FROM VISITOR TO PRISONER IN SIX YEARS ……… THE VOLCANO AND ME

Well the radio says the ban is to Monday. So the 0700 time frame here is already out of date.

THE GODS WHOEVER THEY MAY BE, DO NOT WANT ME TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY.  I AM BEGINNING TO FEEL LIKE “THE PRISONER.”

Volcanic ash cloud: UK flight ban worsens

Hopes that flights would resume have been dashed after the “worsening” volcanic ash cloud led to a further ban on UK flights until at least 0700 on Sunday.

By Nick Britten, David Millward and Alastair Jamieson
Published: 8:43AM BST 17 Apr 2010

More than a million British airline passengers have been left stranded or had their plans disrupted by the volcanic ash cloud sweeping across Europe.

Hopes had been raised that some flights might be available in Scotland and northern England for six hours between 4am and 10am today, and airlines have drawn up plans to use buses to get passengers to Scotland to make transatlantic flights.

But early this morning air traffic control company Nats said that after reviewing the “worsening” situation, restrictions had been reapplied until at least 1am Sunday except for a small number of domestic flights within Scotland.

Airspace in parts of Ireland is open for a limited number of flights, and restrictions are due to be lifted from all Irish airspace at 7pm.

* Volcanic ash cloud: latest travel news

With the skies over Britain having been almost entirely closed for two days, the British airline industry is in the grip of an unprecedented shutdown. An estimated 500,000 people pass through British airports every day. For the past 48 hours, almost all have seen their flights cancelled by the fallout from the Icelandic volcano.

Well no kidding

Yet another reason for BMEWS to have the “No shit, Sherlock” category. As in, “tell us something that we don’t already know, m’kay?”

External Explosion Sunk South Korean Navy Ship

An “external explosion” probably sank the South Korean naval vessel which went down near North Korean waters last month, an investigator says.

“The possibility of an external explosion is far higher than that of an internal explosion,” Yoon Duk-yong told a news conference in Seoul.

He was speaking a day after the stern section of the ship was raised from the seabed. Fifty-eight crew survived, but more than 40 sailors died. Salvage workers found 36 bodies in the shattered hull of the Cheonan, a 1,200-tonne navy gunboat, which sank in mysterious circumstances three weeks ago. Two more bodies were recovered earlier, and another eight sailors remain unaccounted for.

During a briefing in Seoul, South Korea’s investigative team said the sinking of the Cheonan did not appear to have been caused by an on-board accident or by running aground.

“There is a high possibility of an external explosion rather than an internal explosion,” said Yoon Duk-yong, co-head of a state investigation team. “A strong force was applied to the left side of the ship, leaving the hull and iron sheets curved inward. This kind of destruction is caused by an external explosion.”

He said evidence gathered from wreckage showed a low probability that the ship had sunk because of an internal blast, metal fatigue or collision with a reef. The ship’s ammunition room, its fuel tank and diesel engine room were not damaged, he said, noting that there was no indication of an internal fire.

North Korea has for decades disputed its border in the Yellow Sea with the South. Known as the Northern Limit Line, it was drawn by the U.S. military at the end of the Korean War in 1953.

The North cultivates a reputation for hair-trigger belligerence. Last year, it ignored U.N. resolutions by exploding its second nuclear device, launching a long-range ballistic missile and test-firing a number of short-range missiles into international waters.

Given to rhetorical excess, it often threatens South Korea and the United States with “all-out war.” The North has also said it has the ability to turn metropolitan Seoul, with a population of about 22 million and located just 35 miles from the border, into “a sea of fire.”

That is not an empty threat, according to many military analysts.

North Korea has moved about 70 percent of its military units and up to 80 percent of its artillery to within 60 miles of the border, according to the Strategic Studies Institute, a research arm of the U.S. Army War College.

Reprisals? You betcha. But subtle ones. Perhaps the NorKs merchant fleet will start being lost while far at sea after suddenly, mysteriously, losing radio communication. Perhaps the South can leverage the US to stop selling the NorKs fuel oil and food for a few seasons. But don’t expect anything too overt. Not right now.

WEEKEND WOMEN ….

Something a bit different to start WW with.
I found this young lady about two weeks ago and was spellbound.  That isn’t surprising as most women do that to me anyway, but most especially the women from this part of the world. What really made me take an interest though, looks aside, was her talent. She started at the age of 6, at 14 moved to Canada and now lives in NY.  She is ....

HERE SHE IS AT AGE 10 if the info was correct.  Which means she’s only been at this four years. So this is pretty darn good I’d say. A natural talent.

A peek inside?

Reading the Tea (party) Leaves?

A nice quick read over at Pajamas Media where Rick Moran takes a somewhat academic look in on the internal tensions illustrated by the Tea Party movement. It all boils down to “We, the People” but you need the explanations to see that in the right way.

Follow on discussion in the comments is pretty good too, initiated by a fantastic counterpoint essay by reader Winston Smith. Um, I meant Michael Smith, comment #3.

And it’s very nice to see that a large number of the voices have no faith in either party.

A two party system is a control system, not a political system. A distraction. The curtain behind which the power elite hides.  (comment #1)

Fight the power, man.

My Doctor, My Slave

News Item: Obama Signs $18 Billion Unemployment Benefit Extension Bill

Yeah, so what? Another payout plan based on money the government doesn’t have. Give the RECENTLY out of work folks another year or two of benefits. WTF, give them 5 years. 10 years. Who cares?

PS - casually riding along on this bill is a measure to get Medicaid payment back up to their previously poor payment levels. While the news is saying that they were “threatening” to lower them 21%, I know for a fact from 3 doctors in my area that the payments dropped 21-23% the MOMENT obamacare passed. Of course, that was AFTER their employee health insurance premiums went up a full THIRD at the end of the year, in expectation of obamacare passing.

So the government can pay whatever they feel like on Medicaid payments. Which is why we had that bit of story last week with the doctor who put the “take your business elsewhere” sign in his office. Many doctors refuse Medicaid. It’s a hassle, and a money loosing proposition, and they have all sorts of flaming hoops to jump through when treating one of those patients just to avoid getting sued.

So how would you like to be a doctor in a state ... or a country ... that REQUIRES you to accept Medicaid patients at any and all times AS A CONDITION OF LICENSING?

A bill currently under review by the state Senate in Massachusetts will make participation in the state and federal Medicare/Medicaid programs a condition of medical licensure, effectively making physicians employees of the state:

Every health care provider licensed in the commonwealth which provides covered services to a person covered under “Affordable Health Plans” must provide such service to any such person, as a condition of their licensure, and must accept payment at the lowest of the statutory reimbursement rate, an amount equal to the actuarial equivalent of the statutory reimbursement rate, or the applicable contract rate with the carrier for the carrier’s product offering with the lowest level benefit plan available to the general public within the Connector, other than the young adult plan, and may not balance bill such person for any amount in excess of the amount paid by the carrier pursuant to this section, other than applicable co-payments, co-insurance and deductibles.

So what this means is that in order for doctors to become licensed in Massachusetts, they will have to agree to accepting the payment rates imposed by the government, even though those payments may not cover their actual expenses for the care rendered.

I’d call it slavery. Some form of indentured servitude at the very least. Because there is NOTHING that is a) going to stop the feds from passing such a requirement, b) having passed it, they can then drop the Medicaid/Obamacaid payment to whatever they want, even ZERO, and c) once every employer in the country drops their employee health plans, as you know that they pretty much have to do out of economic necessity, thus forcing all their employees - ie, all of us - to sign up for Obamacare/caid/public option health insurance, then we’re all on the same bandwagon. Which means that everyone is now on the government plan, which means that doctors will now be paid whatever the government wants for every single patient they see.

Which is really no different than indentured servitude if the government pays them anything. And it’s slavery if the government pays them nothing. But they can’t turn any patients away, ever. And they probably won’t allowed to quit either.

Socialism, Communism, Fascism, Obamunism. Call it whatever you want, it’s all the same: an all powerful government, with a tyrant in charge.

How’s that for Change You Can Believe In working for you? Give up Hope yet, sucka?

image

Oh, and since the government now owns the means of production and the means of finance, and the president seems to have the power to fire the head of GM when he felt like it, what the effity-eff makes you think that this kind of salary capping won’t extend to whatever other industry the government wants it to? Bankers, brokers, executives, washroom attendants. Anybody. As long as they don’t belong to a union I guess.

See how easy it is to gain momentum and take all the other boulders with you once you leap over the edge and start the avalanche?

People with breathing conditions urged to stay indoors as volcanic ash begins falling on Britain

By Liz Hazelton
Last updated at 3:25 PM on 16th April 2010

People with breathing problems were today advised to stay inside as ash from the volcanic cloud that has paralysed Europe’s airlines fell on the UK.

With no signs of the dust storm abating, medical experts said that those with respiratory diseases should also keep their medication with them at all time.

There had earlier been conflicting advice about the health dangers associated with the dust as one spokesman for the World Health Organisation had issued a blanket warning that everyone should stay inside.

But later in the day, the UN agency gave revised advice, falling into line with the Health Protection Agency (HPA) in Britain and doctors.

A sensible precaution or elf ‘n’ safety paranoia?

By Richard Littlejohn
Last updated at 2:36 PM on 16th April 2010

There was something strangely symbolic about the Icelandic fug which brought Britain’s airports to a standstill yesterday.

I have visions of the Banki hankipanki burning the IOUs shortly before the fraud squad burst through the door, scattering the accumulated savings of the gullible into the atmosphere.

The grounding of all commercial flights across the United Kingdom had a metaphorical symmetry with the collapse of the financial system.

With depressing predictability, the British authorities responded with their usual impersonation of headless chickens in hi-viz jackets.

It was a breathtaking demonstration of the elf ‘n’ safety paranoia which has engulfed this country over the past decade.

No doubt there was a risk of volcanic ash clogging up the jet engines of airliners. But did that justify the knee-jerk stupidity which closed every airport immediately?

The decision to shut down the south of England was taken when the dust cloud was still north of the Outer Hebrides.

Was there really an imminent danger of planes falling out of the sky like flies? Or was this just another manifestation of the ‘can’t be too careful’ culture which seeks to erase every scintilla of chance from our everyday lives?

Look, I know the default position of this column is scepticism, but TV news was showing film taken within the ash clouds over Scandinavia. You could see the wings of the plane the footage was shot from.

Why was it safe for that reconnaissance aircraft to fly into the eye of the storm and not safe for the 11.15 from Gatwick to take off for Madrid?

Our society is now so risk-averse that yesterday we learned that a supermarket butcher has been banned from boning meat with a sharp knife because he might cut himself.

You couldn’t make it up. This ludicrous mentality is sadly commonplace,

Pssst. Got a light?

Mayor makes public apology for comparing illegal immigrants to sperm on Facebook.

Booting way earlier then normal for me but felt compelled to share this bit of bullshit.  I can’t believe anyone would want to make some sort of big deal out of this, and it just shows you all how far down this path humans (at least here in the UK) have fallen.  How much more pol. correct and how many more apologies must be made before someone with some sense say, that’s enough, damn it.  Sorry folks, but this sort of thing just gets the old dander up. RCOB.
Yeah I know, compared to lots of other things going on, so on and so forth.  Still, doesn’t mean this isn’t maddening. Stupid too.

Maybe if I had taken the time to grab that morning coffee first. Nahhh. I’d still be PO’d.

A mayor has made a public apology after posting a joke online comparing illegal immigrants to sperm.

By Laura Roberts
Published: 7:30AM BST 16 Apr 2010

Sue Mills, mayor of Great Torrington market town in Devon, made the posting on her Facebook page.

The 50 year-old wrote: “Illegal immigrants are like sperm - millions of them come in but only one works.”

The mayor said her comments were made in a private capacity and could only be seen by the 380 “friends” on the site.

She said: “I accept the comments on my page were out of character and never intended to cause offence.

“It was intended as a bit of fun and not designed to upset anyone. I wish to publicly apologise for this mistake and deeply regret any upset I mayhave caused.”

Michael Tyghe, the town clerk, said: “We are having a meeting to discuss the situation. There may be a comment from the council then. I have known Sue for sometime now and one thing she is not is racist. This is just a regrettable mistake in my opinion.”

Cllr Mills has been on Great Torrington Town Council for seven years and became the deputy mayor in 2007 before becoming mayor in May 2009.

SOURCE FOR THE STUPIDITY

I thought that was damn funny btw.  It was nothing to say sorry over. And it was not a mistake damn it. It was a funny line and true or not people can’t run around apologizing for every word said on the chance that one line or one word will offend.  If anyone takes offense at her line, then they have too much time on their hands to become offended and aren’t working. More likely receiving benefits in the form of council houses and weekly out of work cash benefits etc.
And for the town clerk to announce a “meeting to discuss the situation,” also shows how stupid ppl have become and how much they have bowed to PC.
Notice how easily the association to race is made here as well. That’s interesting.  She referred to ‘illegal immigrants’ not anyone in particular of any one racial group.  Illegals also come from countries with large white populations. So where exactly does a defense of racial attitudes come into this?
Even if she had referred directly to illegals coming from Jamaica or Africa, or some muslim countries where her comment would more then likely be right on the money, she still would have required NO defense based on race.  Jeesh. A simple funny joke and a town council has to have a freekin meeting. JERKS!

For her part, she makes things worse by saying sorry. That implies she did or said something wrong.
The world is a mad fuckin place and doesn’t show signs of getting better.  Not with this kind of thinking it doesn’t.
I need my coffee.

Oh ,,, I haven’t taken the milk and eggs in from the front porch yet.
See? told ya I booted early.

BEST WAY TO GET EVEN IS TO DO WELL AND SUCCEED …

I’m always tempted to say it’s amazing how cruel kids can be. Then a quick stop and think reminds me that it isn’t amazing at all.  They simply are.

I hope this young lady goes on to big things and has success at whatever she does, and rubs her tormentors noses in her success.
She’s a doll, even with a little bit of weight on her.

Teenager who was bullied for being ‘fat and ugly’ has last laugh as she reaches final in modelling contest

By Daily Mail Reporter

A teenager told yesterday how she triumphed over school bullies who branded her ‘fat’ and drove her to bulimia - after making the finals of a national modelling contest.

Pretty brunette Emily Cooper, 19, was bullied remorselessly in school by gangs of girls both in the playground and on social networking site Bebo.

Despite weighing just 12 stone the 5ft 7in tall the teen was called ‘fat and ugly’ and nicknamed ‘cankles’ because of the size of her ankles.

The bullies ridiculed Emily on a daily basis and during school trips to an ice-skating rink tried forcing her into a tiny mini-skirt to laugh at her size.

[Drew: This is the first time in 200 years that the volcano has erupted through the Eyjafjallajokull glacier. Free caulk to the first person who can actually pronounce “Eyjafjallajokull”. Volcanologists are worried that a nearby sister volcano may also go off, as usually happens.

A bigger worry is Katla, which in the past has erupted in tandem with Eyjafjallajokull. The last major eruption took place in 1918, and volcanologists say a new blast is overdue.

‘So far there have been no signs of the reawakening of the Katla volcano, but a lot of things can still happen, so we are monitoring it quite closely,’ Einarsson said.

UPDATE: Flight ban extended until Friday, maybe longer!

Air traffic control service (Nats) said its next review would be at 0230 BST but the situation was “not improving”.

Medication

The volcano’s eruption is intensifying, and the wind direction is expected to continue bringing clouds of ash into UK and European airspace for some time to come - safety group Eurocontrol said the problem could persist for 48 hours.

...

The UK’s airspace restriction was the worst in living memory, a spokesman said.

...

Volcanic ash is expected to reach ground level over the UK, starting in Scotland on Thursday evening before moving south over the course of the night.

Health Protection Scotland said those with existing respiratory conditions such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema and asthma should ensure they have any inhalers or other medications with them.

I’d say get a dust mask or a respirator ASAP. Stay indoors and hope it rains.

A rarity in government

And they say that a government program, once established, lasts forever. Here’s part of one that seems to have fallen by the wayside.

In 1903 an Act of Congress established the National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice (NBPRP), in an effort to train the citizenry in the art of shooting. In 1921 that task was expanded, so that the government would not only continue this training, but provide rifles and ammunition ... and places to practice.

section 113 of the 1916 National Defense Act as amended by the year 1921.

Encouragement Of Rifle Practice.—The Secretary bf War shall annually submit to Congress recommendations and estimates for the establishment and maintenance of indoor and outdoor rifle ranges, under such a comprehensive plan as will ultimately result in providing adequate facilities for rifle practice in all sections of the country. And that all ranges so established and all ranges which may have already been constructed, in whole or in part, with funds provided by Congress shall be open for use by those in any branch of the military or naval service of the United States and by all able-bodied males capable of bearing arms, under reasonable regulations to be prescribed by the controlling authorities and approved by the Secretary of War. That the President may detail capable officers and noncommissioned officers of the Regular Army and National Guard to duty at such ranges as instructors for the purpose of training the citizenry in the use of the military arm. Where rifle ranges shall have been so established and instructors assigned to duty thereat, the Secretary of War shall be authorized to provide for the issue of a reasonable number of standard military rifles and such quantities of ammunition as may be available for use in conducting such rifle practice.

Source, see page 42

Of course, to make this provision work, the government created a whole new department, called the Office of the Director of Civilian Marksmanship, commonly called the DCM. They took over for the NBPRP. Not only was the job of the DCM to promote rifle practice and to create rifle ranges, their job was to actively arm the civilian population by selling them, at or below cost, surplus military rifles. Same as the NBPRP, but they went at it with enthusiasm. For 76 years the DCM program ran, and distributed millions of guns to the people. Millions. The basic qualification was that you had shown an interest in shooting by entering an official event or two. After that, send in a little money and we’ll send you a gun.

In 1996 the DCM, which had been run by the Army for generations, was privatized. The new group was called the Corporation for the Promotion of Rifle Practice and Firearms Safety, Inc., ie the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), and is no longer directly funded by the government. They get their funding indirectly, by selling the citizenry those same surplus rifles, along with surplus ammunition.

image

Once upon a time you could pick up a brand new, never issued, never fired M1 rifle for about $20. Those days are long gone. About 30 years ago people started thinking that these rifles were collector’s items, even though more than 5.5 million of them had been made over the years, and the demand skyrocketed. So did the price. And the DCM/CMP inventory pretty much evaporated. These days, while you can go out an buy a brand new M1 for around $1200 with all new hand fit parts, even the “new” version chambered for the more modern 7.62 NATO cartridge, CMP still has a small supply, and will sell you one in various conditions for between $500 and $1500. The new rifles built by Springfield have no sense of history, while the ones sold by CMP were once owned by the military and may have seen famous service at some point. They will also sell you a fully rebuilt rifle, new barrel, new stocks, original receiver, made up of parts, guaranteed to be a decent shooter, for under $1000.

But I haven’t heard of a single government run public rifle range being opened in my lifetime. I don’t know that that ever even happened. Instead, citizens are allowed occasional access to most military ranges. So instead of a rare case of a government program petering out, we have an even rarer case of a government program being run intelligently and saving money, by a now privatized group that is self-funding. Maybe these guys should run the Post Office.

I’d like one of these rifles, though I am not sure that The People’s Utopia of New Jersey even allows me to own one. The M1A (civilian M14) is a better weapon in many ways, but I assume NJ won’t let me own one of those. Evil assault weapon you know.

more immigrants, more gypsies, more crime.

Yeah it’s some of them again. It’s them so often these days, most go unreported. Least that’s what we’re told.

Fury after CPS drops prosecution of immigrant boy gang accused of molesting girl, 14, ‘because it is not in public interest’

By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 3:32 PM on 13th April 2010

A gang of immigrant boys who molested a 14-year-old girl have escaped prosecution - because it is ‘not in the public interest.’

The terrified teenager was walking to a friend’s house when she was set upon by eight Slovakians, aged between eight and 12, who ‘mauled’ her in the middle of the street.

The boys groped her before she escaped and called the police, who identified the attackers and recommended criminal charges against five boys.

But officers are furious after the Crown Prosecution Service refused to press charges, saying it was ‘not in the public interest’.

The girl blasted the authorities for their decision, saying she had been ‘treated like a liar’.

‘I did nothing wrong but still feel like I’m being treated like a liar,’ she said.

The teenager was walking along in Hillfields, Coventry, West Midlands, at midday on January 6 when she was confronted by the gang, allegedly from Slovakian gypsy migrant families living nearby.

all the rest is here

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
