This is something even beyond depravity, but I can’t think of the word.
No surprise. Just look at the creep.  Hunting for words and can’t find the right ones.  The same for the second article.  This sort of thing just drives me up the wall. It’s so easy to correct and yet the hand wringing fools won’t see it, thus creating future victims.  Even if this country didn’t have strict (for law abiding) gun control, these women would not have stood a chance. Possibly the younger of the two might but it’s doubtful.  Not many 90 yr old ladies in need of care would have one.  So it’s up to the state I think, to remove forever the sort of walking filth like this nigger and the vile white trash in the 2nd article.

Only a week ago, Justice Secretary Ken Clarke went to great pains to reassure critics who feared his apparently soft policy of jailing fewer criminals would mean allowing even violent thugs to remain at liberty.

In unequivocal language, he spelt out to the Tory conference: ‘For serious criminals, prison is the best and only sentence. It is the punishment for serious crime that society expects and accepts.’
And to remove any shred of doubt, he added: ‘Career criminals and violent, dangerous criminals should be in prison – not roaming our streets.’
What a difference a week makes.
Today, the Sentencing Council turns those fine words on their head, issuing draft rules which will mean – you’ve guessed it – thousands more violent thugs will be free to roam our streets.
Incredibly, attackers may avoid jail even after a conviction for causing permanent disability or disfigurement.
For under the guidelines, expected to come into force next year, judges and magistrates will be instructed to look leniently on a wide range of mitigating factors, including the assailant’s youth or immaturity.
What difference does a thug’s age make to the victims of a vicious attack – or didn’t anyone think of asking them?

Why oh why do judges inform the criminals what they’ve done and make a speech about it. The rats don’t wanna know and care less.
There are crimes where there is no doubt about guilt. Yet this sub human scum had a lawyer, making excuses for him.  Someone who does this kind of thing really needs to be dead, and his defender along with him.

‘Depraved’ gang leader who forced 91-year-old woman to perform sex act on her carer jailed by horrified judge

A depraved gang leader who forced a 91-year-old woman to perform sex acts on her elderly carer at knife-point was today jailed indefinitely by a judge who branded the case one of the most ‘sickening and harrowing’ he had ever heard.

Michael Lewis, 21, recorded the violent and humiliating ordeal on his mobile phone as a ‘trophy’ to show members of south London’s Brixton Hill Blood gang.

Passing sentence, Judge Roger Chapple said the attack showed there were ‘no limits to the depths of depravity that some will descend to.’

Known as ‘Joker 187 General’ - the number referring to the American code for murder -, Lewis cut the phone line and threatened to kill his terrified victims.
The carer was making her way into the pensioner’s home when Lewis, who had pulled his hoodie down over his scarred face, approached and forced his way in.

He then subjected the pair to the humiliating attack, forcing them to perform a series of sex acts until he fled warning he would return if they called the police.

‘The reasons for your behaviour are to me entirely unfathomable,’ the judge said.

‘The ordeal suffered at your hands by these two women has properly been described as horrific.

‘The emotional scars you have inflicted upon them are deep and permanent. I am faced with a defendant who, for no reason I can begin to understand, has committed behaviour of the utmost gravity.

‘You were not affected by drink or drugs and have no disability. What you did fills me with utter revulsion.

Send fewer thugs to jail and save £20m a year, judges and JPs told

Judges and magistrates were yesterday ordered to send fewer violent thugs to jail.

New guidelines mean those guilty of grievous bodily harm or beating up a police officer will remain on the streets rather than going to prison.

And courts will be told to count the youth or remorse of an attacker as a mark in their favour.

The guidelines could mean:
- Between 1,000 and 2,800 fewer offenders jailed each year for common assault.
- Between 300 and 900 fewer jailed each year for assault causing actual bodily harm.
- Between 200 and 700 fewer jailed each year for assault on a police officer.
- Between 15 and 50 fewer jailed each year for assault with intent to resist arrest.
- Between ten and 30 fewer jailed each year for causing grievous bodily harm.

Evil teenagers who ‘tortured’ autistic boy, 17, for three days free to roam streets after judge fails to lock them up

A family has reacted with horror and disbelief after a gang of teenage thugs who subjected an autistic boy to a terrifying three-day ‘torture’ ordeal walked free from court.

The gang used a mobile phone to film themselves carrying out depraved assaults on their 17-year-old victim.

During a sickening spree of violence the three thugs kicked and stamped on his head, repeatedly punched him in the chest, beat him with a tennis racket and then threw him down a steep embankment.

Mobile phone footage showed the yobs laughing and joking as they made him endure other abuse and, in a final humiliating assault, they applied adhesive tape to his genital area before ripping the tape off.

But Jack Bolton, Andrew Griffin, and Nathan Marshall, all 18, walked free from court.

Last night the teenager’s family, senior police officers and an MP branded the sentence ‘a joke’ and called for it to be reviewed.

His aunt, with whom he lived, said: ‘The things that these boys did to him were awful and disgusting. In my book they could have killed him and need to be jailed. The sentence is a joke. I can’t believe they have got off so lightly.’

Injured policewoman on sick leave for 8 years sues force ‘for not giving her holiday pay or long service medal’

A tribunal into a former police officer seeking damages from the force she worked for heard that some officers on sick leave hate the police so much they can never return.

Alison Doyle, who spent eight years on sick leave from Northumbria Police, claims she was never able to return to work after an attack on the beat.

She already had a painful back problem from a previous car crash when she made an arrest in October 2001 which turned violent. She claims the scuffle caused her existing injury to become unbearable and never returned to work, although she remained with the force.: ‘She could not even perform administration tasks because of her enmity towards the police force.’

Her long-running dispute that she deserved a medical pension reached the High Court in November 2005. Lawyers for the Northumbria Police Authority challenged the doctor’s assessment and argued that Miss Doyle’s problems did not amount to a permanent disability.

Mr Wirz said employees off work sick could foster hatred of the force which meant they were unable to return to work.

He added: ‘She could not even perform administration tasks because of her enmity towards the police force.’

Common Sense, RIP

You’re probably like me, everybody forwards the latest joke to you. You’ve heard them all before. You normally trash them.

Well, Mike forwarded this to me. I’ve never seen or heard it before. So I decided to post it. That means that if any ‘friends’ forward this to me in the future, I can say ‘old news, I posted it on BMEWS’.

Kinda rhymes, doesn’t it?

An Obituary printed in the London Times - Interesting and sadly, rather
true.

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has
been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his
birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be
remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
- Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
- Why the early bird gets the worm;
- Life isn’t always fair;
- and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don’t spend more
than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in
charge).
His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but
overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy
charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from
school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding
an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job
that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent
to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform
parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and
criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself from a burglar
in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to
realise that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her
lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his
wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;

Surfing the ‘net

I guess that the software we use to ‘browse’ the internet are called ‘browsers’ for a reason:

So, I was ‘browsing’ and came upon not one, but two of my childhood favorite comedians. One was Flip Wilson, who doesn’t have an official site or decent fan page. I may work on that.

The other is Bill Cosby. He has his own official site. But I found a bunch of his quotes. Here’s some of my favorites:

WW2 display at a museum covers offensive flag to appease the tender feelings of a few idiots

I had every intention of shutting down my puter after my last post. I’m tired, I’ve been at it for too long today. Then I caught a story so utterly stupid that I think maybe there gonna have to be a three way tie for the dumbest thing I have found. I could not shut down after reading it, I really,really have to share this absolute and totally stupid politically correct hurt no feelings nonsense with the blog world.

Before I get to it.  Which major country was England at war with in WW2?  Hint. Across the channel.  France? Australia? Poland?
I know England was at war with somebody. Ah ha. Germany. They were at war with Germany.  And the govt of said Germany at that time was?
National Socialism. (NSDAP) Could they be Nazis?  I kinda think so. 

The Brit flag is the Union Jack.  What flag was flown by the Nazis?

YOU COULD NOT MAKE THIS CRAP UP.  THIS COUNTRY IS REALLY IN THE DUMPS. I’m just trying to avoid being crude and coming right out and saying they are fucked!!  In a culture where everybody has a right not to be offended ...........

Museum forced to cover up part of Second World War exhibition after visitors got offended by swastika

A museum has been forced to cover up part of an exhibition about the Second World War after visitors were offended by a swastika.

Cawthorne Jubilee Museum mounted a dual display to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain and the role the village and its residents played in World War Two.

But it has been plunged into controversy because of the use of a large red banner with the Nazi swastika emblem, liberated by a soldier from the Olympic stadium in Berlin during 1945 and donated to the museum decades ago.

Less than 24 hours before the museum in Barnsley, South Yorks., opened to the public a decision was made to cover the swastika with a smaller Union flag after over-sensitive visitors complained.

Museum chairman Peter Kilner said the committee acted because of complaints from visitors who had seen the flag in place before the public were allowed in.

But some residents said it was a legitimate piece of village history and should not have been censored.

Mr Kilner said: ‘We had one or two people objecting to the swastika being displayed and we are not in the position of upsetting people.

‘If it was upsetting people, we thought it would be better covered up. One or two of us said “lets cover it up and leave it at that”.

‘Visitors have been happy and the exhibition is a great success.’ The decision has divided opinion, with others in the community believing it should have been shown unobscured, because it was a legitimate piece of the village’s history which symbolised the defeat of Fascism.

Museum president Barry Jackson said that despite the cover-up, he directed interested visitors towards the flag, which along with a large Union flag and a painting of a German fighter being shot down in a dog-fight, forms the entrance to the wartime exhibition.

One complaint was that displaying the flag showed a lack of respect to those named on the village war memorial, he said.

It was donated to the museum decades ago by Louis Jagger, a villager who served with a tank regiment in the battle through Europe in the closing stages of the war.
His unit took part in the victory parade in Berlin, where he acquired the flag, which he subsequently donated to the museum.

It had never been put on display and remained largely forgotten in a storage box until it was unearthed by volunteers for the current exhibition.

By the time the objections were raised, it was too late to remove it from the display so the alternative of censoring the Nazi symbol was suggested.

One visitor to the exhibition said: ‘I was surprised to see the flag covered up in the way that it was, it looked a bit odd.

‘It is easy to move the Union Jack to see what’s underneath. I don’t think displaying that should be an embarrassment, someone brought it back after fighting to defeat the Nazis, after all.’

The Jubilee Museum has been run by the community in Cawthorne since being build in the 1950s.

OFFEND NOBODY

OK, I have a question.  Since everyone has a right not to be offended, what happens if some visitors who happen by are German. And they are offended by the picture of a German plane being shot down by the Brits?  Maybe the pilot of that plane could have been a family member. You never know. What if offense is taken by that?  Will they then cover up the offending photo in case more Germans visit the place?

A few odd balls, nutcases, get offended and the Brit management caves in. That fast. Some Germans reading this might be thinking, why the hell didn’t those folks cave in this quickly when we needed them to.
Answer ... cos that generation wasn’t made up of libtard, toadying, gutless jerks and Brit women wouldn’t allow it anyhow. Not then. Now? Well, you can see. Can’t you?

the eu court says, working fathers in Spain are entitled to take ‘breastfeeding leave.

You just know the world is a very mad place with stuff like this accepted as a matter of normal course. And of course as Spain is an EU member and the rocket scientists at the EU know all things .... well it just follows that what the EU says, Spain must follow.

I mentioned this the other day but didn’t post the story as other things got in the way ....

Spanish fathers entitled to breastfeeding leave

Europe’s top court has declared that working fathers in Spain are entitled to take ‘breastfeeding leave’ everyday, even if the mother of the child is not employed.

The new legislation means that both the mother and father are allowed to leave work for an hour during the day or reduce their working day by half an hour during the first nine months following the birth of a child.

The European Union Court of Justice in Luxembourg ruled on Thursday that the Spanish law caused an “unjustified discrimination on grounds of sex” because fathers do not have the same rights as mothers.

Fathers are currently only allowed to apply for breastfeeding leave if the mother is employed full time.
The Spanish man who challenged the law, Pedro Manuel Roca Alvarez, said his request to take breastfeeding leave from his job in Galicia was rejected because the mother of his child was self-employed.

The top court said such a refusal could have the effect of forcing self-employed mothers to limit their work because the father cannot share the burden.
Not giving dads the same right as mums in this case “is liable to ... keep men in a role subsidiary to that of women in relation to the exercise of their parental duties,” the court ruled.

Breastfeeding leave should now be considered as “time purely devoted to the child” in order to reconcile family life and work after maternity leave.

If the lady who found her home occupied by a bunch of immigrants had turned up with any kind of weapon, she’d have been in a jam for certain.
You can’t even threaten to go and get a knife without answering to the police.
That of course only applies to white, anglo saxon citizens who as a rule are pretty law abiding.  They are also soft targets for creeps and cops alike.

sick and decaying Britain ……….

Things to do and the weather is miserable ... damp,misty English chill in the air ...  Bogged down with a project and took a break and found this. Said screw the break I just had to share this thing.  It’s mind boggling maddening. 

Earlier this week one of the top cops in the country said they’d lost the streets to the punks, who now rule. It was sort of interesting but nothing the public hasn’t known for some time. In other words, nothing new but confirmation of the known.  Especially the victims and the families of.

Today, there was an example of just how much the bastards (yobs to Brits, thugs/punks to us) really do rule.

In the three years since their ‘neighbours from hell’ moved in, Graham Lukes and his partially-blind wife Christine have seen the peace and quiet of their middle-class suburban community torn apart.

From the outset, the ‘dysfunctional’ family of council tenants seemed to take pleasure in making their lives a misery.

First it was interminable noisy late-night parties, then intimidation and verbal abuse.
Bags of rubbish were dumped over the fence, attracting rats.

Bottles of urine were thrown into their pristine garden, and cars were driven recklessly, at high speed, around the square outside.

Mr Lukes, 64, made repeated complaints to police and the council but no action was taken.

The children terrorised the neighbourhood - but he realised there was little point reporting the problems, so he and Christine, 61, simply had to endure them.

Then last week, in the middle of the night, a tin of pink emulsion paint was dumped over his two-year old silver Chevrolet and the tyres deflated.

Mr Lukes called the police and explained what had happened, expecting that finally some action would be taken.

Astonishingly, he was told no crime had been committed. The paint could be washed off, the officer said, and the tyres reflated.

No freekin crime?  Then WTF do they call crime here?  Oh right. My memory plays tricks.  Insulting a protected minority, burning a koran, using the ‘N’ word or the term WOG, questioning if travelers belong wherever they settle. The list is longer I believe.
Wanna hear read worse?  Some of the “dysfunctional families are .....

“PROTECTED FAMILIES.” Can you believe that?  I read but have no idea if it’s actually true.  Protected from what and from who?  The police?
But everything I have just posted above is still not the reason I stopped what I was doing to boot the puter and post this. The following is really a foul, disgusting and very sad commentary on the state of things here.  It isn’t as though this happens everywhere.  And naturally things like this will be well covered by the press. Every day. What makes it so god damned bad is that so far, it is not controlled sufficiently.  If at all.  The punks laugh when they are arrested, and brag to friends and foe alike. They are almost immune.  It’s rare indeed when one of them gets what is coming to him.  Meanwhile there is a gaggle of civil rights lawyers at beck and call to see that the rights of the thugs are not violated.  And don’t even think gun.  Just having one illegally can find you in a very bad fix.  Unless of course you’re a minority member or a yoot of tender age at 13 or 15.

Tormented to death: Pensioner, 80, dies after she falls into manhole trap set by yobs who made her life a misery

An 80-year-old woman died after sick yobs removed a manhole cover from her driveway and she plunged into the hole in darkness.

Jenny Ward, who still worked on a market stall selling jewellery, had been plagued by a gang of youths who smashed the windows of her home and taunted her for several months.

The thugs’ campaign of harassment eventually ended in tragedy when the pensioner returned home and fell into the trap late one night.

Her cries for help went unheard for three hours until she was finally rescued by firefighters.

After spending a month in hospital and enduring an operation on her foot, Mrs Ward went to live with a relative, but took a turn for the worse and died in hospital on September 8.

Blackpool coroner’s office said Mrs Ward died after a blood clot formed in her lung caused by deep vein thrombosis.

However, friends and neighbours of the pensioner, who had run a market stall in Blackpool for 50 years, said she had never recovered from the campaign of torment and her fall into the manhole.

They have accused police of not doing enough to deal with anti-social behaviour and urged them to find those responsible.

They said that in the weeks leading up to the manhole incident she been scared to return to her home on Shetland Road, because a gang of around ten to 15 teenagers would gather regularly outside her home.

Here’s an old lady still working at age 80.  Chances good the thugs who did this are collecting “benefits.” I’m certain you would not bet against that.
Here’s an old lady, alone and afraid because she was getting verbal abuse and she had her windows smashed by yoots.  Scum of the worst sort. This old woman didn’t deserve what happened to her or the treatment she received at the hands of criminals. She will not be their last victim.  You can take that to the bank!

man loses dog, dog has chip implant, info where doggy now is can’t be given to him.  huh? read it.

What do ya make of this? 

He could have reported the missing dog to police and that might have established proof of who he is. 

Anyway ... really seems weird as I thought that was what chips were for.  Lost pets easily returned to owners.  Isn’t the name of the owner on that chip?

Animals not doing well here lately.  Also in this weeks news, another cat in a bin but this time id did end up at a dump. Fortunately it was okay and returned to owner as it was tagged. 
Worse however is the case of some scum bag or maybe more then one, who has spiked apples with nails and pins and tossed them into a horse pasture.
Bastards like that if caught should be made to eat it themselves.  That would be fitting.

Microchip firm won’t tell dog owner who has stolen his pet

A man who had his dog microchipped before it was stolen cannot be told where the animal now lives because of data protection laws.

Dave Moorhouse’s Jack Russell terrier Rocky was stolen from his home in 2007.

But when Mr Moorhouse asked for the address, Anibase, the microchip database, refused to pass on the details, claiming it would breach the Data Protection Act.

Last week Mr Moorhouse took his case to Huddersfield County Court, asking for a court order forcing Anibase to release the name and address of the people who have Rocky.

But the judge ruled that the matter was outside his jurisdiction and that Mr Moorhouse should pursue the matter with then police.

Anyone can just about beat any rap when there is hardly any serious retribution.  Oh yeah, I forgot.  There’s this myth that authorities seem to be enamoured of.  Namely that you can “shame” miscreants or hardened criminals into changing their ways.  Bull!  Was a time in western culture when folks tried to hide some of their more base activities because once upon a time people did feel shamed.  No more though. 
When something as stupidly gross as the Osmond family and Lady Ga Ga become icons of a generation, when pop stars lecture heads of state, hells bells.  You gotta know the world has tilted on its axis.  But what really, really convinces me that not only is the world a mad and crazy place, not only misguided with the west a failing culture ….  but one can commit treason and be rewarded with financial success and a reasonably happy life thereafter.  No Penalty … pass jail go directly to the money pot …..  NEVER FORGET and NEVER FORGIVE this TRAITOR!

Or is this only being seen here and not the USA?  No, probably alive and doing well in the states I imagine.

However, if they want to build an Obamosque in NYC, then I demand a Catholic cathedral and a Hebrew-Jewish Temple (and, btw, a Mormon Temple) in both Mecca and Medina. I also demand unrestricted access to both ‘cities’ by non-Muslims.

Just in the alleged interest of ‘outreach’ and ‘inclusion’.

health and safety in a risk adverse culture … can’t mow the castle lawn due to steep slopes ..

In an article today in the Telegraph is a mind numbing story of complete stupidity for which there is NO link. As usual.  So you will simply have to take this on faith that I am not making it up.

Something tells me however that Richard Littlejohn of The Mail will have this in the next couple of days with a link.  But I can’t wait till then.  Nor can I take the time to copy word for word the entire article.  So, I will give you the simple nut and bolt (there’s only one) and photos and history of a place called Carlisle Castle which is absolutely awesome.  While searching for the story link I discovered news on a BBC site of a decade long dig at the castle site, uncovering some 80,000 Roman artefacts including a human louse, 2,000 yrs old.  Unbelievable, huh?

For centuries and especially after it came under control of The English Heritage folks, there have been grounds keepers.  No surprise there. Right? We’re talking castle here.  And keeping the grounds means mowing lawns. Does it not?  The castle survived wars and sieges and was also one place where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned.  It is as you would expect it to be, a major tourist attraction.

The center of countless wars and battles, guarding England’s northern border against Scottish invasion, under siege during the English civil war, the folks who look after this historic place have found something that is … “too dangerous” to do around it’s walls.
MOW THE FREEKIN GRASS ON THE SLOPING BANKS OF IT’S MOAT!

Yup … there ya go BMEWS.  HEALTH and SAFETY officials now say mowing the grass on the banks of either side of the moat is “too perilous for workmen due to the steep inclines.” And so cutting the grass has now ceased. 

There isn’t any info on the numbers injured or killed over the last few hundred years while keeping the slopes trimmed.  It occurs to us doesn’t it, that had the Health and Safety Executive been around 900 years ago, this place might never have been built.
Or if it had, there’d have been no slopes and maybe no moat either.

These idiots are killing their country with their risk adverse politically correct everyone is equal left wing socialistic libtard bs.  Their embrace of diversity which they have turned into a religion and their romantic ideal of multi-culture as a cure all and a standard to be enshrined. 
They don’t deport plane hi-jackers on grounds of human rights, they can’t deport a killer to a country of his birth because he no longer speaks that language he’s been here so long, and it would violate his right to have a family.  Meanwhile of course, he’d destroyed another’s family.  The former govt. turned their police into social workers, or they tried anyway, and I have no idea if the rope that tied their hand is now loose.

And oh btw ... I forget.  Someone was hurt there .....  here’s an example of the sort of lunatic bs they’ve brought down on their own heads.

Concern was heightened after an out-of-court settlement earlier this year to a woman who was injured when she fell into the moat at 2am, when the castle was closed. In spite of the closure and warning notices, she won £15,000 compensation and English Heritage also paid her legal fees of £37,250.

Another article on her said she was trespassing.  Well I guess so. At 2 in the morning?  What else?  See, according to my barbaric belief, trespassers at 2am need to be shot dead.  Problem solved, no law suits, no courts, no public expense. 

The ppl responsible for the mess this country is dealing with, have betrayed their history and their ancestors.  They shame the generation that stood firm in ’39 and before that 1914 and before that their entire history.
Shame on them and a pox as well.  They don’t deserve this country.  If things aren’t turned around soon, they will surely deserve what they’ll end up with.

Carlisle Castle’s decade dig is completed

An internationally important archaeological dig in Carlisle has unearthed rare articulated armour and a nit comb, with a louse still in it.
The dig, which took place over a decade in front of Carlisle Castle, has uncovered about 80,000 Roman artefacts.
The evidence provides Carlisle with almost 2,000 years of documented history.

Experts say the city is now ranked as one of the most important settlements in the north of England.
Senior executive officer for Oxford Archaeology North, Rachel Newman, said: “The area was very damp 2,000 years ago, and therefore rare evidence survived for how the Romans and their medieval successors lived, in the form of the foundations for their timber buildings, as well as parts of Roman tents and saddles, their shoes, and wooden and leather possessions.

“Many thousands of objects were excavated, including less fragile material, such as pottery, metalwork, both jewellery and everyday utensils, coins, and stone objects.”
“All this evidence provided a wonderful glimpse into how people lived 2,000 years ago, and also in medieval Carlisle, more than 1,000 years later.
“For instance, several nit combs very like the ones we sometimes have to use today were found, one with a human louse in it!

“We could also see from the numbers of bones that the Romans liked beef, and particularly shoulders of meat, that had perhaps been salted or smoked.”
She said the evidence suggested that the Roman army arrived in Carlisle, living in tents to begin with, until the first fort was built.

Carlisle Castle guards the western end of the border between England and Scotland. William II built the first timber castle at Carlisle in 1092, and thirty years later his brother, King Henry I, ordered the building of a castle in stone which included the keep that now remains as the oldest part of the castle.

The keep and castle walls were eventually completed by the Scottish king, David I, who took control of northern England during the troubled reign of King Stephen (1135-54). By 1157 the castle was back in English hands, but its location at the border between two frequently warring nations meant it would be battled over for many more centuries. The last time the castle came under siege was in 1745 when the Jacobite forces of Prince Charles Edward Stewart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) successfully captured the castle, only to be forced to surrender the following month.

The oldest surviving buildings, other than the keep, are the inner and outer gatehouses, both built in the 1160’s and substantially altered in the late 14th century. Most of the other medieval buildings have been lost under the 19th century barracks and other army buildings that line the inner and outer bailey. The castle remains the headquarters of the King’s Own Royal Border Regiment and it houses the Regimental Museum.

A benefits claimant whose partner is expecting her 12th child boasted today that they ‘have enough for a football team’.

Out-of-work Gary Bateman, 46, and Joanne Shepherd, 36, have been moved into a free five-bedroom house in which to raise their brood.

The £1,200-a-month rent on their home is covered by the more than £30,000 a year they claim from the taxpayer.

Fiona McEvoy, of the Taxpayer’s Alliance, said: ‘It’s disgraceful that this family is being given more than taxpayers earn, our benefits system needs real reform.’

But Mr Bateman, 46, said: ‘People should mind their own business. We’re not doing anyone any harm. It’s a nice place. We outgrew the last house. It was a bit of a nightmare being on top of each other.’

Speaking about his partner’s 12th pregnancy, he told The Sun: ‘ It was an accident. Something happened that wasn’t supposed to. We’ve enough for a football team.’

Mr Bateman says he has been out of work for as long as he can remember.

His partner Miss Sheppard, who currently has 11 children by three men, has not worked for 19 years after she fell pregnant with her first child aged just 17.

Breast-feeding at the Y…M…C…A…

Elizabeth Gomez , a mother of three from Medford, said she was told by a Y employee to leave the baby-sitting area of the North Suburban YMCA after starting to breast-feed her three-month old son earlier this week.

“She said there is no eating or drinking within the (babysitting) area,” Gomez, 36, said in an interview Thursday. “She told me I had to go out into the hallway . . . I said ‘I have a lawful right to be here.”

I’m… well, not sure if ‘appalled’ is the right word. ‘Flabbergasted’? Yeah, I’m flabbergasted that:

A) anyone would use that against a breast-feeding mother. This was the baby-sitting area. Would it have been okay to give a baby a bottle? Rules against eating and drinking target unwrapped food and open beverages for sanitary reasons. I’ve never heard such rules used against baby bottles or, in this case, breasts.

B) “I have a lawful right to be here.” True and sad. Massachusetts actually had to pass a law to allow women to breast-feed? That’s sad. Just because breasts have a secondary use as play toys for boys doesn’t mean there’s anything immoral about breast-feeding in a public place.

A state law protects mothers who breast-feed in public. It states that a mother, “may breastfeed her child in any public place which is open to . . . the general public,” and where the mother and child are lawfully present.

A spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Breastfeeding Coalition, which pushed for passage of the state law, said the Y incident is an example of how employers don’t understand the state law, which has been on the books since April, 2009.

“Breastfeeding is not the same as opening up a lunch box with apples, bananas, and crumbs that are going to fall onto the floor,” said Marsha Walker, a board member of the nonprofit coalition based in Weston. “Breastfeeding is nutrition, but it’s a little different because a mother has to provide it.”

Q.E.D. I’m not actually shilling for breast-feeding, but I do wish people wouldn’t go nuts over a natural mother-child interaction.
