Back, Somewhat

Ok, I guess I’m back. I needed a few days off. Got out there and tried to enjoy what little summer we’re having this year. Now that it’s August, that month when NJ usually melts in the sweltering heat and humidity, the leaves are already starting to turn. Looks to me like Fall is coming early this year.

That doesn’t bode so well for my little garden patch, but it will force me to get busy and figure out what kind of perennial bulbs I want to get planted. More tulips and some daffy-dils for the central area. The canna that grew this year came up nice and lush, but they still haven’t bloomed. And if my tendonitis is healed enough, I want to finish the lower garden and get a passel of lilies and irises in there, with maybe a couple dozen gladiolus for some color and height. That’s going to be quite a bit of work, and take another quarter ton of good topsoil to liven up the lifeless dirt down there.

Summer bowling league is drawing to a close. I think tonight is our last night of regular bowling, then we do the last two weeks as finals. We’re about in 2nd place at this point, maybe 3rd by just a point or two. We lost our anchor to a twisted ankle, so we’ll finish the season with a vacancy. Not what I’d want, but that means a nearly 80 point drop in our team average, which can only help us in terms of weekly handicap. And summer league is a 90% handicap.

Looks like I missed out on the Ebola story, although I’ve been following it closely on the news. I don’t want Ebola patients being brought here. As far as I’m concerned, anyone who has been in or near any of the West African nations where the epidemic is within the past month should have a screening before being let onto a ship or plane heading our way, and probably be put in isolation somewhere offshore for 3 weeks just to make sure. Wake up you fools: this is a plague of biblical dimension. Don’t invite the fox into the hen house for tea. On the other hand, I am impressed as all heck that the couple of doses of some R&D medicine given to that doctor and his assistant have enabled such a miraculous recovery. Find those two another few doses, and let’s see if this is actually a cure. And if it is, wow. Just consider the ramifications for a minute. Ebola is a virus, not a bacterium. This new experimental medicine could be the key to unlocking the door to curing a huge host of viral infections, from HIV to the common cold. And that is a medical breakthrough of stupendous scale. World altering scale.

The situation in Israel continues to be a mess. As always, the pressure from our joooo-hating world will force Israel to stop their fight against Hamas before they’ve achieved victory. Please Benji, please don’t listen to them. Get the job done once and for all.

Looks like it’s time to change your passwords on everything again. News today is that the Russian mafia stole passwords and digital credentials on 1.2 BILLION people. 1.2 billion? Come on. That’s probably half the internet population that owns a credit card or does online transactions of any kind. By which I mean that I don’t doubt that the reds did it, and it shows that there really is no such thing as internet security. None. So let’s not be foolish and let our computers do auto-complete on anything. Let’s not allow a single merchant to keep our credit card data. Let’s not even keep our passwords or credit card numbers on our own PCs. Put them on a bit of paper and hide them in a book. Not in your wallet or taped to your keyboard. Let’s all add another “TSA shoe hassle” to our lives and get in the habit of changing all our passwords weekly, and getting and using one-shot virtual credit cards. This sucks.

A 2 star US General was killed and more than a dozen soldiers wounded in an inside-job ambush in Afghanistan. What a non-surprise that one of the “trusted” local troops turned out to be a jihadi in hiding. Let’s stop being stupid over there, m’kay? Train up some of the locals if you must, but keep them well segregated. Sorry, but they simply can not be trusted. And since it’s Obama’s plan to lose this war too, why are we wasting time and lives staying there? Get out now, and destroy every gun, tank, and truck we’re not taking back with us.

ISIS continues to rampage across Syria and Iraq, killing Christians and everyone else who doesn’t bow down to their 7th Century insanity. And the world does nothing. Welcome the Caliphate! They’re going to take over, simply because nobody from the West could be bothered to fight them. And then things will really get dark.

Gee, anyone wonder why I need a few days away from this? I’d go hide in my garden and commune with Mother Nature, but first I have to mix up a batch of poison and spray for bugs. The place is amok with spiders, flies, and those miniscule little bitey bugs. Time to get “mid-evil” on their asses.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
