Criminals on probation committed 120 murders in two years.
Well, here I am again with a posting from not so merry olde England.
Not just because of the nature of this story and I promise not for any kind of shock value. I got to thinking, if the number is this high here in a country with a population so much smaller then then the USA, good grief. What must it be like back home in America?
Has anyone published reports like this? I’m sure they must have.
So, there are at least 120 people whose futures ended the day criminal scum were allowed probation.
Maybe it’s just meself that’s fallen off the edge of the planet. I don’t understand this at all. Is there any way to understand?
Criminals on probation committed 120 murders in two years
By James Kirkup, Political Correspondent
Between April 2006 and April this year, offenders serving community sentences and suspended sentences were convicted of a total of 121 murders.
There were a total of 1,004 serious crimes committed by offenders being supervised by the Probation Service, including 22 attempted murders, 103 rapes and 682 other serious violent or sexual offences.
Another 374 alleged offences committed by criminals in the community have yet to come to trial.
Figures from the Ministry of Justice also showed a rise in the number of offenders being spared jail and given community-based sentences instead.
Some 162,650 offenders started supervised community sentences in 2007, a 5 per cent rise from 2006.
The number of offenders supervised by the Probation Service was 242,720 at 31 December 2007, up 3 per cent on the previous year.
The disclosure will put new pressure on ministers over their drive to keep offenders out of jail because of prison overcrowding.
Earlier this week it was revealed that prisoners set free early to cut jail numbers have been accused of three murders. Offenders released under the “end of custody licence” system have also been accused of 8 acts of wounding and 170 other violent crimes.
The Ministry of Justice insisted that the vast majority of offenders on probation had originally committed only minor offences, giving no clue that they would later commit serious crimes when on probation.
The Ministry said: “Any serious offence is of great concern and the Probation Service condemns the actions of any individual who is responsible for these offences.
“The Probation Service knows the impact crimes have on victims and their families and is constantly working towards having the best possible systems in place to supervise these offenders in the community and protect the public.
“The number of SFO (Serious Further Offence) convictions against all offenders supervised by the Probation Service was around 0.3% last year. We recognise that each of the offences has a victim, to whom we extend our sympathies.
“The vast majority of SFOs are committed by offenders given a community order by the court, having been convicted of less serious offences.
“In most cases, nothing in their previous offending histories has indicated that they would be capable of such serious offences.”
Harry Fletcher, assistant general secretary of Napo, the probation officers’ union, said: “The number of offenders involved in further serious crimes is less than 0.5 per cent of the total under supervision.
“Obviously we would like to get that figure as low as we can but we are dealing with people with mental health problems, drug and alcohol addictions and further offences are inevitable.”
Criminals being supervised by the Probation Service have committed more than 120 murders in two years, official figures have revealed.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.
- Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
- Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
- Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
- Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
