On This Day In History

August 25, 1814 - British Burn Washington To The Ground

During the War of 1812, British forces under General Robert Ross overwhelm American militiamen at the Battle of Bladensburg, Maryland, and march unopposed into Washington, D.C. Most congressmen and officials fled the nation’s capital as soon as word came of the American defeat, but President James Madison and his wife, Dolley, escaped just before the invaders arrived. Earlier in the day, President Madison had been present at the Battle of Bladensburg and had at one point actually taken command of one of the few remaining American batteries, thus becoming the first and only president to exercise in actual battle his authority as commander in chief.

The British army entered Washington in the late afternoon, and General Ross and British officers dined that night at the deserted White House. Meanwhile, the British troops, ecstatic that they had captured their enemy’s capital, began setting the city aflame in revenge for the burning of Canadian government buildings by U.S. troops earlier in the war. The White House, a number of federal buildings, and several private homes were destroyed. The still uncompleted Capitol building was also set on fire, and the House of Representatives and the Library of Congress were gutted before a torrential downpour doused the flames.

On August 26, General Ross, realizing his untenable hold on the capital area, ordered a withdrawal from Washington. The next day, President Madison returned to a smoking and charred Washington and vowed to rebuild the city. James Hoban, the original architect of the White House, completed reconstruction of the executive mansion in 1817.

Meanwhile back in London, Cindy Sheehan’s great-great-grandmother was camped out outside King George’s palace, demanding to speak to His Highness about her son who had died in “the quagmire in America”. She was later drawn and quartered for her trouble and her children emigrated to America. The rest is .... history.

Tinfoil Lawsuit Of The Day

OK, gang! Pay attention. This is gonna be a little hard to explain so bear with me. Here we go: Greenpeace, Friends Of The Earth and four US cities are suing the federal government for providing loans to overseas developers who are building power plants in other countries - they say the power plants are a major cause of global warming, which affects us here in the US - and they got a judge in San Francisco (where else?) to give them the go-ahead to file suit.

Got all that?

Me neither.

All I know is someone had to stay up real late, doing some serious drugs to come up with this lawsuit ....

SAN FRANCISCO—A federal judge here said environmental groups and four U.S. cities can sue federal development agencies on allegations the overseas projects they financially back contribute to global warming. The decision Tuesday by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White is the first to say that groups alleging global warming have a right to sue.

“This is the first decision in the country to say that climate change causes sufficient injury to give a plaintiff standing, to open the courthouse door,” said Ronald Shems, a Vermont attorney representing Friends of the Earth. That group, in addition to Greenpeace and the cities of Boulder, Colo., Santa Monica, Oakland and Arcata, Calif., sued Overseas Private Investment Corp. and the Export-Import Bank of the United States. Those government agencies provide loans and insure billions of dollars of U.S. investors’ money for development projects overseas. Many of the projects are power plants that emit greenhouses gases that the groups allege cause global warming.

The coalition argues that the National Environmental Policy Act, the law requiring environmental assessments of proposed development projects in the United States, should apply to the U.S.-backed projects overseas. The U.S. law should apply, they say, because those developments are contributing to the degradation of the U.S. environment via global warming. The two government agencies claimed that U.S. environmental regulations do not apply to overseas projects, and that the courts have no right to intervene in those agencies’ affairs. Still, the judge’s ruling was narrow. White did not rule whether those agencies must perform environmental assessments of projects they help fund, but simply said the groups have a right to sue. If White’s decision stands, the issue of whether U.S. environmental rules apply to the projects backed by the agencies likely will be litigated, Shems said.

The suit claims 8 percent of the world’s greenhouse gases come from projects supported by the two agencies.

.... and the other 92% comes from asshat retards like Friends Of The Earth and Greenpeace spreading bullshit all over the planet.

The Greatest Movie Line Ever!

And that’s no joke. It came from an old Bob Hope movie (back when Hollywood actors still had functioning brains). This film clip is absolutely precious and needs to be stored in your archive of film clips. It’s a QuickTime MOV file (so all you Mac users can view it as well as Windows users) and it’s only 1.4 MB so even at dial-up speeds it shouldn’t take long to grab. Right-click on the picture below and select “Save Target As” if you’re using Internet Exploder or right-click and select “Save Link As” if you’re using FireFox. Trust me! You won’t regret it! Pass it around to all your friends. And let’s all give a big BMEWS thank you to TJ for sending this to me.

The Setup: The gentlemen on the right is a scientist and he is describing ”zombies” and how they act. When he finishes his description, Bob makes the inevitable comparison ....

image

FYI: This clip was sent to me in Windows Media format (WMV) but since we have such a diverse audience here I ran it through a digital media tool I use called Cleaner XL to convert it to a more common format. This software allows me to convert video between Windows Media, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, Quicktime, RealPlayer formats and even creates streaming media formats for web presentation. It’s expensive but if you’re doing any work with digital video, especially for the web, I highly recommend it.

Captain’s Mast

Just a quick memo to all you bilge rats out there. I wanted to give you all a tip about a few things, namely our blog friends and advertisers. Jay over at StopTheACLU.com is bringing all of us good news every day about that insidious, socialist organization that is threatening to destroy our country using our own legal system. Today’s post involves another success story by the Alliance Defense Fund to beat the ACLU back. For some unknown reason, the ACLU has a grudge against teaching youngsters about abstinence. They filed a lawsuit against the group which has been sponsoring teaching abstinence to teenagers, claiming their message was “religious”. Anyway, Jay has all the info so go take a look and decide for yourself. While you’re there toss a few bucks into the WAPO Fund. Jay wants to buy a full page ad in the Washington Post that is guaranteed to piss off every liberal lover of the ACLU. It’s a good cause. “Never miss an opportunity to piss off a Liberal” is my motto.

For those less seriously inclined, take a looksee over at the right sidebar. We’ve got a new advertiser starting today. It’s a way cool WWII strategy game called ”Squad Assault: Second Wave”. It’s a 3-D shooter and you’re in a platoon of infantry grunts in the second wave of troops trying to kick the hun out of “Fortress Europe”. There’s a downloadable demo (120 MB) that I just finished going through. Excellent graphics and lots of fun for everyone (except those poor unfortunate children of Liberals who might be emotionally scarred for life by a freaking game). Click on the link over there in the sidebar and go take a look. It won’t kill ya but it might keep you occupied for hours. Literally!

OldCatWoman?

Memo To OldCatMan: C’mon, dude .. confess! Is this your ex-wife or one of your neighbors perhaps? Inquiring minds want to know ....

imageimageAn older woman smokes a marijuana joint at Hempfest in Seattle, Washington. More than 150,000 people were expected to attend Hempfest at Seattle’s Myrtle Edwards Park on Seattle’s waterfront 21-22 August 2004. The event is billed as the world’s largest drug-policy reform rally.(AFP/Getty Images/Ron Wurzer)

From the HempFest web site: Seattle Hempfest advocates the decriminalization of marijuana for responsible adults, legal access to medical marijuana for patients who could be benefited by cannabis, and legal domestic hemp production. By producing a king size, world class event, Hempfest is demonstrating that cannabis enthusiasts are as responsible, professional, and successful as anyone else. Hempfest features extensive educational and informational content presented by some of the nation’s leading experts in the field of marijuana policy reform. We hope that all of this is contributing to the healthy, informed and energized local and national movement to change America’s pot laws.

Hempfest is first and foremost a political protest rally seeking to change America’s pot laws and to educate the public on the many uses of the cannabis plant. But it is also the largest collection of free Pacific Northwest (and beyond) music, as well as one of the largest street fairs in the world centering around cannabis. We like to call Hempfest a “protestival”, and think that we have created a new concept in political protest. Hempfest allows artists, speakers and even vendors to make a statement for pot reform by their involvement in our event.

Like .... Mellow!

Most Outrageous Item Of The Day

Honesty is always the best policy .... unless you’re a doctor and one of your patients is a fat broad who won’t stop stuffing her face or get any exercise. Then you better not tell the stupid beeyatch the truth or you’re in deep trouble. According to modern rules where people take offense and get their feelings hurt at the drop of a hat, you may get a letter of reprimand from the state, be forced to publicly apologize, have to attend sensitivity training and maybe even get sued ....

imageimageROCHESTER, N.H. (AP)—As doctors warn more patients that they should lose weight, the advice has backfired on one doctor with a woman filing a complaint with the state saying he was hurtful, not helpful. Dr. Terry Bennett says he tells obese patients their weight is bad for their health and their love lives, but the lecture drove one patient to complain to the state.

“I told a fat woman she was obese,” Bennett says. “I tried to get her attention. I told her, ‘You need to get on a program, join a group of like-minded people and peel off the weight that is going to kill you.’ “ He says he wrote a letter of apology to the woman when he found out she was offended.

Her complaint, filed about a year ago, was initially investigated by a panel of the New Hampshire Board of Medicine, which recommended that Bennett be sent a confidential letter of concern. The board rejected the suggestion in December and asked the attorney general’s office to investigate. Bennett rejected that office’s proposal that he attend a medical education course and acknowledge that he made a mistake.

Other overweight patients have come to Bennett’s defense. “What really makes me angry is he told the truth,” Mindy Haney told WMUR-TV on Tuesday. “How can you punish somebody for that?” Haney said Bennett has helped her lose more than 150 pounds, but acknowledged that the initially didn’t want to listen. “I have been in this lady’s shoes. I’ve been angry and left his practice. I mean, in-my-car-taking-off angry,” Haney said. “But once you think about it, you’re angry at yourself, not Doctor Bennett. He’s the messenger. He’s telling you what you already know.”

The human race is doomed, I tells ya! Doomed! All this sensitivity crap is starting to wear real thin on me. I’ve had just about enough. Either people start acting like grown-ups and stop pouting and whining at the least inkling of something that might be offensive or else I’m gonna have to take a number #12 ClueBat to each and every one of you pussified pantywaists out there. So get your fat, sorry ass off the couch, put down the cheese-doodles and go for a walk! And while you’re at it, get real or get your genes out of my pool!

Ask Professor Peabody

Sherman: Professor Peabody, the other day I heard a sports announcer say that the USC Trojans will be trying to pull off a ”hat trick” this year. What is a “hat trick” and why would a football team need to pull off a trick with their helmets?

Professor Peabody: Aha, Sherm! I’m glad you asked that question. This is a phrase sports fans hear all the time but most don’t know where the phrase came from. It is actually a cricket term from the 1800’s (surely you’ve heard of the British fondness for their unique game). When a player would take 3 wickets on three bowls it entitled the bowler to receive a hat from his club commemorating the feat. By the early 1900’s it was being used in other sports such as hockey, baseball, or football. It simply means to pull off what Americans call a “three-peat” or to win three in a row. The USC Trojans won the NCAA football championship twice in a row and this year are going for a “hat trick” or a “three-peat”. The odds are against them though. Can you name all of the NCAA football teams that have accomplished a “hat trick”? I have a lollipop for you if you can guess all five Division 1-A college football teams that have done this ....

imageimage Send your questions to Professor Peabody. All mysteries solved. Sorry, but access to the WAYBACK machine is strictly limited to official time travelers like Sherman and the Professor. Boris and Natasha will need Fearless Leader’s permission before submitting questions.

Winning Big

The good news: A Canadian couple won the lottery (C$7.5 million). The really good news: they’re both 89 years old. The really, really good news: all they want to do with the money is buy a new pair of nylons for her and a new car for him ....

TORONTO (Reuters) - An 89-year-old couple who won a C$7.5 million lottery jackpot plan to keep living in their retirement home and perhaps splurge on a new pair of nylons for her and a Lincoln car for him. Thelma and Victor Hayes, who have been married for 63 years, had played the same numbers for years but decided to go for a quick pick of random figures for the August 6 draw, Canadian media reported Tuesday.

The pair, who both turn 90 soon and have two daughters, said they were unlikely to become giddy high spenders."No plans, except I’m getting a new pair of nylons,” Thelma Hayes said. Her husband was a little more bold: “I’d like a Lincoln, if I can find one that’s suitable.” The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation said the Hayes are one of the oldest couples to win a big jackpot.

It seems to me this couple has already won the biggest lottery of all - they survived the dice game called “life” for nearly ninety years. So, what would you do if you won the lottery at that age? Buy new socks or a new bicycle?

Lunatics In Love

Today’s ”Lunatics In Love” story is brought to you by Dennis Kucinich, Shirley MacLaine, Sean Penn and the city of Cleveland ....

Kucinich Gets Hitched to British Woman

CLEVELAND (AP)—Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich has married a British woman, shedding the bachelor status that made headlines during his long-shot presidential campaign in 2004. Kucinich and Elizabeth Harper, who works for a monetary-policy think tank in Chicago, were married Sunday before some 250 guests outside City Hall, where he once served as mayor.

Guests included Shirley MacLaine and Sean Penn. MacLaine and Kucinich are longtime friends, and Penn endorsed the Democrat for president last year. “It was a lovely ceremony, and the congressman really wanted to do this in the heart of Cleveland,” said Kucinich’s spokesman, Doug Gordon.

It’s the third marriage for the twice-divorced Kucinich, 58. Gordon declined to reveal other information about Harper, including her age, how she met the congressman or how long they have been a couple.

Kucinich had told New Hampshire audiences during the campaign that he was seeking a mate. Women then vied for a date with him during a contest arranged by a New Hampshire political Web site, but nothing romantic evolved from Kucinich’s breakfast date with the winner.

It’s time for another Weekly Activity Report from CENTCOM (US Central Command), gang! Here’s all the news from Iraq and Afghanistan that the mainstream media refuses to report or even acknowledge. But that’s OK, ‘cause we know they’re all busy in Crawford covering real news, right ....? I want to personally thank SPC C. Flowers at CENTCOM Public Affairs for keeping me up to date on activities. OOH-AHH!

As always, a big thanks to all our troops and to CENTCOM (http://www.centcom.mil) for keeping us posted!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SUCCESSES THIS WEEK IN IRAQ (12-18 AUGUST 2005)

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Some of the Iraqi citizens benefiting from reconstruction this week were school children. Several projects were completed across the country, including school buildings. The Iraqi Security Forces continued to display their capability, and local citizens contributed to the security of their communities.

Children in Dobak Tappak village of Al Tamim Province received much-needed school supplies, clothing and toys from the Nahrain Foundation, a non-governmental organization that focuses on providing proper nutrition, decent clothing and medical supplies to Iraqi women and children. The foundation received its supplies as part of a joint effort between American donations and a Coalition forces-run program known as “Operation Provide School Supplies,” which accepts donations from private citizens and corporations in the U.S.

More than 600 children will return to renovated or rebuilt schools in Maysan Province when school starts this fall. This week, renovation on the Al-Eethnar Mud School was completed, and the Al Eethar Mud School was replaced at a cost of $87,000, benefiting 500 students who attend classes there.

In addition to reconstruction on schools, eight newly constructed schools in Wassit and Babil Provinces are receiving new furniture before the start of the school year. Each of the school projects will receive office desks and chairs, file cabinets and new student desks. Collectively, 400 three-student desks will be proportionally divided among the schools, based upon the number of students.

More reconstruction projects in Sadr City started this week, including the $13 million electrical distribution project for sectors one through eight. When complete, an estimated 128,000 people will have a reliable source of electricity. The project includes installation of power lines, 3,040 power poles, 80 transformers, 2,400 street lights, and power connections to individual homes, complete with meters.

Construction started on the $3.8 million Al Rayash Electricity Substation project in Al Daur District of Salah Ad Din Province, located between Tikrit and Bayji. The project, which is expected to be completed in early December, will provide reliable service to 50,000 Iraqi homes and small businesses. An electric distribution and street lighting project in Daquq was completed on Aug. 17, providing new overhead distribution lines and street lighting in the community.

Approximately two million people will benefit from the Baghdad trunk sewer line, which was completed this week. Workers cleaned and repaired the Baghdad trunk sewer line and its associated manholes and pumping stations. The $17.48 million project restored principal sewage collection elements in the Adhamiya, Sadr City and 9-Nissan districts of Baghdad, and will provide for the intended sewer flows to the Rustamiya wastewater treatment plant.

In Basrah, construction is complete on phase one of the $865,000 Basrah courthouse project. This five-phase project is expected to be entirely complete in October of 2005. This main courthouse in Basrah, expected to hold a number of high profile trials, continues to operate during construction. Iraqi subcontractors are working on the project, and employing an average of 70 local Iraqi workers daily.

Iraqi security forces benefited from reconstruction projects this week as well. A patrol station in the Karkh district of Baghdad Province was completed, as was a $390,300 border-post project on the Saudi Arabian border. A division headquarters building for the Iraqi Army in Salah Ad Din Province was also completed this week. The $7 million project includes a single-story building with a concrete roof and interior office space to accommodate the unit. Additionally, a $2 million firing range in Taji was completed this week.

To accommodate additional detainees, a new prison project was started in Khan Bani Sa’ad, a mountainous municipality in the Ba’quba District of Diyala Province. The $75 million project will house up to 3,600 inmates. The entire site is approximately 550,000 square meters, which includes an educational center, medical facilities and administration buildings. The project will employ approximately 1,000 Iraqi workers during construction.

In another move that highlights the increasing turnover of security responsibilities to Iraqi forces, generals from Iraqi and Coalition forces joined local tribal leaders at a ceremony where Forward Operating Base Dagger in Tikrit, one of Saddam Hussein’s former palaces, was officially handed over to the 4th Iraqi Army Division this week.

Iraqi Security Forces continued training this week. In Taji, Iraqi soldiers completed a Strategic Infrastructure Battalion Train-the-Trainer course. The 90 graduates will go on to serve as instructors at an Iraqi Army training base. A class of future IA non-commissioned officers graduated from their primary leadership development course on Aug. 15 in Tikrit. Iraqi Army unit training also included combat lifesaving, staff training, computer skills and weapons training.

This week, the 1st Iraqi Army Brigade succeeded at implementing the first Non-commissioned Officer Academy in the country. Iraqi soldiers from the most recent class were the last group to be instructed by the U.S. Soldiers who had developed the training. During Saddam Hussein’s regime, an NCO corps did not exist in the Iraqi Army. The class will continue after the U.S. instructors leave, and will be taught by NCOs from the 1st IA who assisted earlier courses.

Baghdad police continued to demonstrate their capabilities this week. Iraqi Police Service officers in the New Baghdad District conducted a variety of operations including raids involving over 450 officers. Police confiscated 30 AK-47 rifles, two hand guns, and one machine gun during the raids.

They also arrested 30 suspected insurgents, three of whom were targeted in the raids. In addition, police at the Al Khanssa Police Station in Baghdad captured a kidnapper involved in the abduction of a local physician, whose family paid a ransom to have the victim released. Following the arrest, police officers recovered the doctor’s vehicle as well as the ransom money paid by his family.

Iraqi Army soldiers found a weapons cache under a vehicle in Rawah this week. The cache contained two light machine guns and 3000 rounds of ammunition, nine AK-47 rifles and 500 rounds of ammunition, one NATO machine gun and 200 rounds of ammunition, four concussion grenades, one fragmentary grenade without fuses, and various other ammunition.

Based on two separate tips from Iraqis, Coalition forces discovered weapons caches that contained rocket-propelled grenades and two launchers, 16 mortar rounds and a launcher, and five boxes of anti-aircraft ammunition hidden in northwest Baghdad.

Another tip led Coalition forces to a large cache of artillery shells in the early hours of Aug. 16. The shells were apparently intended for use as improvised explosive devices. The 25 to 30 individual rounds, located inside a building within Al Anbar Province, were destroyed after security forces confirmed there was no one in the building.

After a local Iraqi identified his neighbors as insurgents, Iraqi Army soldiers and Coalition forces conducted a joint cordon and search operation in northwest Fallujah and detained two suspects.

Iraqi Security Forces killed terrorist Abu Zubair, also known as Mohammed Salah Sultan, in an ambush in the northern city of Mosul this week. Zubair, who was wearing a suicide vest when he was killed, was a known member of Al Qaeda in Iraq and a lieutenant in Jordanian terrorist Abu Musab Zarqawi’s terrorist operations in Mosul. He was being sought for his involvement in a July suicide bombing attack of a police station in Mosul that killed five Iraqi police officers. He was also suspected of resourcing and facilitating suicide bomber attacks against Coalition, Iraqi Security Forces and Iraqi citizens throughout the country.

Local Iraqi citizens, along with the growing Iraqi Security Forces, are contributing to the security of their communities. Reconstruction efforts also provided Iraqis with improved basic services, paving the way for a safe and secure environment.

It’s All Your Fault!!

Yes, I’m talking to you! You on the other side of this monitor, sitting there in your underwear eating Cheet-O’s. You had your chance back in 1995 to do the right thing but NOOOOOOOOOOO .... you just had to send the money. You picked up the phone and gave them your credit card number or you wrote out a check, licked the stamp and yelled “Praise The Lord” as you deposited it at the Post Office. All of you out there who cribbed your social security checks together are to blame.

God asked for $8 million and was holding Pat Roberston for ransom. You knew it was true because Pat Robertson told you so. Well, I hope you’re happy now. God got his money and Robertson was left unharmed. No biblical plague descended on his house and the frogs rained elsewhere than on his head. You had your chance and you blew it. You could have thumbed your nose at God and told Him to go ahead and take Robertson. But you didn’t. Now you have to contend with this kind of crap from the $8 Million Dollar Man ....

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (AP)—Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson has suggested that American agents assassinate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to stop his country from becoming “a launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism.” An official of a theological watchdog group on Tuesday criticized Robertson’s statement as “chilling.” “We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability,” Robertson said Monday on the Christian Broadcast Network’s “The 700 Club.”

“We don’t need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator,” he continued. “It’s a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with.” Chavez has emerged as one of the most outspoken critics of President Bush, accusing the United States of conspiring to topple his government and possibly backing plots to assassinate him. U.S. officials have called the accusations ridiculous.

“You know, I don’t know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we’re trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it,” Robertson said. “It’s a whole lot cheaper than starting a war ... and I don’t think any oil shipments will stop.” On Tuesday, critics objected to Robertson’s statements. “It’s absolutely chilling to hear a religious leader call for the murder of any political leader, no matter how much he disagrees with such a leader’s policies or practices,” said the Rev. Barry Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

David Brock, president of Media Matters, a liberal media watchdog group, said the remarks should discredit Robertson as a spokesman for the religious right. Robertson, 75, founder of the Christian Coalition of America and a former presidential candidate, accused the United States of failing to act when Chavez was briefly overthrown in 2002. A Robertson spokeswoman, Angell Watts, said he would not do interviews Tuesday and had no statement elaborating on his remarks.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
