BMEWS is conspicuously absent

It’s amazing what can be found at Neal Boortz’s website…

Like this list of the world’s 50 most powerful blogs. Neal was upset that he wasn’t on the list. He was beaten out by Icanhascheezburger at #8.

#1 was the Huffington Post. What? BMEWS should be #1. Hell, I don’t recall ever visiting HuffPo. Why are they #1? Why is a site dedicated to felines at #8?

You can find the full list here.

One good rant?

Joan of Argghh writes about international respect, “bringing the country back together” and the Obamessiah’s powers of unification. Nicely done. Of course, what she wrote got me thinking about Lincoln’s house divided speech, but maybe I’m just wierd that way.

Great education comes from healthy competition. Truly awful tenured professors and teachers at public schools can’t get fired. More money will not fix that, and Obama is too much of a fucking Chicago politician --bought and paid for-- to buck the NEA or any other inbred group of union slackers.

The best education? Pain.

If life doesn’t hurt when we do stupid things, we don’t learn. You posted rules and consequences for your daughter, based on that marvelous and healthy compassion for her well-being. It’s not punishment when people do stupid things and suffer for it. It’s called “learning one’s lessons.”

The divide resides in a deep, deep philosophical and moral void, that didn’t use to exist between Left and Right, back when it was a matter a style and not substance.

Today’s adults have grown up in a world that expects the government to be more than any government should ever aspire to: a supplemental oversight of the individual and their daily choices of normalcy.

We no longer agree on the substance, so the style isn’t even arguable any more.

And greed? The truly greedy are the ones who are first envious of someone with more. That is the one really ugly thing about the liberal Left: Class warfare.

Now, those who do not work for the government outright, are bound to support those who do. When government grows beyond its rightful place, the silent, plodding cows of capitalism bear the burden.

Fuck ‘em all. Fuck FDR and LBJ and O-ba-ma.

CHANGE? Hardly. Just new shiny faces to shine the light into to keep ‘em from noticing the grimy truth of it all. What’s new about more government programs that I get to pay for? Fuck Obama. And fuck Michelle O., Hillary, John McCain and George W. Bush for playing along with it. Everyone of them is pandering to the class warfare, the free ride, the easy ticket, the expanded and distant responsible Parent Government Educator Moralizer GOD. At my expense.

Is this good, is this bad, is it full of holes or is it a bullseye? Link, Read, and Opine away ...

I wonder why other blogs get so many visitors?

I’ve been watching the stats for the past week or three. Things aren’t going that well here. BMEWS isn’t dieing, but we’ve lost readership. I’ve been doing research, reading up on all those “how to make your blog grow for fun and profit” articles. I even gave RWN’s post yesterday on “Blogging While Female” a good going over, just in case. “Be yourself”, “Be original” they said. Gee, that helps.

Then I took a look around some of the really popular sites on the internet. Wanna know what really draws people in? Pirates. And sexy women. And sexy women dressed as pirates. And sexy women dressed as anything, or better yet, undressed as anything. Face it, most of the people who spend time mousing around the internet are acne-riddled 14 year old boys who are so geeky their own mothers have locked them in the attic. They’ll do anything and go anywhere if there’s the merest hint of something, anything, female at the other end of the mouse click.

What else brings in the people? Hollywood gossip. The greatest blogs out there don’t bring in one tenth the traffic of a good scandal and skanky starlett page. Forget “Playful Primate in the TLLB ecosystem”. These sites are “Mega-Godzilla Stomping Tokyo, Server Melting, Golden Egg Laying Money Generators”.

For the younger audience, it’s dinosaurs, sharks, and Miley Cyrus. Go figure.

Right then, what to do ...

Ah ... one for the kiddies!!

image

If Tyrannosaurus rex had ever taken a dip in the ocean, this ruler of the land would have met its match - a bus-sized marine reptile with bone-crushing teeth the size of cucumbers.

In the summer of 2006, a team of Norwegian paleontologists and volunteers discovered the 150 million-year-old fossil of a pliosaur on the remote Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard about 800 miles (1,300 kilometers) from the North Pole. A year later, the team, led by vertebrate paleontologist Joern Hurum of the University of Oslo’s Natural History Museum, excavated the nearly complete skeleton.

The newly described pliosaur, dubbed The Monster by team members, boasted a length of about 50 feet (15 meters) and powerful paddles extending 10 feet (3 meters).

“Not only is this specimen significant in that it is one of the largest and relatively complete plesiosaurs ever found, it also demonstrates that these gigantic animals inhabited the northern seas of our planet during the age of dinosaurs” said Patrick Druckenmiller, a plesiosaur specialist at the University of Alaska Museum, and a member of the expedition that found and excavated the fossil.

Hey kids, is this cool, or what? Imagine having one as a pet that you could ride, or take to school for either a) show ‘n tell, or b) explaining why you didn’t do your homework. Imagine that the two of you are special friends, and the great times you’ll have together at the next Hannah Montana concert!!

Ok, that ought to hold the little bastards for a bit. Now, what else can I come up with??

Blogmaster Found

I am pleased to announce that our search for someone to take the reigns has been successfully completed.

As I wrote in the post below, I have become sort of burned out.  I still actively read the news and keep up with most of the comments here, but have not been posting content for a couple of weeks.  I knew some help was needed.

I actually didn’t want to give it up, but did not see a choice if the site was to be viable.  As we talked, it became clearer to me that a partnership may work out better for everyone since the responsibility could be shared.

So it is with great excitement that I announce that our very own Drew has agreed to come on as a full partner in the BMEWS Megopolis of Terror.  As you know, he is a voracious reader and poster of topics vast and varied.  he is a technical geek as well, so we will both have the skill to manage the site.

I can’t tell you how pleased I am that he has agreed to come on board.  Join me in lifting a pint and welcoming the new co-owner in the BMEWS brand.

Blogmaster Wanted

Dearest Members, Posters and Commenters,

As you may have noticed, I have not posted here for the last couple of weeks.  The holiday crush mixed with a family trip mixed with a number of other projects on my plate simply moved BMEWS too low on my daily radar for me to be able to give it any attention.

It is only due to the stellar performance of Drew, Peiper, Christopher and Infinity that there has been anything to read at all.  They have done a tremendous job in providing great links, commentary and focus to the current events of the day.

It seems I have lost the “fire” to keep up posting.  There are things I read that I know should be posted, but by the time I get to it, Drew or Peiper has already posted it with great analysis and comment.

Therefore, I have decided that I need to take a back seat in the running of this blog.  I would like to continue to be able to post, but the day-to-day operations are too much for my plate right now.  So I am offering BMEWS to a loving home.  To someone who has the time and inclination to make it what it can and should be.

Obviously, first consideration would go to the regular posters that contribute so faithfully already, but if there is someone else that has been in the wings, this might be your opportunity to really make an impact.

The fine print:
The Domain registration is paid up through January, 2009
The Hosting contract is due in March, 2008
I have two ad services running that have, in the past three months, generated a total of $40 in revenue.
We get an average of about 1,100 visitors per day.

If this is something you are truly interested in pursuing, please send me an email and we can work through the details.  This will not be “first come, first served”, but rather one where the best person for the job will win.

This has been a truly extraordinary experience, but the time has come to pass the torch to someone who can take BMEWS to the next level.

Is that you?

A Short Respite

Blogging will be light to non-existent for a couple of days as we take a short family trip to Cincinnati.  My apologies for not waiting on the “Christianity and Evolution” post until after the holiday, but I will pick up on it when we get back.  Very poor timing on my part.

Back in a few days.

Merry Christmas

I don’t have a profound message for today, that was taken care of 2,000 years ago.  I just want to wish all of the BMEWS members a wonderful Christmas.  I pray you can spend it with someone you love and enjoy this special season together.

MERRY

CHRISTMAS

Just in Time for Christmas

As you know, running a site like this takes a little bit of funding.  You have no doubt noticed that I’ve added some ad services to the side bar and the comments page.  Whenever you click them, we receive a few pennies that help keep us on the air.

We will be having some bills for hosting and such come up in the spring, and since the ads generate about $5 per month, I thought I’d better find some other sources (other than outright begging, of course smile ) so that I’ll have some of the cash needed when the expenses arise.

What better way to show your support of beating down moonbats than to wear it around town?  What better gift for your tree-hugging, Birkenstock-wearing, patchouli-eating office mate than a BMEWS coffee mug?

So, if you’d like to sport some new BMEWS outerwear, or drink your morning brew from a bat-cup, click here or the link on the sidebar and buy some Christmas goodies.

If there are other items you’d like to see added, just let me know and I’ll see what I can do to get it posted.

Thanks for making this the best right-sided community on the intarwebs!

Whew!

Phase I of my project is now complete, with great success, but I feel totally out of the loop with respect to current events and happenings.  I think there are about 3,000 unread items in my newsreader now.  I may have to just mark it all “read” and start fresh, loosing a couple of weeks of history in my memory.

Thanks to Peiper, Drew, Chief, Infinity, Christopher & Severa for keeping things going in my absense.  You are the best.

Now, to figure out what I’ve missed........

Not Dead Yet

Sorry for not posting a thing in a couple of weeks, but I am working on a project that is taking all my time.  All should be back to normal by the end of the week and I can catch up.  Thanks to those who have sent me some stories and notes.  Be assured I’m reading them, I just can’t do anything about them right yet.  Just a couple more days.

Thanks to the crack BMEWS posting team for keeping you up on the news.  I really appreciate you guys picking up the slack.

Glug, Glug

Sorry for not posting anything recently folks.  I’m very tied up, and probably will be for the next week, on a sooper-sekrit project.

I have about 6 stories in the hopper that I haven’t been able to get to, and hundreds more to go through on the news reader.  Hopefully some of the other BMEWS posters can coax out a post or two in the meantime.

Minor Housekeeping

Back in August, I told you I wanted to update the design a little, mostly cleanup and such.  Well, I have not had too much time to spend on it, but after reconnecting with an old friend today, I was inspired to at least do a little bit.

I still have all of your suggestions and links from that thread and will incorporate them as we go along, but for today I’ve made just a couple of changes:

  • I deleted off wholesale sections of the sidebar.

    • There were some ads there that were still tied to Allan that I had no way of updating - Gone

    • I took away the links to the RECON site, the Wiki and the Forums.  They aren’t being used right now - Gone

  • I’ve added a “Daily Reads” section to the links.  These are sites I don’t miss.  Included is The Ramblings of an Ordinary Guy.  “Lucid Guy” is a friend from many, many years ago.  I had no idea he was even a blogger, let alone interested in politics, so when I got an email from him and saw that he had BMEWS in his blogroll already, things had to be updated here.  Go have a look and leave some comments.

The next things on the list for me are:

  • Changing the header image.  I want to update it and make it a bit smaller for faster page loading
  • Updating the links section with your suggestions and reads
  • Putting in some ads.  This site is expensive to run, and the ad revenue helps out.  Unfortunately, some of the better ones (blogads inparticular) requires you have another existing customer recommend you.  So, if any of you that already have blogs and use blogads, if you would like to help a brother out, drop me a line.

Of course, if you have any other suggestions, send them on...I’m open to anything being on the table.

End of an Era

image
Final Bow

Cox & Forkum are giving up on editorial cartoons.

With mixed emotions I announce: John and I will no longer be producing editorial cartoons. John will continue posting his work at his blog, John Cox Art, and he and I will continue working together on various projects, but there will be no more regularly scheduled editorial cartoons. The Web site will remain running indefinitely, as a means to market our books and as an archive of our work.

While I understand the pressures of trying to keep a “day job” as well as provide quality content, I’m sure going to miss their laser-sharp targeting of the issues with a one-panel drawing.

Good luck guys, we’ll sure miss you.

Comments are broken (sort of) **UPDATED**

I have been working with Macker and Dr. Jeff, trying to fix the comments problems.  There is something in the template that is keeping Firefox and Camino users (maybe more) from commenting on a post that has more than 0 comments on it already.

I am working on a fix and will update this post when it is completed.

**UPDATE**
I think I fixed it.  All non-IE users, try commenting here and let me know.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
