A Small Economics Lesson

Remember how during the campaigns the Dems would accuse President Bush’s administration of being in cahoots with the oil industry? 

The Dummycrap premise was that Bush and his cronies were making money hand over fist.  Yet thay could never explain the cognitive dissonance such an argument presents wherein high prices of oil seriously impact consumers which impact their choices of candidates.  Which SHOULD have lost Bush the election (if we take that argument to its logical conclusion.)

Just in case you encounter some of these moonbats out there, ask them to explain to you WHY oil prices are going DOWN after the election.

If they answer:  “supply and demand plus the reduced risk of uncertainty” give them a political party change form.  They actually get it.

Bringing Home The Bacon

So, what criteria do you use to elect your national senators and congresscritters?

Most of us vote for someone who will do things in Congress to benefit us.  But others of us vote for someone to not only do that but balance their decisions on “what’s good for the nation.”

More in a minute.

But first, a word from your author:  In moments of boredom and reverie I toy with the idea of running for office locally and then maybe even nationally (this usually takes place after I imbibe adult libations!) Anyway, I come to the conclusion that I would either be dissuaded to run by the burning crosses I’d find in my yard and if I overcome that then I would probably be shot during the campaign or if I avoid that, never be re-elected.

Let’s avoid discussing the first two and focus on the last hypothetical.  Why would I never be re-elected?  Because whenever it came time to make a decision on voting for a bill I would break ranks with either the President, my party, or my constituents.

And why would I do that?  Because my decisions would be based on what is good “for the nation.”

I found similar parallels during my Air Force career when it came time to moving people around or encouraging them to move on to other jobs.  Sure, they could have stayed or I could have fought tooth and nail to keep them but I knew they’d serve the Air Force better (and the country in the process) by going someplace else that needed their talents more than I did or I saw their potential and wanted to give them a boost.

Basically that is the point behind this article where Walter Williams writes about a model created by a Professor Kennedy that measures the efficiency of a lawmaker’s vote and relates it to economic efficiency.  He calls it the Econ-E Score and it functions

“by investigating votes in the 106th and 107th Congresses on issues where economic efficiency was at stake. He (Dr. Kennedy) analyzed votes on economic legislation that would yield nationwide benefits greater than costs and those that would have nationwide costs greater than benefits. The former were designated as efficiency enhancing and the latter efficiency diminishing.”

This TRULY is fascinating.  And guess who’s more efficient---Republicans or Democrats?

Boycotts and Strikes

You’ve heard how Sinclair Communication is now going to pare down their special against The Poodle, right?  They say it is due to market pressures.  Dems got pissed and started writing.  Hey, for the same reason we’re applying pressure on ABC about that sleazy show on housewives, Kerry’s ass kissers are doing the same at Sinclair.

Which goes to show that capitalism works.

This next one I liked.  Walnut pickers went on strike 13 years ago as a show of refusal of a raise and benefits package.  Their benefits ended two years later.  The company hired other workers, made improvements, added labor and cost saving machinery and stayed in business.  Workers now make $20 an hour with about $10 more value-added as benefits.

They are close to ending that strike but since 76 votes are being contested, it may not pan out.  Of course, the AFL-CIO is out there scaring the masses while their own big shots get hundreds of thousands in annual salaries with never any threat of a layoff.  Nice support of “the people” huh?

Anyway, how can you help?  I say we support Diamond Walnuts and buy nothing but their brand for the holidays.  Let’s use capitalism to counter the assholes in the unions.

And The Dems Say The Economy Sucks?!?!?!?

Take a look at these numbers and tell me how anyone can say, with a straight face, that the economy sucks.  Hey, I am not so stupid that I do not understand how not everyone can benefit at the same time or at the same rate, but with numbers like these the old adage “a rising tide raises all boats” has to apply.  Things are better and will continue to get even better so long as we are able to fight terrorists FIRST and FOREMOST.  Fail that and we are doomed.

The problem is that the Dummycraps are NEVER satisfied.  No matter what you do they will find fault.  Got 2 million poor people in a country of 280 million, reduce that number by 75% and they would still say we had too many poor.

Go from 55% home ownership to 69% and they still think it is not enough.

Raise the minimum wage to $10 an hour and they’d cry for more.

Solution?  FUCK THEM and their lying minions who would rather see our country fail just so they could gain a partisan win.

Larry Kudlow points out how well the economy has been doing in the past year:

• Inflation-adjusted consumer spending is up 3.6%.

• Residential housing investment is up 13.2%.

• Capital-goods investment by businesses is up 13.9%.

• Spending on machine tools for heavy-industry manufacturing is up a whopping 54.2%.

• Exports and imports are up nearly 11%.

• After-tax corporate profits are up 19.5%.

• Industrial production is up 5.2%.

• High-tech production is up 23.7%.

• Productivity has reached an astonishing 4.6% rate.

• Household wealth is up 11.1%, hitting a record high of $45.9 trillion.

• The GDP deflator is up only 2.2%.

• The core consumer-spending deflator (excluding food and energy) is up only 1.4%.

• Interest rates are at 45-year lows, with short-term rates at less than 2%.

• 15-year mortgage rates are just above 5%.

• Home ownership stands at a record 69.2%.

Minimum Wage Debate

When I heard President Bush’s reply to Fuckface’s proposal for higher minimum wages I got so upset I turned the radio off. 

ISSUE: Raise minimum wage
Response: We need to make education more accountable

WTF?

I know where he was coming from but there was no lead-in to the education thing.  THIS is the answer he should have given:

“Look, Bob.  Wages are something to be negotiated between the employer and the employee.  It is not the job of government to set wages for private sector employees.  Our Constitution specifically states that the government is not to alter the terms of a contract between individuals. 

The matter of wages paid for services rendered is something to be resolved in negotiations between the employer and employee and then expressed in the terms of a contract between the parties. 

The government has no role here. 

And while I’m addressing this, let’s talk about the people who are actually earning the minimum wage.  Most of these people are teenagers working in entry-level jobs.  They’re developing job skills and will only spend a minimum amount of time at the minimum wage. 

But what about that small number of people who are trying to raise a family on minimum wage.  My opponent won’t say this.  It’s harsh, but it’s the truth.  If you have done such a pathetic job of developing job skills and a work ethic that you cannot earn more than the minimum wage, then you have no business having children.  We have far too many people in this country who have children that they know full well they cannot afford to raise. 

The answer to this problem is not to force employers to pay them more than they are worth.  The answer is to educate people as to the cost of properly raising a child, and to encourage them to make sure they can pay the bills before they make the decision to have a baby.”

One more thing from me:  why is it we need to reward laziness or lack of ambition in people who have min-wage jobs with families?  And in so doing reward teenagers, stay-at-home moms bored with staying at home, or senior citizens looking to make a bit of pocket change? After all they make up a lion’s share of minimum wage employees.

Will they give employers more productivity for the increase in pay?  Will service we get from them become 35% better?

HA!!!  Keep dreaming!

Productive Inequality or Income Inequality?

The next time you hear a Dummycrap whine about how the rich are getting richer and the poor getting poorer, ask him why he pays $50 to watch a football game but won’t pay $50 to watch your local high school kids do the same.  The answer should be something along the lines of either, “high school kids aren’t that good” or “no one knows who they are.”

So then ask him why is it we should NOT reward those who do things so well that we so enjoy participating in?

Trust me, he won’t be able to answer that.

I Feel Vindicated

For years I have been saying that EVERYONE in this country should pay taxes.  NO ONE should be exempt for any reason.  My rationale being that once we reach the magic number of 51 percent of the electorate NOT paying taxes, those of us doing so may as well bend over, grab our ankles, and await the royal screwing we will get (without Vaseline, thank you!) because those who do not pay will all of a sudden realize they can vote themselves largesse from the treasury.  They will have no vested interest in the whole affair so whatever politicians want to do involving passing out money they will vote for it.  After all, it costs these voters nothing.

Being a much better writer than I, Walter E. Williams goes into detail about this and also has a pretty radical solution.

Careful what you ask for

Two of the best bosses I ever had in the Air Force were Colonels of Puerto Rican descent while I worked at the American Embassy in Lisbon, Portugal. They taught me a lot and I am indebted to them. Why do I bring this up? Because it helps set the stage for the following story I got from one of them.

One of the many headaches that the U. S. had was the Puerto Rican Island of Vieques. In the waning years of the Clinton Administration, protesters demanded that the US Navy abandon bombing and naval gun fire exercises that had taken place on the largely uninhabited island for nearly seventy years. Liberal icons bumped into one another to fly to Puerto Rico, boat over to the island, trespass (but never on a day that there was an exercise scheduled) and get arrested for the benefit of the New York Times or Newsweek. They included : Al Sharpton, Mrs. Jesse Jackson, Joan Baez, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Edward Olmos, Michael Moore and Ramsey Clark, just to name a few. These in addition of the local politicos and strap hangers.

In 2002, the bombing exercises were transferred to an Air Force bombing range in central Florida, not far from the Jacksonville and Pensacola Naval Air Stations. In January, many of the protesters were back in Puerto Rico, celebrating the final bombing exercise on Vieques and waved Puerto Rican flags and placards that read:

"U.S. Navy, get out of Puerto Rico."

The following Feb, Rumsfeld announced that the U.S. Navy will close the Roosevelt Roads Naval Air Station in Puerto Rico in 2004, eliminating 1200 civilian jobs as well as 700 military positions. This naval facility is estimated to have put nearly $300 million annually into the local economy. The next day a stunned governor Sila Calderon, held a news conference in San Juan, protesting the base closure as a serious blow to the Commonwealth's fragile economy. The governor stated that "The people of Puerto Rico don't now or never did have an interest in closing the Vieques bombing range or the Roosevelt Roads naval base. We are interested in both staying in Puerto Rico."

When asked, the Commander-in Chief, Western Atlantic Command, said, "Without Vieques, I see no further need for the facility at Roosevelt Roads. None."

So, Yanqui go home? Fine. But we'll take our dollars with us. Hasta la vista, baby!

On February 21, the Secretary of Defense also announced that starting this year, the U.S. European Command would begin moving most if not all of its active combat and support units from bases in Germany to others being established in Poland, The Czech Republic, Hungary and Turkey to "better position them for rapid deployment to likely hot spots in those parts of the world".

Immediately the business and government leaders in the German states of Hesse, Rhineland and Wurttemburg, protested the loss of nearly $6 billion in revenue each year from the bases and manpower to be displaced. A spokesman for the Foreign Ministry speculated that the move may be "what the Americans call 'payback' for the actions of this government in opposing Military action in Iraq.

" Does anyone know the German translation for "Hasta la vista, baby?"

Oh, ain't it nice to see a government with guts and a good memory.

John Kerry is traveling the nation on his misery tour, inundating voters with his pessimism about America's economy. What voters may not realize, however, is that the growing economy that Kerry continues to talk down is remarkably similar to the economy Bill Clinton touted during his 1996 reelection campaign and that Kerry speaks of in glowing terms. Unemployment was 5.6 percent in May 1996, the exact same level as it is now. The average monthly payroll growth from January to May 1996 was 233,000 jobs, and from January to May 2004 the economy created an average of 238,000 jobs each month. Many key economic indicators are stronger today than in 1996, including GDP growth and homeownership.

President Bush's leadership has helped America overcome great challenges, including 9/11, war and recession. As a result of the President's pro-growth policies, America's economy today is strong and getting stronger-even stronger than Bill Clinton's 1996 economy.

Analysis

Job growth is as robust as it was in the mid-1990s. Average monthly payroll job growth for the last five months is stronger than during the same period in 1996. And contrary to Kerry's claim, the gross job growth is occurring in high-paying industries including manufacturing. On average, more Americans were in part-time jobs during President Clinton's first term than President Bush's first term. Kerry says that today's job growth is occurring only in part-time work and food service jobs, yet ignores Clinton's eight year record:

Three times more temporary jobs (1.3 million) than manufacturing jobs were created (385,000).

Four times more food service jobs (1.53 million) were created than manufacturing jobs (385,000).

More food service jobs (1.53 million) were created than Internet and telecommunications jobs (1 million).

More temporary jobs (1.3 million) were created than Internet and telecommunications jobs (1 million).


Unemployment

The unemployment rate is lower than the average of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. The unemployment rates match President Clinton's during the exact same time periods.

Growth

Production has soared during President Bush's stewardship. Real GDP increased at an average 5.6% over the last three quarter, more than two percentage points faster than the comparable period of the Clinton Administration. Propelled by low inflation and middle class tax relief real after tax workers' pay has increased at more than twice the rate experienced at this point in the Clinton Administration, $1,900 under President Bush versus just $980 under President Clinton. Despite the stock-bubble bursting and mutual fund scandals, more American households own stock and mutual funds than in 1996. Where Kerry sees misery, consumers see progress and opportunity. Consumer sentiment is as high as it was in the mid-1990s and consumer expectations are strong as well.

Homeownership

Homeownership is at record levels and for the first time in our nation's history, more than half of all minorities own their own home. The National Realtors Association's Housing Affordability Index reveals that during the first quarter of 2004, the nation's typical household had 144.1% of the income needed to purchase a home at the median existing-home price, which was $170,800. In the first quarter, a median-income household ($54,517) could afford a home costing $246,100, which is well above the national median price of $170,800. In contrast, a median-income household could only afford a home with a median price of $145,000 in 1996.

Middle-income families are not only able to afford a home, but they're buying much larger homes. More than 57% of new home construction in 2003 were housing units larger than 2,000 square feet of floor area - up from only 48% in 1996. And today, despite Kerry's claims that middle-income families are more squeezed, families are spending more dining out, giving more to charity, and even going on more cruises - a vacation option once thought only available to the wealthy.

More To Be Done

President Bush has said that he will not rest until every American who wants a job can find one. He understands the difficulty of workers transitioning from old economy jobs to Innovation economy jobs which is why he has increased job training funding by 12% to $23 billion and raised support for Trade Adjustment Assistance by 150%. President Bush is determined, even with today's record homeownership levels, to close the gap between minority and non-minority homeownership. He has proposed the No Down Payment Mortgage and enacted the American Dream Downpayment Act to help thousands of families own their own home. The President's policies are working to strengthen our growing economy, train workers for high-paying jobs, and help Americans achieve their dreams.
