Dennis The Menace

Run away! Run away! The National Hurricane Center says this one will be a bad one. Of course, if my ex-wife is still living in Mobile I have a message for her .... “STAY THERE, BEEYATCH! IT’S SAFE!” Hehehehehehe ......

LATEST ADVISORY FROM NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AT 1:00AM EDT

AFTER DEEPENING AT A RATE THAT BORDERED ON INSANE DURING THE AFTERNOON...DENNIS HAS CONTINUED TO STRENGTHEN AT A MORE NORMAL RATE THIS EVENING.  REPORTS FROM AN AIR FORCE RESERVE HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT SHOW THAT THE CENTRAL PRESSURE HAS FALLEN TO 941 MB...WITH MAXIMUM FLIGHT-LEVEL WINDS OF 122 KT IN THE NORTHEAST QUADRANT.  BASED ON THIS...THE INITIAL INTENSITY IS 110 KT.  IT IS EXPECTED THAT WHEN THE AIRCRAFT AGAIN SAMPLES THE NORTHEAST EYEWALL THAT IT WILL FIND STRONGER WINDS THAT WILL JUSTIFY UPGRADING DENNIS TO A CATEGORY FOUR HURRICANE.  IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT ALTHOUGH DENNIS HAS A VERY LARGE OUTER WIND FIELD… THE HURRICANE FORCE WINDS ARE CONFINED TO A VERY SMALL AREA NEAR THE CENTER.

AT 1 AM EDT...0500Z...THE CENTER OF HURRICANE DENNIS WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 27.0 NORTH...LONGITUDE 85.6 WEST OR ABOUT 235 MILES SOUTH OF PANAMA CITY FLORIDA AND ABOUT 310 MILES SOUTHEAST OF BILOXI MISSISSIPPI. DENNIS IS MOVING TOWARD THE NORTHWEST NEAR 14 MPH.  A GRADUAL TURN TOWARD THE NORTH-NORTHWEST IS EXPECTED TODAY.  THIS MOTION WILL BRING THE CENTER OF DENNIS ACROSS THE NORTHERN GULF COAST LATER TODAY.

REPORTS FROM AN AIR FORCE RESERVE HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT INDICATE THAT MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS HAVE INCREASED TO NEAR 135 MPH...WITH HIGHER GUSTS.  THIS MAKES DENNIS A CATEGORY FOUR HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON SCALE.  SOME ADDITIONAL STRENGTHENING IS POSSIBLE BEFORE LANDFALL.

HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 40 MILES FROM THE CENTER...AND TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 230 MILES.  HURRICANE FORCE WINDS ASSOCIATED WITH DENNIS MAY OCCUR AS FAR AS 150 TO 175 MILES INLAND ALONG THE TRACK OF THE HURRICANE.

AN AIR FORCE HURRICANE HUNTER PLANE RECENTLY REPORTED A MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE OF 937 MB...27.67 INCHES.

STORM SURGE FLOODING OF 14 TO 17 FEET ABOVE NORMAL TIDE LEVELS...ACCOMPANIED BY LARGE AND DANGEROUS BATTERING WAVES...IS POSSIBLE NEAR AND TO THE EAST OF WHERE THE CENTER OF DENNIS CROSSES THE NORTHERN GULF COAST ON SUNDAY.  STORM SURGE WILL GRADUALLY DECREASE ALONG THE LOWER FLORIDA KEYS TONIGHT. A STORM SURGE OF 2 TO 4 FEET IS POSSIBLE ALONG THE SOUTHWESTERN COAST OF FLORIDA TONIGHT AND SUNDAY MORNING.

IN MEMORIAM:  H.M.S. WARSPITE

imageimageIn Pearl Harbor, on a morning in early August 1941, Theodore (Ted) Mason, a radioman aboard USS California BB-44, got off morning watch and climbed four ladders to the forecastle for a breath of air.  And there, moored across the channel at “Ten-Ten” dock, a surprise guest lay at anchor, “a strange and obviously venerable battleship…..flying the White Ensign.”

Mason accosted a nearby coxswain and asked, “What ship’s that, Mac?”

“Limey battlewagon.  The Warspite.  She was in the Battle of Jutland.”

“The Warspite!  I’ll be damned!”

Mason was destined to be one of the American sailors who toured the British battleship, a contemporary of the battlewagons riding at anchor in Pearl.  In the first volume of his memoirs, Battleship Sailor (Annapolis:  Naval Institute Press, 1982), White recounts his experiences and impressions.

Every schoolboy had read about Jutland, the epic naval engagement between the British Grand Fleet and the German High Seas Fleet on 31 May 1916.  Accordingly, I knew about the Warspite.  Then a nearly new dreadnought, turning in circles with a jammed rudder, she had shaken off salvo after salvo from Scheer’s main battle fleet while returning a murderous fire against the German battleships and Hipper’s force of battle cruisers.  Now here she was at Pearl Habor twenty-give years later, 30,000 tons of naval history.

Send In The Clowns

I have found the perfect protest group for OldCatMan. In fact, I might join this group myself just for the entertainment value. Yes sirree folks, this is it.  The wave of the future.  The way to protest that’s catching on all over the globe.

I give you: The Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown Army

That’s right. Clowns.  Clowns as protesters.  An army of assclowns.  They have it all: Recruiting, training, operations manuals…all of it.  I found this part of their ops manual particularly funny:

imageimageThings to stuff your pockets with:

In order to mock the stop and search terrorist laws, which are regularly used to intimidate protestors, CIRCA clownbattants fill their pockets to the brim (which often makes CIRCA members seem more portly than they actually are!) with stupid things – strings of sausages, underwear, rubber ducks, pink furry stuffed pigs, sex toys, miniature garden gnomes, old bones, small tanks, rubber ducks, plungers and more, which all have to be laid out on the street and documented by the police during searches. Dozens of police officers searching an army of clowns is a weird enough sight, but when members of the public see all the objects being taken out the absurdity of the situation overflows.

We are rebels because we love life and happiness more than ‘revolution’. Because no revolution is ever complete and rebellions continues forever. Because we will dismantle the ghost-machine of abstraction with means that are indistinguishable from ends. Because we don’t want to change ‘the’ world, but ‘our’ world. Because we will always desert and disobey those who abuse and accumulate power. Because rebels transform everything - the way they live, create, love, eat, laugh, play, learn, trade, listen, think and most of all the way they rebel.

We are clowns because what else can one be in such a stupid world. Because inside everyone is a lawless clown trying to escape. Because nothing undermines authority like holding it up to ridicule. Because since the beginning of time tricksters have embraced life’s contradictions, creating coherence through confusion. Because fools are both fearsome and innocent, wise and stupid, entertainers and dissenters, healers and laughing stocks, scapegoats and subversives. Because buffoons always succeed in failing, always say yes, always hope and always feel things deeply. Because a clown can survive everything and get away with anything.

The Agony And The Ecstacy

This is turning out to be more fun than any human should ever be allowed to enjoy. No, I’m not talking about what I’m doing right now. I’m talking about what most of you have been doing for hours .... sleeping, that is.

The Ol’ Skipper has been hard at it since midnight. The ship has already been through some stormy seas here and we’ve lost a few yards of mainsail in the process. We’re taking on water but the bilge pumps are going full blast and so far the crew seems to be winning the war against the elements.

Yes, I’m talking about the @*(#%&(@#*&)(* blog software upgrade. It turns out pMachine made some radical changes this time. If anyone else out there is running Expression Engine and you are about to upgrade, take my advice .... DON’T CALL ME WITH YOUR PROBLEMS! Hell, I can’t remember all the little things I had to do to get it working this well so far.

All my little PHP code hacks are blowing up on me. I’ve had to remove avatar display temporarily until I can get the new global variable map figured out and the random quotes, comment leaders, etc. are blowing up too. At the moment (4:00am) I have disabled most of them and am in the process of debugging them all and adding them back one by one.

The good news is that I have the new Discussion Forums module working and configured. I’ve set up a few initial forums for you pirates to settle into and enjoy with your grog and chips. You can visit the Discussion Forums by clicking here. I can’t guarantee that it’s working 100% yet. I’ll keep you updated though. Watch this post for further developments. I will post this in the forums “Announcements” section as well.

Stay tuned. This saga of human suffering is just beginning ....

Update I: It looks like the “comment leaders” code is hopelessly broken for now. Everything else is gradually coming back. I just got the avatars variables sorted out and my ugly face is back on the posts. Next, I’ll see if I can get your ugly beautiful faces back in your comments. Random quotes are back working again. That wasn’t fun.  It’s almost 5:30am. Stay tuned ....

Update II: Final update for the time being. I have the avatars finally straightened out but I don’t have time to reset all 590 members. Actually, I’m just too tired. I reset a few of the older members and some newer ones who comment regularly and I’ll leave the rest to each of you to reset. Once you login, click on the ”Your Account” link in the top right sidebar (under ”Member Information”) and when you get to your user account screen, lick on ”Edit Avatar”. From there, you may select from our ”Default Set”, which contains over 100 avatars, or you may upload your own avatar (read the instructions: it must be no larger than 64 x 64). If you want me to send you your old avatar, just drop me an e-mail or post something in the forums. Sorry, but no off-site avatars may be used - you must either select one from the default set or upload your own avatar. pMachine evidently decided not to include a URL entry form like I had it before.

Now, I’m going to go to bed and get some sleep. Feel free to bang around the site, visit the forums and let me know what you think. Let me know if I overlooked something or something isn’t working right. I’ll let you fine folks be my Quality Assurance Team today. Have at it!

I’m So Proud

OK, gang! Show of hands time ........

How many of you remember a new member who joined this blog last Fall named Kristen? Maybe you remember her from her screen name: Nefarious Ferret?

No? Don’t remember? Well, let me refresh your memory. Kristen was in high school and she was going nuts with all the ridiculous drivel they teach in today’s schools. She found comrades here and she loved the posts about the deplorable state of education in America today. She also had an effect on the other members. This loud, screeching, hard-cussing bunch of old farts (and I don’t include the ladies in that crowd) suddenly started minding their manners and toned down their language whenever Kristen showed up. It was hilarious for me to watch as this hard-nosed bunch took this little lady under their wing.

Anyway, fast forward to Spring of this year. Kristen announced that she had been accepted at the US Air Force Academy and would be starting the orientation part of her education this summer. There weren’t a dry eye in the house. All the old fools around here started celebrating. Myself included.

Now we come to the surprise news announcement (you old grouches can get out your tissue now). Kristen’s father, Mike joined the blog here a week ago and sent me an e-mail to let me know she is out at the Academy and beginning her training. Like any other boot camp, she is out of communication for a while but he did manage to grab a picture of the swearing-in ceremony. So ladies and germs, without further ado, I present to you ........ Nefarious Ferret .... soon to be (in four years) another brown bar in the USAF. I’m sure she’ll be much better than the ignorant ones I had to serve under way back when ....

Another Great Blog Site

I just got an e-mail from another great blogger out there. How do I know it’s a great blog? I went and read. I especially like the blog’s name: StopTheACLU.com.

I just like the name. Plus, there’s plenty of good reading material on this nefarious organaization. Now if someone would just start up ScrewTheACLU.com or BlowUpTheACLU.com, I’d be a happy camper.

I’ve added this great site to our blogroll. Go give ‘em a visit. I think you’ll like it ....

Speaking Of Gitmo ….

The detainees at Gitmo should be peeing in their pants right about now ....

Hurricane Lashes Cuba With 150 Mph Winds

imageimageGUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL STATION, Cuba - Packing devastating 150 mph winds, Hurricane Dennis tore down a guard tower at the U.S. detention camp for terror suspects as it stalked Cuba’s south coast and prepared Friday to strike into the heart of the largest Caribbean island.

The U.S. detention camp on Cuba’s extreme southeast end that holds some 520 terror suspects was spared overnight. Heaving surf tore away a lifeguard tower at Windmill Beach and storm force winds reaching 40 mph destroyed a bus shelter. A few power lines and tree branches were knocked down and there was minor flooding.

“Actually, everybody fared real well,” said Navy Cmdr. Anne Reese.

On Thursday, troops watched from a cliff as the churning Atlantic Ocean threw up massive waves of salt spray that towered over the razor wire fence surrounding the camp at Guantanamo Bay. The troops fixed metal shutters over the steel mesh windows of some prison cells overlooking the sea at Camp Delta, which is just 150 yards from the ocean.

Just A Thought ….

imageimageIt just occurred to me that most of England’s intelligence services and police resources were probably concentrated up North in Scotland to protect the current G8 conference. With masses of liberal protestors showing up to stir up trouble, cause destruction and just generally try to make asses out of themselves, the British probably had no choice but to pull all available law enforcement and intelligence forces to Scotland.

This would have left London and other areas of England seriously under-staffed during the G8 meeting. This would also have been a prime time to set off bombs with the police and intelligence personnel far away to the North. I’m not what I consider a conspiracy nut but this just fits too perfectly.

Following this thought to its logical conclusion, I have determined that the liberal protestors and activists in Scotland this week were either (a) unwitting tools of the bombers or (b) direct accomplices in the bombing attacks. Either way, they deserve some heavy jail time. Neither the British nor the US can afford to continue coddling these mangy specimens who show up at important world meetings with their long hair, naked unwashed bodies and flaming hatred. I say we take back the rubber bullets the police have to “handle” these idiots. Give the cops some real bullets. Case closed.

What say you?

Released Gitmo Detainee One Of London’s Bombers?

I just got this link (thanks to Rat Patrol) from Northeast Intelligence Network web site (story is about halfway down page) ....

7 July 2005; 12:54 ET: Preliminary reports from a source inside the Pentagon indicate that one of the operatives involved in this morning’s bombings in London was recently released from the prison at Guantanamo.

UPDATED 10:35 PM ET: A clarification was made by the source providing this information, noting that “one of the bombers who is believed to be involved in this attack was recently released from the prison at Guantanamo, Cuba.” The source did not elaborate about how the suspect was reportedly identified so early, although suggested he was onboard bus 30 that exploded outside of the British Medical Association at 9:47 local time. We are continuing our investigation.

If this story turns out to be true, the s**t is about to hit the fan. I am personally going to start an e-mail and snail-mail campaign against every Liberal Democratic Congressman and Senator who has been crying lately about the poor prisoners in Gitmo. THERE IS A VERY GOOD REASON WHY YOU KEEP ASSHATS IN JAIL - TO KEEP THEM FROM COMMITTING MORE CRIMES, DAMMIT!

Important Middle East News

At the Middle East Daily today the bombings in London are covered in a short paragraph about halfway down the page while the top story is about how Saudis are deeply offended and angry at Oprah Winfrey ....

Cairo - US talk show presenter Oprah Winfrey has generated a wave of outraged protest in Saudi Arabia with a report on Saudi television presenter Rania al-Bas, who was almost beaten to death by her husband last year.

The Saudis are particularly enraged because Winfrey called out to her viewers at the end of the June broadcast: “Thank God we live in America.”

The journalist Essam al-Ghalib, who had helped Winfrey’s team last year to secure an interview with Al-Bas, wrote on Thursday in the newspaper Arab News: “Oprah, please don’t call me again.”

Al-Ghalib accused the star of using both him and Al-Bas to create a false picture of Saudi society through the show, which is generally seen by Saudis through the MBC network with Arab subtitles.

He said Oprah’s producers had led both of them to believe the theme of the show would be victims of family violence all over the world.

Storm Of The Century?

There is a monster brewing to the south of the US. Hurricane Dennis is already a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 135 mph. Look out, Florida! It’s heading your way ....

imageimageMIAMI, Florida (CNN)—Packing winds of at least 135 mph, Hurricane Dennis battered eastern Cuba early Friday, and the National Hurricane Center cautioned the storm might strengthen even further before bearing down on the lower Florida Keys and moving into the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

As of 5 a.m. ET, the eye of the Category 4 hurricane was about 275 miles southeast of Havana, Cuba, and about 320 miles south-southeast of Key West, Florida. Dennis was moving northwest at about 16 mph, and its eye was expected to reach central Cuba later Friday. After that, the three-day forecast track shows the storm could impact the U.S. Gulf Coast anywhere from southwest Florida to southeast Louisiana. On its current path, projected landfall would be along the Florida Panhandle near Pensacola Sunday evening, though such predictions usually change due to the unpredictable behavior of hurricanes.

“The whole Florida Gulf Coast, and even over to Alabama and Mississippi—they need to pay very, very close attention to Hurricane Dennis,” National Hurricane Center director Max Mayfield said late Thursday. At Category 4, forecasters characterized Dennis as “extremely dangerous,” capable of causing extensive damage and flooding. The most destructive hurricane class is Category 5. The eye is expected to remain over very warm water for about 12 more hours before landfall in Cuba, so additional strengthening is possible ....

That probably means Dennis will be a strong Category 5 when it hits the Gulf Coast. If you live anywhere there, take heed of the warning and stay tuned to weather reports.

Stiff Upper Lip

Londoners are going back to work today after the attacks yesterday left 50 dead and hundreds injured. The buses and “tubes” are operational again, except for a few lines where the attacks occurred. Police are on the lookout for more bombs ....

(BBC) Many Londoners are back at work as Tubes, buses and trains slowly return to normal after Thursday’s bombings. Most Tube lines are running, but with limited services, and the Hammersmith and City and Circle lines remain shut. Buses are running and all mainline rail stations are open, although services from King’s Cross are limited. Roads and trains are quieter than usual and security alerts mean streets and stations are continually closing and reopening across the city.
