Another Darwin Winner

What would a day be without another winner in the Darwin Gene Pool Cleansing Contest? Today’s winner is (was) in Britain and he just had to have “just one more cigarette” while being covered in the hospital equivalent of napalm. Which raises the philosophical and linguistic question: how does one say “DUH!” in the British version of English ... ?

Man Killed In Cigarette Accident

A hospital patient being treated with a flammable gel for a skin condition has died after being engulfed in flames as he lit a cigarette. It is believed the 60-year-old was smoking on a fire escape at Doncaster Royal Infirmary on Monday. He was taken to the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield with serious burns but later died.

The hospital is not releasing details, but said: “This is a tragic event. Our hearts go out to his family.” It is understood that hospital staff followed the correct procedures and the incident is being treated as a tragic accident. Patients at the hospital have spoken of their shock following the accident.

Margaret Eastwood, who was there with her husband Colin, said she was horrified. “He should never have been allowed to have a cigarette. “Hospitals are meant to be no smoking but why was he allowed to have a cigarette? I hope there is a thorough investigation. It sounds horrendous.”

A spokeswoman for Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said an investigation had been launched. “Counselling will be made available to staff, patients and family members if required,” she added. A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said there did not appear to be any suspicious circumstances. He added that a report was being prepared for the coroner.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:

1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
