voters and blunt what has been a clear Republican lead in using technology for political advantage.

The effort by Harold Ickes, a deputy chief of staff in the Clinton White House and an adviser to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), is prompting intense behind-the-scenes debate in Democratic circles. Officials at the Democratic National Committee think that creating a modern database is their job, and they say that a competing for-profit entity could divert energy and money that should instead be invested with the national party.

Ickes and others involved in the effort acknowledge that their activities are in part a vote of no confidence that the DNC under Chairman Howard Dean is ready to compete with Republicans on the technological front. “The Republicans have developed a cadre of people who appreciate databases and know how to use them, and we are way behind the march,” said Ickes, whose political technology venture is being backed by financier George Soros.

“It’s unclear what the DNC is doing. Is it going to be kept up to date?” Ickes asked, adding that out-of-date voter information is “worse than having no database at all.”

Ickes’s effort is drawing particular notice among Washington operatives who know about it because of speculation that he is acting to build a campaign resource for a possible 2008 presidential run by Hillary Clinton.

She has long been concerned, advisers say, that Democrats and liberals lack the political infrastructure of Republicans and their conservative allies. Ickes said his new venture, Data Warehouse, will at first seek to sell its targeting information to politically active unions and liberal interest groups, rather than campaigns.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
