NJ BS: Raise Taxes To Stabilize Revenue Stream

This is major BS.

Gas Usage Drops, So NJ To Raise Pump Taxes?
They “deserve” to collect a fixed amount, regardless of consumption

Say what??

A formula in the 2016 state law that raised the tax nearly 23 cents a gallon [ under Chris Christie a couple years ago ] also allows for yearly adjustments to make sure the gas tax generates a steady amount of revenue, just under $2 billion.

If sales go down, the tax goes up. And right now, they’re going down drastically.

“Obviously lower volumes and lower activity in our transportation system is going to cause an automatic need – and that’s how the legislation is written, right? – an automatic need to raise the tax,” said Regina Egea, president of the Garden State Initiative, a conservative think tank. “And we think that’s the wrong thing to do, given we’re going to be in recovery ideally in the fall.”

The state Treasury Department hasn’t issued monthly revenue reports since the coronavirus crisis began, but it said in a notice to bond holders March 23 that collections of motor fuels taxes and others have been reduced significantly.

Egea said the gas stations’ association has estimated a 65% drop in gas sales. GSI says a comparative analysis by the crowd-sourced traffic site INRIX estimates that passenger travel in New Jersey was 55% lower on March 24 than on the same day a month earlier.

Egea said the increase can be avoided if the Legislature steps in and passes a law changing the 2016 legislation. She said it would have to be done before Aug. 31, the deadline for calculating the increase based on past-year collections and future projections. Any increase would take effect Oct. 1.

“It’s just something, one more item that the Legislature is going to have to deal with, and frankly I think it’s to the overall economic benefit of all the residents and all the businesses, this has to be part of their consideration when they do the budget,” Egea said.

Egea said the formula should be changed permanently to require a law to be passed each time the tax goes up, rather than have it be determined by the state treasurer, in consultation with the top finance official for the Office of Legislative Services.

“Every other tax increase has to voted on by the Legislature,” she said. “This one was delegated, and I think it ought to be back and they ought to have it on their record.”

Another one of my crazy delusional ideas: your state government spends no more than they take in as taxes, so they adjust the budget accordingly. And a good 25% of the budget goes towards paying off what they owe from previous deficit spending.

AOC: COVID = RAYCIS !!!

The latest Stoopid from Little Miss Marxist.

AOC “Environmental Racism”: Wants Minority Reparations For Coronavirus

image

She Guevara

Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Friday that long-term environmental racism and income inequality were causing coronavirus to disproportionately affect minorities.

“COVID deaths are disproportionately spiking in Black + Brown communities,” Ocasio-Cortez began, explaining that the reason for that was related to decades of racial and income inequality.

Ocasio-Cortez then argued that long-term policies had created a different kind of “underlying health condition,” adding, “Why? Because the chronic toll of redlining, environmental racism, wealth gap, etc. ARE underlying health conditions.”

“Inequality is a comorbidity,” Ocasio-Cortez concluded by calling for reparations to those hardest hit. “COVID relief should be drafted with a lens of reparations.”

“Giant asteroid hits Earth. Millions killed. Minorities disproportionately affected.”

SSDD. No matter what the issue is, it’s always minorities being hardest hit. Because raycis. So throw MORE money at them. Always. Forever.

The commie bartender then yaps about what government should do ... yeah, if we lived in a totalitarian Socialist state. It’s a miracle she didn’t call for student loan forgiveness too. This time.

What a dingbat.

Go To Hell

Governor HalfWhit the hypocrite now wants medicine she just denied the other day

Michigan Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s administration has requested an emergency supply of the drugs President Trump touted as having success treating patients with severe symptoms of the novel coronavirus, in a reversal from the state’s directive to medical professionals last week to avoid the medication for this purpose.

Michigan, this week, requested hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine from the Strategic National Stockpile for physicians to use to help treat patients with COVID-19, after the Food and Drug Administration over the weekend granted an emergency use authorization for the anti-malarial drugs.

But last week, Whitmer’s administration threatened physicians prescribing the drugs, saying they were subject to “administrative action” should they continue to use the medication.

Actions have consequences. Michigan has had plenty of time to overthrow their governor by now. They haven’t, so to hell with them. Maybe I’m going stir-crazy from the isolation. Maybe I’ve just had it up to here with the hypocrisy, treason, and dirty politics. Fuck this woman, and fuck her entire state.

PK. I’ll soften that up. Having now proved her utter incompetence and her absolute lack of concern over the welfare of the people of Michigan, Governor Whitmer should immediately resign in disgrace. Then and only then can Michigan get some pills and some PPE gear.

SALTy San Fran Nan Doing It Again

Pelosi Pushing Tax Cuts For The Rich

Wait, I thought that was the purview of Trump and Bush??

And I question the timing of this.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is pushing for a new stimulus bill that would roll back the state and local tax deduction (SALT) cap, a proposal that would predominantly help wealthy individuals — including most residents in Pelosi’s district and perhaps even Pelosi herself.

A 2019 report from the Joint Committee on Taxation projected that of those who would face lower tax liability from the elimination of the SALT cap – which only affects those who itemize tax deductions – 94 percent earn at least $100,000. The government would lose out on $77.4 billion in tax dollars, with more than half of that amount being saved by taxpayers earning $1 million or more. Those earning more than $200,000 would reap most of the balance.

But ain’t the Dems always screaming that the rich should pay their fair share?

What a self-serving hypocrite. Yeah, like that’s news.

Just a reminder, this SALT cap hasn’t made much of an impact in states with reasonable levels of taxation. It only has a big impact in the high tax states like CA, NY, NJ. And a funny thing, all those places seem to be run by Dems, since forever.

Jerks Knee Jerking

Nevada Gov: No “off label” HCQ treatments for you. Because Tropical Fish?

Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak has restricted the prescription of two malaria medications that President Trump named as potential remedies for coronavirus, after a man died and his wife was hospitalized for using a fish tank cleaning additive with a similar name as a substitute.

Sisolak, a Democrat, issued an executive order Tuesday prohibiting prescriptions of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine for coronavirus patients after the president mentioned the two drugs during a press briefing.

“While the two drugs have necessary medical purposes, there is no conclusive evidence at this time among COVID-19 experts or Nevada’s own medical health advisory team that the drugs provide treatment for COVID-19 patients,” Sisolak said in a statement.

While addressing reporters, Trump mentioned both drugs as being fast-tracked for use as treatment, touting their likelihood of being effective despite the FDA still testing it for coronavirus use.

The order also limits a prescription to a 30-day supply to ensure it’s available for “legitimate medical purposes” and so that people cannot find a way to stockpile the drug.

Sisolak faced a backlash from Trump allies over the order, as the drugs are in fact being used in trials. They are among a select group of possible therapies the World Health Organization is currently looking at as potentially treating or preventing COVID-19, though the effectiveness of the drugs remains unclear.

The WHO originally did not have the two drugs as part of their trial, but high interest led them to reconsider.

I didn’t post on yesterday’s story about the two idiot senior citizens in Arizona who poisoned themselves by taking fish tank stuff. Because chloroquine and because Trump. Most of the news was about the news; how the various DemMSM media outlets had used this as a cudgel against the President. I did look into it quite a bit, which not one of the media sites has done.

First, the stuff is not fish tank cleaner. It is aquarium antibiotic. HUGE difference.

Second, this stuff generally uses a different kind of chloroquine (the sulphate variant), and often has some other kinds of really strong medicine mixed in with it.

Third, it is really hard to find in the USA in consumer sized amounts, and not all that easy to locate in professional bulk either.

Fourth, in Australia and other areas around there on the far side of the world, prices have been skyrocketing for a week now.

So these two winners in AZ aren’t the only people thinking along these lines. And unless they were major tropical fish enthusiasts, I have a whole lot of doubts about their story. Like, maybe they bought it from eBay in panic. Or maybe this is a perfect murder. He’s dead. She survived. Blame Trump.

There have been media stories about hoarding HCQ, although whatever kind of hoarding that might impact the distribution channels would have to be done at the drug warehouse level to make any difference.

Very little news front page coverage that the Isreali pharma company TEVA has given the USA six million doses. That would be positive news and the DemMSM exists only to fuel the panic in order to bring down Trump. However the story is out there, but it didn’t fit the agenda.

And now we have the Governor of Nevada banning the HCQ / Z-Pack treatment. Because OF COURSE he’s a Dem.

However, the entire chloroquine angle is being denigrated by the Left, simply because President Trump mentioned it. I admit, I’ve spent far too much time digging into this whole coronavirus situation since the very beginning. Aspects of the disease, it’s origins, victims, tests, and treatments. While various forms of chloroquine have been being used for this with pretty good effect around the world for quite some time now, it is not a perfect panacea. Nothing is. But the moment our President mentioned it as a ray of hope, it was instant anathema to a large part of our media who then ran all kinds of negative stories about it. And Governor Sleestak is playing the same tune. Remember this, Nevadians.

[ If you want to stay abreast of the latest news about treatments, trials, and other COVID R&D, the investor pages are your best bet. They put these stories out there without political bias and without drowning you in medical terminology. ]

Oh Yeah, I Remember Her

Tulsi Gabbard Officially Drops Out Of Dem Race

Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard has suspended her long-shot campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.

She made the announcement in a video posted to Twitter on Thursday. The move comes as former Vice President Joe Biden consolidates support in the party and builds a massive delegate lead over his only remaining rival in the primary race, Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Gabbard, in the video, offered her “full support” to Biden.  But Gabbard also praised Sanders.

Gabbard, who backed the populist senator’s 2016 White House bid, said: “I have great appreciation for Senator Sanders’ love for our country and the American people and his sincere desire to improve the lives of all Americans.”

Gabbard – a four-term congresswoman who in 2012 became the first Hindu elected to Congress – launched her presidential campaign in January of last year.

Oh Puh Leazze AOC

As Usual, AOC Is FOS

AOC shows up on Fox News, claiming voter suppression is what caused her boy Bernie to lose in Michigan. Uh huh. “Rampant voter suppression”.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., strongly implied Thursday in her first sit-down interview with Fox News that Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., lost this week’s Michigan primary because of voter suppression.

“Special Report” host Bret Baier broached the topic by mentioning an appearance by Sanders at the University of Michigan that drew around 10,000 people before asking Ocasio-Cortez, a Sanders surrogate, “How can you say the progressive position is still prevailing nationwide when Joe Biden is winning so much?”

“Well, I think one thing that isn’t being talked about is the rampant voter suppression in this country,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “Right there in Ann Arbor, where we had that rally, those kids were waiting three hours in line to vote in Michigan. And so when we talk about who’s turning out and who’s not turning out, we absolutely need to be clear.”

According to the Fox News Voter Analysis, Democratic primary voters under age 30 were still a source of strength for the Vermont senator in Michigan, but he won just 13 percent of seniors – and more than twice as many seniors turned out as young voters.

Baier asked Ocasio-Cortez to clarify her voter suppression claims.

“You’re saying that you think voters didn’t get to vote that wanted to vote in Michigan?” Baier asked.

“Absolutely. You know, obviously, there’s also more that we need to do in terms of turning out youth voters,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “We need to make sure that we’re inspiring young people to turn out. But when you do turn out, you should not be waiting three, four, seven hours in order to vote.”

image

Now here’s a funny thing. Michigan has absentee voting for their primary. Approaching a million absentee ballots were requested.

As of 8 a.m. Monday, 12 hours before the deadline for requesting an absentee ballot at an election clerk’s office, the number of absentee votes already cast for the 2020 Michigan Primary was 712,851, according to data from the Michigan Secretary State.

That’s of a total 970,290 ballots requested, meaning 73% of ballots have already been filled out and returned.

It’s 314,808 more ballots than were cast at the same time in 2016, for a 79% increase.
...
At the start of the last day to request absentee ballots 970,290 had been requested, more than 474,000 in the 2016 Michigan Primary, for a 96% increase.

So not only are absentee ballots available, they can be requested and submitted up to a mere 12 hours before the primary polls open. And people in Michigan are using them nearly twice as much as they did last time.

So cut the shit bar girl. Your old dufus lost because he sucks. Not because of any “rampant voter suppression.”

Well, maybe your Twinky-Dink Snowflakes didn’t vote because they were too stupid and too lazy to make the teensy tiny effort to get an absentee ballot ahead of time. You can get the form online. But OMG!!!! You have to print out a paper form, sign it, and then mail it in. With a stamp. Which means maybe finding a mailbox or going to the Post Office. Or finding the county clerk’s office, going there, and dropping it off. Like, that’s totally gross. So Boomer. Disenfranchisement!! Voter Suppression!!!!

Smells Like Fascism And Slave Labor

NY Governor To Use Prison Labor To Make Hand Sanitizer

Nothing wrong with the government entering the capitalist arena with an unfair advantage, right? Corner the market and take over the means of production. Maybe it starts with hand sanitzer in NY, but what’s to stop them from expanding into anything and everything in any state?

Fascism? Nah, couldn’t be.

New York state announced Monday that it is using prison labor to produce its own hand sanitizer product in an effort to contain the spread of the deadly coronavirus.

“We are introducing New York State clean hand sanitizer, made conveniently by the state of New York,” said Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) said in a press conference. Cuomo claimed that the sanitizer is superior to others because it contains 75 percent alcohol.

“To Purell, and Mr. Amazon and Mr. eBay, if you continue the price gouging, we will introduce our product, which is superior to your product,” said Cuomo. “And you don’t even have the floral bouquet, so stop price gouging.”

Corcraft Products, operated by New York’s Department of Correctional Services, Division of Industries, is manufacturing the product and expects to pump out 100,000 gallons weekly.

How about that, they already have their shell corporation set up.

~~~~~
A typical countertop bottle of hand sanitizer is 8 fluid ounces; 8 fluid ounces is a cup, 16 cups to the gallon, so 100K g/wk means 1.6 million bottles of the stuff per week. While that sounds like a lot, there are tens of millions of people frantic to buy as much as they get their hands on ASAP.
So let’s look at a basic Build A Factory kit. It really isn’t hard or expensive to set up an operation like this in a matter of hours when you’re the government.
Assuming 24-7 emergency production and a slight amount of product wastage, 100K gal/wk is 600 gallons per hour, the output of 3 small factory size mixing tubs (think surplus dairy tubs), and a simple bottle filling assembly line that can flow 160 bottles per minute. That’s pretty slow. Break the flow into 5 or 6 parts and the fill rate is down to under 26 seconds per bottle. That’s a slow rate even for manual labor using a turkey baster to fill them. Honestly, this is hardly bigger than a garage sized effort.
A small factory based in a closed grocery store - like all those A&Ps sitting around empty - could churn out 10 times as much with hardly any automation or computerized process control. Easy to ramp that up to 1000 times the original expectation with a dozen tubs, process control systems, automatic injection bottle filling. (seriously, you could just take over a beer plant which is 95% similar process. And they can churn 10s of thousands of bottles per hour. In a true emergency you’d even use the beer bottles, just to get the product out the door faster) With flow control systems and hydraulic agitators you don’t even need mixing tanks. Just pump it all together as you need it. Especially given the ease of funding it with tax money, the vast amounts of subsidized ethanol available, and all the labor supply you could ever want. The only (no pun intended) bottle necks I can see are in the plastic extrusions to make the bottles and pump caps, and the printed cardboard boxes to pack them in. But with “emergency powers” the State could co-opt them immediately.
Yup, let government take over the means of existing production and it can ramp up insanely fast. Probably make the trains run on time too.
an odd thing to say
Former primary candidate Andrew Yang threw his hat in the ring for Joe Biden, saying he was the party’s “prohibitive nominee”. I’m pretty certain that Mr. Yang didn’t mean to say “presumptive”.
Mr. Yang had been a Bernie Bro, but now he’s part of the “Joe-mentum”.
Yang indicated that Sanders no longer has a viable path to the Democratic presidential nomination.
“I say this having supported Bernie Sanders in 2016. Bernie was an inspiration for me, inspired my run. But the math says Joe is our prohibitive nominee. We need to bring the party together. We need to start working on defeating Donald Trump in the fall,” Yang said.
But “prohibitive”? That means inhibitory or extortionate. Prohibitive rules stop you from doing something. Prohibitive prices not only stop you from buying something, you walk away mad, going “$39.99 for a 3oz bottle of Purell? Who da fug do these thieves think they’re fooling?? I’m never shopping in this dump again!!”
So what is Yang saying here - either directly or as a Freudian slip - that Joe’s their guy even though it will cause them to lose? They chose this one knowing that people won’t vote for him, or that they expect the backlash to cost them plenty of other seats because the public is so offended? That doesn’t sound like much of a ringing endorsement to me.
OTOH “We choose to lose” is one amazing campaign slogan. If you’re a total idiot.
Extreme Measures
Let’s see how I can polarize the optics on this one. What the hex, I’ve been learning from the MSM. Ah, I know ... put it in the worst possible light ... weaponize it to the highest degree ...
Nazi NY Governor Cuomo Sends His Personal Army To Corral All Those Filthy Jews
Just days after the state assembly granted him unlimited emergency powers ...
New York is creating a “containment area” around a community in New Rochelle, in an attempt to limit the spread of coronavirus in an area that quickly became the state’s largest source of COVID-19 infections, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday.
“New Rochelle is a particular problem,” Cuomo said, describing the area as a cluster of cases.
“The numbers have been going up, the numbers continue to go up, the numbers are going up unabated — and we do need a special public health strategy for New Rochelle,” Cuomo said.
A synagogue in the city has become the epicenter of an outbreak in Westchester County — which accounts for 108 of New York state’s 173 coronavirus cases.
As of Tuesday, that synagogue is also at the center of a circle that extends for a one-mile radius, marking the state’s containment area.
The governor is calling on the National Guard to help maintain the containment area. Cuomo said the troops will be deployed “to deliver food to homes, to help with the cleaning of public spaces.”
The new policy will take effect Thursday and remain in place through March 25th.
This is one of the areas that was endemic with the measles last year. For months and months.
And now two people across the Hudson River in Rockland County have it too. The same kind of people. Another 22 in self quarantine. The 2 guys were delivering food to that same community in New Rochelle over in Westchester. And they’re in Monsey ... another one of those communities. Which also went through the measles thing recently. And before that, the hepatitis thing. Oy vey, it never stops.
Health officials announced two residents who have been confirmed to have coronavirus potentially exposed others to the disease from February 28 - March 2 in Rockland County.
...
“It was previously believed that these infected individuals had not worked as caterers during these events and it was only through the detective work of one of our investigators that this discovery was made,” said Dr. Ruppert. “Any person who believes they may have been exposed should contact their health care provider by phone right away. I also ask that anyone who becomes ill with this disease be completely forthcoming with our investigators, it is only with your help that we can prevent the spread of this disease.”
ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY — Two cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Rockland County, County Executive Ed Day confirmed. Both people who caught the virus worked at a bar mitzvah service and celebration at Young Israel of New Rochelle.
...
The synagogue’s rabbi has also tested positive for the virus.
The governor of any state is the nominal leader of that state’s National Guard. In effect, they are his army. And while they are Guardsmen, to the rest of us they are soldiers. I have no idea if these troops were sent to this task armed. I would really hope not, but being armed is what they do. And I do not know when the last time was, or if there ever was, an effort in this country to use troops to curtail the movement of citizens en masse. And there are a LOT of people in that one mile circle in New Rochelle. It’s super-suburbia, just north of New York City. And just like Lakewood NJ (where I fully expect the next outbreak to blossom, just like with the measles), and Monsey NY, it’s a very very Jewish neighborhood.
The very far Left leaning Democrat governor of NY, Andrew Cuomo, was just given nearly unlimited emergency powers by a midnight session of the State Assembly. They hardly even read the bill, just rubber stamped it in the middle of the night. For real. So much so that Progressives around the state were wondering out loud and online if they had gone too far. Fascism? Nazism? Where’s the line? And just a couple days later out comes his army to encircle the Jews? Horry Clap. These are some terrible optics even without the opportunistic slant.
Was it necessary? Probably, but who cares? Let no crisis go to waste: it’s Kristallnacht in NY. It’s what antisemitic Leftists do when they have unlimited power.
Sexist Racist DNC Moves The Goalposts To Exculde Woman Of Color
No Debating It: DNC Changes Rules To Exclude Tulsi Gabbard From Next Debate
Under the rules that had been in place before, with a whole 2 delegates won Tulsi Gabbard was eligible to take part in the next debate. But now she can’t because the latest set of rules only allows candidate who have at least 20% so far. That means just Bernie and Joe.
The Democratic National Committee has changed its presidential debate qualifications to exclude Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D., Hawaii), the only remaining female and minority candidate in the race.
Under the newly announced rules for the March 15 CNN/Univision debate, candidates must have at least 20 percent of the awarded pledged delegates in order to qualify. In every debate since February’s Iowa caucus, any candidate who received even a single delegate automatically qualified for the debate. Gabbard won two delegates on Super Tuesday by placing second in her native American Samoa.
Elderly white male candidates Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders have already locked up the required delegates, but the rule change makes it nearly impossible for Gabbard to qualify, even with a strong showing in the next round of primaries. The congresswoman needs 335 more delegates to lock up 20 percent by March 15, but only 352 are up for grabs on March 10.
But, but Tulsi qualifies somehow as a Woman Of Color, which should make her exempt from all laws and rules, right? Not this time ...
DNC spokeswoman Xochitl Hinojosa appeared to downplay the prospect of Gabbard making the debates in a Super Tuesday tweet, saying, “of course the threshold will go up.”
This looks pretty unfair. And probably racist, sexist, anti-military, anti-Hawaiian, and whatever else you can think of. But this is how the DNC machine works. Changing stuff at the last second. Which tastes of childishness, corruption, and carries the smoky odor of back room deals.
In a fair system, all the rules would be laid out ahead of time, and not subject to change. So that every would know that after Super Tuesday, if they didn’t have big numbers, then there weren’t going to get a podium of their own on TV. Which is a death knell for their campaigns.
The Phoenix debate, the 11th debate this primary season, will be hosted by CNN and Univision in partnership with CHC BOLD, the political arm of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
CNN’s Dana Bash and Jake Tapper, along with Univision’s Jorge Ramos, will moderate the debate, and Univision’s Ilia Calderón also will “facilitate audience questions,” the networks announced. The debate is scheduled to run from 8 p.m. through 10 p.m. Eastern Time.
yeah, but understanding would require basic math skills
well no kidding
More of the same, with extra detailing:
Hemingway pointed out how Bloomberg’s failed campaign, despite unlimited resources, pokes holes in the popular narrative that Russia helped Donald Trump “steal” the 2016 election.
“We had years where people were saying a couple hundred thousand dollars in barely literate Facebook ads from Russians caused Donald Trump to win. Here you had a guy spend nearly $1 billion and he went nowhere. It’s a humiliating defeat for Michael Bloomberg,” she said.
Host Bret Baier drilled the point home: “So Russians influenced the election with $200,000, or $300,000 in Facebook ads? And Mike Bloomberg couldn’t get more than 50 delegates with $600 million dollars?”
“And this hurts Bernie Sanders’s message, too, because he likes to say the billionaires control everything,” Hemingway said. “Clearly Bloomberg having all this money didn’t do as much for him as Biden having the media and the establishment behind him. I would pick media and establishment over millions all day.”
It’s now two days after little Mike withdrew his nomination, and I’m over here wondering if his buyer’s remorse is setting in. A big thanks to little Mike. He effectively destroyed the liberal establishment media narrative about “the impact” of Russian Bot Facebook ads; what an epic fail for the Dems.
I mean, to come up with the Russian Facebook narrative, to begin with, and now for one of their own to completely dismantle it – it’s delicious. And I’m here to relish in the fact that a Democrat destroyed the BS Democrat narrative. This one factor alone was worth the hundreds of millions in cold hard cash he spent with his pathetic media minions.
Fox News’ Mollie Hemingway’s narrative over at The Federalist.
PS - the embarrassing math thing. One of many actually.
All Hail King Cuomo
If a knee jerk reaction is high enough, you can get kicked in the nutz.
“a reckless expansion of executive power”
When even Progressives feel that giving the executive branch more power is too much, what have they done??
In the wee hours of Tuesday morning, the state legislature approved $40 million in emergency funding to help contain the COVID-19 outbreak in New York. Buried within the legislation is a provision that has alarmed progressive lawmakers and advocates: an extraordinary, broad, and little-understood expansion of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s emergency powers.
...
With the support of both legislative leaders, the emergency funding bill overwhelmingly passed the Democrat-controlled Assembly and State Senate. Andrea Stewart-Cousins, the Senate Majority Leader, and Carl Heastie, the Speaker of the State Assembly, pushed for its passage, overriding the concerns of the health committee chairs in both chambers.
Cuomo did not offer a detailed explanation of his push to expand his emergency powers, telling reporters that “these are uncharted territories” and that “government has to respond.”
The whole process was rushed, in typical Albany fashion. Word came Monday afternoon that legislation would be coming to the floor from the governor’s office, Gottfried said. The state’s health commissioner, Howard Zucker, had met with Assembly Democrats for a briefing, making no mention of the need of additional emergency powers.
The Assembly and Senate hardly debated the bill. It passed both houses after midnight, with little time to read it or seek outside counsel. The Senate approved the measure 53-4, while the Assembly voted 120 to 12 in favor.
Though New York law already allows Cuomo to suspend provisions of any state or local statute that would delay in coping with a declared disaster, the new measure goes further, broadening the definition of disaster from a “past occurrence” to something that is “impending.”
Way to go. You’ve just weaponized the nanny state.
“That nuclear reactor at Indian Point could have a melt down in 50 years. It’s an impending disaster! Shut it down forever!!”
“Too many gasoline cars are driving too fast on the Thruway. It’s an impending disaster!! Ban them all; all cars must be electric with a top speed of 45mph!!”
“Guns in the home could lead to so many more accidental deaths. It’s an impending disaster!! Disarm the public right this moment. All violators will be shot!!”
“Electing somebody else as governor could ruin all of our Progressive achievements. It’s an impending disaster!! Andrew Cuomo is now Governor For Life, to be followed by his first born son and his son thereafter! Or his brother Fredo, if he feels like it.”
Warren Drops Out
Meh, I’d hoped she last at least a week past Super Tuesday. Nope.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren dropped out of the 2020 presidential race Thursday after a disappointing Super Tuesday in which she failed to win even her home state—a development that could boost Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ campaign by making him the lone progressive standard-bearer in the Democratic field.
But, while making the widely expected announcement outside her Cambridge home with her husband Bruce by her side, the Massachusetts senator declined to make an endorsement at this stage.
“Not today,” Warren said, noting that she wanted more time to think about the decision.
Her exit essentially leaves the race as a one-on-one battle between Sanders and former Vice President Joe Biden, who is surging after claiming a stunning 10 victories on Super Tuesday. Warren first revealed the decision in a late-morning, all-staff call on Thursday.
Well. let’s not forget that Tulsi Gabbard is still in it too, and after winning ONE delegate in Samoa she’s qualified to be in the next debate. Unless the DNC changes the rules again, but doing so would be actively shutting out a Woman Of Color, so that’s bad optics. And she’s a she, and decades younger than either of those other too super seniors, plus the military thing and so on. So maybe her star is about to shine forth. Let’s see what happens.
Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.
Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
