chewing the numbers, again

As time goes by, more and more data about the COVID virus becomes available.

And more and more, it looks to me like we’ve been conned.

Pray for the people at nursing homes, veterans retirement homes, mental hospitals, and development centers. They are the ones who are sick and dying, far more than their small part of the population.

My little country of Hunterdon is now the 3rd least infected county in the state. 1st and 2nd place are two counties down at the south end of the state that are pretty much empty. Big areas, almost no population. And thus almost no cases.

Hunterdon County has around 125,000 residents, and 710 cases. My little piece of it, Union Twonship, has 5500 residents and 147 cases. But the New Truth is that we also have a rather large county developmental center for the special needs folks. 600 residents live there. They report 109 active cases. That’s 18%, which is catastrophic. But it also means that they’re 74% of the cases in our township, and 15% of the cases in the county. This holds basically true around the county, with the cases at LTC making up 40% of all cases in the county, and 60% of the deaths. Up north in hard hit Bergen County, while the LTC cases are only 24%, they are 59% of the deaths.

I know I’ve said the same thing several times already, but it isn’t sinking in to our leaders’ heads. These are people who generally do not go out in public, and sadly aren’t visited all that much by outsiders. They are part of the population, but not really part of the equation. Without a doubt the pandemic in their little world is epidemic and endemic. They’re being hammered and there isn’t anything that can be done about it. The staff there is also significantly infected, and those people DO go out in the world. Are they an infectious vector for the rest of us? Are they the ones bringing it in to these places and spreading it around and around? Maybe both. Or neither. I really don’t know.

But I do know that without the cases in the HDC, the numbers for my township are 4900 residents and 38 cases. 3/4 of 1 percent. Which is pretty damn small overall. And these are total numbers after almost 4 1/2 months of infection. January 1 to May 10. It doesn’t amount to much.

So why on earth is the lockdown continuing? Especially with our governor’s impossible standards of 2+ weeks of declining numbers, alongside ramping up testing to amazing 20,000 tests per day, but not providing any additional testing sites. It’s an impossibility. Is it designed to fail??

The Governor has to set more reasonable goals and requirements for opening the state up, so that Hunterdon County and New Jersey can get back to business, Freeholder Matt Holt announced at the Board’s May 5thmeeting.

Holt, the Freeholder Board’s Economic Development liaison, stated, “Businesses that are still open have adapted to protecting people’s health with directional signage, social distance marks on the floors, handing out sanitary wipes, mandatory face coverings, and plexiguard shields. Let’s give closed businesses a chance toopen andimplement the same safety precautions to get our economy moving again.”

The veteran Hunterdon Freeholder, who has served on the Board for thirteen years, said, “Governor Murphy has put forth parameters for re-starting the economythat, in my opinion, sets the bar too high –it sets up roadblocks and nearly unobtainable goals.Instead of creating roadblocks, the state should be looking to clear them, to get New Jersey back to work.”Holt stated, “We recognize COVID-19 is contagious and can be dangerous.  That is why precautions must be taken with any business re-opening. But the Governor’s plan is out of sync.

Called Restoring Economic Health Through Public Health, the plan requires 14 consecutive days of reductions in COVID-19 positive cases in the state. Yet the plan also calls for 20,000 tests per day statewide by the end of the month.  But more testing will result in more positive tests, and with the increased testing we may not hit 14 straight daysof decline in positive casesuntil sometime late in the summeror later.”Holt added, “And while the Governor’s plan calls for increased testing, right now the Governor has not set up even one state test site –thetest sitesare all either county run or the two federal sites.Quite frankly the entire plan is frustrating as proposed.”

still breathing

Sorry, not much blogging. Plenty busy at home, doing this and that.

Sun of a gun, it’s cold and windy today. There was actually a bit of snow in New York City last night. None here, and now the sun is out ... after days of rain. Awful lot of rain this year. Maybe Spring will get here at some point in June.

Right. Have to try and motor-vate myself to the store, or else it’s frozen hot dogs for dinner again. Tired of QC ... quarantine chow.

PC Progress

Ok, the HD power cable arrived, so with a bit of fussing about, I got it hooked up. And ... it didn’t even cause a hiccup. Didn’t even get a notice from Plug ‘N Play. It was just there. So I have access to all my old data, I think . I may have to change some permissions, which shouldn’t be so hard. Now I have to figure out how to migrate all my old installed software. Migrate isn’t the right word ... I have to get all their information into the new Registry. My bet is, there’s an app for that.

Even if I can only recover my Office 200n suite and a few of the better graphics programs, I’ll be good. Then I have to figure out how to get the Windows OS off of that drive, and get back lots of HD space.

But considering ... so far, so good.

Trying To Be Color Blind, Failing

“Unnamed woman” shoots OK McD’s employees because drive thru only

Hey stupid: COVID, lockdown??

At least two McDonald’s workers in Oklahoma were shot Wednesday evening after informing two female customers the dining area was closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, authorities said.

The incident occurred at about 6 p.m. at an Oklahoma City location. One of the women grew angry over the lack of seating and opened fire striking one employee in the leg and the other in the shoulder, police said. They are expected to recover, according to Oklahoma City’s KOCO-TV.

Prior to the shooting, 32-year-old suspect reportedly got into a physical altercation with a third employee who was knocked down and suffered a head laceration, police said. The suspect then left the restaurant before coming back with a gun and firing off two or three rounds, Capt. Larry Withrow, of the Oklahoma City Police Department, told Business Insider.

The suspects were taken into custody following the incident, police said. It’s not clear yet what charges they will be facing.

The article doesn’t give their names or show their photos, so you know they’re black. And I can guarantee you they were both fat enough to date Trayvon Martin and not be able to read cursive.

What is it about McDonald’s that causes fat black women to go violently crazy? How many of these beatdown videos are out there, how many employees assaulted because the store ran out of McNuggets, how many crack hoes in the parking lot willing to trade oral sex for a cheeseburger?

So you know who did this. Had a screaming fit because the dining area was closed. WTF have you been for the past 6 weeks?? Got told NO by an employee, reacted with violence. Went out and got her gun, came back and shot people. Because she couldn’t get her way. Batshit sheeboon ghettopotamus.

And the po-po don’t know what to charge her with. Seriously? Are you that fucking stupid too? Assuming only the one of them did the hitting and shooting, then a) assault, b) disturbing the peace, c) at least two counts of attempted murder, d) any and all charges related to her possession and use of a firearm.

Lock the cow up for 20 years, as it’s also a guarantee that the entire incident was on at least one CCTV camera. Maybe they can run a test, and throw in drunk and disorderly, or search her vehicle and find some drugs, etc. Throw the book at her, and cover every page with glue so that everything sticks.

And book her girlfriend as an accesory for all the charges.

An Un-Bridge Post

What a non-surprise. “Bridgegate” was a hit job against the Chris Christie administration. Well no shirt.

US Supreme Court Tosses Bridgegate Convictions

The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday threw out convictions against Bridget Anne Kelly and Bill Baroni, two former Christie administration officials charged in what has become known as Bridgegate.

The court unanimously overturned the 2016 convictions of Gov. Chris Christie’s former deputy chief of staff, Bridget Anne Kelly, and William Baroni, the former governor’s top political appointment at the Port Authority, while acknowleding they “used deception to reduce Fort Lee’s access lanes to the George Washington Bridge – and thereby jeopardized the safety of the town’s residents.”

But Justice Elena Kagan, who wrote the opinion, said prosecutors wrongfully applied federal statutes in the case.

“Not every corrupt act by state or local officials is a federal crime. Because the scheme here did not aim to obtain money or property, Baroni and Kelly could not have violated the federal-program fraud or wire fraud laws,” she wrote.
...
Kelly and Baroni were found guilty in November 2016 of all charges — conspiracy, wire fraud and civil rights violations — connected to the scandal, which involved shutting down several local access lanes to the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee as retribution against Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich, a Democrat, for not endorsing Christie for reelection in 2013. A federal grand jury returned a seven-count indictment against them in May 2015.

The foolish flunky at Port Authority, David Wildstein copped a plea to 2 counts of conspiracy and got 3 years probation for it. So no exculpation for him.

Was this whole affair of unwarranted placement of a bunch of rubber traffic cones really some kind of payback against the unsupportive mayor of Fort Lee? Probably. Maybe. Who really cares? IIRC the lanes were only closed off for a few days. So big deal, shut up, move on. The whole criminal charge thing was pretty much just the Left going into High Dudgeon mode to zap anyone on the Right as hard as possible. I’m sure General Flynn could have something to say about that.

Another 30 days in NJ

Gov. Murphy extends New Jersey coronavirus public health emergency another 30 days

New Jersey is extending its public health emergency over the coronavirus pandemic for another 30 days, Gov. Phil Murphy announced Wednesday.

Murphy signed an executive order that will keep the declaration in place through at least June 6.

“I want to make it absolutely clear that this action does not mean that we are seeing anything in the data which would pause our path forward and it should not be interpreted by anyone to mean we are going to be tightening any of the restrictions currently in place,” Murphy said at a daily briefing.

No, what it means is that his edict continues his tyranny, and that of his chronies, for another month. Until he renews it again.

The order extends all executive orders issued under the governor’s authority through the Emergency Health Powers Act, Murphy’s office said. It also extends all actions taken by any executive branch departments in response to the virus. It expires after 30 days unless renewed.

NJ has been under a state of emergency since March 9.

By whatever metrics are used, New Jersey claims to have 131,890 cases and 8,549 deaths. And 23,345 of those cases are in long term care “LTC” facilities, with 4,261 deaths. Which means 1 case in 5, and half the deaths, are people who are NOT out in public. NJ has a population of about 9 million.

39% of all deaths have been people at least 80 years old; 28% are those 65 - 79. So 67% are NOT people of working age. The pre-retirement bracket, age 50-65, accounts for 13.5%. All told, older folks account for more than 80% of all the COVID fatalities in New Jersey. It is almost a guarantee that those older people who have died have also had at least one, if not several, comorbidities such as diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic ailments. Not to mention obesity and high blood pressure. Or being living black.

My little rural county of Hunterdon isn’t all that much different statistically. 45.5% of all the COVID cases are in LTC facilities, as are 64.1% of the deaths.

Conclusion? Outside of nursing homes, this plague is a lot less prevalent and deadly than the media leads me to believe.

Second conlusion: the global lockdown may have been the biggest mistake in human history.

More new home reno plans

Gosh, us smart types here at our condo finally figured out that we could really simplify our renovation plans, and save a ton of money, if we just put in a stacked washer / dryer in downstairs, instead of rebuilding half the upstairs to move our side by side appliances up there. Problem with the stacked idea is that she isn’t 7 feet tall. If you stack a dryer on top of a front load washer, the dryer controls are 6 feet off the floor. Several companies (LG, Kenmore, Dexter) had dryers with the controls mounted on the bottom front panel for just this reason, but those seem to have been discontinued for the home market. The LG models I can get this way ( they call it AdaptAble™ ) are the commercial ones, with coin boxes and remote soap dispensers. Don’t need that for my house, and I don’t know if those models are even sold to the home user. Maybe stacked appliances is so 2017, eww.

It doesn’t matter if the washer / dryer costs several thousand; remodeling the upstairs would cost easily 3 times that much.

Yes, Fisher Paykel has their Euro-sized Series 7 model with this kind of base panel control, but the darn thing is puny, only 24” wide. All European appliances are undersized, even ovens and dishwashers.

Back online, but not much to say

Ok, the PC is set up pretty well. I had to order a special cable to power the old HD, so I’ll get to that when it shows up. I did figure out how to mount the thing in the new machine, which has a smaller, very simple case. And a minimal power supply. And no extra RAM slots. And fewer motherboard slots. Which is what you get when you buy a budget machine. But at least they stuck in a Barracuda drive, which is a really fast one for it’s size.

A couple of COVID stories in the news, one about a newylwed couple from California who went to Hawaii for their honeymoon, wouldn’t sign the acceptance form for the 14 quarantine Hawaii has going, went outside and got arrested. How stupid do you have to be to not know this is going on? How dumb is their travel service and the airline for not mentioning this as well? Sure, you want to take a honeymoon right now. Gee, tough cookies. The whole damn world is in lock down, so put that idea on pause for now. Just like these fools on cruise ships. Giant DUH. Of course there will be infected people on your boat. Of course you’re going to get stuck there for weeks. Of course no port in the world is going to let your ship dock and let you ashore. Are you brain dead, or what?

Oklahoma had a Wear A Mask rule in place for one day. Shop owners were threatened with guns and violence. Governor backed down. Guess you Oklahomians are a selfish bunch of fucktards too. Whether or not a mask does any good, if that’s the only kind of lock down they’ve got out there, then suck it the hell up. All you’re doing is showing willing, being publicly consciencous. That’s all. Is it unconstitutional? Of course. State of Emergency, duh. I don’t like it either but you go along this little bit. So get your head out of your stuck up ass already.  No, let’s watch the numbers spike like mad in OK. And my response will be ... tough shit cowboy.

And that’s about it.

woo hoo!!

It seems to be a PC !!

Took a bit of set up, and I did whatever seemed obvious to retain my privacy from Microsoft etc. Installed Firefox right away. Got my contact list intact for yahoo, will work on figuring out how to get my bookmarks etc once I get the old HD set up.

But for now, it’s a functional PC, so I’m happy.

last tablet post I hope

Woo hoo, the new PC arrived last night.  I’m getting it set up now, figuring which cable goes where, and cleaning things up in the machine’s dusty corner. It’s a lot easier to do this than back in the day, but some things never change: I have to go buy a special cable. The video output doesn’t accept the old style cable that my monitor uses. Lucky me the monitor can uses several kinds of cable, so it’s off to the store to get an HDMI. Then I can start it up, get all the bits recognized and get the Wifi going. It was a trial finding that password on our Android phones, her old mini Mac tablet, or my Android tablet. Lucky us, we’re “wired”, so it was easy to find it on the TV when we remembered it was wifi enabled too.

Right. A quick coffee, a quicker shower, then off to Walmart to get a cable.
