And Over We Go
- 35.4% Of America Is On Welfare
109,631,000 Americans lived in households that received benefits from one or more federally funded “means-tested programs” — also known as welfare — as of the fourth quarter of 2012, according to data released Tuesday by the Census Bureau.
The Census Bureau has not yet reported how many were on welfare in 2013 or the first two quarters of 2014.
But the 109,631,000 living in households taking federal welfare benefits as of the end of 2012, according to the Census Bureau, equaled 35.4 percent of all 309,467,000 people living in the United States at that time.
When those receiving benefits from non-means-tested federal programs — such as Social Security, Medicare, unemployment and veterans benefits — were added to those taking welfare benefits, it turned out that 153,323,000 people were getting federal benefits of some type at the end of 2012.
153 million is almost exactly HALF the population. We. Are. Doomed.
- Ferguson Looter: “We deserve this!”
he National Guard arrived in Ferguson but kept its distance from the streets where protesters clashed again with police, as clouds of tear gas and smoke hung over the St. Louis suburb where Michael Brown was fatally shot by a police officer.
Protesters filled the streets after nightfall Monday, and officers trying to enforce tighter restrictions at times used bullhorns to order them to disperse. Police deployed noisemakers and armored vehicles to push demonstrators back. Officers fired tear gas and flash grenades.
One looter who came out of a QuikTrip told The Washington Post that he was proud of what he was doing.
“I’m proud of us. We deserve this, and this is what’s supposed to happen when there’s injustice in your community,” DeAndre Smith told The Post. “St. Louis — not going to take this anymore.”
A police officer who asked not to be identified labeled it “looting tourism.”
“It’s like they are spending their gas money to come down here and steal,” the officer told The Post.
- Race-based hate crimes against Whites spike in D.C.
Race-based hate crimes jumped in Washington, D.C., last year even as most other types of bias crimes decreased, with analysts saying such incidents could be vastly underreported among minority groups uncomfortable coming forward to authorities.
...
The disclosure comes as a wave of protests and unrest after the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teen by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, has highlighted racial tension in the St. Louis suburb and prompted widespread calls for an evaluation of race relations between communities and their police departments.Isn’t that special?
- Better Get Used To Rice And Beans
Steak (and any beef product even burger) hit all time high price The price index for steak hit its all-time high in the United States in July of 199.104, according to data released today from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
The price index, another measure of the BLS, is a “tool that simplifies the measurement of movements in a numerical series,” states the BLS. “An index for 110, for example, means there has been a 10 percent increase in price since the reference period.”
The BLS measures a consumer price index for uncooked beef steaks in addition to the average price of sirloin steaks. This index (uncooked beef steak) reached its all-time high of 199.104 in July 2014. The index hit 100.0 in August 1998, which means that, since then, the price of uncooked beef steaks has increased 99.104 percent, or nearly doubled.

The average price for all types of ground beef per pound hit its all-time high—$3.884 per pound—in the United States in July, according to data released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).That was up from $3.880 per pound in June. A year ago, in July 2013, the average price for a pound of ground beef was $3.459 per pound. Since then, the average price for a pound of ground beef has gone up 42.1 cents--or about 12 percent.
Five years ago, in July 2009, the average price for a pound of ground beef was $2.147, according to the BLS. In those five years, the average price has climbed by $1.737 per pound--or almost 81 percent.
- Half Of School Employees Don’t Teach: 130% Rise Since 1970
The ranks of non-teachers - such as administrators, counselors, teacher aides and cafeteria workers - has swelled 130 percent since 1970 and they now make up 50 percent of all public school employees ...
...
From 1970 to 2010, the number of students grew by 8.6 percent, while the number of non-teaching personnel increased by 130 percent. Non-teachers now consume over a quarter of all education expenditures, the study found. In addition, America now spends a greater percentage of its education funding on non-teachers than any other country in the world besides Denmark.
A previous study from the Friedman Foundation, The School Staffing Surge, found that “states could have saved more than $24 billion annually if they had increased/decreased the employment of administrators and other non-teaching staff at the same rate as students between 1992 and 2009.”
However, test scores and graduation rates show little evidence of improvement despite the explosive growth of non-teaching positions.
Thank goodness for the teacher’s unions. Look at all these poor folk who would otherwise be unemployed, or worse, have to work in the private sector actually helping their companies turn a profit. And now that we have more than 40 years worth of proof that this approach isn’t working, let’s throw another 100 tons of money at it and try the same thing, but even harder. Why stop at 130%? Let’s go for the full 200!
- Mitt Romney: Obama worse than even I expected
“I’m not running,” Mr. Romney told reporters after the rally. “I’m expecting to be getting behind some good people or a good person who will be [the Republican nominee].”
The former Massachusetts governor has some pointed words for the man who defeated him two years ago, saying President Obama was doing “a good deal worse than even I expected.” He cited the U.S. economy and troubles abroad in such hot spots as Iraq, Syria and Russia.
“I was not a big fan of the president’s policies, as you know, either domestically or internationally,” he said, “but the results of his mistakes and errors, in my opinion, have been more severe than even I would have predicted.”
Gee, ya think?
Dead flat economy, shrinking employment base, rampant inflation on the price of food, half the country on the dole. To say nothing of the world going to Helena Handbasket due to America’s inane and juvenile foreign policy. Wow, that’s change you can believe in, yes sir!
... and a little footnote to what’s happening on the world stage ...
- ISIS Encouraging Ferguson Riots
ISIS militants and their supporters are using social media to encourage protesters in Ferguson to embrace radical Islam and fight against the U.S. government.
Jihadists in Syria and Iraq and their sympathisers in the West have taken to Twitter to send messages of support to hundreds of demonstrators taking part in a ninth night of angry protests in the U.S. city following the shooting by police of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown.
The militants’ tweets denounce local officers for the way they have attempted to quell the violence, make reference to historic acts of police brutality, and even use the hashtag #FergusonUnderISIS in an attempt to get angry young men in the city to declare allegiance to the Islamist group.
The news comes as footage purportedly taken from the scene of the Ferguson protests appeared to show one demonstrator marching along a street holding a sign reading ‘ISIS is here’.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.
- Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
