Sure, Why Not?

A little tie in with the next post ... for all you parrot heads out there. Count me in.

... and now that I’m home from Jerry’s 50th birthday party, NOW I feel like drinking and dancing. I need a cup or two of tachyons; I’m about 4 hours behind realtime.

Rockin’ Red’s Mystery Rifle

image

Free caulk to the first one who can properly identify the rifle, with proof.
No forearm, a huge Henry style magazine slide (or is it a super short loading lever hinged waaay forward?), and what looks like a side loading port up on its own boss??
Or is this a stripped down gun, missing the right side plate? Is that a side ejection port? And it looks quite old.
Middle finger behind the trigger, or inside the lever’s trigger guard??

With all the dire warnings…

“With all these dire warnings
Of pain, doom, and strife,
It’s hard to imagine,
A fate worse than life!”

Amazing isn’t it? I remember that quote from MAD Magazine when I was 11 or 12 years old.

Now that I (hopefully) have your attention, I’d like the couple of LDS BMEWS’d members to listen up!

Uh, read up?

My favorite hymn is ‘Praise to the Man’. It’s about Joseph Smith. Text by W.W. Phelps (as are a lot of the hymns from those days) Music is ‘Scottish folk song’

I found that ‘folk song’. It’s the ‘unofficial’ Scottish Anthem: Scotland the Brave!

Pretty All Around

Not exactly today’s Top 40, but a nice tune done by a pretty singer a few years back.

There’s a light at each end of this tunnel,

You shout ‘cause you’re just as far in as you’ll ever be out

And these mistakes you’ve made, you’ll just make them again

If you’d only try turning around.

2 AM and I’m still awake, writing a song

If I get it all down on paper, it’s no longer inside of me,

Threatening the life it belongs to

And I feel like I’m naked in front of the crowd

Cause these words are my diary, screaming out loud

And I know that you’ll use them, however you want to

But you can’t jump the track, we’re like cars on a cable,

And life’s like an hourglass, glued to the table

No one can find the rewind button now

Sing it if you understand.

and breathe, just breathe

woah breathe, just breathe,

Oh breathe, just breathe,

Oh breathe, just breathe.

A Simpler, More Innocent Era

Some Hippie Dippy Stuff

A proto-video. Anthropologically groovy.

Still just about the best bass line ever done, I gotta say.

And it’s not like I was going to post Three Five Zero Zero ... but I will paste this fun, rather modern fusion one ...

late night free association

I need a cuppa tea before I can get back to sleep ... grab a mug, flip on the kettle, heating the water, impatiently, glance at the clock on the stove, and the brain throws up

Midnight;
And I’m a waiting
on the PG Tips
Hoping that a mug of Rich
will put me down for this bedtime

... damn, I know that tune! Where, when, who??

I can hear the wooden guitar in my mind. I can hear the beat, driving busily along like an old steam locomotive.

Who done it? Was this a Linda Ronstadt tune from forever ago? No. Come on brain ... dig it up ...

Midnight;
And I’m a waiting
on the 12:05
Hoping it’ll take me
Just a little farther down the line

Moonlight
You’re just a heartache in disguise
Won’t you keep my heart from breaking
If it’s only for a very short time

Right! Queen of Hearts
Now, who did that? Was is Hart? No. Not Abba. Dolly Parton? I don’t think so, but some of that TN twang is in there. Olivia Newton-John? No, but ...

It was a woman named Juice Newton. Early 80s, country rock singer. Did this one, did Angel of the Morning, did a couple other ones I can’t remember, faded off the radio.

Really nice looking lady. TONS of soft blonde hair. Made Farrah Faucet look bald in comparison.

image
I seem to recall her hair was even longer and fuller than this at some point. Maybe I was 21 and it was my hormones.

Yup, once upon a time this was pop music. Not only could you dance to it, rock style or country style, you and your date or even a carload of friends could sing along. Because we were that innocent in some ways, way back when.

Mmm ... the tea is just right now. Glug glug glug, and back to bed. Well, after I sneak one of these blueberry muffins I found in the pack here on the kitchen counter. Hey, I’m doing them a favor, keeping one from going stale!

Still Alive, Still Kickin’

One more of those old time rock ‘n roll bands that’s still together, sort of, that you figured broke up ages ago. The Guess Who ... in my opinion, just about the definitive sound of the 60s and early 70s ... still churning it out in the 21st Century.

Here’s 14 minutes of live show. No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature --> Albert Flasher --> Hand Me Down World --> Bus Rider

I was just going to post NST/NMN, which is simply the grooviest single tune with double lyrics ever, but this is better. I’d forgotten what a rocker Bus Rider was, which is a relatively new Guess Who tune from 2000, and now that I’m older I can see how it might have roots in some older tunes from the 50s. Maybe. It still rocks either way.

Grab the evenin’ paper and sit down in your chair
Grab yourself a toupee, cause you’re losin’ your hair
Doesn’t matter what you do you’ve nothin’ to lose
I’m so awful goddamn glad I’m not in your shoes
Bus rider.

*****************************

I got to keep a-movin get my hat off the rack
I gotta boogie woogie like a knife’s in my back
So be my guest, you got nothin’ to lose
Won’t cha let me take you on a sea cruise?
Sea Cruise

Problem is, today’s band includes exactly nobody who was in the group in the early years. Before Bachman-Turner Overdrive went their own way. Or even anybody from the middle years, like the 2003 SARS concert in front of half a million fans. So are they still the Guess Who?, or are they really the Who Are You Kidding?

At any rate, the clip above is from 2000, when the band was Randy Bachman, Burton Cummings, Jim Kale, Garry Peterson (from 1968) and Don McDougall (from 1972), which is authentic enough. Thanks, Wiki!

Best cover of ‘Africa’ I’ve ever heard.

Just for comparison, here is Toto’s original version.

No I ain’t drunk

Prednisone ... goes right to my head. Throws the body into hyperdrive, which is great for getting well fast. It also ramps up your appetite, and spikes your emotions. Oh joy.

Anyway, prescription meds notwithstanding, this is a neat tune. Heard it on the drive home tonight as an alternate selection on the Christian Rock radio station.

If you’re lost and alone
Or you’re sinking like a stone
Carry on
May your past be the sound
Of your feet upon the ground
Carry on

Sharkey BONANO
Sharkey and His Kings of Dixieland

In New York from 1936-39 Sharkey Bonano was one of just three trumpeters leading bands, being only 5’ 4”, loud, flamboyant, cocky and arrogant and with Cavanaugh bowler hat perched on his head, he was the ultimate showman.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
