Prickley Pig Problems

Yes, we’re making some more changes here at BMEWS. Starting yesterday, the team of highly trained professionals here (?) began work on upgrading the e-mail notification system. The pig started whining almost immediately. There may be pork chops for dinner tonight.

What we’re doing is quite simple: changing the format of e-mail notifications from plain, dull text to HTML formatted e-mails that allow you to see in the e-mail exactly what the comment looks like here, smileys and all. The pig protesteth that there are bugs in the cake mix. The pig is right. We’re trying to get this completed as quickly as possible but in the meantime you may see some strangeness. Besides the pig, that is.

Leave a message in the forum thread about any problems you are encountering - or just leave a comment here. Also, give us feedback on the new format, whether you like it or not, that is. We’ll try to get everything resolved and working fine as quickly as we can. Except for the pig. There’s no hope for him, I’m afraid.

P.S. Our 1,000,000th visitor will arrive within the next thirty minutes.
Here is what that lucky person will receive.

OK. We quietly passed one million at 9:34am. Marty wins the pool.
Now let’s just forget the Sitemeter for a few years.

Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner?

Yes, friends. It is that time again. Every two years we get to vote for members of Congress and the battle for control of the House is on. In Texas, Tom DeLay survived the first bout against three Republican challengers in the primary.

I have conservative friends in Texas who say DeLay is a crook and they’d like to get rid of him and others who say they will vote for him again and again because of the way he has tweaked the noses of the Democrats in the Lone Star State. They either hate him or love him.

Obviously, the latter group won out in this primary. It’ll be interesting to see what happens between now and November as DeLay is still under indictment and the Donks are smelling blood. Stay tuned. This one promises to be a fun one to watch.

March 8, 2006

HOUSTON (AP)

In his first election since he was indicted and forced to step aside as majority leader, Rep. Tom DeLay held off three challengers to keep the Republican nomination to the U.S. House. Now he faces what many consider the real contest — a general election fight against an organized, well-funded Democrat with a score to settle.

Nick Lampson, who was unopposed in Tuesday’s primary, represented a district adjacent to DeLay’s for four terms until it was redrawn in a redistricting plan engineered by DeLay. Lampson lost in 2004 to Republican Ted Poe.

DeLay, 58, held on to his ballot position by avoiding public discussions of his considerable political problems — a felony money-laundering indictment, close ties to lobbyist Jack Abramoff and the loss of his leadership position.

Instead, DeLay campaigned at carefully orchestrated events, avoided direct interviews with reporters and largely focused on his hometown of Sugar Land. It paid off with a 2-to-1 victory margin over lawyer Tom Campbell, who had ties to the first President Bush’s administration, and two other candidates.

“That was an effective strategy to get through the primary,” said political scientist Cal Jillson of Southern Methodist University in Dallas. “But in the general election, he’ll have to face Lampson and Steve Stockman, as well as the press, both local and national.”

According to final but unofficial returns, DeLay scored 20,558 votes, or 62 percent, to Campbell’s 9,937, or 30 percent. Stockman, a former Republican congressman, is considering running as an independent.

“Democrat attacks and the politics of personal destruction were heavily used by my opponents in this Republican primary, and they were rejected just like they will be in November,” DeLay said in a statement.

Democrats Discover Databases

As a professional database administrator (DBA), I am highly offended that Democrats are appropriating my technology for their own personal gain. In truth, I find it hilarious that the Donks have just discovered the advantages of data mining. I’ve been designing and building data warehousees for businesses for .. oh .. about fifteen years now. I haven’t done any work for political parties yet so you can’t blame me for that.

Data warehousing and data mining are invaluable tools for businesses to target advertising and consumer markets. Unfortunately for the Democrats, I think their plan is doomed to failure. Why? Because up until now they’ve gotten most of their funding from large donors like Soros and the Hollywood crowd whereas Republicans have actually received more in donations from the population at large, mainly in $5, $10 and $100 donations. That’s a fact. Check the latest campaign finance reports, particularly from the 2004 election.

The Donks will fail in this venture because their base is narrowly grouped on the coasts, mostly in poorer neighborhoods. These people aren’t going to donate. They can’t afford even $5 in most cases. Sure, they can take a free ride to the polls in a party-provided van and vote the Democratic ticket every few years but actually fork out money? No way. The Democrats are about to find out that pandering to the poor will get them votes but very little cash. Watch and see ...

Democrats’ Data Mining Stirs an Intraparty Battle
March 8, 2006

(WASHINGTON POST)

A group of well-connected Democrats led by a former top aide to Bill Clinton is raising millions of dollars to start a private firm that plans to compile huge amounts of data on Americans to identify Democratic voters and blunt what has been a clear Republican lead in using technology for political advantage.

The effort by Harold Ickes, a deputy chief of staff in the Clinton White House and an adviser to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), is prompting intense behind-the-scenes debate in Democratic circles. Officials at the Democratic National Committee think that creating a modern database is their job, and they say that a competing for-profit entity could divert energy and money that should instead be invested with the national party.

Ickes and others involved in the effort acknowledge that their activities are in part a vote of no confidence that the DNC under Chairman Howard Dean is ready to compete with Republicans on the technological front. “The Republicans have developed a cadre of people who appreciate databases and know how to use them, and we are way behind the march,” said Ickes, whose political technology venture is being backed by financier George Soros.

“It’s unclear what the DNC is doing. Is it going to be kept up to date?” Ickes asked, adding that out-of-date voter information is “worse than having no database at all.”

Ickes’s effort is drawing particular notice among Washington operatives who know about it because of speculation that he is acting to build a campaign resource for a possible 2008 presidential run by Hillary Clinton.

She has long been concerned, advisers say, that Democrats and liberals lack the political infrastructure of Republicans and their conservative allies. Ickes said his new venture, Data Warehouse, will at first seek to sell its targeting information to politically active unions and liberal interest groups, rather than campaigns.

Head Count

It’s bad enough we’re giving these animals money but we’re depending on them to give us an accurate head count so we know how much to give? You have got to be kidding me, right? These are the swine who danced in the streets and celebrated on 9/11 and whose favorite hobby is blowing up Israeli buses and cafes ... and we’re supposed to throw handfuls of money at them based on their figures?

HELLO, WASHINGTON! Get a clue, Congress! As a taxpayer, I don’t like the idea of supporting ANY Paleswinians with my money, much less ones that don’t exist! I demand a refund. Please have the IRS contact me immediately regarding where to send my check. Thank you ....

Congress today will be presented with a new study that documents the Palestinians have inflated their population numbers by over 50 percent and that almost $3 billion in United States taxpayer funds may have been provided as aid to the Palestinians in part based on fraudulent data.

“American tax dollars and other international humanitarian aid have been based on inflated population numbers which have been accepted without question by governments and aid agencies. Our researchers pointed out that money has been spent to help Palestinians who were double-counted, never born or not present in the West Bank and Gaza,” Bennet Zimmerman, head of the new study, titled “Arab Population in the West Bank and Gaza,” told WND.

If You Can’t Beat Us, Buy Us

Let’s examine this cycle of money flow described below. We buy gas in America from the Arabs at nearly $70 per barrel. Our money goes to them. They spend a third of the money stirring up trouble for us, a third on luxurious palaces for the rulers while their population starves and the final third is used on a huge shopping spree as they come over here and buy us up.

Somehow, I don’t think this is the kind of economy that Adam Smith dreamed of. I’m quite sure Alexander Hamilton would not find it amusing either. So what are we going to do? Nothing. What can we do? Nothing. Auto manufacturers keep selling us cars that get 10 miles per gallon, we’ve already destroyed the countries once-massive rail system, the enviro-whackos and caribou-huggers won’t let us drill in Alaska or off Florida’s coast, hydrogen is too expensive - there’s not a thing we can do, is there?

Wait! I have an idea! Let’s sell the Arabs California, Washington (state), Massachusetts and New York - in exchange for 200 years of free oil. This is ingenious. The rational people in the US get all the gas we want and the idjit Liberals in the blue states get to be ruled by homophobic, female-oppressing, drug-and-alcohol-hating ... madmen with swords. Dang! I love it when a plan comes together ....

imageimageMideast Investment Up in U.S.
Tuesday, March 7, 2006

(WASHINGTON POST)

Middle Eastern investment in the United States is once again picking up steam, showing big gains since the tense period following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. And while some takeovers are triggering alarm—most famously, the purchase by a Dubai-owned company of a seaports management firm—others are evoking warm welcomes.

Spearheading the trend is Dubai’s Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktum (popularly known as “Sheik Mo"), ruler of the freewheeling city-state, which is part of the United Arab Emirates. The ports deal is just one of a series of recent purchases by companies he controls.

Other acquisitions include a $1 billion portfolio of 21,000 apartments in U.S. Sun Belt cities; a 2.2 percent stake in the automotive giant DaimlerChrysler AG that cost another $1 billion; and a Manhattan landmark building, 230 Park Ave. The emirate also made major purchases in other countries over the past year, notably a $1.5 billion takeover of Britain’s Tussauds Group, which owns the famous waxworks, along with theme parks, roller coasters and other entertainment-oriented businesses.

Already, the list of U.S. businesses owned by Arab investors—not just from Dubai—includes some well-known names. Among them are Caribou Coffee Co., the fast-growing rival to Starbucks Corp.; Church’s Chicken, a fast-food concern; Loehmann’s, a specialty retailer; TLC Health Care Services Inc., a provider of home nursing and hospice care; and even several financial publications, including the American Banker.

The WTF? Award Winner

You come here and read about all kinds of weird s**t, mostly from Liberals, Democrats, Arabs and the Fwench. Occasionally we are proud to present to you our winner of the coveted WTF? Trophy™.

This award is given out only once in a blue moon to the news item or story that is so ridiculous that you want to just lean back very carefully in your chair, take a deep breath, swallow a large belt of vodka, take a toke off of some illegal herb and mumble to yourself ... What The F**k?

So without further ado, we proudly present to you this outstanding WTF? Moment (from the United Arab Emirates, no less) ....

imageimageArabic Braille ICDL Courseware

ITEP, HH Sheikh Mohammed IT Education Project, joins forces with Tamkeen, the training centre for visually impaired, to announce the availability of the world’s first Arabic International Computer Driving License (ICDL) courseware. This is part of ITEP’s efforts as an organisation devoted to enhancing IT literacy in the UAE.

‘Tamkeen is building the resources to help visually-impaired people contribute actively to our country’s social and economic development,’ said Awatif Akbari, Head of Training, Tamkeen. ‘Through initiatives like the ICDL courseware in Braille, we are keen to equip visually-impaired people with the skills necessary to take advantage of the information economy.’

The ICDL courseware will enable the visually impaired to study for obtaining the International Computer Driving License (ICDL), a globally recognized credential that certifies an individual as competent in using computers. Accepted as the standard for computer literacy in over 140 countries, the ICDL is designed for a person to ‘drive’ a computer with the same ease as they might drive a car. There are more than 13 million ICDL-certified people in the world today.

Consider this: the blind Arabs learn how to “drive” computers and eventually take over our tech support from the Indians. Are you screaming yet?

NJ Sinks Even Lower

Found this on Drudge this morning.  Apparenty, Assemblyman PETER J. BIONDI (from my former home district) has introduced a bill to stop people from getting their feelings hurt.  This bill is summerized thus:

Makes certain operators of interactive computer services and Internet service providers liable to persons injured by false or defamatory messages posted on public forum websites.

So the ISP would be liable if someone was injured by false or defamatory statements made on a public website.  What a crock.  How deeply do these people want to get in our lives?

Here’s the key paragraph:

This bill would require an operator of any interactive computer service or an Internet service provider to establish, maintain and enforce a policy requiring an information content provider who posts messages on a public forum website either to be identified by legal name and address or to register a legal name and address with the operator or provider prior to posting messages on a public forum website.

The bill requires an operator of an interactive computer service or an Internet service provider to establish and maintain reasonable procedures to enable any person to request and obtain disclosure of the legal name and address of an information content provider who posts false or defamatory information about the person on a public forum website.

In addition, the bill makes any operator or Internet service provider liable for compensatory and punitive damages as well as costs of a law suit filed by a person damaged by the posting of such messages if the operator or Internet service provider fails to establish, maintain and enforce the policy required by section 2 of the bill. [Emphasis mine -FC]

So now, ISP (and blog operators, presumably) would have to maintain a database of users, complete with real name and address so that the state of NJ can easily find them if someone gets harmed.  Good grief.  I’m out of words.

Media Values

Elmer Fudd: “Be vewwy qwiet! Katie is hunting weligious wingnuts!”

It’s too bad she didn’t find any ... not that she didn’t try real hard. I liked the part about this poor town which will be deprived of “porn shops, strip joints and premarital sex”. Great Googley Moogley! Somebody alert Larry Flynt immediately. We need to save these poor people from themselves!

Katie Couric Miffed Over Traditional Values Town
(NEWSMAX)

NBC “Today Show” hostess Katie Couric didn’t sound too pleased Friday morning with plans to develop a community that openly espouses traditional values, let alone the fact that it will have a Catholic University at its center.

Plans for Ave Maria, Florida have already drawn praise from Gov. Jeb Bush, who told NBC: “I think it’ll be a model for sustainable living not just for Florida, but for the country.”

But plaudits from the Florida Republican, who NBC pointedly reminded, is Catholic himself, didn’t impress the folks at “Today.” Introducing the segment, reporter Michelle Kosinski lamented that Ave Maria would be a town “without condoms or birth control pills, no porn shops or strip joints, or premarital sex.”

Kings And Queens

C’mon, people! Get real. This little gal is a cute young lady and according to the school’s web site she is a gifted athlete. Why throw all this gender confusion into a silly college event? Let me explain it for the students at Hood: boys are kings and girls are queens - girls have breasts and boys have ... uh ... boys don’t have breasts. See? That was easy, wasn’t it ... ?

imageimageLesbian Homecoming King?
March 7, 2006, 7:19 AM EST

FREDERICK, Md. (AP)

Hood College is reviewing its homecoming rules after a lesbian was crowned king, a college official said. Jennifer Jones, the 21-year-old senior who beat out three men for the honor, said the crowning was a positive step for the private liberal arts college.

“It is cool that Hood allows people to be themselves,” Jones told The Frederick News-Post. “If people didn’t want me to be king, they wouldn’t have nominated me and voted for me.”

Jones, of Newark, Del., received 64 of 169 votes cast for king last month. More than two weeks after Jones was crowned, criticism and praise were still rippling through the 2,100-student campus in western Maryland. “She is not a man,” said Singleton Newman, a 22-year-old senior who was nominated for queen. “It is a gender issue, and she is a woman.”

Santo Provenzano, 21, who competed for king, said Jones’ selection made the event seem like a joke. “It discourages guys from wanting to take part in the future,” he said. Donald Miller, Hood’s student activities director, said all homecoming events will be reviewed and possibly changed. “We will look at what students want Hood’s homecoming to be,” he said.

It was only the second annual homecoming for the school. Men started attending Hood in 1971 but the school didn’t become fully coeducational until 2003 when men were permitted to live on campus for the first time. Jones tried to run for homecoming prince last year, but a student committee wouldn’t let her on the ballot even though she had gathered the required number of signatures on nominating petitions. Miller said a rule change this year abolished the petitions and required that candidates be nominated by student ballots.

Most Ridiculous Item Of The Day (so far)

A Pittsburgh Steelers ski mask? On a 75-ear-old woman? Robbing a bank? With an empty gun? A high-speed pursuit at 40 mph? Is there any possible way this story could get any weirder? Don’t answer that ....

imageimagePolice: Armed Woman, 75, Dons Steelers Ski Mask, Holds Up Bank

PITTSBURGH (WTAE-TV)

Police have captured an elderly woman who they say tried to rob a bank with a gun in West Mifflin on Monday morning. Officers said the attempted holdup happened at a National City Bank inside a Shop ‘n Save grocery store in the Century Square shopping plaza at about 10:30 a.m.

Police said that Marilyn Devine, 75, from Baldwin, wore a Steelers ski mask during the holdup and escaped in a tan Ford Escort with less than $5,000. After a five-mile pursuit at speeds of 40 to 45 mph, police pulled Devine over.

“I’m shocked. It’s unreal. You seen the lady here—she’s probably anybody’s grandmother. It’s unreal,” said West Mifflin Police Chief Joe Popovich. Devine confessed to stealing her husband’s handgun, donning the Steelers mask and pointing the gun at tellers, police said.

“She went to the first teller—male teller—and demanded all the money he had. He gave her the money. She brandished a black handgun,” Popovich said. The gun was not loaded, police said.

Brain Food

While we’re busily wasting time this morning, here’s something else to play with. Hidden in this picture is a man’s head. Look at the picture and see how long it takes you to find him. If you did it in lesss than three seconds then your right brain is overly developed. If it took you a minute or less then your right brain is normal. If it took between one minute and three minutes then your right brain is starving and you need to eat more protein. If you have not found the man after three minutes then you probably live in Colorado, have a lot of cats in your house and your brain is cracked down the middle ....
