Teacher loses it, school loses teacher

Ain’t No Minipsinatin Here!*

Teacher to student: You’ll get arrested for disrespectin President Obama, just like all them people that Bush arrested!
School Board to Teacher after story hits the news: Suspended!

NC teacher captured on video suggesting student could be arrested for Obama criticism

A North Carolina high school teacher was captured on video shouting at a student who questioned President Obama and suggesting he could be arrested for criticizing a sitting president.

The Salisbury Post, which first reported on the YouTube video, did not identify the teacher in question, who is reportedly on staff at North Rowan High School. The video does not show faces, but the heated argument in the classroom can clearly be heard.

“Do you realize that people were arrested for saying things bad about Bush?” the teacher said toward the end of the argument, telling the student, “you are not supposed to slander the president.”

The student told the teacher that one can’t be arrested “unless you threaten the president.”

The argument started when the classroom began discussing news reports that Mitt Romney bullied a fellow student when he was in high school.

It’s not a big story, but tough to just quote a few little parts. Follow the link and listen to the video. The teacher lost her mind when she felt the student was being critical of Teh Won. Student gets a national A+ in my opinion for the best line of the day:

“He’s just a man. Obama is no god,” the student said.

The nearly 10-minute video, shot by a student and uploaded to YouTube on Monday, had been viewed more than 1,000 times by Friday afternoon.

It begins with a classroom conversation about a recent news story detailing Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney allegedly bullying a classmate in prep school. It turns into a heated, sometimes confrontational debate.

One student asks, “Didn’t Obama bully someone though?”

The teacher responds: “Not to my knowledge.”

In response to the Romney story, conservatives have recently been pointing to a passage in Obama’s book, “Dreams from My Father,” in which the president writes that while in grade school he shoved a little girl, the only other black student in his grade, after other students called him her boyfriend.

When the student tells the teacher that Obama admitted to bullying a girl in school, the teacher goes on the defensive.

“Stop, no, because there is no comparison,” she says. Romney, she says, is “running for president. Obama is the president.”

When the student says they’re both “just men,” the teacher continues to argue that Romney, as a candidate for president, is not to be afforded the same respect as the president.

The teacher tells the class Obama is “due the respect that every other president is due.”

“Listen, let me tell you something, you will not disrespect the president of the United States in this classroom,” she says.

The student replies that he’ll say what he wants.

“Not about him you won’t,” the teacher says.

Later in the conversation, the teacher tells the class it’s criminal to slander a president.

“Do you realize that people were arrested for saying things bad about Bush?” she says of former President Bush. “Do you realize you are not supposed to slander the president?”

The student responds by saying being arrested for talking badly about the president would violate the right to free speech.

Now that this story is hitting the news, and the teacher’s lack of control and unusual views of the laws et al are in full public view ... um, hearing ... the school board had a bit of egg on their face and is looking for a washcloth ...

SALISBURY — Rowan-Salisbury Schools officials suspended a North Rowan High School teacher Monday while investigating an incident caught on camera where the teacher told a student he could be arrested for speaking ill of President Barack Obama.

In a nearly 10-minute YouTube video shot by a student in the classroom, Tanya Dixon-Neely, a social studies teacher, told students criticism of the president could lead to jail time.
...
Dixon-Neely has been suspended with pay, according to Rowan-Salisbury School System Spokeswoman Rita Foil.

And she’s a social studies teacher ... I think that passes for history these days? So, who were these people who were arrested or reprimanded for criticizing Bush? It certainly wasn’t anyone in Hollywood or the news media. Or those Code Pink people. Or Cindy Sheehan. And who taught this teacher her very broad definition of slander?

Yikes. Home schooling. Looks better every day.

Oh, and suspended with pay. So this is what, just a bit of smoke and mirrors until the press goes away?

Our Part Time pResident

Wish I had a part time job that paid this well and had the same level of benefits.

Our 4 Hour Leader

On May 7, Geoffrey Norman posted “Today’s Laugh Line” at National Review Online—a quote from a column by Mark Halperin in Time asserting Mitt Romney has “the luxury of an open schedule” allowing him to “spend every waking hour as a full-time candidate,” while President Obama “is required to do his day job.”

It was even funnier if one looked at President Obama’s May 7 schedule. Here was his schedule that day, in its entirety, with all events taking place in the Oval Office:

10:00 a.m.  The President receives the Presidential Daily Briefing.

11:00 a.m.  The President meets with senior advisors.

2:30 p.m.  The President holds a conference call with elected officials and student government leaders from across the country to discuss the need to prevent rates from doubling on July 1.

Yeah, well what did you expect? The guy didn’t work full time as a college lecturer. The guy didn’t work hardly at all as a lawyer. And community organizin’ ain’t exactly at Up At Dawn kind of effort neither.

Besides, a decent round of golf takes hours. As does planning for your next vacation.

Hey all you racists: lazy AND shiftless. Probably has his comfortable shoes too. Plus there’s this one.

Mr. Popular

It is rather getting pushed to the side, but the Democrats are also having a presidential primary. Sure, it’s pretty much a no-brainer, which suits them perfectly, but there are other people running for the nomination. And in some parts of the country, those nominees are doing quite well.

Anybody But Obama

Jailed felon wins 40% of West Virginia Dem Primary

CHARLESTON, West Virginia – Just how unpopular is President Barack Obama in some parts of the country? Enough that a man in prison in Texas is getting 4 out of 10 votes in West Virginia’s Democratic presidential primary.

The inmate, Keith Judd, is serving time at the Beaumont Federal Correctional Institution in Texas for making threats at the University of New Mexico in 1999. With 93 percent of precincts reporting, Obama was receiving just under 60 percent of the vote to Judd’s 40 percent.

For some West Virginia Democrats, simply running against Obama is enough to get Judd votes.

“I voted against Obama,” said Ronnie Brown, a 43-year-old electrician from Cross Lanes who called himself a conservative Democrat. “I don’t like him. He didn’t carry the state before and I’m not going to let him carry it again.”

I’m guessing that the folks in W. VA are still a mite bit sore over that whole “clinger” remark back in 2008. Plus the whole “bankrupt the coal industry” thing, which would put half their state out of work.

Voters in other conservative states showed their displeasure with Obama in Democratic primaries last March.

In Oklahoma, anti-abortion protester Randall Terry got 18 percent of the primary vote. A lawyer from Tennessee, John Wolfe, pulled nearly 18,000 votes in the Louisiana primary. In Alabama, 18 percent of Democratic voters chose “uncommitted” in the primary rather than vote for Obama. In Tuesday’s North Carolina primary, 21 percent of Democratic voters marked “no preference.”

Don’t you just love it? 1 in 5 Dem voters in NC went to the polls and voted “present”.

The latest state-by-state Gallup poll, released in January, found Obama with a 32.7 percent approval rating in West Virginia. The president had a lower approval rating only in Utah, Idaho, Oklahoma and Wyoming.

5 states or more where Obama polls at less than a third? Best news I’ve heard all morning. If only it was 30 states ...

I’m sure it’s just because of racism.

It’s almost creepy, but I like it

Once again Chris Muir’s Day By Day comic strip echoes something I said in yesterday’s post on Obama’s new Forward! slogan. This has happened a fair number of times before. Great minds thinking alike, or a call for Captain Obvious, or just another pure coincidence? I’m not sure, but I like the idea that my ideas are being picked up and spread around. Or that they occur to lots of other people. That makes me feel part of a bigger group and less extreme. More normal. Which is a nice feeling in today’s seriously left-leaning world. Day By Day runs on the sidebar of a whole lot of VRWC blogs. You go Muir!

Godwin’s Law is one of those humorous Internet “rules” that we see all the time. It says that in any debate, the person who first calls the other one a Nazi loses (or generally drags the Nazis into the debate). But the law only applies when the analogy is false. In this case, the steps from the Red rallying cry Forward! to the gates of the camps are not that many, and in a straight line. More so, given that we all saw that video a couple of years back where some guy who had snuck into the Weather Underground inner sanctum of Obama’s friend, neighbor, and ghost writer Bill Ayers, and related Ayers’ plans for re-education/elimination camps for huge swaths of the population. And that kind of plan is Nazism of the highest order.

“Arbeit Macht Frei” is a wonderful phrase in it’s original context, because Work really does Set You Free. Free from want, free from poverty. Free from powerless serfdom. And from there, via the opportunity for education that comes with a level of success greater than bare existence, eventually free from the dull-witted world of animals and into the enlightened world of civilized humanity. But of all the cliches co-opted and corrupted by the Left - and the Nazis were an extremely Left Wing bunch, regardless of what today’s Leftists would have you believe (Nazism is only Right Wing if your concept of “center” is totalitarian communism) - that it has pretty much become the Ultimate Lie. Not because the phrase itself is wrong. Because these words were hung over the main gates of the Nazi death camps in WWII.

the gates of Dachau

When you wave the Red Banner and take as your own the slogans of tyranny and urge the people Forward! on the road to “Progress” ... that road leads to Hell ... and the camps are just a few semantic steps along the way.  Granted that Muir is commenting on an utterly unconstitutional bill of Harry Reid’s that passed in the Senate the other day, wherein people who are behind in their taxes will have their passports revoked - without due process - and thus not be allowed to leave the country. You don’t introduce such a bill unless your ideology is already so far left that it’s over the “normal” American horizon. And instead of being laughed at, mocked, and deservedly tarred and feathered, the rest of the Senate supports you and passes the bill more than just along party lines ... proof that the ideology is rampant in that chamber of our government. Godwin’s Law does not apply here. The Nazi allusion is correct.

We need more than a new McCarthy. We need a purge. We need a new government. Top down.

The Commie Comes Out

Forward!

New Obama campaign slogan is direct borrow from Euro Commie movements of the past.

As is, of course, the “Progressive” label, long used as cover term for commie/fascist/socialist groups.

Americans are so stupid, so dim, so ignorant of history that they’re not even bothering to try to pretend any more.

The Obama campaign apparently didn’t look backwards into history when selecting its new campaign slogan, “Forward” — a word with a long and rich association with European Marxism. [ want to bet? they damn well did. they’re just so stunningly arrogant that you can’t accept it. ]

Many Communist and radical publications and entities throughout the 19th and 20th centuries had the name “Forward!” or its foreign cognates. Wikipedia has an entire section called “Forward (generic name of socialist publications).”

“The name Forward carries a special meaning in socialist political terminology. It has been frequently used as a name for socialist, communist and other left-wing newspapers and publications,” the online encyclopedia explains.

The slogan “Forward!” reflected the conviction of European Marxists and radicals that their movements reflected the march of history, which would move forward past capitalism and into socialism and communism.

Vladimir Lenin founded the publication “Vpered” (the Russian word for “forward") in 1905. Soviet propaganda film-maker Dziga Vertov made a documentary whose title is sometimes translated as “Forward, Soviet” (though also and more literally as “Stride, Soviet").

Conservative critics of the Obama administration have noted numerous ties to radicalism and socialists throughout Mr. Obama’s history, from his first political campaign being launched from the living room of two former Weather Underground members, to appointing as green jobs czar Van Jones, a self-described communist.

And when, or even if, this blows up in his face, the media will claim it was a complete misunderstanding that never meant any of that evil Red Scare stuff ever never not once. And it will get swept under the bus and ignored. But it does mean what it means, and anyone with a lick of sense can see that. What’s next, a slogan to show the poor folks that they can Move On and push Forward! off of welfare by their own hard efforts and thereby find economic independence? “Work Makes You Free!” (aka ”Arbeit Macht Frei”). No negative connotations or connections to history there either. I’m sure his legions of hard working but befuddled Jewish supporters will rally to that one.

One thing I can say about Obama: from his 2008 rally with it’s fake Olympian columns, to his Office of the President Elect complete with it’s own seal, to this slogan, and more; the man’s audacity is greater than any Caeser that ever lived. Forget four parts; Obama has enough gall to be divided into twelve.

And most of the population doesn’t have a freakin’ clue.

PS - it is no coincidence AT ALL that the media, who in their political coverage used to swap red and blue every other election to denote states won by Republicans or Democrats, settled some years ago for red for the Republicans. Just to muddy the waters that extra little bit, to lessen the long appropriate association between the Pinko Party and that similar but bolder color.

Here We Go Again

President Janus

The biggest spending, biggest borrowing president in history doing another about face and complaining about deficits. And blaming everyone else of course. Janus, the two faced god.

Holy cats, the audacity of this pretender is just off the meter.

And for the millionth time, he’s using the media to try and scare the public again, and you know what that means: smoke and mirrors; he’s got something sneaky behind his back he’s going to try to push through when the attention is elsewhere.

As the clock ticks on raising the nation’s debt ceiling, President Obama said Tuesday he cannot guarantee that retirees will receive their Social Security checks August 3 if Democrats and Republicans do not come together and reach an agreement to reduce the deficit.

In an interview with CBS’s Scott Pelley, Obama talked about the repercussions of not getting a deal by the August 2nd deadline. “I cannot guarantee that those checks go out on August 3rd, if we haven’t resolved this issue. Because there may simply not be the money in the coffers to do it.”

The Treasury Department has warned that if Congress fails to raise the nation’s $14.29 trillion debt ceiling by Aug. 2, the US will default on its debt for the first time in its history.

The White House says it’s pretty clear the effect will be significant and would entail a “Sophie’s Choice situation, where you have to decide what bills you can pay.” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said “We can’t guarantee if there were a default any specific bill will be paid...That’s why the leaders have been clear that we will vote to have the United States fulfill its obligations. And the president feels strongly that that will happen.”

But as Democrats and Republicans turn up the heat against each other, the terms of a big deal appear to be further out of reach.

Carney suggested Congress is to blame for pushing these things up to the very last minute. Comparing the current stalemate to the Continuing Resolution debate which dragged on for months, Carney said this situation is even more inconvenient because if Congress does not act in time, it “could have an effect on markets that...would be damaging to the economy.”

Didn’t the assclown in chief just play this trump a few months ago? Got the media all whipped up, got the old folks all scared (you would think they would be used to it by now, what with the evil Republicans always trying to kill them, starve them, and throw them out in the snow with their evil plans), got everyone riled up for a couple days ... until the Social Security guy came out and said how this was total nonsense, it’s not the President’s job to make such guarantees in the first place, and that the money would continue to flow even if other parts of the government had to shut down for a bit. I guess DC figures that all the seniors have been seriously whacked with Al’s Hammers, and have no recent memory ability. WTF, we know the MSM doesn’t. Not for him. But that’s deliberate.

simply un-obama-lievable

Obama trying to strong arm “unelected” Supreme Court?

I think this is another one of those situations where the mask slips, and the true Barry Soetoro peeks out. I don’t even know where to begin on this one. Stupid? Uneducated? Villainous? Egocentric narcissistic tyranny? A fundamentally flawed concept of what America is all about and how it works? All of that, and more. Let’s add in a total disrespect for our time honored system of government, the basest of political pandering, and yet another attempt to spread a meme that is so far beyond wrong that you’d be almost unable to believe that an actual American citizen would even be able to form the thought in his mind. Unreal. And this clueless thug is in charge.

Obama warns ‘unelected’ Supreme Court against striking down health law

President Obama, employing his strongest language to date on the Supreme Court review of the federal health care overhaul, cautioned the court Monday against overturning the law—while repeatedly saying he’s “confident” it will be upheld.

The president spoke at length about the case at a joint press conference with the leaders of Mexico and Canada. The president, adopting what he described as the language of conservatives who fret about judicial activism, questioned how an “unelected group of people” could overturn a law approved by Congress.

Horry clap, what a maroon. I guess all that Constitutional Study this guy did never included the phrase “Checks and Balances”? You know, that basic, simple core principal which is just about the very thing we teach small children about how the system works?

“I’m confident that the Supreme Court will not take what would be an unprecedented, extraordinary step of overturning a law that was passed by a strong majority of a democratically elected Congress,” Obama said.

Wow. He just oozes contemptuous stupid from every single pore. Don’t you just love how he implies that shooting down his ramrodded law, crammed down the throats of the American public against our wishes and without our votes, would be tyrannical? Oh, and I’ll get to the “democratically elected” part in the next post, since YET AGAIN it’s turned up that the Dems have been caught red handed rigging the ballots back in 2008.

Unelected judges overturning a law passed by an elected legislature ... gosh, that’s just so wrong. Um, wait. Um, no. Asshat. That’s what the damn Supreme Court is FOR. It’s what their job is. Now, then, and since forever. Did this Indonesian pretender even attend one of these law classes? Did he pass any of the exams, or just mark them “present”? My head is spinning. What nerve. What blatant stupidity. What a douche.

The Supreme Court spent three days hearing arguments last week in four separate challenges to the health care law, which stands as the president’s signature domestic policy accomplishment. A central challenge was over the individual mandate—the requirement that Americans buy health insurance. Critics say the mandate is unconstitutional, and that the federal government cannot force people into the insurance marketplace.

Obama on Monday said that without such a mandate, the law would not have a mechanism to ensure those with preexisting conditions get health care.

“I’m confident that this will be upheld because it should be upheld,” Obama said, describing the law as “constitutional.”

Republican lawmakers slammed the president for his Supreme Court comments. Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, accused the president of misrepresenting the implications of a ruling against the law.

“It must be nice living in a fantasy world where every law you like is constitutional and every Supreme Court decision you don’t is ‘activist,’” he said in a statement. “Many of us have been arguing for nearly three years that the federal government does not have the power to dictate individuals’ purchasing decisions. After a national debate on the subject, more than two-thirds of Americans agree that the Obamacare insurance mandate is unconstitutional.”

Nice word Senator Hatch, but like Ron Paul said of Newt Gingrich, you haven’t gone far enough. The entire mandate is based on an extraordinary bending of the already overly bent reed called “the power to regulate interstate commerce”. And the ENTIRE problem of unchecked, unlimited, overbearing federal government is based on that one single decision back in 1937 when Obama’s predecessor, his mentor, his role model, and the other Communist president, FDR, strong armed the Supreme Court by threatening to pack it with another half dozen justices that would toady to him. Because they were old, and thus slow witted, so he was going to help them. Seriously, that was FDR’s publicly stated reasoning. And two justices capitulated, and it’s been downhill ever since. All that “regulate interstate commerce” ever meant was to normalize it. To keep it tuned, and running evenly. Like a clock. Regulated.  Look it up, Mr. Scholar. Read the words of the founding fathers, The Federalist Papers, and the Congressional Minutes up to that point in time.

But no. To Obama, this law is constitutional because he says it is. And any decision other than that ... well, let’s see how that Joe The Plumber tar brush works on Scalia. Or we could try to Palinize Roberts. Hey, let’s get Spike Lee to Tweet Kennedy’s home address and the NBPP to put a bounty out on him.

My head is swimming over this one. What a snake in the grass. What a panderer. What a fundamentally flawed view of America. Not understanding or respect whatsoever. Damn, what an uneducated foreigner this incompetent pretender is.

PS - Notice that a certain Ivory Tower justice has NOT recused herself from sitting in judgment on legislation that she had a significant hand in creating. Solicitor General at the time, no? Ethics much? ¡Cállate, no es nada!

But where are the latest poll numbers?

Worst Week Evah For SCOAMF In Chief

Gosh, when even the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Times say it’s bad for the Big O, it must be.

WSJ:

What is happening is that the president is coming across more and more as a trimmer, as an operator who’s not operating in good faith. This is hardening positions and leading to increased political bitterness. And it’s his fault, too. As an increase in polarization is a bad thing, it’s a big fault.
...
From the day Mr. Obama was sworn in, what was on the mind of the American people was financial calamity—unemployment, declining home values, foreclosures. These issues came within a context of some overarching questions: Can America survive its spending, its taxing, its regulating, is America over, can we turn it around?

That’s what the American people were thinking about.

But the new president wasn’t thinking about that. All the books written about the creation of economic policy within his administration make clear the president and his aides didn’t know it was so bad, didn’t understand the depth of the crisis, didn’t have a sense of how long it would last. They didn’t have their mind on what the American people had their mind on.

The president had his mind on health care. And, to be fair-minded, health care was part of the economic story. But only a part! And not the most urgent part. Not the most frightening, distressing, immediate part. Not the “Is America over?” part.

Just in case you have forgotten, the Health Care Mandate - It’s Not A Tax™ was all that Obama did for the first year and a half of his occupancy. He gave speeches about it just about every single day. He couldn’t be bothered to talk to the generals who were running the wars he inhereted. He didn’t do anything else. Other than funnel money to his buddies through false “green” development plans. And play golf. And take vacations. But in terms of his actual work, it was all about the Obamacare. So when the Supremes shoot it down, as the audio from the hearing the other day seems to show will happen - his lawyers pretty much got laughed right out of the Court - the American people MIGHT just wake up (or, in a major wet dream the GOP could take the initiative and remind them. Fat chance of that, that would be fighting back and campaigning!) and realize that 3/8s of this guy’s time in office was a total waste of effort, and was entirely foreseeable by anyone, especially someone the media told us about a million times was this vaunted Constitutional Scholar.

WaTimes goes further and makes a list:

The past seven brutal days will go down as one of the worst weeks in history for a sitting president. It certainly has been, without any doubt, the worst week yet for President Obama.

Somehow, Mr. Obama managed to embarrass himself abroad, humiliate himself here at home, see his credentials for being elected so severely undermined that it raises startling questions about whether he should have been elected in the first place — let alone be re-elected later this year.

• Meanwhile, back at home, the Supreme Court took up the single most important achievement of Mr. Obama’s presidency and, boy, was it embarrassing. The great constitutional law professor, it turns out, may not quite be the wizard he told us he was.

By most accounts, Mr. Obama and his stuttering lawyers were all but laughed out of the courthouse. They were even stumbling over softball questions lobbed by Mr. Obama’s own hand-picked justices.

t was as if you lumped Hurricane Katrina and the Abu Ghraib abuses into one week for George W. Bush. And added on top of that the time he oddly groped German Chancellor Angela Merkel and got caught cursing on a hot mic. Even then, it wouldn’t be as bad as Mr. Obama’s week. You would probably also have to toss in the time Mr. Bush’s father threw up into the lap of Japan’s prime minister. Only then might we be approaching how bad a week it was for Mr. Obama.

Not that you will see any trace of embarrassment in the face of Mr. Obama. He has mastered the high political art of shamelessness, wearing it smugly and cockily. Kind of like a hoodie.

Sell Out In Waiting

Crivens. This sommnabatch Manchurian Candidate bastidge has a PLAN. He isn’t incompetent, it’s all done on purpose. And he’s got such a long To Do list to break down America that the tasks are scheduled up in a queue. And the smarmy rat has the cojones to talk about that in public. Or at least in front of the press, because no matter what Chairman Zero says, the MSMinistry of Information will spin it, hide it, polish it, and tell us forever how wonderful it is.

Obama To Russia, on Missile Talks: Oh, don’t worry, after I win the election I’ll be able to be more flexible

He’s going to sell us out. It’s part of his plan. He pretty much admitted he’s only talking tough for the campaign sound bites.

Son of a moldy dog biscuit.

President Obama assured Russian President Dmitry Medvedev Monday that he’d have “more flexibility” after the November election, during a conversation that appeared to focus on the touchy issue of missile defense.

Obama, during a sit-down with Medvedev in Seoul, urged Moscow to give him “space” until after November. The conversation was relayed by a TV pool producer who listened to the recording from a Russian journalist.

“This is my last election. After my election, I have more flexibility,” Obama told Medvedev.

Obama appeared to be asking Medvedev to relay this point to Vladimir Putin, who recently won election to return to the Russian presidency.

“On all these issues, but particularly missile defense ... this can be solved but it’s important for him to give me space,” Obama said.

Medvedev told the president he understood the “message about space. Space for you ...”

After Obama noted he’d have more flexibility in the future, Medvedev told him: “I understand. I will transmit this information to Vladimir.”

And let the spin begin!

The White House, though, downplayed the conversation between Obama and Medvedev.

President Barack Obama will send a memo to federal agencies on Thursday directing them to prioritize permitting for TransCanada’s southern leg of the Keystone oil pipeline, a senior White House official said on Wednesday.

Facing a barrage of Republican criticism over high gasoline prices during the election year, Obama will visit Cushing, Oklahoma, on Thursday to promote his energy policies, which include support for the southern leg of the pipeline.

The pipeline would drain a glut of crude in Cushing, the storage hub for U.S. crude oil traded on the futures market, easing deliveries to refineries along the Gulf Coast.

“More oil is flowing into Cushing than can flow out, creating a bottleneck that takes away the incentive for additional production, while also preventing oil from reaching refineries along the Gulf coast,” the senior official told reporters in a conference call.

And naturally, once the lower part of the pipeline is built and the glut is drained, then the pipes sit empty and this becomes another huge government boondoggle. Awesome plan Barry. Awesome.

PS - his “help” on this is close to non-existent anyway: no approval from His Oneness is needed, although a “get it done” memo from the boss tells you more than you want to know about bureaucratic heel dragging.

An oil-state Republican says when President Barack Obama stands in Cushing, Okla. on Thursday to announce that he is expediting the permit process for the southern section of the Keystone XL pipeline, he’ll pulling a fast one on Americans:

“The problem is, we don’t need any presidential approval for that (the southern section of pipeline),” said Rep. John Sullivan (R-Okla.). “It doesn’t cross any international lines,” Sullivan told Fox & Friends on Thursday.

The Oklahoma-to-Texas section of the pipeline requires permits from the states, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Sullivan said – “and it’s going to happen in spite of the president,” he added.

“And I think this is nothing more than a con job. Oklahomans don’t appreciate very much this photo opportunity that he’s doing. And I don’t believe the American people are going to believe in this con job, either.”

Maybe the best energy investment the government could make would be to take a couple billion from his crony’s phony green start-ups and build a new, large, generic oil refinery. Perhaps in Cushing OK. Run it with spare experts from all the oil companies, and use it as a training center for new petro-engineer graduates, and supply generic diesel / heating oil / jet fuel (they’re all very similar mixes) all year long. Sell that to the oil companies at cost, perhaps with some 20 year buy-in plan so that in a generation the refinery becomes a shared privatized endeavor. Whatever. But it would take a whole lot of pressure off the other refineries, and bring down the cost of industrial energy (trains, planes, ships, heating factories and homes) significantly. And as part of the big picture, an increased national refining capacity would mitigate seasonal price spikes. Well, that assumes that the other refineries we have actually stay open. That is not always the case:

2/27/12: The U.S. Energy Department on Monday said fuel markets in the Northeast “could be significantly impacted” if Sunoco closes its Philadelphia refinery in June, leading to tight supplies and price spikes is some areas. The report by the U.S. Energy Information Administration said that supplies of ultra-low sulfur diesel would be most affected by refinery shutdowns and transportation constraints.

“If the Sunoco Philadelphia refinery closes, price impacts are highly uncertain,” said the report. “If areas cannot be adequately supplied in the short term, prices can spike.”
...
Markets have been able to accommodate the closure of the ConocoPhillips refinery in Trainer closed in September and Sunoco’s Marcus Hook refinery shut down in December, the Energy Department said, partly offset by the startup of a Delaware City refinery in October after a two-year hiatus during a change of ownership. But the potential loss of the Sunoco Philadelphia refinery “presents a complex supply challenge, and no single solution has been identified by industry participants that will address all of the logistical hurdles that must be overcome.”

Pittsburgh and western New York state, which now are supplied through pipelines from the Philadelphia refineries, would most likely suffer dearly if supplies of diesel and heating oil were constrained.  Sunoco, which has its headquarters in Philadelphia, announced last year that it would shut down its 335,000-barrel per day refinery in the city if it is unable to find a buyer by June. The plant along the Schuylkill River represents 24 percent of the refining capacity in the Northeast.
...
Sunoco said it has lost nearly $1 billion in three years on refining and is committed to exiting manufacturing and focusing its business on retail marketing and logistics. If the Sunoco Philadelphia refinery shuts down in July, suppliers may need to find 240,000 barrels a day of gasoline and 180,000 barrels of ultra-low sulfur diesel by 2013.
...
ultra-low sulfur diesel, which is increasingly in demand to meet environmental regulations, presents a greater challenge because little is produced overseas. Local marketers would need to transport the fuel from Gulf Coast refineries. But pipeline capacity from the Gulf Coast is limited, as is the supply of U.S.-flagged vessels that would be needed to carry the fuel between U.S. ports.
...
The supply issue would be further complicated because New York state is requiring that heating oil - essentially the same thing as diesel - meet ultra-low sulfur levels in July. The Energy Department said New York’s heating oil requirement will effectively increase ultra-low diesel demand by 70,000 barrels a day. Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Vermont are scheduled to adopt ultra-low sulfur heating oil standards through 2018.

Refineries in the Northeast have supplied about 40 percent of the region’s gasoline, 60 percent of ultra-low sulfur diesel and 45 percent of the heating oil. Imports and deliveries from the Gulf Coast make up the rest.

With U.S. demand for fuel in decline, U.S. refiners say that they are losing money because of an oversupply of refining capacity and rushing to shut down unprofitable facilities.  In addition to the three refineries near Philadelphia that are currently on the market, Sunoco shut down its Eagle Point refinery in 2010. Sunoco is currently converting the Gloucester County plant to a fuel terminal. A huge refinery in the U.S. Virgin Islands, jointly owned by Hess Corp. and Petroleos de Venezuela, is also closing this month.

And that’s not all. Refineries in the islands and even down South America way are shutting down, idling, or running at partial capacity and taking a loss. Gosh, you’d think all that hopey-changey recovery would have brought demand back up by now. Nope.

Another Caribbean refinery able to run heavy, sour crude oil will cease operation.

Citing “unfavorable refinery economics and the outlook for continued unfavorable refinery economics,” Valero Energy Corp. said it will halt crude runs at month’s end of its 235,000 b/d facility in Aruba.

Valero’s move follows by 2 months the announcement by Hovensa LLC, a joint venture of Hess Corp. and Petroleos de Venezuela SA, of closure of the 350,000 b/d refinery at St. Croix, VI (OGJ Online, Jan. 18, 2012). Hovensa will operate the facility, capacity of which had been reduced from 500,000 b/d, as a terminal.

Now I am totally confused again. Gas prices are high because there is high oil demand, yet oil refineries are closing because there is low gas demand. An oil glut at the tank farm in Oklahoma is slowing down oil refining and thus kicking up the prices, but refining is slowing down anyway because prices are too high and nobody is driving or heating their homes (ie, demand is off). Huh? This reads like some chicken-egg-thing death spiral. Is it even remotely possible that Maxine Waters was right, and that energy should be nationalized? Perish the thought.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
