Too Much Fun

Before the Skipper signs off for the night, I checked my e-mails (all 400 of them) and discovered my good buddy Stan, down in Austin had attended a Leon Russell concert and mentioned Commander Cody And His Lost Planet Airmen.

How could I pass this up?

If you click here, you can download (2.4 MB MP3) the aforementioned group (from the early 70’s) performing “Too Much Fun” live.

If you can’t dance to this, you need therapy ....

Leon Russell is going strong at 73 Years Old

Austin beer joint update…

I saw Leon Russell at Threadgill’s last night. The beer was cold, the sky was clear and full of stars and all was right with the world, at least for a few hours. He can still rock and roll, but he needs a cane to get to the stage.

He has his two daughters singing backup vocals for him now. They must be in their 40’s. The audience was a bunch of geriatric old hippies. At then end of night, he said:

Now that was the last song. Back in the old days, I would get up and walk off stage and let you folks clap and scream for a few minutes, then I would come back and play an encore. Well we’re all too damned old for that now. I don’t want to break my hip and some of you old geezers might hyperventilate and have a stroke.

He then broke into “Delta Lady” and nailed it.

The original Threadgill’s on North Lamar in Austin, is where Janice Joplin got her start as a singer. She moved from Beaumont to Austin and then to San Francisco. The new Threadgill’s is right next to where the old Armadillo World Headquarters was. The first time I saw Leon Russell was at the old Armadillo World Headquarters in the early 1970’s. It was a wonderful hippie beer joint, in the old National Guard Armory, in downtown Austin, with no air conditioning, beer soaked carpet, $1 pitchers, 3 tacos for $1 and so much pot smoke, that you could get high by just showing up.

I saw the ghosts of old armadillos last night.

Big Band Playground

Tannenberg drug himself in through the back door of the website today, after quite an absence. In honor of his return I decided to do a big band post.

I have found a web site that can occupy a big band lovers time for at least a month or two. It is www.redhotjazz.com.

It has all sorts of pictures and information about bands both famous and obscure, more importantly it contains hundreds, if not thousands of old recordings in Real Audio format. Click here to get the Real Audio player if you haven’t already got it.

If you are a big band fan, this is about the best playground that you could ever stumble into. If you are not, go there anyway, you may be a big band fan before you leave.

As a sample, listen to the famous Louis Armstrong playing Ain’t Misbehavin’ or You’re Driving Me Crazy. Listen to the obscure Buster Bailey and His Rhythm Busters play Man With A Horn Goes Beserk.

*Tannenberg follows the link and exits the website, never to be seen again*

Update: After poking around a bit this is more of an “Early Jazz Band” website instead of a “Big Band” website. The world stopped in the mid to late 30s as far as this web site is concerned. It is still a lot of fun though. There is no “Music” category for for postings at BMEWS. We have an “Eye Candy” why not an “Ear Candy?”

Update to the Update: This web site gets us past the 30s. A little Glenn Miller should put Tannenberg ”In the Mood.”

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
