Spring Has Sprung

Three bits of news flying a bit below the radar ...

So much for Obama’s Arab Spring. Libya has become a anarchist hellhole. Thanks ever so much, Barry.

A little under two years ago, Philip Hammond, the Defence Secretary, urged British businessmen to begin “packing their suitcases” and to fly to Libya to share in the reconstruction of the country and exploit an anticipated boom in natural resources.

Yet now Libya has almost entirely stopped producing oil as the government loses control of much of the country to militia fighters.

Mutinying security men have taken over oil ports on the Mediterranean and are seeking to sell crude oil on the black market. Ali Zeidan, Libya’s Prime Minister, has threatened to “bomb from the air and the sea” any oil tanker trying to pick up the illicit oil from the oil terminal guards, who are mostly former rebels who overthrew Muammar Gaddafi and have been on strike over low pay and alleged government corruption since July.

...

Libyans are increasingly at the mercy of militias which act outside the law. Popular protests against militiamen have been met with gunfire; 31 demonstrators were shot dead and many others wounded as they protested outside the barracks of “the Libyan Shield Brigade” in the eastern capital Benghazi in June.

Though the Nato intervention against Gaddafi was justified as a humanitarian response to the threat that Gaddafi’s tanks would slaughter dissidents in Benghazi, the international community has ignored the escalating violence. The foreign media, which once filled the hotels of Benghazi and Tripoli, have likewise paid little attention to the near collapse of the central government.

Oh, well done.

We paid how much??? A billion? And most of it went to the Dem’s buddy, the guy in charge it now seems like we want to depose? Or nuke, bomb, or send nasty letters to? What’s up with that??

U.S. Spent $1,010,354,195 on Syrian Humanitarian Aid 2012-2013

U.S. taxpayers have spent at least $1,010,354,195 on Syrian humanitarian aid for fiscal years 2012 and 2013, according to official numbers from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

USAID, which was created by President John F. Kennedy, is the federal government’s primary agency in charge of distributing civilian foreign aid.

Last month, President Barack Obama pledged $195 million in additional humanitarian support to Syrians affected by the country’s civil war, tipping U.S. taxpayer spending over the $1 billion threshold.

“To help the many Syrians in need this Eid al-Fitr, the United States is providing an additional $195 million in food aid and other humanitarian aid, bringing our humanitarian contribution to the Syrian people to over $1 billion since the crisis began,” Obama said in a White House statement. “For millions of Americans, Eid is part of a great tapestry of America’s many traditions, and I wish all Muslims a blessed and joyful celebration. Eid Mubarak.”

Hark unto Captain Bullshit, above.

“The vast majority of aid is going to territory controlled by President Bashar al-Assad, and the small amount reaching opposition-held areas is all but invisible,” the New York Times reported.

Humanitarian workers in Syria like Ghassan Hitto, the chief coordinator for the Western-backed Syrian national coalition, say they are frustrated with the poorly-run relief efforts.

“We believe we are owed an explanation over where this money is going, but every time we ask, we can’t get an answer.”

This is how it works in any tin-pot dictatorship we flood with cash. Nearly all of it gets stolen by the leaders, and the rest is used as a weapon against the local opposition. Every. Single. Time. So let’s do it again, harder. Idiots.

That terrible military junta in Egypt ... is kicking the shi-ite out of the Muslim Brotherhood. Ooorah!

Egypt launches Sinai offensive targeting Islamic militant hideouts

Egyptian helicopter gunships and tanks pounded suspected hideouts of Islamic militants in the northern Sinai Peninsula on Saturday, in what officials described as a major new offensive in the insurgent stronghold. Residents who witnessed winding columns of trucks and armoured vehicles pour into the area said the operation was one of the largest there in years.

A security official said “dozens” of insurgent suspects were killed and wounded in the Sinai offensive, which comes two days after a failed suicide bombing targeting the country’s top policeman in Cairo. Smoke could be seen rising from the towns of Rafah and Sheikh Zuweyid, and troops set up a cordon to prevent militants from escaping as others combed the area, he said.

The northern Sinai, which adjoins Israel and the Palestinian Gaza Strip, has long been a haven for militants including al-Qaida-inspired groups. Attacks have spiked in the area since Morsi’s July 3 ouster, prompting the latest army offensive.

In the past, militants used a vast network of underground tunnels linking Egypt with Gaza as a way to escape security crackdowns. However, over the past two months, the military has destroyed more than 80 per cent of them, stemming the flow of weapons, militants and goods into Gaza, a territory under an Israeli-imposed blockade.
...
The government says it is waging a “war on terrorism” against both the Sinai militants and supporters of Morsi, whose Muslim Brotherhood has organized street demonstrations to protest his overthrow and government assaults on protest encampments. Some followers have also staged apparent retaliatory attacks against police stations, churches, and other targets.

whale of a tale

image

clicky opens a whale sized version

Migaloo, the white Humpback whale from Australia, spotted recently breaching. The picture at imgur has received nearly 1.2 million views in less than 20 hours.

This extremely rare whale, about 28 years old, was long thought to be the only albino Humpback in the world, but it seems he has bred, and now there’s another one.

How many other whales have their own websites? This fellow has several of them. Very popular down under.

Migaloo, the world-famous white humpback whale, has reportedly been spotted on the annual mass whale migration to the Great Barrier Reef.

The 14m-long albino male, previously the only documented white humpback whale on the planet, is a star feature of the 12,000km journey

This time he is again joined by another, as yet unnamed, white whale.

Known by the aboriginal word Migaloo, or “white fella”, the acrobatic animal is believed to have spawned at least one all-white offspring after a white humpback calf was photographed in the Whitsundays in 2011.

Scientists are trying to obtain DNA samples from Migaloo and the newcomer to confirm if they are related.

If so, experts say, it would be an incredibly rare natural phenomenon.

Experts have predicted as many as 16,000 humpback whales have been making their way north for the annual migration into warm Great Barrier Reef waters for the mating and calving season.

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority has received 45 reports of whale sightings from the public during the past couple of weeks, ranging from Mackay to north to Cape Tribulation.

The whales have been putting on quite a show for sailing boats off Mission Beach, with clear waters bringing the big sea mammals closer to shore, much to the delight of tourists.

Neat. Still, 1.2 million views in less than a day. Seems like everybody likes Migaloo. Somebody better get Fat Les to update his tune with some alternate lyrics.

Migaloo, Migaloo
Migaloo, Migaloo, na na,
Migaloo, Migaloooooooo
And we all like Migaloo ...

Better Late Than Never

Stolen from Theo’s, who copied it from somebody else who found it on YouTube.

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, was last week. Hope everyone had a great time.

I thought this was a very cute, inventive recycle of Shakira’s tune from the 2010 World Cup.

The Fountainheads are a group of young Israeli singers, dancers, and musicians, all graduates and students of the Ein Prat Academy for Leadership, who have joined forces to create new Jewish artistic content for today’s Jewish world.

Through their videos and live performances, the Fountainheads’ work is enjoyed by millions of people all over the world. The Fountainheads perform at special events, trips, concerts, weddings, and simchas in Israel, and also tour overseas a few times a year.

Your AM Laugh

A bit of humour from over there, thanks to KJM.

An 8.1 earthquake hits the Middle East. Two million Muslims die and over a million are injured.

Iraq and Iran are totally ruined, and the governments don’t know where to start providing help to rebuild.

The rest of the world is in shock.

The USA is sending troops to help.

Saudi Arabia is sending oil.

Latin American countries are sending supplies.

New Zealand is sending sheep, cattle and food crops.

The Asian countries are sending labour to assist in rebuilding the infrastructure.

Canada is sending medical teams and supplies.

Great Britian is sending two million replacement Muslims.

Yemeni child bride, eight, dies of internal injuries.

I think the quote by Tom of Swansea, UK could easily cover this topic as well as it did my previous post.  One thing to be certain of is, this poor victim of a deranged and uncivilized place will not have been the first.

Yemeni child bride, eight, dies of internal injuries on first night of forced marriage to groom five times her age

‘Rawan’ died in the tribal area of Hardh, which borders Saudi Arabia
Activists have called for groom and family to be arrested over her death
One activist: ‘Groom is an animal who deserved to be punished severely’

By Matt Blake

An eight-year-old child bride has died in Yemen of internal bleeding sustained during her wedding night after being forced to marry a man five times her age, activists have claimed.

The girl, identified only as Rawan, died in the tribal area of Hardh in northwestern Yemen, which borders Saudi Arabia.

Activists are now calling for the groom, who is believed to be around 40 years old, and her family to be arrested so they can face justice in the courts.

They say arrests would help put a stop to the practice of marrying very young girls to older men in the impoverished region.

Angry Man, a blogger, posted that the man was ‘an animal who deserved to be punished severely for his crime’.

‘All those who supported such a crime should also be punished,’ he added.

The practice of marrying young girls is widespread in Yemen and has attracted the attention of international rights groups seeking to pressure the government to outlaw child marriages.

Yemen’s gripping poverty plays a role in hindering efforts to stamp out the practice, as poor families find themselves unable to say no to ‘bride-prices’ that can be hundreds of dollars for their daughters.

More than a quarter of Yemen’s females marry before age 15, according to a report in 2010 by the Social Affairs Ministry.

Tribal custom also plays a role, including the belief that a young bride can be shaped into an obedient wife, bear more children and be kept away from temptation.

In September 2010, a 12-year-old Yemeni child-bride died after struggling for three days in labour to give birth, a local human rights organisation said.

Yemen once set 15 as the minimum age for marriage, but parliament annulled that law in the 1990s, saying parents should decide when a daughter marries.

rebels including al-Qaeda-linked fighters have gained control of a Christian village .

Playing catch up ....  too much mail unattended for days.

Govt. troops ousted finally ousted rebels here. For how long I wonder.

Caught this item ... doesn’t surprise us.

David Cameron, the Brit PM has been urging Obama to act against Assad and bomb Syria. The French are eager to follow.
They will certainly be in bed with strange bedfellows if they decide to oust President Assad. And even though Obama says that is not the plan, who believes that?

This comment in the Daily Mail sums it all up pretty well.

This is news? It’s been going on for thousands of years in this part of the world. The names change, the boundaries change , the allegiances changed. The song remains the same. We can only do so much. But sacrificing our precious youth, sacrificing the hard earned pay of people struggling to make ends meet, is too high a price. Try telling the parents with a body bag in front of them that we’re all in it together.

- Tom , Swansea,

Syrian village is ‘liberated’ by rebels… who then forced Christians to convert to Islam

Syrian rebels including al-Qaeda-linked fighters have gained control of a Christian village north-east of the capital Damascus
Government media has provided a different account suggesting regime forces are winning
The battle is taking place in Maaloula, a scenic mountain village where people still speak the ancient Middle Eastern language of Aramaic

By Mail Foreign Service

Terrified Christians claim Syrian rebels ordered them to convert to Islam on pain of death when they ‘liberated’ their ancient village.

Opposition forces, including fighters linked to Al Qaeda, gained temporary control of the Christian village of Maaloula after fighting with regime forces.

The reports have reignited fears about western support for the rebel groups, which are increasingly being infiltrated by Islamic extremists.

Unbelievably Good

We went down to get some Thai food tonight, a bit late for dinner at 8:15, but the restaurant was having a slow night so they closed early. Rats.

So we “had” to go across the street to the sushi place. We had the place to ourselves, so we sat at the bar and let the staff entertain us with their culinary creations. And my, did they.

One of the things we had was half a dozen Kunamoto oysters on the half shell. These are always the nicest oysters when you can find them, but instead of just shucking them and serving them up with lemon, the chef added a little touch of sauce - brown sauce or ponzu, I’m not sure - and a single leaf of fresh cilantro with the smallest dab of black caviar on top. And that changed everything.

image

almost like this, only caviar instead of a bead of sriracha sauce

Amazing. I could not believe how much just a single leaf of cilantro could change the flavor. Could transform the flavor. Expand it. Words fail me. But the next time I go anywhere to get some raw oysters, I’m bringing some cilantro. And maybe my little bottle of ponzu sauce. It’s in the back of the fridge, somewhere.

Here is some sad news for oyster fans. We found Apalachicola FL by accident on a vacation when I was about 12. Best oysters ever, although we did have to wait around a bit for our lunch ... because the oyster boat wasn’t back in from the bay yet. Can’t beat that for freshness. And soon, they may be gone forever.

Pushing Back In The East End

Over The River and Through The Bridge

2nd Time’s The Charm As English Defence League Marches Deep Into

Sharia-run London’s East End

h/t Gates of Vienna

image

The English Defence League marched across Tower Bridge in London today and held a demo on the outskirts of the heavily enriched borough of Tower Hamlets. As usual, Muslim and UAF protesters scuffled with police while attempting to reach the EDL demonstrators. Tommy Robinson, the leader of the EDL, was arrested for incitement [his speech ran 5 minutes over his allotted time] and was still being held at the police station this evening.

image

To Tower Bridge for the EDL’s second attempt to march and demonstrate against sharia law and other nasties in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

Frankly, this was 1936 in reverse. In 1936 Sir Oswald Mosley and his blackshirts of the British Union of Fascists wanted to march (in uniform, as well) from the Tower Of London to Victoria Park (which straddles the two boroughs of Hackney and Bethnal Green). They tried several routes but were stopped at Whitechapel and in Cable Street, which being so far south was not an obvious route to take. The police advised Mosley to turn back and the march was cancelled. While the incident is known as the Battle of Cable Street most of the old newsreel showing the fighting was filmed by the Royal Mint and at Gardener’s Corner, outside a department store (long gone) at the junction of Commercial Road and Aldgate.

Then, the blackshirts marched on the East End and were stopped. Now the black flags of jihad and anarchy, the black veils and cloaks of sharia hold the East End and it was the descendants of the Londoners who stopped Mosley who were trying to enter.

Naturally all sorts of counter-protests went off, though the police kept things from turning into a riot. The nerve of these EDL types, wanting White Christian Europe to remain White Christian Europe. How dare they!?!

image

I am no expert in understanding what the EDL (and by extension, all the other European nation’s Defense Leagues) are all about ... but they get painted with some pretty vile colors in the press. Fascists, racists, moronic skinheads, violent drunkards and layabouts. The New KKK. And worse. And yet they seem to be just about the only groups on the whole continent who understand that their cultures are being destroyed by PC and the pisslamic infitada/diaspora. They are against letting Europe become Eurabia, so probably I should give them my support.

Tommy has a go. The good stuff starts at 4:20

another part. can’t seem to find the whole speech yet

Meanwhile ... Sweden rolls over and slits its own throat?

Sweden grants blanket asylum to Syrian refugees

Sweden on Tuesday became the first European Union country to announce it will give asylum to all Syrian refugees who apply.

“All Syrian asylum seekers who apply for asylum in Sweden will get it,” Annie Hoernblad, the spokesperson for Sweden’s migration agency, told AFP.

“The agency made this decision now because it believes the violence in Syria will not end in the near future.”

The decision, which will give refugees permanent resident status, is valid until further notice, added Hoernblad.

Until now, Sweden could only house refugees temporarily for three years, after each individual case was evaluated by the state.

The agency expects that the “vast majority of Syrian nationals who today have provisional status will apply for permanent status,” said Hoernblad.

Those granted permanent status will also be allowed to bring their families to Sweden.

The move came as the United Nations said the number of refugees fleeing the conflict in Syria had passed two million, which the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, called “the great tragedy of this century”.

Since 2012, Sweden has taken in some 14,700 asylum seekers from Syria.

So with a stroke of a pen, Sweden just became Palestine II. And while they think they’re doing a great act of humanitarianism, what they’ve really done is far more than let the camel’s nose into the tent. They’ve just flushed 1300 years of their own culture down the crapper, and invited the vampires into their homes. Horry Clap. I give them 5 years, 10 at the most. What’s the point of any EDL if the governments are going to cave this forcefully? Do none of these idiots see the problems that are guaranteed to come along, hand in glove, with this act? Do they pay no attention at all to the crime stats next door in Norway?

Sometimes, I just want to give up.

Best Air Freshener Ever

Fresh baked bread. Makes everything smell better all over the house. Yum.

I had a half a hand of bananas that were getting a bit on the too spotty side, so it was time to make some banana nut bread. It’s very simple, and it always comes out great. This is not the light and fluffy kind of banana bread. It’s the solid stuff.

Grease up a meatloaf pan with Crisco or butter. Preheat the oven to 350°F

2 cups of white flour
3/4 tsp kosher salt
3/4 cup white sugar
1 tsp baking soda

2 eggs
3 large or 4 medium very ripe bananas
2/3 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

Sift all the dry ingredients together in a large bowl. In a small bowl, whisk up the eggs. In a medium bowl, mash the peeled bananas with a fork.

Add the small bowl to the medium bowl, mix it up with a fork. Add the medium bowl to the large bowl, beat until smooth with power mixer. Add the nuts, and beat another 15 seconds.

Pour mix into pan, bake for an hour. Check it at 45 and 55 minutes if your oven runs hot.

Mob of Black Teens Kills White Iowa Fisherman

Also Beats Would-Be Rescuers

Horrible. And highly  racist of me  honest of me to mention the colors involved. This was a hate crime, pure and simple. Mob violence against an innocent bystander, just for the fun of it. This happens every day in America, with the blessing of our pResident, his chief officers, and the compliant and utterly biased media.  In case you haven’t figured it out yet, there is a race war going on in America. It’s almost exclusively one directional, and while it’s still small scale it gets bigger every month. And it’s beyond high time to speak truth to power and call a spade a spade.

image

arrested and charged with murder: Russell, Shorter, Tyler

Police are still trying to figure out why a black mob beat to death a Des Moines, Iowa, man at a popular downtown fishing spot one week ago.

Richard Daughenbaugh, a father of six and construction worker, did not know his killers, say police. But at 1 a.m., he found himself exchanging words with members of a mob that numbered in the dozens.

The Des Moines Register picks up the narrative with a sterile account that understates the violence and ignores the race of the attackers:

“The suspects allegedly beat Daughenbaugh using no weapons other than their own bodies while others in the group tried to stop anyone from helping, police said,” the paper reported. “A woman fishing nearby tried to step in and stop the assault and was struck, police said. Her companion was attacked as he jumped in to defend her. And when the woman tried to call 911, two women from the group allegedly grabbed her phone and threw it. She eventually retrieved it and called 911.”

Translation: Several people beat Daughenbaugh. Several people beat the fishermen who tried to help. And several people beat the witnesses who tried to dial 911. And lots of others watched and cheered.

Richard Daughenbaugh died soon after.

image

Officers found Richard Daughenbaugh, 40, severely beaten in a parking lot near the Center Street bridge around 1 a.m. Sunday. He later died from his injuries at a local hospital.

The medical examiner ruled the cause of death as undetermined.

Des Moines Police Sgt. Jason Halifax said Daughenbaugh apparently got into a verbal altercation with one of the three suspects; Halifax declined to say which one. The altercation turned physical when one of the men attacked Daughenbaugh. The other two men – and likely several others – joined in.

“We feel there are probably more and if we can file charges, we will,” Halifax said.

Besides the three charged, there were apparently several dozen people gathered in the parking lot during the beating.

Police received only one 911 call, from a woman fishing with her boyfriend, who apparently tried to stop the attack. She was hit while trying to step in. Her boyfriend tried to defend her and was assaulted as well.

Le’Prese Derrion Williams, 21, of Des Moines, was charged with willful injury for that attack. Two others, Shanayia Hamer, 22, and Franreca Woods, 18, were charged with first-degree theft for allegedly taking and throwing the woman’s cell phone when she tried calling 911.

Detectives don’t know why the group had gathered and don’t know what Daughenbaugh was doing in the area.

“I don’t think we’ll ever really know,” Halifax said.

While some in the crowd were reportedly gang members, police said they don’t believe the beating was gang-related. There is no indication Daughenbaugh had anything to do with any gangs or knew anyone involved in the beating, Halifax said.

Fuck This I Quit

The U.S. economy added just 169,000 jobs in August, fewer than forecast and a number that will surely complicate the Fed’s decision over when and how to start scaling back its easy-money policies.

The headline unemployment rate fell to 7.3%, according to numbers released Friday by the U.S. Department of Labor, down slightly from July’s rate of 7.4%. But the lower August rate was once again caused by significant numbers of Americans leaving the workforce.

The labor force participation rate fell again last month, dipping to 63.2%, the lowest rate since the mid-1970s.

Economists had forecast an increase of 180,000 jobs and that the rate would hold steady at 7.4%.

Todd M. Schoenberger, managing partner at LandColt Capital LP in New York, described Friday’s data as “demoralizing and sad to the unemployed.”

I had the most awesome post built for this. Not only did I artfully piss and moan about deceptive reporting, I laid out a 9 point plan to revitalize the nation, covering everything from environmental policy to the War On Drugs to nationalism and jobs training/ life skills training as part of the education system, to (trans)gender politics.

And I hit publish, and it all went to hell.

So fuck it. I can’t waste another 90 minutes rewriting it.  And I’m sure you can solve the economy yourself. It’s easy. Dump Obamacare, shrink the government, it’s laws, and it’s taxes. Teach people to work and to build. Restore national pride and get the business axiom pointed back at healthy companies that employ citizens instead of some BS stockholder’s equity fixation.

There. I’ve given you the starting steps. Figure out the rest yourself.

We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
