Syrian terrorists have beheaded a Catholic priest who they accused of collaborating with the Assad regime. Those accusations have not yet been verified. Father Francois was summarily executed and the Vatican has confirmed the martyrdom.
VATICAN CITY (Catholic Online) - The Vatican is confirming the death by beheading of Franciscan Father, Francois Murad, who was martyred by Syrian jihadists on June 23.
Below is the news release from the Vatican, via news.va.
On Sunday, June 23 the Syrian priest François Murad was killed in Gassanieh, in northern Syria, in the convent of the Custody of the Holy Land where he had taken refuge. This is confirmed by a statement of the Custos of the Holy Land sent to Fides Agency. The circumstances of the death are not fully understood. According to local sources, the monastery where Fr. Murad was staying was attacked by militants linked to the jihadi group Jabhat al-Nusra.
Father François, 49, had taken the first steps in the religious life with the Franciscan Friars of the Custody of the Holy Land, and with them he continued to share close bonds of spiritual friendship. After being ordained a priest he had started the construction of a coenobitic monastery dedicated to St. Simon Stylites in the village of Gassanieh.After the start of the Civil War, the monastery of St. Simon had been bombed and Fr. Murad had moved to the convent of the Custody for safety reasons and to give support to the remaining few, along with another religious and nuns of the Rosary.
This should make it clear to Christians around the world what jihadists are about. Make no mistake. Catholics and Christians around the globe are under dire threat, particularly from the spread of militant Islam. Until the threat is recognized and taken seriously, martyrdoms like this will continue.

Catholic Online believes it is very important the world knows that Christians are being murdered for their faith, and that martyrdom isn’t an ancient phenomenon.

I don’t have the words and just don’t know what to say that has not been said already. These aren’t people. They are vermin in human form. You might have said it better.
The Brits by which I mean their govt. not the population they are supposed to represent, are all hot for arming the good rebels against that nasty Assad fellow.
If you ask them just who are the good guys here, they have no answer that I’ve heard. The PM here has been hot to trot for awhile, never mind that the country is hurting in many ways and most folks are damn sorry their troops ever went there and see no good in it. And now Obama appears to be falling into line somewhat, in that I understand him to now being agreeable to sticking the American nose into Syria by way of help of some kind to the rebels.

German police foil terror plot.
I am not even a little bit surprised. If anything surprises me it’s that the scum had not planned it years ago using this method. I always thought it could be done.
Good for the cops catching these bastards but catching this one group is not enough.
The country should be cleansed of this vermin because sooner or later, these peace loving members of the ROP will succeed. I hope not of course but I’m thinking law of averages.
Europe should make itself muslim free by any means necessary. Of course we know they won’t, so kiss the Fatherland and the rest of Europe goodbye.
It is not that Europe doesn’t recognize the threat. The problem is that Europe will NOT do what is necessary because the methods would look like the 1930s.
And appearances count more than national safety and survival I guess.
If only the Nazis had not been so damn stupid and one way and stubborn. Everything was written in stone for them and could never be changed. There was no reasoning with them. Only agreeing. And now the world is paying for their intransigence with multi culture, forced diversity and the dictatorship of political correctness, open borders and the brain washing of generations for the armies of the left. It appears to me that only Nazi methods will reverse the tide and restore any normalcy to the world. And that’s a scary thought.

Police in Germany have raided dozens of addresses to foil an Islamist terror plot intending to use remote controlled model aircraft filled with explosives to be flown into targets.
Armed officers of the specialist G9G units raided homes in Stuttgart, Munich and Dachau after receiving information that at least one assassination attempt was being planned using the model planes as guided missiles.
Technical materials and paperwork were seized at several addresses while prosecutors spoke of plans for a ‘seditious outrage’.
German intelligence officers have been warning for some time of a home-grown attack inside the country’s borders as more and more Islamists return from Jihadist training camps in Pakistan ready to commit terrorist acts.
As well as the addresses in southern Germany, an Internet service provider in the state of Saxony was also raided. At least two men are in custody and authorities say the operations will continue as more intelligence is gathered.
No information was given about likely targets or exactly which Jihadist organisation the suspects are affiliated with.
One of the addresses raided was at the Olympic Village in Munich, scene of the 1972 Olympic massacre when fanatics of the Black September movement stormed the living quarters of Israeli athletes. All eleven hostages later died in a shootout at Munich Airport.
Prosecutors said that the arrests were linked to a plot centred on Islamist ‘Holy war’ but gave no further details.
German media reported that some model aircraft, which are powerful and big enough to carry explosives capable of destroying a commerical building, were seized in the raids early this morning.
The paperwork taken from several of the suspect addresses also relates to money laundering necessary to fund the planned outrages, according to media reports. The suspects are of Tunisian descent.
Germany’s Office for the Protection of the Constitution, which deals with internal terror threats, said only recently in its annual report that the country remains a ‘top target’ for Islamist fanatics for its support for NATO operations in Afghanistan.

Why not?
Because this is what those “children” grow into anyway. So what difference should it make exactly when we kill them?
I think it’s now referred to as pre-emptive strikes.
I’m okay with that. Besides, if they can kill their own people including the kids as we know they do everyday, why should we feel squeamish ?

What, again? Again??
I dunno ... Sudden Jihad Syndrome again? And/Or a mental patient with illegal access to firearms?
A fifth victim in the Santa Monica shooting rampage has died, the family confirmed on Sunday. Marcela Franco, 26, was taken off life support at a hospital on Saturday night, said her cousin between sobs. She was shot along with her father, Carlos Navarro Franco, who also died on Friday, when a gunman shot at the SUV they were riding in near Santa Monica College.
They were picking up books for summer classes at the college when they were shot, the college’s president said. Marcela Franco was a student at Cal State Dominguez Hills and had registered to attend Santa Monica College this summer.
They were among six fatalities, including the gunman, in Friday’s shooting rampage. The suspected gunman has been identified as John Samir Zawahri, according to Santa Monica police.
The suspect’s father, Samir Zawahri, 55, and brother Christopher Zawahri, 24, were killed in the rampage, their bodies found in their burned home, Santa Monica police confirmed on Sunday.
The entire ordeal lasted about 13 minutes, Santa Monica Police Sgt. Richard Lewis said Saturday.
Below is a rough timeline of the shooting rampage, based on information provided by Lewis at a news conference Saturday afternoon.
- 11:52 a.m.: Police receive report of shots fired in the 2000 block of Yorkshire Avenue. First responders arrive to find a home engulfed in flames and a female driver suffering from a gunshot wound.
- he gunman carjacks a female driver at gunpoint and orders her to drive. They travel down Pico Boulevard toward Santa Monica College.
- Two people are later found dead in a back room of the house. The fire is believed to have started in the front of the 1,000-square-foot home, Santa Monica Fire Department Chief Scott Ferguson said. It is not yet known what time or how the fire started. [ victims are Zawahri’s father and brother ]
- 11:56 a.m.: Witnesses report seeing and hearing shots fired at a Santa Monica Big Blue Bus at Cloverfield and Pico boulevards.
- 12:02 p.m.: Police receive calls of shots fired at Cloverfield Boulevard and Pearl Street.
- A 68-year-old man is fatally shot while driving a red Ford Explorer near Lot 1 on Santa Monica College campus. His passenger is also shot. [ this turned out to be Carlos Franco and his daughter Marcela]
- The gunman scrambles onto campus, dropping a bag later found to be filled with magazines and a handgun. He heads toward the library.
- 12:05 p.m.: One of three police officers involved in a gun battle with the shooter announces over his radio that the gunman has been killed.
And just like that it was over. And aside from the shooter’s name, that he was a mental patient at some point, the name of the victims, and that this happened the day before the shooter’s 24th birthday, that’s about all we know at this point. My God, it took me longer to research and write this post than the entire event itself.
Some pro-active defenses, not of the shooter but against the expected media circus ... which oddly hasn’t happened yet, and Freepers wonder why. And of course our government says “lone shooter, no connection to any terrorist network, not terrorism”. Guess they have to phone records to know, right? Nothing to see here, move along, entirely a random coincidence that the killer is of some sort of Eastern ethnicity (Lebanese?)
But anyway ... Clayton E. Cramer at PJ Media covers all the bases: in theory it was impossible for Zawahri to have an assault weapon, or a handgun, or that huge bag of 30 round magazines ...
According to news accounts, the killer used an “assault-style weapon.” Unsurprisingly, the 24-year-old killer had a history of mental illness, a run-in with the police, and had been hospitalized at some point in the last few years (although it remains unclear if this was voluntary or involuntary). As regular readers of my columns know, this is the heart of the mass murder problem, not just in America, but in Europe and Canada as well.
But how could this happen? California has had an assault weapons ban since 1989, progressively tightened over a decade. This law has been on the books, and enforced, since the killer was born. The only lawful way for a Californian to possess a high-capacity magazine is if he owned it before 2000 – when the killer was eleven years old. California passed a firearms-transfer background check requirement that took effect on January 1, 1991, which checks not only for felony and violent misdemeanor convictions and pending charges, but also for involuntary mental hospital commitments. Even if you are only held for 72 hour observation and then determined to be not crazy enough for longer term treatment, you are ineligible to possess a firearm for five years. The shooter was 24– unless he was hospitalized between 18 and 19, he could not have legally purchased any firearm. You can’t drive across the border into Arizona or Nevada to legally buy a gun; federal law prohibits such transfers unless your state of residence allows such transfers — and California does not.
So we are again left with the question: how did the killer get this gun? It would seem as though he broke a stack of laws, without much of a struggle
Another day, another mass murder, another passel of laws that just don’t work. Welcome to the New Normal. I don’t like it one bit.

A uniformed French soldier on anti-terrorist duties in Paris had his throat cut by a knife-wielding man tonight.
The savage attack follows the murder of a British soldier by two men using weapons including knives and a meat cleaver. One of the suspects said they were acting in the name of Islam.
Today there were fears that the Paris attack was a copy-cat crime and that a radical Muslim might once more be responsible.
Police in the French capital described the attacker as a being ‘bearded, of North African origin and wearing a light coloured jihab’ under a jacket.
He pounced on the 23-year-old soldier outside a Virgin store in La Defence, the business district of the city which was packed with Saturday afternoon shoppers.
The attack on a soldier in Paris was being treated as a ‘terrorist incident’, said a source at the Paris prosecutors office.
‘The anti-terrorist branch of the prosecutors office is dealing with the matter,’ the source added.
The soldier was knifed as a he patrolled around the suburban railway station for RER A service which links the French capital with the suburbs.
Pierre-Andre Peyvel, prefect of the Hauts-de-Seine district, said the soldier’s wounds were ‘serious enough’.
The soldier is currently at the nearby Percy hospital.
‘Thousands of people were in the area at the time of the attack,’ said Mr Peyvel. ‘It would have been quite easy to blend into the crowd and then disappear.’
‘The attack happened just after 6pm,’ said a police source. ‘The soldier was stabbed repeatedly, most notably in the throat.
‘The attacker ran away and the military are still looking for him, supported by the police. He is around 30 years old and of Arab appearance.
‘The wounded soldier was taken to a local railway station for treatment and then on to hospital.’
The source said that the soldier’s life was not in danger, but he was ‘badly hurt’.
And here is what the French President had to say. Nobody here at BMEWS will take surprise at the comment. He is after all, an avowed lefty and this is how they think.

There Are None So Blind As Those Who Will Not See
A dramatic video emerged tonight of a man with bloodied hands, carrying knives and ranting ‘We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you’, after a serving soldier was hacked to death by two men just 200 yards from an Army barracks.
The man can be seen and heard talking to the camera in footage obtained by ITV News.
It came as terrified eyewitnesses saw two men shot by police marksmen after the machete attack in Woolwich, south-east London.
It is thought that the two men waited around for 20 minutes until police arrived and then tried to attack them - but were swiftly shot by armed officers including a woman.
They apparently shouted ‘Allah Akbar’, which means ‘God is great’ in Arabic, and tried to film the attack, the BBC’s political editor Nick Robinson said.
The man is believed to have been hacked to death after a car crash. The scene of the attack is just 200 yards from Woolwich Barracks.
[local MP] Mr Raynsford said: ‘We think a serving soldier was the victim. We don’t know the circumstances surrounding the incident. We do know a number of weapons have been seized.
‘They include a gun, various knives, and a machete, apparently. The police clearly had to take action in order to try and arrest these individuals.’.

Luke Huseyin, 32, who lives in a block of flats on John Wilson Street, Woolwich, close to where the incident happened said he watched two men murder a man before being shot.He said: ‘I was at home and heard a big bang. I looked out of the window and saw a car had crashed.
‘It was a blue Vauxhall. Then two black guys got out of the car dragging a white guy across the road towards the wall. One of the guys had a knife that looked about a foot long and a machete and the other bloke had a gun.
‘They started slashing him up with the knife and hitting him in the stomach with the machete. I don’t think it took long before he was dead. There were people passing by who were screaming and running away. I’ve never seen anything like it.

Downing Street has called a meeting of the Government’s Cobra emergency committee after the incident in John Wilson Street, which David Cameron described as “truly shocking”.
Senior police officers are thought to believe the killing was a politically-motivated Islamist terrorist attack.
And video has emerged that appears to show one of two alleged attackers - with blood-stained hands and holding two bladed weapons - attempting to justify the attack.
“I apologise that women had to witness this today, but in our lands our women have to see the same,” he said.
Dozens of weapons - including a number of knives - and pools of blood could be seen on the ground, where a man said to be wearing a Help for Heroes T-shirt was attacked by two men.
Witnesses say the pair appeared to deliberately drive their car at the victim, before getting out with various bladed weapons and launching their attack.
Sky sources say that following their attack, as the victim lay motionless in the middle of the road, witnesses heard the pair chanting “Allahu akbar” - and asking passers-by to take photographs of them.
There are loads of witness interviews online for this ... and nearly every one says it took the police 20 minutes to arrive ... while hundreds of people watched the killers parade up and down the street.

There isn’t much, and thankfully only one casualty. I don’t count dead muzzies as casualties btw.
Man dead in suspected Woolwich terror attack
A man has died and two are injured after police responded to a reported machete attack in south-east London.
The government is reported to be treating the assault as a suspected terrorist incident and the prime minister said it was “truly shocking”.
Eyewitnesses said a man was brutally attacked in a Woolwich street by two men who were later shot by officers.
Local MP Nick Raynsford said the dead man was a soldier at Woolwich barracks but this has not been confirmed.
Home Secretary Theresa May has summoned a meeting of the government’s emergency response committee Cobra to assess the incident.
Mrs May said she had been briefed by the director general of Security Service MI5, Andrew Parker, and Metropolitan Police Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe on the “sickening and barbaric” attack.
“It has been confirmed to me that a man has been brutally murdered,” she said. “Two other men were shot by armed police and they are currently receiving treatment for their injuries.”

Whitehall sources have told the BBC it is “a fair supposition” that the incident was a terrorist incident but police have not commented publicly on the suggestion.
BBC political editor Nick Robinson said the police view is that the attack may have been filmed and footage may exist.
According to senior Whitehall sources the people carrying out the attack were heard to say Allahu Akbar [God is Great], said our political editor.
On Twitter, the Mayor of London Boris Johnson described the attack as a “sickening deluded and unforgivable act of violence”.
London Ambulance Service confirmed one man had been found dead at the scene.
It said two men had been taken to hospital, one in a serious condition.
One of the men was airlifted from the scene, and another was taken away by road ambulance

No, It Isn’t April Fool’s Day
Of course. Of course he’s a Saudi. Of course it was Detroit. Of course his nephew is a student at one of our universities. We just refuse to learn, don’t we? And so they continue to test us. Every year, every month, every week. Every day.
A Saudi man was arrested at Detroit Metropolitan Airport after federal agents said he lied about why he was traveling with a pressure cooker, according to a court documents filed Monday.
Two pressure cookers were used in last month’s Boston Marathon bombings.
Hussain Al Kwawahir was being held Monday in Detroit on allegations of using a passport with a missing page and lying to Customs and Border Protection agents.
A criminal complaint says Al Kwawahir arrived at the airport Saturday on a flight from Saudi Arabia via Amsterdam. The complaint says Al Kwawahir told agents he was visiting his nephew, who he said is a student at the University of Toledo in Ohio.
The complaint says Al Kwawahir originally said he brought the pressure cooker with him because pressure cookers aren’t sold in America, then later said his nephew had bought one but it “was cheap” and broke after one use. [yeah, gun powder will wreck them just like that]
Agents said they also noticed a page was missing from Al Kwawahir’s passport from Saudi Arabia. He told them he didn’t how it had been removed, and said the document had been locked in a box that only he, his wife, and three children have access to in his home, according to the complaint.
Al Kwawahir was read his Miranda rights, which he said he understood, and he invoked his right to remain silent, according to the complaint.
If you have a passport, take a look at it sometimes. For a little scrap of cardboard and paper, it is a very well made little thing. Pages do not fall out. Ever. Even the paper pages are made from quite robust stock and resist tearing.
You know he’ll play the Islam Card. You know he’ll backtrack and say he was confused, and lied because he panicked because of all the islamaphobia. And they’ll just send him home.
If I were running DHS, I’d be investigating the daylights out of nephew boy and all his associates, looking for excuses to bust him. Because I CAN learn.

I happen to see this letter to an editor of a paper today, and was immediately reminded how little things change. Although it had not occurred to me it started so long ago. Don’t know why. Just never thought about it and not as much got reported back in those pre computer days.
I am referring to the guys on our side, being killed by guys they trained. They trained them thinking they were allies. The place was Aden, Yemen. No surprise then is it?

Joanne Chesimard was part of the Black Liberation Army. She gunned down a NJ State Trooper in cold blood in 1973. In 1977 she was convicted and sent to prison at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility, then called Clinton Farms. That’s right across the highway from where I live. (I didn’t live here then). In 1979 the Weather Underground, a terrorist group run by Barack Obama’s friend, mentor, and godfather of his children, Bill Ayers, violently broke Chesimard out of that jail. She made her way to Cuba. Two years later Ayers and the Weather Underground pulled off the Brinks Robbery at Nanuet Mall in Nanuet NY (next door to where I then lived), and killed several people including two police officers in the robbery and the ensuing chase and shootout. Ayers escaped prosecution due to a procedural error. In his own words, he is “guilty as hell, free as a bird”. Ayers is currently a college professor, living with his wife Bernadine Dohrn, who was also part of the Weather Underground. Well, the Weatherman, which was a radical group that had grown from the earlier Marxist/Anarchist group Students For A Democratic Society (SDS). After having left the Weatherman, Dohrn worked in the law firm of Sidley Austin with Michelle Obama. Today the FBI added Chesimard to their Most Wanted List. What, she wasn’t on it before, back in the day??
On the 40th anniversary of the murder of State Trooper Werner Foester, the Federal Bureau of Investigation announced today, May 2, a $2 million reward for the capture and return from Cuba of 1960s revolutionary Joanne Chesimard.
Chesimard, who goes by the name Assata Shakur, was a member of the Black Panthers and Black Liberation Army revolutionary movement of the 1960s and 70s. She killed Foerster during a shootout on the New Jersey Turnpike in East Brunswick just after midnight on May 2, 1973. She was convicted of the murder in 1977 and sentenced to life plus 30 years for the crime.
In February 1979, Chesimard was serving the sentence at Clinton Farms (now Edna Mahan Correctional Institution), in Union Township when three armed men posing as visitors held up a corrections officer in the supposedly top-security South Hall, commandeered a prison van at gunpoint and escaped in cars waiting along Route 78.
Friend of Bill Ayers Added to FBI’s Most Wanted List
Nobody in the media will make the connection for you today, so we’ll helpfully oblige. It’s taken decades, but the FBI has finally gotten around to placing this cop-killing scumbag on the Most Wanted List.
Joanne Chesimard, now living in Cuba as a fugitive after murdering a New Jersey state trooper, will be placed on the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorist list — with the reward for her capture doubled — on Thursday, exactly 40 years after the death of Trooper Werner Foerster.
Some of New Jersey’s top lawmen will gather at the FBI’s headquarters in Newark to announce that Chesimard is being added to the FBI terrorist list, a law enforcement official said.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Aaron T. Ford, the new head of the FBI’s Newark Division, also is expected to announce that the reward for Chesimard’s capture is being doubled to $2 million, the official said.
Chesimard, a black militant who has been living under the name of Assata Shakur in Cuba for more than 25 years, was convicted in 1977 of killing Foerster during a gun battle on the New Jersey Turnpike in 1973. Three gunmen posing as visitors broke her out of the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women in Clinton in 1979. Chesimard eluded capture and resurfaced in the mid-1980s in Cuba, where she has since lived under the protection of the Castro regime.
Nice. And Obama wants to make nice-nice with Castro and his gang down Cuba way. Gee, I’m so thrilled.

The Net Widens
(CNN)—Two classmates of Boston Marathon bomb suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and a third person face federal charges in connection with the April 15 attack, federal law enforcement sources said Wednesday.
Boston police announced the arrests Wednesday morning, adding that there was “no threat to the public.” They were expected to appear before a federal judge Wednesday afternoon, U.S. government sources said.
The classmates—Azamat Tazhayakov and Dias Kadyrbayev—are both from Kazakhstan and had been in federal custody on immigration charges already, their lawyers told CNN. The third person arrested is a U.S. citizen.
The Kazakh students face charges of making false statements to investigators and conspiracy to obstruct justice, according to a federal law enforcement source with firsthand knowledge of the investigation.
All three are accused of removing items from Tsarnaev’s dorm room at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth after the bombings, a law enforcement official who has been briefed about the arrests said.
Law enforcement officials believe they helped destroy evidence that might further implicate Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in the bombing by disposing of fireworks and his laptop, a U.S. government official said.
Two U.S. government officials said the charges involve illegal actions after the bombing. One official said Dzhokhar Tsarnaev contacted the three after FBI agents released photographs of Tsarnaev and his older brother Tamerlan and asked them to dispose of the items. The suspects said they did not know the significance of what they were doing, the official told CNN.
Another federal law enforcement official said two of three lied to the FBI when asked about whether they had seen the suspects or knew of their whereabouts after the bombings.
That official said the suspects threw out backpacks of fireworks from the dorm room, leading to a two-day search of a New Bedford landfill last week.
Tazhayakov and Kadyrbayev appear in a photograph with Dzhokhar Tsarnaev taken in New York’s Times Square during an earlier visit. They were taken into custody last month on charges that they had violated the terms of their student visas and had already been questioned by investigators on April 19, hours before Tsarnaev’s arrest, Kadyrbayev attorney Robert Stahl told CNN.
Federal law enforcement sources said at the time that the Kazakh students were being detained “in an abundance of caution” because authorities wanted detailed information on the Tsarnaevs’ movements in the weeks and days before the attack.
The three people arrested were connected to Tsarnaev, 19, the surviving bomb suspect, at the university and allegedly helped him after the bombing, a different source told the Globe.
The Boston police Web page said that three additional “suspects” had been taken into custody. It emphasized that there was no threat to public safety.
Harlan J. Protass, a criminal lawyer from New York who is representing Tazhayakov, confirmed today that Tazhayakov and Kadyrbayev were taken into custody.

This terrifying collection of shotguns, knives and samurai swords was discovered in the boot of a car carrying six British jihadists who plotted to kill and maim hundreds of people.
A nail bomb packed with 458 pieces of shrapnel and parts for a pipe bomb were also found.
The gang had evaded the security services and their car was only searched after being impounded because the driver did not have insurance.
The terrorists plotted to detonate a bomb at an English Defence League rally, which would have caused hundreds of casualties, including police officers, bystanders and members of the far-Right protest group.
The terrorists now face lengthy jail sentences after admitting the plot – a protest against the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee – at Woolwich Crown Court yesterday.
The court heard that the men drove from Birmingham on June 30 last year to set off the bomb at the rally in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire.
However, the meeting had finished early and by the time they arrived everyone had dispersed.
On the way back, the gang’s Renault Laguna was stopped by a policeman in a random spot-check on the M1. He impounded the car after discovering it was uninsured.
It later emerged that one of the terrorists had tried to insure it, but entered the wrong registration number on an online form.
The car was taken to a pound near Sheffield where it sat for two days until a worker found the weapons and ten copies of a note addressed to the Queen, David Cameron and ‘the enemies of Islam’.

A series of coincidences saw the plan by Islamic fanatics to use bombs, guns and swords in a murderous attack on far-right extremists foiled.

PARIS — An escapee from a psychiatric institution slashed a rabbi and his son with a box-cutter on Tuesday, prompting witnesses to tackle and subdue the attacker after a chase through a Paris synagogue, officials said.
The rabbi, who is in his late 40s, was recovering from surgery for a neck injury and his 18-year-old son sustained lesser injuries in the attack north of a touristic shopping area near Paris’ gilded Opera Garnier, according to police and judicial officials and Richard Prasquier, who heads CRIF, France’s largest umbrella organization of Jewish groups.
The assailant was of Iranian origin, and an official investigation was underway to determine a possible motive, Prasquier said.
Agnes Thibault-Lecuivre, a spokeswoman for the Paris prosecutor’s office, said the two victims had been wearing Jewish skullcaps, and the attacker was detained after a chase through the synagogue. The Simon Wiesenthal Center, which monitors anti-Semitic incidents worldwide, said in a statement that the assailant screamed “Allah-u-Akbar” — or “God is great” — during the attack.
