Under this rule, even Osama Bin Laden is British.  (A BMEWS MUST READ. REALLY!)

RICHARD LITTLEJOHN is a columnist with The Daily Mail here in England.

I think he’s perhaps one of the best, most logical and clear thinking conservative writers around.
I really admire and appreciate good word smiths.  Even if one happens to be on the left.  But I’m especially happy when the best are found in the conservative camp.

There is a very serious problem this country faces, and the left wing powers that be along with the european weenies of the eu are helping to make it worse.  But here.  I’ll let Mr. Littlejohn tell you about it.  Even an American not living here has to wonder about what this country is doing to itself.
Maybe the people here didn’t realize exactly what they were getting themselves into when they voted Labour in 1997.  But they should have.
But then, Blair was a damn good salesman and the thing he sold the very best was .... Blair.

It’s my personal belief that the Labour party is destroying this country.  Even scarier is I am not certain the Tories can save it even if they win the next election.
Stay Tuned.

Under this rule, even Osama Bin Laden is British

Last updated at 8:27 AM on 20th February 2009

Some years ago, in the wake of the Afghan hijack fiasco at Stansted, I invented a spoof game show called ‘Asylum!’

Anyone could play, provided they had no links to Britain. International terrorists were especially welcome.

All you had to do to win was find your way here and remember the magic word ‘asylum’. Prizes included a council house, lavish benefits and lashings of Legal Aid.

It was supposed to be a joke but, as always, was based on fact. I can remember writing that none of the hijackers would be deported and they’d all end up living here permanently, courtesy of the mug British taxpayer.

That’s exactly what happened. The Afghans took their place among a motley crew of foreign undesirables granted refuge in Britain. Top of the list was Abu Qatada, described as Osama Bin Laden’s European ambassador.

image

He’s been shacked up in West London since 1993, when he arrived from his native Jordan on a false passport. Since then he’s cost us £50,000 a year in benefit payments and more than £1.5million in lawyers’ fees.

After 9/11, the Government woke up to the enemy within. Tony Blair announced that ‘the game has changed’. No longer would we play host to Islamist headbangers, dedicated to our destruction.

Britain’s reputation as a soft touch was over. The preachers of hate were to be rounded up and kicked out, we were promised.

Blair knew perfectly well that was never going to happen, thanks to Labour’s embrace of the European ‘yuman rites’ act, which he once called his proudest achievement in politics.

And despite a raft of grandstanding ‘ anti-terror’ measures, Qatada is still here, along with a roll call of psychopaths from across the globe.

This week, after a drawn-out legal battle, the Law Lords ruled finally that Qatada could be returned to Jordan, where he has been convicted in absentia of terrorism offences.

But that won’t happen any time soon, either. The appeals process isn’t exhausted by any means, and will drag on for years, fuelled by a bottomless well of Legal Aid.

To add insult to injury, a panel of European judges has awarded Qatada £2,500 in damages for the brief period he spent in Belmarsh prison after 9/11.

Another ten foreign terror suspects held at the same time also received payouts ranging from £1,500 to £3,400 each.

image
‘YA’ KNOW, I SOMETIMES WONDER WHY I’M HIDING IN THIS SMELLY CAVE WHEN I COULD BE CLAIMING MY HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE UK.’

They include a variety of north Africans with links to Al Qaeda and other terror groups. Most, like Qatada, entered on false passports. They should have been deported instantly.

Even after they were jailed as a threat to national security, they were all free to leave the country voluntarily at any time. They chose to remain in prison and fight expulsion through the courts. Eventually, they were released under ‘control orders’.

And until Britain repeals the pernicious ‘yuman rites’ act, here they’ll stay, indefinitely.

The ‘rights’ of foreign terrorists will continue to trump the rights of law-abiding British citizens, who will be forced to carry on picking up the bill for their expensive lawyers and welfare benefits.

We’re not even allowed ‘for legal reasons’ to know the names of eight of the men we have been ordered to pay compensation. So who should we make out the cheque to, then? There is no end to this lunacy. Binyam Mohammed is an Ethiopian citizen who was granted leave to live in Britain. In 2001, he decided he’d rather live in Afghanistan.

Shortly after 9/11, he was arrested at Karachi airport carrying a false passport, trying to board a plane for London. He ended up at Guantanamo Bay and claims to have been tortured.

Britain is now moving heaven and earth to bring him ‘home’. Yet he hasn’t lived here for eight years and left of his own free will. By no stretch of the imagination is he a British ‘resident’, let alone a British citizen.

We’ve got enough problems with foreign terrorists, not to mention home-grown headbangers, without working ourselves into a lather over the fate of an Ethiopian who was resident in Afghanistan when he was arrested in Pakistan.

In the case of Binyam Mohammed, what we’re looking at is extraordinary rendition in reverse. Instead of flying terror suspects abroad to be tortured, we’re flying them here to be pampered.

Taken to its logical conclusion, the definition of British ‘resident’ should apply to Osama Bin Laden. After all, he lived in London for a few years before moving to Afghanistan. Maybe we should offer to bring him ‘home’, too.

And if Bin Laden was discovered living above a kebab shop in Finsbury Park, he’d be granted indefinite leave to stay, showered with benefits and given access to the best ‘yuman rites’ lawyers taxpayers’ money could buy.

If we can’t even deport Abu Qatada, because he wouldn’t face a fair trial, what chance would we stand with Bin Laden?

Welcome to London, twinned with the Hotel California. You can check in any time you like - but you can never leave.

LITTLEJOHN

Black medical student who claims she was bullied by racists sues for £300,000.

First of all, judging by what her hair looks like in the hard copy edition of our morning paper, can’t say as I blame anyone for not wanting to share a shower room with her.  But no matter, since bloody when does not wanting to shop with someone or share a meal with someone open an institution to charges of race?  Why does this (please note her origin) former Nigerian believe anyone has some sort of moral obligation to have lunch with or go shopping with her.  This is what the world has come to and the blame isn’t with the self styled victims.  No.  It’s the white, left liberal brigade that’s taught em they have rights beyond normal rights.

Can anyone seriously believe that a college like this one, which isn’t some unknown backwater college, can anyone believe they would act in a way that might open them to this sort of thing.  But hey ... there’s money in victimhood. Sure, the school went looking for problems and so out of the racist blue they intentionally failed her.  Uh Huh.

Hell, no point in my ranting on when Drew did it better under comments in another posting.

Here’s part of Drew’s comments and nobody has said it better.

Race gets thrown up against white people constantly because without it - the “we’re treated differently because you think we’re different because we go out of our way to act and BE different, unless it suits our immediate purpose” there is no reason to expect anyone to not assimilate and act like the majority. And that means white folk.

The shoe has been on the other foot for 3-4 decades now. The young Up and Comers on today’s corporate fast track were all born after 1980. A full third of our population has never known a time or a situation when being a minority was not a distinct advantage. Another third was not aware of the wider world until after the Civil Rights movement had made huge gains. The poorer people in that age demographic have been on government support their entire lives. Entire. Lives.

A black medical student who claims she was bullied by white racists on her course before examiners deliberately failed her is suing her college for more than £300,000.

By Caroline Gammell
Last Updated: 2:18PM GMT 19 Feb 2009

Virginia Jibowu claims she was ostracised by students in an “institutionally racist” environment at London’s King’s College medical school.

The 25-year-old alleges that fellow students refused to shop, eat or share a shower-room with her in their accommodation.

image

She claims one female student suggested introducing a killer disease into Africa to wipe out all the black people, while a male student allegedly asked her if black men were less intelligent than whites.

A third allegedly complained that the black nurses at King’s College Hospital were no fun.

Miss Jibowu is suing the college, which is part of the University of London, at Central London County Court for harassment, race discrimination and victimisation.

She alleges that while her fellow students have graduated and are now working in the NHS, the college has refused to investigate her complaints, intentionally failed her and tried to stop her re-sitting the course.

Miss Jibowu, who is of Nigerian origin and from Lambeth in south London, is demanding over £300,000 for loss of earnings, aggravated damages and injury to health and feelings.

If she fails to qualify from the course, she is expected to sue at the High Court for further compensation for the loss of her career, which could run into hundreds of thousands of pounds.

In legal papers submitted to the court, she alleged: “The college disregarded my complaints and graduated all students complained about.

“All of the alleged racists are now practising as doctors in the NHS. This can only ingrain the problem of institutional racism within the medical practice.

“They were not interviewed. At no point has the college accepted it was at fault for allowing an institutionally racist and victimising, hostile studying environment to exist.”

Miss Jibowu enrolled on the college’s six year extended medical degree course for students from disadvantaged backgrounds in September 2002.

She said students on that course had to wear a special badge, which led to them being bullied by counterparts on the regular five year degree programme.

In the legal papers, she claimed one student “asked me if black men were less intelligent than other people. He also asked if black people were more prone to becoming fat.

“He also said that he had stopped contacting a mutual friend because he had become ‘too black’.”

Miss Jibowu claimed three other white students were “hostile” to her during her hospital placement in Hastings, East Sussex in 2006.

One allegedly said that immigrants were “spoiling the UK” and said of the hospital in Hastings: “The nurses are great here - might have some fun. It’s not like in King’s cos they’re all Afro-Caribbean.”

Miss Jibowu had passed the first five years of study without failure and fully expected to complete her final year.

She had secured a job as a doctor at Gwent Hospital in Wales and was due to start work in August 2008.

But she claims the college deliberately failed her from final exams and then, without informing her, contacted hospital bosses in Gwent to say she would not be taking up her post.

She said the post should have been held open pending her appeal against the exam results.

“The college appears to be continuing actively to take steps to ensure that I fail my course or am removed from the course before its completion and am thereby denied the opportunity of becoming a doctor.”

King’s college and the former students accused of racism deny Miss Jibowu’s allegations.

The college is vigorously defending her court claim but a spokeswoman said: “We are unable to comment while legal proceedings are ongoing.”

The case is due to be heard later this year.

The Great Reloading Cost Rationalizer

My father in law joined a gun club not far from his house. He goes shooting at least once a week. At this point he’s got a whole big pile of empty cases, and he’s starting to notice the cost of buying box after box of ammo.

“Gosh, should I get into reloading? Cousin Joe has a little aluminum single stage press. How much does all this stuff cost?”

So I get to do the spreadsheet for him. Every guy who owns, or wants to buy, a press, especially a progressive press, has run these numbers to make the sale. Usually to himself or his wife! Let me save you the effort ...

image

image

These are real prices, from Midwayusa.com, Dillonprecision.com, starlinebrass.com, and tntreloading.com which is my local powder supplier. Yes, a progressive press is expensive. Especially a Dillon, and I put that one together with all the bells and whistles. But if you shoot a centerfire pistol on a regular basis you will be spending quite a lot of money on ammunition. And reloading 100 rounds of pistol ammo on a progressive press takes maybe 15 minutes. It has to take at least an hour or two on a single stage press.

The load data is from the Speer reloading manual #14 for .38 Special +P and will push the bullet to about 975 feet per second. This makes a decent hunting, home defense, target and plinking round. It also out performs the factory ammo by more than 100 feet per second.

Not Friendly, Not an Accident

“Friendly Fire” explosion

image

a grenade being carried by a police officer accidentally detonated as a plane waited on the tarmac

A GRENADE being carried by a police officer accidentally detonated as a plane was on the tarmac, tearing the plane in two.
COLOMBIA’S military and law enforcement agencies suffered two airplane mishaps today including a plane blown apart on the tarmac by a grenade in the luggage.

The National Police plane was left cut in half on the tarmac of the Olaya Herrera airport in Medellin, Colombia’s second largest city, and a notorious center of the international drugs trade.

According to a police spokesman, a grenade carried by an officer that was boarding the plane accidentally exploded.  It wounded eight officers of the 27 that were on board but there are no further details of their injuries.

Also today a Colombian air force intelligence aircraft with a crew of five or six crashed near the northwestern town of La Dorada.  The fate of the crew was not immediately known, a military source said.

“We have had an accident with an AC-47 plane with the plate number FAC 1670 which was on a training mission and crashed’’ just outside the town, the source said. As to the crew “we do not know what their fate is,’’ the source added.

update: all five crew members were killed, and the plane utterly destroyed.
The FAC Commander, General Jorge Ballesteros discarded the accident to have been caused by a “terrorist attack” and he affirmed that the plane was “flying over a region controlled by the authorities so there is not any possibility of an attack from groups outside the law.”

The plate number on the aircraft pictured is PNC-0211, which shows it belongs to the cops. My bright eyed aircraft savvy readers are staring at that picture ... thinking “gosh, that nose looks mighy familiar, but not the engine nacelles or the tail, but I’d know that spooky wing shape anywhere.”

And they would be right. Once upon a time, let’s guess about 1944, the airplane in the picture was a C-47. Upgraded and modified, some became the AC-47 “Spooky” gunship that served in Vietnam. When that conflict was over, and Uncle Sam decided that that gunship role could be better filled by modified C-130 aircraft, the Spookys were sold off. Columbia bought some. About half a dozen I think. They became ghosts ... known locally as Avion fantasma (ghost planes), and fitted with FLIR. They seem to have both intelligence gathering and ground suppression roles, and they kept right on flying.

Years go by ... in 1993 Colombia built some more. In 2005 Columbia paid $7.1 million to have Basler Turbo do a modernization and a refresh or two, and some of the planes emerged as upgrade AC-47s, and some as “new” model BT-67s. That’s the broken airplane in the picture. Bigger modern turboprop engines, lengthened fuselage, improved control surfaces and a wing edge redesign. Bigger, stronger, faster, longer. The Colombian Police have 2. Had 2, until today. Now they have 1. Wiki has a pic of a sister BT-67 aircraft.

So, two carefully kept aluminum WWII veterans brought down today. Both aircraft had been valiant fighters against leftist rebels and drug traffickers for ages. But both were accidents, and it’s mere coincidence that out of 8 aircraft like them in the entire country, 2 suffered fatal mishaps today.

I don’t think so Tim.

If I were the US Government, I’d be watching the skies over Columbia really carefully for the next few weeks.

Next Time Just Keep Your Mouth Shut

You Asked For It, Stupid

Pro-2A NY Senator Kathy Kirsten Gillibrand, Shrillary’s replacement, reaps the whirlwind after mentioning that she herself owns firearms. My hope is that this will only reaffirm just how rabid the anti-freedom crowd really is, even to a fellow Democrat.

Gillibrand removes guns from under bed

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) has moved the two rifles that she kept under the bed to protect her upstate New York home, her spokesman said Monday.

“Given that the location of the guns has been disclosed, they have been moved for security reasons,” Gillibrand’s spokesman Matt Canter said. She relocated the guns over the weekend while upstate to endorse Democrat Scott Murphy in the March 31 election to replace her in the 20th District, he said. He also said Gillibrand, mother of a 5-year-old and an infant, kept the ammunition separate from the empty guns, and then later called to add that the rifles were locked in a case while stored under the bed. She had refused to describe her gun safety measures.

Gun-control activists questioned the safety of placing guns under a bed where children can find them and burglars look first. The National Rifle Association said it is up to gun owners to safely store weapons.

Gillibrand disclosed she had guns under her bed in an interview with Newsday last Thursday. A Newsday story on the interview ran Monday, prompting reactions by advocates for gun rights and gun control.

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-Mineola), a gun-control activist ... added, ”I hope the guns didn’t have bullets in them.”

Gillibrand also has not replied to requests for a meeting by New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, said the group’s executive director, Jackie Hilly.

As a result, Hilly said, the group will hold a rally on New York’s City Hall steps Thursday to urge Gillibrand to work to pass three gun control bills. It will feature Lois Schaffer, a Great Neck woman whose daughter was shot and killed in her St. Louis home last December by teens with a stolen gun.

“I am very upset about the whole thing,” said Joyce Gorycki of Mineola, widow of a Long Island Rail Road official killed in the 1993 train shooting and co-chair of Long Island’s New Yorkers Against Gun Violence. “I don’t know why she needs two rifles.”

Way to go Kathy. Next time, take the Fred Thompson approach: it ain’t none of their damn business. They played Gotcha! on your naive upstate ass but good.

I hope the peel is fully off the banana here folks. Gun control is NOT about crime control. It’s about citizen control. Turning Rights into Needs, which then ought to be justified. Why does she NEED more than ONE rifle? Holy shit.

And now Gillibrand will be plagued by the professional hand-wringing extortionists. The untouchable victim squad who can never be doubted. The Cindy Sheehans of the movement, with their “unimpeachable moral high ground”. Bullshit; Ann Coulter was 100% correct. Communists, every single one of them. “You must support our bill, or we’ll come and ooze at you forever! Our husband’s deaths are your fault because it’s people like you who bought these things which were stolen and then used to kill!!!”

Where the hell is that reset button graphic?

When TV Reporters Go Wild

A new hero, or the latest guy to get the pink slip tomorrow morning?

Rick Santelli’s Chicago Tea Party

A short video in which a financial markets TV reporter goes a bit wild. Speak the truth, shame the devil, lose your job as well? We’ll find out tomorrow I guess.

Extremely interesting point he makes from the trading floor - a very large number of the people desiring their mortgages to be refinanced couldn’t/wouldn’t pay them back even if the interest rate was 2%. Even Minus 2% he says.

You can’t buy your way to prosperity ... [if you could then] the government should spend a trillion dollars an hour; they’d get a 1.5 trillion back. ... our founding fathers, people like Benjamin Franklin and [Thomas] Jefferson, what we’re doing in our country right now is making them roll over in their graves.

Outstanding.

This calls for more hair. More teeth too!

Just clicking around the net found me Maynard’s post on the Stimulus over at Tammy Bruce:

It’s a crime beyond imagination against the American people.

This monster is not of Obama’s creation. It’s a product of long-term rot and corruption; the consequence of fools and demagogues pandering to the lowest common denominator, promising ever-more goodies to an ever-needier mob.

For a brief moment, I hoped the shock of the current crisis would bring an element of reality to the debate in Washington. Certainly Obama would do the right thing. Not because he wanted to, you understand, but because he had no choice. I thought the nation had reached that late stage of addiction where the addict has hit bottom, and finally faces his issues head-on.

I stand corrected. We haven’t hit bottom yet, but Obama is working on that. His “stimulus” package may become our final binge. What Reagan did to the Soviet Union, Obama is now arranging for us.

This is only the beginning.

When the ‘Standard Deduction’ is no longer ‘Standard’

Today I finally broke down and did my tax returns, Federal and State. And I found that the ‘standard deduction’ isn’t… uh… standard anymore.

Thought I would bring this to your attention. Just in case I’m entirely crazy, maybe some BMEWS’d accountant would set me straight. Before I file a false return… grin

A little background: I’ve always done my own taxes since my parents cut me lose as a college freshman in ‘78. And indeed, I’ve screwed up before and paid dearly. Not that the tax owed was too onerous, but the penalties and interest after three years? (which is how long the IRS took to catch my oversight) Whew!

I used to be able to itemize deductions. This was back when the youngest child was still at home. He moved out on his own in ‘94. Since then, while I always check, the standard deduction has been better. (I’d like to thank Ronald Reagan. He indexed the tax tables to inflation. Though I’m now getting too close to the Alternative Minimum Tax, which I also check every year. The AMT has NEVER been indexed for inflation.)

For those that don’t know, you can take the ‘standard deduction’, which differs for single, married, qualified widow(er)s, etc. Or you can ‘itemize’ if that is more beneficial. When itemizing, you can deduct things like mortgage interest, property taxes, other state and local taxes, union dues, healthcare costs that exceed a certain floor, etc. The point is that the ‘itemized deductions’ should exceed the ‘standard deduction’. Otherwise, what’s the point? You have to keep records of expenditures… etc.

The standard deduction, I’ve always assumed, included all of the above. Just makes things easier.

There’s a new line on my 1040: Line 39c says,

Check if standard deduction includes real estate taxes or disaster loss (see page 34)

Huh? What is this? I’ve paid attention to these things since I took that H&R Block tax course back in ‘87. Of course I turned to page 34. There’s a worksheet to fill out…

The bottom line is this: The ‘standard deduction’ is no longer standard. You can now add a portion of your property taxes paid during the last year ($500 if single, $1000 if married filing jointly) to the so-called ‘standard deduction’. Remember what I stated above: The standard deduction assumes a certain amount of property taxes. This is supposed to make things simpler.

Now I have a worksheet to find out what my ‘standard deduction’ is.

I benefited this time around. Instead of the normal $400-$500 I usually owe in April, this year I owe a whopping $45 and some change.

I’m not really complaining about the result this year. But, I’m sure some Democrats will try to raise taxes on ‘the rich’ like me. They’ll say I ‘only paid’ $45.00 last year. And their idiot constituency will believe it!

Remember, What Congress giveth, B. Hussein Obama can taketh away… with interest!

Barack Obama’s attorney general Eric Holder has branded the United States a “nation of cowards”

Not supposed to be up after a TIRING day. Could not pass this one up.

May I assume you guys have seen this crap by now?  It’s being reported here in The Telegraph and so others will have picked it up by now.

More ammo over here for anti-USA ppl saying, “see? what did we tell ya?”

“he lamented the fact that the nation “still had not come to grips with its racial past, nor has it been willing to contemplate, in a truly meaningful way, the diverse future it is fated to have”.

I don’t get it.  What kind of BS is this?  But guess what people?  What I do get is that the USA will possibly become more like here. Like the UK and Europe.  Of course at the rate those folks breed .....

What? He wants me to have more negro friends?  Is that it?  He wants me to make friends with Al Sharpton and Jessee Jackson?  Those guys don’t wanna know me anyway. So then who has he in mind?

I just don’t have a whole lot in common with most of those folks.  I had a good Trumpet coach and almost friend years ago.  But outside our interest in Jazz, we had little else in common even though we got along very well.  Is this fellow suggesting whites need to reach out or something?

I’m frustrated with this.  Maybe I missed something.

??

Obama’s attorney general claims US is ‘voluntarily segregated’
Barack Obama’s attorney general Eric Holder has branded the United States a “nation of cowards” who are “voluntarily socially segregated” along race lines.

By Alex Spillius in Washington
Last Updated: 5:56PM GMT 19 Feb 2009

Mr Holder, the first African American to hold the post of top justice official, said that although the US was integrated in the workplace, its people spent their weekends and private lives in “race-protected cocoons”.

“Saturdays and Sundays, America in the year 2009 does not in some ways differ significantly from the country that existed almost 50 years ago. This is truly sad,” said Mr Holder

Speaking to members of his department to mark Black History Month, an annual national celebration of African American achievement, he added: “Though this nation has proudly thought of itself as an ethnic melting pot in things racial, we have always been, and we, I believe, continue to be, in too many ways, essentially a nation of cowards,” he added.

His comments took some of the sheen off the celebratory mood America has felt since electing its first black president in November.

But Mr Holder was echoing a plea President Barack Obama made to the nation during his campaign last year to break a “racial stalemate we’ve been stuck in for years”.

The president, the son of Kenyan and a white Kansan, has described himself as “post-racial”, but Mr Holder clearly thought the nation has a long way to go before it meets that goal.

Mr Holder, 57, who was born in New York to parents hailing from Barbados, cited the president’s words and urged his colleagues to loosen their inhibitions about discussing race.

“Though race-related issues continue to occupy a significant portion of our political discussion, and though there remain many unresolved racial issues in this nation, we, average Americans, simply do not talk enough with each other about things racial,” he said.

Speaking afterwards to reporters, he added: “If we’re going to ever make progress, we’re going to have to have the guts, we have to have the determination, to be honest with each other. It also means we have to be able to accept criticism where that is justified.”

Acknowledging that Mr Obama’s election made the US “fundamentally different”, he lamented the fact that the nation “still had not come to grips with its racial past, nor has it been willing to contemplate, in a truly meaningful way, the diverse future it is fated to have”.

Andrew Grant-Thomas, Deputy Director of the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at Ohio State University, praised Mr Holder’s general message but said the wording of the speech may alienate some.

“He’s right on the substance, but that’s probably not the most politic way of saying it. I’m certain there are people who will hear him and say, ‘That’s obnoxious’,” he said, adding that what was missing from Mr Holder’s speech were specific examples of what painful subjects need to be addressed.

Hilary Shelton, vice president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, called the speech “constructively provocative”.

“Nobody wants to be considered a coward. We’ve learned to get along by exclusion and silence. We need to talk about it. People need to feel comfortable saying the wrong things,” he said.

Arise, Sir Terrence

Terry Pratchett Knighted

image image image

LONDON – Fantasy author Terry Pratchett has been knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for services to literature. The 60-year-old British writer received the knighthood at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday.

Pratchett was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his highly successful Discworld series of comic fantasy novels about a flat universe balanced on the back of four elephants which themselves stand on a giant turtle.

“Most writers don’t make much money, they only happen to make some if they’re standing in the station when the gravy train comes in,” the 60-year-old, who has Alzheimer’s, said of his books, which have sold 55 million copies and been translated into 33 languages.

“I thought I was lucky to make some money, then lucky to make a living, then lucky to be a millionaire.”

Good for him. Pratchett is such a delight to read. I’m working my way through my second read of his latest, perhaps last, novel Nation. It’s a good story with the best kind of ending; if this turns out to be his last book then he will go out on a very high note.

Big Mystery to Science and the DNC

image

Cool picture!

Then you find out it’s the Miniature Ice Snot Snail. Eeeewwww. Arcticerus Pelosiolis Slimestra, because I think Limacina was a girl from Brazil I once knew.

Spinning a “mucus net” off its paddle-like foot-wings to trap algae and other foods, the swimming snail species Limacina helicinia is no bigger than a bean. But the discovery that it and at least 234 other species inhabit both Arctic and Antarctic waters is big news to biologists.

Finding so many species inhabiting both Poles “startled” scientists, according to a statement today from the Census of Marine Life, an international project to assess all marine life--past, present, and future--by 2010. Among the other dual-Pole species: whales, worms, and crustaceans. [sounds like Democrats to me. Who wants to make the “dual pole” joke?]

Exactly where these species came from and how they ended up a world apart--with comparatively warm oceans in between--remains a mystery, the scientists said.

Silly scientists. More easily fooled and startled than most Democrats. The answer is obvious if you can recall the old flea joke with the punch line ...

“And so the next thing I know, I’m on this guy’s mustache again!”

Yeah, yeah, I know ... Odd Science, Democrats ... there should be “teeth” to go with this post I think.

It’s RACIST!!!

Playing off of the multi-way combo of the Travis the Chimp story from the other day, in which a 200lb pet chimpanzee, after being given Xanax, went crazy and mauled a woman, and had to be shot, along with the “a million monkeys at a million typewriters could eventually write Shakespeare” theme, and the fact that the stimulus package has a whole barrel full of monkeyshines and surprises in it that nobody has even read yet, (and maybe even New Yorkers and their awareness of the NYPD’s shootist proclivity, and maybe even the King Kong meme, or the parallel between a drug habit and a national debt that will never go away, both of which could be called a Monkey On Your Back. Hey, maybe he was thinking that the Dems were monkeying around with our freedoms by pushing this socialist handout package?) NY Post cartoonist Sean Delonas came out with this one today:

image

Pretty inventive on his part. It would have been even more inventive if the bill had failed; if it had been “shot down”. Then it would have been more perfecter. Alas.

But it’s a monkey see? A chimpanzee. Ignoring completely that for the past 8 solid years not a single hour of a single day went by when the left wasn’t calling Bush a chimp, the reaction was pitiful. And totally predictable. Guess who had to say guess what? You knew it.

Civil rights activist Al Sharpton called the cartoon “racially offensive” and released this statement. This story was also one of the leads on all 6 of the main NYC evening news TV programs.

“The cartoon in today’s New York Post is troubling at best given the historic racist attacks of African-Americans as being synonymous with monkeys. One has to question whether the cartoonist is making a less than casual reference to this when in the cartoon they have police saying after shooting a chimpanzee that ‘Now they will have to find someone else to write the stimulus bill.’”

The New York Post is standing behind the cartoon. Editor-in-Chief Col Allan said: “The cartoon is a clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut. It broadly mocks Washington’s efforts to revive the economy. Again, Al Sharpton reveals himself as nothing more than a publicity opportunist.”

Sharpton’s National Action Network has already planned a protest outside the Post’s mid-town Manhattan headquarters at noon on Thursday. The White House says it will not respond to the story.

But Al - Balack Obama didn’t even write the bill. He gave that one over to Reid and Pelosi. Stupid. Poor old Sharpton. He’s pretty much out of work these days isn’t he? Wonder if Obama is gonna give him some special stimulation?

Henhouse, meet Fox

Tons of UXBs missing in Gaza

“Explosives haul missing in Gaza ”

A large stockpile of unexploded weapons has disappeared in Gaza, before United Nations experts were able to dispose of it safely, the BBC has learned. The explosives, including aircraft bombs and white phosphorus shells, were fired by the Israeli military during its recent offensive in the Gaza Strip.

UN officials said they were urgently trying to establish where the arms had gone and have called for their return.

Israel has accused Hamas of taking the stockpile, which was under Hamas guard.

Well, no shir Shitlock. I’m sure the UN inspectors are Amazed, Simply Amazed.

Cubic stupid. The Izzys should have sent in a detonation squad at once. Or a small airstrike.

Two weeks ago, on 2 February, the UN team was given access to a storage site in Gaza City where more than 7,000kg of explosives was being housed. It included three 2,000-pound bombs and eight 500-pound bombs, which had all been dropped from aircraft but failed to explode. There was also a large number of 155mm shells for delivering the incendiary chemical white phosphorus.

Many of the explosives had been collected by the Hamas authorities in the Gaza Strip.

Oh, don’t worry. I’m sure they’ll turn up eventually ... one rocket or one IED at a time.

Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe is fit to be freed from Broadmoor, according to doctors.

Oh bloody great.
The shrinks believe he’s safe now so his life in prison didn’t mean life cause now the bastard is cured.

This wasn’t supposed to be my next post but I could not ignore this article.

For you folks in the USA who may not know who this very creepy man is, he’s a serial killer.

He murdered 13 and tried to kill 7 more in a five year period.
But the shrinks think he (and the public?) will be okay.  So does his “legal team” headed by a someone with a name of, Saimo Chahal. ?? Huh? how do you pronounce that?
“human rights lawyer Saimo Chahal. His legal team have fought hard recently to have him declared sane and given a release date”.
I hope he turns on one of those shits and takes out some of the family.  We’ll see how committed the bastards continue to be toward defending wack jobs like this guy.

If there is no death penalty then life should mean exactly that.  I don’t care if he wasn’t of “sound mind.” He still knew damn well what he was doing.
Jeesh!  Too bad people no longer raise lynching parties.

Oh yeah and I just love this line from the article.  “He is effectively cured as long as he never stops taking his medication,”

So just what are the chances he will stay on his meds?  Come on be serious.  Only recently, as in the last month, there was a story of another guy, poor man, who slipped up on taking his meds and WHOOPS. Oh so sorry. Stab-Stab!  Another victim dead.

How many times have we heard over the years about some creep who just happened to miss taking medication and .. WHOOPS AGAIN. Another body for the police to photograph. Another family to morn the passing of a loved onbe.

Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe ‘fit to be freed from Broadmoor’
Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe is fit to be freed from Broadmoor, according to doctors at the high security hospital.

Last Updated: 10:16AM GMT 18 Feb 2009

The decision is a major step towards 62-year-old Sutcliffe’s aim of being freed altogether.

He was jailed for life in 1981 after murdering 13 women and trying to kill seven others over a five-year period in the 1970s.

If the Ministry of Justice agrees with the doctors’ verdict, he will be sent to a medium-secure unit where he could be allowed out on short release for rehabilitation. A source close to Mr Sutcliffe told The Sun he is regarded as a “model patient” at Broadmoor, and medics are more concerned about the risk the public poses to him rather than the risk he poses to the public.

“He is effectively cured as long as he never stops taking his medication,” the source said.
Sutcliffe believed he was on a “mission from God” to kill prostitutes - although not all of his victims were - and was dubbed the Yorkshire Ripper because he mutilated their bodies using a hammer, a sharpened screw driver and a knife.

He has spent nearly all of his 27 years in captivity at Broadmoor after being diagnosed as mentally ill, but refused treatment until 1993 when the Mental Health Commission ruled that it should be given forcibly.
It emerged in 2006 that he is not among the 35 “worst” offenders who have been told that they must spend their entire life behind bars.
Sutcliffe is now represented by human rights lawyer Saimo Chahal. His legal team have fought hard recently to have him declared sane and given a release date.

A source close to the convict said: “Peter was told last month by his lawyers that after detailed discussions with the Broadmoor team he’d been classified as low risk.
“The psychiatrists advised that if the powers-that-be allowed him to be re-categorised and sent to a medium secure unit, he was at low risk of trying to escape or breaking the rules.
“When you are in medium secure units you are basically being prepared for a new life outside, you need to be rehabilitated slowly and taught simply how to live again.
“Peter has not handled money since he was locked up nearly 28 years ago. He has only ever bought things out of catalogues and has not had to cook or clean or do his own laundry.
“He would be taken on supervised shopping trips at first and then allowed out on his own and given simple tasks - like buying a train ticket, catching a bus or going to a supermarket.”
The source said the main concern was that Sutcliffe might be recognized.

“A risk assessment was done as to whether Peter was likely to abscond if allowed out on the streets alone. But Peter told me he was marked as low risk on every aspect of his behaviour,” the source said.
“He has been a model patient. He has never caused any aggravation and is liked by the staff.
“Peter said the only fly in the ointment was that it was agreed he was at very high risk of being attacked and hurt if people outside recognised he was the Yorkshire Ripper.
“However that was countered by the fact that he is now unrecognisable as the Peter that was locked up. He is bloated up to 19st, his complexion is bad and he shuffles about. Peter’s trademark jet black well-groomed beard is now grey and straggly.”

I hope someone gets him anyway. btw .. for yanks wanting to know what 19st is. Brits measure for weight although I was under the impression that they were using another measure these days.  Anyway, 19st would be 19 stone and there are 14 pounds to the stone.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
