Police Brutality

OMG!! As a postman I’ve had to deal with dogs almost daily. That dog was not a threat. All you had to do was kneel down, coax the dog to you and pet him. If it was going to try to bite, I’d have pepper-sprayed it. But that was not a threatening dog. That was a dog excited about a new person.

Warning: Graphic of police shooting a non-threatening dog. Bet their mailman would back me.

Full story here

This is why mailmen aren’t armed. We find other, non-lethal, ways around your pet dogs. We make friends with them, or pepper-spray them if they are aggressive. If they are aggressive, you may have mail delivery curtailed. Shooting the dog should NOT have been the officer’s first choice. That dog was busy barking, not ready to bite.

tighten belts at home …. cut some benefits …. then give billions away to foreign govts.

I happen to see a brief news item this morning of further cost cutting by the government.  The man in charge of this says it will be necessary, on top of cuts made already, to steer the ship of state to safer economic waters.  That last bit being my words as that’s pretty much what he meant.  So apparently it will be necessary to cut the free TV License to old folks over 75.  Doesn’t bother me any, no TV anyway.  A couple of other suggested as possible cuts will be free bus fare for seniors over 65, and winter fuel refunds. (no, not your whole bill. It’s a partial kick back from govt. We got £200 for example. You don’t apply for it, you just get it.)

However …. while I can understand the government needs to tighten the national belt somewhat, what I do not understand is the huge sums spent overseas on aid to foreign governments.

Like this one for example.
And boy oh boy what an example this is.  It is not a new story, in fact it’s a few months old, but nevertheless says a lot about the fiscal insanity taking place.

Take a look.

£1billion of your cash is being used to help Nigeria join the space race

· Oil-rich country has accepted £300million in aid this year alone
· Plans for Nigerian astronauts to join missions within next two years
· But 70 per cent of the country live below the poverty line of £1.29 a day
· Row ignited by UKIP MEP Godfrey Bloom’s ‘Bongo Bongo land’ comments

By Jack Doyle, Home Affairs Correspondent
Daily Mail

Nigeria is spending millions to put a man into space – as Britain hands it more than £1billion in foreign aid.
The oil-rich country, which has accepted £300million this year alone, has set in train ambitious plans to launch its own rockets.
And the first Nigerian astronauts are being trained to join Russian, Chinese or American missions within the next two years.

Last night critics asked why Britain was, in effect, subsidising a space programme for a nation where 70 per cent of people live below the poverty line.

The £1.14billion Nigeria will receive over the five years of the Coalition is double the £500million set aside to prop up struggling accident and emergency departments at our own hospitals.
Backbench Tory MP Philip Davies said it was ‘totally unjustifiable and unaffordable’ for Britain to give this money to Nigeria, given the scale of its ‘grandiose’ space programme.
‘We cannot go around the world saying “don’t worry, we will feed your public for you while you waste your money on all sorts of other projects”,’ he said.

Your Tax Dollars At Work

I sometimes wish I had a category called Government Waste. It would be handy ...

Multi-Year Study:

Dogs Prefer To Poop On North-South Axis

A new study published in the journal Frontiers in Zoology finds that a wide range of canines preferred to “excrete with the body being aligned along the north-south axis” under “calm magnetic field conditions.” The nearly 37 breeds of dogs studied were found to completely avoid urination or defecation along an east-west direction.

The study is the first time that magnetic sensitivity was proven in dogs, although previous research has shown that many mammals “spontaneously align their body axis” with Earth’s magnetic field in a diverse range of behavioral contexts.

Examination of 70 dogs over two years – including 1,893 defecations and 5,582 urinations – revealed that dogs who were not leashed or influenced in movement were naturally inclined to relieve themselves in “axial orientation” with the earth’s magnetic field.

The study did not detail exactly why this phenomenon occurs: “It is still enigmatic why the dogs do align at all, whether they do it “consciously” (i.e., whether the magnetic field is sensorial perceived (the dogs “see”, “hear” or “smell” the compass direction or perceive it as a haptic stimulus) or whether its reception is controlled on the vegetative level (they “feel better/more comfortable or worse/less comfortable” in a certain direction).”

Although dogs are often influenced by their owner’s behavior to choose a spot of relief, the researchers note that the study was “truly blind,” and that observers were not biased in their choice of geomagnetic field variations.

Funny, we used to have a little dog that would go in almost any direction, as long as she could keep moving away from it as it happened. I can’t argue with her attitude; dog crap is pretty gross.

More Waste in Shitholitstan

Air Force Wastes HALF A BILLION (or lots more!) In Afghanistan

Buys Planes Nobody Wants, That Don’t Fly, No Parts, No Pilots

image

Why are we buying Afghanistan an air force? Even if it’s a transport force. If they want one, let them buy it. Besides, they’ll only use it to ship heroin and bomb each other.

Somehow I’m feeling a fuckup like this is no accident. What do you think, Yossarian?

Probe launched over $500M spent on Afghanistan planes now sitting idle

The U.S. military spent nearly a half-billion dollars on providing refurbished aircraft to the Afghan Air Force, only to abandon the contract and leave the planes collecting dust on airfields in Kabul and Germany.

With the planes potentially heading for the trash heap of the Afghanistan war, the chief military watchdog overseeing Afghanistan spending is launching a review into the terminated program.

“I’m very troubled with the fact we may have wasted a half-billion dollars on planes that don’t work, will never be flown and will probably be scrapped,” Special Inspector General John F. Sopko told FoxNews.com in a statement. “We intend to get to the bottom of this and hold people accountable.”

...

He recently reopened an investigation into a $34 million military facility in southwestern Afghanistan that he’s described as entirely unnecessary.

The story of the G222 aircraft program bares similar themes.

According to the inspector general’s office, the Defense Department in 2008 launched a program to give 20 G222s (C-27A)—military transport aircraft built in Italy—to the Afghans. The department contracted with Alenia Aermacchi North America.

But despite spending at least $486 million on the program, officials determined that those in charge did a poor job getting the spare parts needed to keep the planes working.

Further, a Pentagon watchdog reported that the planes flew only 234 of the 4,500 “required hours” between January and September of last year, and another $200 million potentially would be needed to buy the outstanding spare parts. Some of those parts were described as “unavailable.”

In December 2012, the Air Force ended the contract. Several months later, officials ended the program altogether and opted to go with an “alternate aircraft” in the long term.

Funny that the Air Force would do such a thing. They themselves flew this plan in South America in the 90s, doing drug interdiction and aid delivery, and then dumped the plane because of maintenance and parts availability issues. So it seems pretty odd they’d get behind a plan to spend tons of money to buy these dogs for somebody else, just 8 years after their own decade long negative experience ended.

The C-27a/G222 was originally a contender for the Air Force’s push to replace the smaller, slower C-7 Caribou of the Vietnam era with something that could fly twice as fast with twice the cargo, yet fit the same physical footprint and use the same short, rough, back country runways.  No surprise: most of the specs could be met, but they couldn’t fly STOL with a plane of double the mass and the same wing size. So, FAIL. But it was a decent little airplane under regular circumstances, so I guess a bunch got bought anyway.

Also, it’s a bit interesting that a probe is being opened now: the program started up in 2007 or earlier, $348 million was spent back in 2008, 5 years ago, to buy the planes. When the program was canceled back in January it appeared that a dozen planes had been reconfigured and sent to Afghanistan, including 2 rigged up as VIP craft (gotta spoil the tinpot dictators, right?), when the Air Force only had requirements for 6. Of course, that same article says $600 million had been spent (nearly a year ago), $114 million more than this new investigation is looking at, yet even then, another $60 million was needed to keep things running smoothly.

Around $600 million has now been spent on the program, and the industry official believes that spending another $60 million would ensure the type’s continued operation. This would cost less than introducing a new type such as the C-130, according to the industry official, who says such a move would require the retraining of personnel on a more complex system.
...
The NATO Training Mission and the Air Force will suspend C-27A flight operations in Afghanistan in the coming weeks, but no decision has been made on the final disposition of the aircraft and the associated support equipment and spare parts.

Let’s just pour out a billion to give a cargo air force to a bunch of primitive nomad dope smugglers. Or 3/4 billion. Whatever. Who cares? It’s only taxpayer’s money. It’s not like the military or the administration is accountable, no matter who is at the helm.

Get The Lead Out

And Then There Were None

Last Lead Smelter In USA To Close Down

EPA Regs Too Costly To Comply With

Repercussions Destroy Local Community

Anything using lead (like bullets) now subject to import/export rules

There. That tells the whole story in the headlines I think. Nice and fast.

[October 2010] Herculaneum Missouri - Doe Run Co. will close its lead smelter in Herculaneum in three years and will pay $65 million to correct violations of environmental laws at 10 of its lead processing facilities in southeast Missouri, the company and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Friday.

Environmentalists, who have called attention to the dangers of lead poisoning, heralded the news while local officials worried what the future holds for Herculaneum, the Jefferson County town that has relied on the smelter for jobs and tax money for more than 100 years.

The company said it will end operations at the lead smelter, the only primary lead smelter in the United States, by Dec. 31, 2013.
...
Doe Run must establish financial assurance trust funds, at an estimated cost of $28 million to $33 million, for the cleanup of Herculaneum and other active or former mining and milling facilities, the EPA said.

In addition, the company must pay a $7 million civil penalty for violating a series of environmental laws. Doe Run said half of that will go to schools in Iron, Reynolds, Jefferson and Washington counties.
...
270 people work at the Herculaneum plant, many of whom could retain jobs if the new plant goes there. If it doesn’t, Pyatt said, only a few employees will remain to carry out duties such as supervising remediation in Herculaneum.

Pyatt said local officials have been lobbying hard to keep the company in Herculanuem.

“They really want to keep the jobs and the tax base there,” Pyatt said.  It’s not surprising — the plant paid $933,000 last year in property taxes.

So the evil polluting smelter, that’s been there since teh end of the Civil War, employs the whole town and pays most of the taxes, has to be punished and driven out of business. Gee, I wonder what happened next?

[2012] For 25 years, the smelter didn’t meet federal air standards for lead, and now, after decades of battling government regulators and angry parents, Doe Run is leaving town at the end of next year.

The battles over contamination turned this town on its head, pitting neighbor against neighbor, uprooting and bulldozing the center of town. It all culminated in a storm of lawsuits: one of them—against the Environmental Protection Agency -- forced the federal government to revise the national air pollution standard for lead, tightening it by a factor of ten.

Now, unable to meet the tough new standard, Doe Run is finally closing the plant: the last primary lead smelter in the United States will be dismantled at the end of next year. In June, Doe Run made it final – the company won’t be rebuilding in Herculaneum with a new cleaner plant, as they had earlier planned on. That would be “an unacceptable financial risk.”

So the town, it’s greedy lawyers, and the corruptocrat bastards at the EPA put the screws to Doe Run so bad that they said to hell with it, and shut things down. And don’t you just bloody LOVE how the company’s suit against the government’s singling them out for persecution FORCED the EPA to make the lead pollution rules TEN TIMES more onerous? Forced them! Twisted their arms to make them come up with new regs impossible for anyone to comply with. Rather similar to Obama and his quest to kill the coal industry.

And now? Well ... the laws of unintended consequences being what they are ...

About 145 employees of the Doe Run lead smelter have learned they will lose their jobs at the end of December because of the plant’s closure, the Doe Run Co. said Wednesday. An additional 73 contractor jobs also will be eliminated.

The EPA says the company decided to close its plant instead of installing pollution control technologies.

City Administrator Jim Kasten said Friday he was worried about potential job losses and the crushing financial blow, especially to the school district, that the company’s departure would cause.

“This is a big deal, and how we’re going to counteract these things, I don’t know at this point,” he said.

Doe Run contributes 11 percent of the local revenue for the Dunklin School District, which includes Herculaneum, said Superintendent Stan Stratton.

The loss of that income would “force a heavier burden on our taxpayers,” Stratton said. The district’s annual budget, including state and federal money, is about $13 million.

The effects go further. Doe Run uses about half the water the city contracts to buy. Kasten estimated that when smelting stops, the average household’s water bill would increase by $30 to $40 a month.

“If Doe Run’s not buying it, someone’s got to,” Kasten said.

So the town will soon be pretty much out of business, with a whole domino cascade of missing taxes and absent money spreading the poverty far and wide. But those empty homes and businesses will have less pollution!

And as for sportsmen ... hunters and shooters ... not to mention any business in the nation that uses solder in its electronics ... or X-ray shielding ... or anything lead has always been used for ... possibly a national security issue (and now we know why DHS bought up all those billions of rounds! And why the military came up with “green” bullets with tungsten cores, because reducing pollution in the middle of a war is so so important, right??) ...

Doe Run made significant efforts to reduce lead emissions from the smelter, but in 2008 the federal Environmental Protection Agency issued new National Ambient Air Quality Standards for lead that were 10 times tighter than the previous standard. Given the new lead air quality standard, Doe Run made the decision to close the Herculaneum smelter.

Whatever the EPA’s motivation when creating the new lead air quality standard, increasingly restrictive regulation of lead is likely to affect the production and cost of traditional ammunition. Just this month, California Governor Jerry Brown signed into law a bill that will ban lead ammunition for all hunting in California. The Center for Biological Diversity has tried multiple times to get similar regulations at the federal level by trying, and repeatedly failing, to get the EPA to regulate conventional ammunition under the Toxic Substances Control Act.

At this time, it’s unclear if Doe Run or another company will open a new lead smelter in the United States that can meet the more stringent lead air quality standards by using more modern smelting methods. What is clear is that after the Herculaneum smelter closes its doors in December, entirely domestic manufacture of conventional ammunition, from raw ore to finished cartridge, will be impossible.

I Doubt This Is A Ruse

IRS Shells Out An EXTRA $4,200,000,000

To Illegal Aliens In USA

While harrying and stalling tea party groups seeking nonprofit status, the Internal Revenue Service mailed $4.2 billion in child-credit checks to undocumented immigrants.

Critics say midlevel IRS bureaucrats continue to abuse the Additional Child Tax Credit program by dispensing $1,000 checks to families in this country illegally.

“The law needs clarification that undocumented immigrants are not eligible,” Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, told Watchdog.org in a statement.

To make Congress’ intent clear – that only legal U.S. residents are entitled to ACTC credits — Grassley co-sponsored a clarifying amendment with Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wy.

“Unfortunately, the majority leader (Harry Reid, D-Nev.) cut off debate, so we weren’t given the chance to offer our amendment,” said Grassley, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The IRS’ practice of paying out billions to undocumented-immigrant families never received full congressional scrutiny, said David North, a fellow at the enforcement-oriented Center for Immigration Studies.

“I’ve been in government and I know kind of how these things work out,” North told the Washington Times.

“It struck me that (GS) 15s and 16s got together at some point and decided this is how we should handle it, and it stuck,” said North, who wrote “Paying Illegals to Stay,” an analysis of how benefit programs increase illegal immigration.

The IRS has said it doesn’t believe the ACTC law allows the agency to deny payment to undocumented immigrants.

First of all, who the hell does the IRS think it is, choosing to have their own understanding of the law? The law is what is written, and is executed as Congress says it shall be. If (and that’s a big IF) it says this is only for citizens, then IMO every IRS agent who allowed one of these checks to go out is personally responsible to the government for that money. Personally. Responsible. Pay up amigos. You, and every manager above you up to the big shots who made this decision. Then you’re fired.

Second, illegal aliens you craven suck-putz. Not undocumented immigrants. Yes, in the broadest terms they are immigrants in that they have come here. But the term implies some tacit permission, which they do. not. have. Thus, and always, they are ILLEGAL ALIENS.

But why am I hoping it’s a ruse?  Because 4.2 billion, a thousand bucks at a go, is 4.2 million. Given how them there illegals love to pair up and breed, and breed and breed and breed, this means that the IRS now unequivocally now has the address for at least 12.6 million illegals. Probably 15 million. And fraudulently filing a tax return is a felony. And a felony is a deportable offense.  And we know where they are. Trial? 10 seconds: we have the forms, we have the bank record that you cashed the check. Guilty. Gotcha.  Round ‘em up, move ‘em out, rawhide.

Drewtopia is sneaky that way, which is why my dream country doesn’t have an illegal alien problem.

But I doubt the US government is that slick. Or that they even want the illegals, our new slave class, to be gone. Um, no.

Crap.

And now, the backfire begins

Who Needs These Government Workers Anyway?

Nobody. The federal government has been a bloated puss-pig of a jobs program for special people for ages, and now that the feds are stamping their tiny little jackbooted feet, we’re beginning to see just how little many of those agencies and their employees contribute. Zilch. Buh-bye!!

Fiscal hawks say the silver lining to the partial government shutdown, which is entering its second week of scaled-back services, could be the picture of government waste it paints for taxpayers.

A look through the shutdown contingency plans of the federal government shows some little-known commissions and agencies—like the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts and the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness—don’t have anybody reporting for work during the partial shutdown.

The ability of the government to run without any of the people from any of these agencies on the clock is prompting some watchdog groups to question why, then, do the agencies need to exist in the first place?

“Think of all the money we could save as a nation,” Judicial Watch said in an Oct. 7 post.  “Besides bringing attention to these largely unheard of agencies, the shutdown – caused by Congress’s inability to agree on a funding bill – is also shedding light on just how bloated the federal government is, with an astounding workforce that’s seen nearly 800,000 furloughed this week.”

Snip snip. Cut cut. Chop chop. As any “kitchen table economist” can tell you, one way to balance the budget is to spend less. Lots less. I think it’s high time we trimmed a million worthless workers from the federal government, and while we’re at it, lets trim another million more from the state governments. The never-ending free ride to Candyland is over, thank you very much. The rest of us can get by just fine without them.

You Bastards

I missed this one. Sorry. That snide little twat in the Oval Office and his treasonous Secretary of State have sold us out. Impeach them. Please, somebody wake the hell up and impeach them.
Second Amendment folks always say “which part of ‘shall not be infringed’ don’t you understand”. Well ...

This part of “shall not be infringed”

Kerry Signs UN Small Arms Treaty

image

that grinning commie son of a bitch and his running dog traitor henchman

[9/25/13] Kerry signs UN arms treaty, senators threaten to block it

Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday signed a controversial U.N. treaty on arms regulation, riling U.S. lawmakers who vow the Senate will not ratify the agreement.  As he signed the document, Kerry called the treaty a “significant step” in addressing illegal gun sales, while claiming it would also protect gun rights.

“This is about keeping weapons out of the hands of terrorists and rogue actors. This is about reducing the risk of international transfers of conventional arms that will be used to carry out the world’s worst crimes. This is about keeping Americans safe and keeping America strong,” he said. “This treaty will not diminish anyone’s freedom. In fact, the treaty recognizes the freedom of both individuals and states to obtain, possess, and use arms for legitimate purposes.”

U.S. lawmakers, though, have long claimed the treaty could lead to new gun control measures. They note the U.S. Senate has final say on whether to approve the agreement.  Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., in a letter to President Obama, urged his administration not to take any action to implement the treaty without the consent of the Senate.

He claimed the treaty raises “fundamental issues” concerning “individual rights protected by the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution.”

The National Rifle Association blasted the plan, claiming it would impose an “invasive registration scheme” by requiring importing countries to give exporting countries information on “end users.” “The Obama administration is once again demonstrating its contempt for our fundamental, individual Right to Keep and Bear Arms,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action, said in a statement. “These are blatant attacks on the constitutional rights and liberties of every law-abiding American. The NRA will continue to fight this assault on our fundamental freedom.”

“Riling”?? Riling? Pardon the pun, but every man-jack of them ought to be up in arms. The terrible thunder of their outraged voices ought to be shaking the very walls and causing birds to fall from the sky. This is an attack on our very foundations, a usurpation of the lowest kind, the worst kind of oath breaking, end-running, foul playing, inept, stupid, misrepresentative overreach I have ever seen. High crimes and misdemeanors? Oh, to hell with that. This is a hanging offense.

Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., one of the most vocal opponents of the treaty, also sent a letter to Kerry declaring the treaty “dead in the water,” since a majority of senators has gone on record against the agreement.

“The administration is wasting precious time trying to sign away our laws to the global community and unelected U.N. bureaucrats,” he wrote.
...
Still, gun-rights supporters on Capitol Hill warn the treaty could be used as the basis for additional gun regulations inside the U.S. and have threatened not to ratify.

Over the summer, 130 members of Congress signed a letter to President Obama and Kerry urging them to reject the measure for this and other reasons.

The chance of adoption by the U.S. is slim. A two-thirds majority would be needed in the Senate to ratify.

Sorry, I refuse to accept that this is “merely” another one of Obama’s calculated insults against the American people. This is head and shoulders - on tall ladders! - above and beyond his standard daily douche-baggery. This is a crime against the Constitution, plain and simple. Whether it remains an empty gesture because of lack of ratification does not matter. And that lack ... is flexible. The United States of America has signed the Agreement. Period. That will ALWAYS be hanging over us. ALWAYS. Vote now to not ratify it. Vote next term to not ratify it. Vote again and again ... but someday, somehow, someone can vote to ratify it, and at that point the game is over. Your God given rights, signed away by traitors, as part of their One World commie plan to destroy the nation. Signed away without Legislative approval. Signed away without a national vote. Poof. Gone. And open the door to armies of   targets   Blue Helmets coming here from Turd World shitpits to search and enforce this Treaty and the adjunct dis-arming provisions that are guaranteed to follow. To leave the people powerless against tyranny. That’s what they have set in motion. That’s the stage THEY WANT.

And the GOP is merely “riled”? And they’re “threatening” to not ratify it? What a crock. Anything and everything is for sale in DC. You can’t trust a single one of those self-serving fuckwits to not trade his signature for   30 pieces of silver   a bit of special interest pork barrel earmark and some slush fund money in an offshore account. Not one of them. Not the Democrats certainly, and just as certainly not the Republicans. Like Juan Amnesty McLame. Or crybaby droopy Boehner. They will sell you out for their own personal gain and vote pandering. In a heartbeat, behind lies, smoke, and mirrors. But they’ll do it, and you know they will because they’ve done it countless times before.

Holy shit. If I had any hair left I’d tear it out. These filthy, dirty, rotten, underhanded, scrofulous sons of bitches.

Stake. Firewood. Kindling. Matches. Some assembly required.

There had better be a vote in Congress, and it had better be soon, and it had better say not just NO but HELL NO FOR THE NEXT 1500 YEARS and it had better carry both sides of the aisle in both houses in total unanimity. Because any Senator or Congressweasel who dares to dick about, who seems “open to new ideas”, who “is on the fence about this” is declaring themselves a traitor. Period. To even consider ratification is more than ample proof. And to actually vote Yes or Present ... there isn’t enough fire and brimstone in all of Hell.

No, I don’t care that you believe with all your heart in Constitutional Hegemony, that the Constitution shall always take precedence over any international agreement. So do I. But that view was made long ago (SCOTUS, Marcy, 1854) and the current “enlightened” leftist view is that things from back then don’t matter any more (unless it’s something they like) ... like last month’s sour milk, old inconvenient decisions seem to have a hidden “ignore by” date hiding in their penumbras ... so all it would take is a Supreme Court decision. Which could come down to one vote. Just like that other traitor did, Chief Justice Turnabout “Obamacare is a tax not a penalty” Roberts, and sold out the entire nation. Forever. “It is what it is” until they say it isn’t, and they can say that whenever the fluck they feel like it. And you can’t do a damn thing about it.

RCOB doesn’t begin to express my reaction to seeing this bit of news, even if I only found out about it a week later.

A ‘Must Read’ article…

I seriously urge everybody to just say ‘NO!’ to ObamaCare. Don’t participate. Don’t sign up. Don’t pay any fines or fees. Don’t even file tax returns if they ask about your health insurance.

Here’s that ‘must read’ article.

What, only 100?

$100 Million In Grants To Detroit

image

The federal fingerprint in efforts to fix Detroit is growing larger as the Obama administration has found millions of dollars in grant money to help the bankrupt city hire more police and firefighters, and clear out blighted neighborhoods.

But considering the Motor City is at least $18 billion in debt, it will take a far larger infusion of cash or historic deals with bond holders, insurance companies and other creditors to correct the problem.

Four high-ranking White House officials will discuss federal efforts and other opportunities Friday during a closed-door meeting at Wayne State University with Gov. Rick Snyder, state-appointed emergency manager Kevyn Orr, Mayor Dave Bing and community and business leaders.

The federal money being directed Detroit’s way by the U.S. government totals more than $100 million and will be augmented by millions of dollars more in resources from foundations and Detroit businesses, but it falls far short of a the wider bailout some in the city had sought.

A little gibs be betta den no gibs a tall.

“Something is better than nothing,” said Bridgette Shephard, 47, a social worker who lives in Detroit. “A bailout would have been better, but if we can sustain some of our needs with grants that would be a start. Let’s take it. Whatever kind of money it is to benefit the city, I’m all for it.”

Das wha I jus sayd!

But this is barely a drop in the bucket, and the bucket has some big rusty holes in it.

Detroit has had a poor record in making sure grant money is used properly and even spent at all.

In 2011, Mayor Dave Bing fired the director of the city’s Human Services Department after an internal investigation revealed $200,000 intended for poor residents was spent on office furniture for staff members.

The following year, his office had to scramble to use about $20 million in grants that had been left sitting for demolitions of thousands of vacant houses. The city’s Police Department also allowed a $400,000 grant to lapse for a new armored vehicle.

Corruption, much? Followed closely by lazy and stupid? Like I said, big rusty holes.

The Obama administration is trying to show its support without trying to send any message about a bailout, said Peter Henning, a Wayne State Law School professor.

Officials, especially those from HUD and Transportation, can commit funds for infrastructure projects, while Holder can chip in resources for fight Detroit’s high violent crime rate, Henning said.

“So these are back door ways to provide federal funding and support without having to seek a bailout, which would be dead on arrival from both parties,” he said. “The goal is to strengthen Detroit, but only indirectly. This is at best a muted commitment because what Detroit really needs is dollars and not just support that might be beneficial in three to five years. But any hope of that is a pipe dream.”

Well, yeah. Why should any of us give you a cent, considering how you’ve wasted everything that’s come your way before? The horse is dead. I don’t want to get the bill for giving it a new set of horseshoes.

Did This Happen????

House Defunds ObamaCare

The House voted Friday to keep the government open through mid-December but only if Congress strips funding from ObamaCare.

The vote was 230 to 189, and largely expected.

Current funding for the government is set to expire at the end of the month, and lawmakers must approve the stopgap bill in order to keep Washington open.

The GOP measure would fund the government through Dec. 15, at current funding levels.

“Today, the constitutional conservatives in the House are keeping their word to our constituents and our nation to stand true to our principles, to protect them from the most unpopular law ever passed in the history of the country- ObamaCare- that intrudes on their privacy and our most sacred right as Americans to be left alone,” Rep. John Culberson, R-Texas, said on the House floor.

Or Is It Just More Posturing BS??

The vote sets the stage for a showdown next week in the Democratic-led Senate. Realistically, the chance of the measure surviving a Senate vote is slim to none. One Senate Democrat has already announced the bill dead on arrival and called Friday’s vote a “waste of time.”

“Republicans are simply postponing for a few days the inevitable choice they must face: pass a clean bill to fund the government, or force a shutdown,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said in a statement following the vote. “I have said it before but it seems to bear repeating: the Senate will not pass any bill that defunds or delays Obamacare.”

The Senate is in recess until Tuesday.

At a noon rally on Capitol Hill, House Speaker John Boehner said the House vote speaks to the popularity of the Affordable Care Act – known as ObamaCare.

“You’ve got businesses all over the country who are not hiring because of the impact of this law,” he said. “You’ve got other businesses who are reducing the hours for their employees because of this law. And so, our message to the United States Senate is real simple: the American people don’t want to the government shut down and they don’t want ObamaCare.”

So what does this really mean? Obamacare isn’t actually dead. It isn’t repealed. It’s just defunded. For now? Until Tuesday? Or until next year? Or what?

WTF? WTFF?

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
