Linky Link

Fellow blogger Duane Lester sends me a link to his own blog post hmmm where he has almost 2 dozen photographs by Russell Lee Klika on display. Klika is a professional photographer, and he’s really good. Most of his pictures have that certain-special-something that I can’t quite describe, but I could call it the National Geographic Look. It doesn’t hurt that he uses a Nikon D1X either. He’s spent a lot of time in Iraq, and around our soldiers training stateside. This is good stuff.

You can see a lot more of Klika’s work here on his Flickr photostream page. All the images are copyrighted, but this one (my favorite) made the cover of a magazine. So here’s a picture of the cover of the magazine. All of the other 300 or so pictures are just as good. Enjoy.

All that is glitterati is not gold

Artist unveils solid gold statue of drugged out skank model Kate Moss. British museum puts it on display. “We are not amused” fumes gossip columnist.

His sculpture of Moss said to be the largest gold statue to be made in the world since the time of Ancient Egypt.

Speaking about choosing the supermodel as a subject, Quinn said: “I thought the next thing to do would be to make a sculpture of the person who’s the ideal beauty of the moment.”

The 50kg statue will be displayed in the Nereid Gallery of the British Museum, alongside other statues such as Crouching Venus, a Hellenistic model of Venus surprised while bathing.

Quinn’s latest work, which shows Moss in a yoga pose, is part of a collection, entitled Statuephilia, by contemporary artists going on display at the British Museum.

It is the second time the London-born artist has used the model as his muse. He previously created Sphinx, a white-painted bronze sculpture of the fashion icon.

Quinn is also known for Self, a bust of his head made from eight pints of his own frozen blood.

image

But not everyone is in love with the idea ...

A new, gold statue of the overexposed model is the last straw for Celia Walden

Celebrity body parts, like brand logos, quickly start to grate. Elizabeth Hurley’s breasts, David Cameron’s Eton slick, Angelina Jolie’s lips, Hillary Clinton’s ever-gaping gob, Victoria Beckham’s alien sunglasses and her husband’s six-pack are as unavoidable and wearing as a stubborn pop song.

But nothing, nothing sands down my psyche more relentlessly than one little pinched visage, reproduced with a bulimic intensity by the media the world over: Kate Moss.

Go read the rest. I thought it was a decent claws extended full on catty ripping up.

I don’t see that much of Kate Moss. I don’t read gossip mags, I don’t read the fashion mags, and I don’t watch the kiddie channels like MTV where her face is likely to appear hawking some clothes or something. So it’s kind of rare for me to even see her picture ... and when I do, I notice she seems to be less drugged out and skinny looking, and might actually be rather noticeable. Attractive maybe even. But like I said, I’ve missed the whole Kate Kulture thing, though I can understand those who have simply overdosed on it.

Is she still involved with that pasty faced little greaser junky Petey Doherty? The guy who looks like a walking STD? Gak, I hope not.

Eagles’ in-flight .  Something worth seeing and a break from the usual.

Gee these are beautiful.  Nothing for me to add.

Eagles’ in-flight food fight
By Paul Eccleston
Last Updated: 1:01pm BST 13/08/2008

A white-breasted sea eagle with a six-feet wingspan expertly scooped up a fish at Seven Mile Beach in the Kiama area of New South Wales in Australia.

But as it soared effortlessly into the skies with its prize the adult female was buzzed by her own fledgling daughter.

image

An aerial dogfight developed with the screeching adult desperately trying to drive off her wilful and hungry daughter.

After a melee lasting several minutes the adult bird was forced to release its grip on the fish which the adolescent then quickly grabbed.

Photographer Shane Chalker who lives nearby managed to catch the tussle on film.

“Taking photos of these birds is how I got into photography but they have always been too far away and I couldn’t get close enough until now,” he said.

“It was an amazing sight, they made a screeching noise unlike anything I’ve heard before. The young bird was certainly rewarded for its efforts.”

The eagle is Australia’s second largest bird of prey but it is equally at home in the coastal areas of India through China to the Philippines.

image

Because of its size most of its hunting is done from in a gliding attack with the raptor swooping down on its prey which includes all types of fish, eels and birds such as coots and gulls.

EYE CANDY FOR US SENIORS

Yeah I know it isn’t politics or moonbat stuff but when I saw this in the paper I just had to share.

It’s like, really old stuff still has value. Except this is a digital camera and it fits in the palm of your hand. Not sure how easy that is to work.
I LOVE this sort of stuff, but I don’t miss 35mm. I do miss working in a darkroom tho.  Anyway, you guys might already have seen this but it’s brand new to me.
The link below has other views.  Kinda pricey tho.  Heck, for 300 bucks I could get a notebook, or upgrade my dsktop pc, or buy a bigger camera.  But I like the idea and the looks.

Not to worry tho. I’ll get back to blood and gore and crime soon.  And that’s just politics.

HOORAY FOR HOLLYWOOD !

Lockheed During WWII
Lockheed During W.W.II This is pretty neat--special effects during the 1940’s:

During World War II the Army Corps of Engineers needed to hide the Lockheed Burbank Aircraft Plant to protect it from Japanese air attack.
They covered it with camouflage netting to make it look like a rural subdivision from the air.

Gotta hand it to Hollywood set designers as well.  Just something of interest that isn’t politics or crime.

Here we go again

Death On Display - It’s Art !

Here we go again. Another looney tune “artist” looking to create some kind of shock event, “push back boundaries”, and “open discussions”. As if. This time some whacko German wants to find a volunteer, someone from a hospice, willing to die in public while other people watch. That’s “art”.

What a sick fucker. How callous can you be? He’s taking what ought to be a private moment, a time of last words, final prayers, and ultimate release, and reducing it to a public spectacle for voyuers to gawk at. These “artists” need to be institutionalized, and I’m beginning to think the “performance artists” need to be drowned. In a vat of urine naturally, and then put on display.

The prizewinning artist Gregor Schneider, enfant terrible of the German cultural scene, is looking for a volunteer who is willing to die for his — that is, Schneider’s — art.

He wants someone whose dying hours will be spent in an art gallery with the public admiring the way the light plays on the flesh of a person gasping for the last breath.

Prizewinning? What award did he win, Asshole of the Year? And the purpose of the art is admire the play of light? What horseshit. Just possibly, maybe, you could make a bit of art from this subject’s last moments as a kind of personal passion play, focusing on the contrast between pain and suffering, and the relaxing of the will to live and the escape into the arms of God. Maybe. But that’s more theater than art, and why the stage has all those famous death scenes. The same goes for film. It’s the enhancement of those scenes, the creation of an artificial moment, that allows the playwright or filmmaker to force the focus of the moment to shift from the event itself to a greater meaning. That’s art ... transcending a microcosm into something greater. But it gets there by starting with an artificial situation. This guy wants to take real death, real pain, real loneliness, real suffering, and call the disinterested witness of it art. Scumbag. Send his neo-nazi ass to Darfur so he can be surrounded by his “art” 24 hours a day. And with any luck he’ll become a part of his own works. How’s that for transcendence?

Politicians and curators are in a state of uproar about Schneider’s plans. The 39-year-old artist has been concerned with death for much of his career. He gained critical acclaim for a sculpture, “Hannelore Reuen,” of a dead woman. He has been hatching his current idea since 1996, and now has a sympathetic pathologist and art collector to help to find a candidate who wants to become a work of art in the final days of his or her life.

Right. So we’ve got a sick fucker who has been suffering from depression for at least a decade, “concerned with death” the morbid little asshair. I bet he pulled the wings off of bugs as a child and gloried in the “creation of the moment”. One heavy canvas jacket please, with extra extra long sleeves. Nutcase. And he’s drawn others in to his circle of bullshit. Not surprising; there’s always some gullible dope who can be conned by “artists”.

Death is commonly seen as the last taboo, but artists have been trying hard to demystify it. Gunther von Hagens, nicknamed Doctor Death, has been traveling the world with an exhibition of plastinated corpses, showing genuine human bodies in living poses, playing chess or on horseback. The Wellcome Collection in London has an exhibition of portraits of people pictured before and after death by two German photographers.

JC on a flaming pogo stick, what the fuck is with these Germans? Didn’t they get enough Death Appreciation 65 years ago? Has the whole damn country turned into Hannibal Lecterstein? What next, outright murder as “the emancipation of performance art”? I’ve got an idea ... let’s get this death cult bunch of sickos to focus on suicide. There own. And they can record it while they perform it in front of all the other sicko artists. With any luck, they’ll all join in, and we’ll be done with them once and for all. These people are clinically insane.

The influential gallery owner Beatrix Kalwa spoke for many German curators who rule out the idea of giving space to Schneider’s artistic endeavor.

“Existential matters like death, birth or the act of reproduction do not belong in a museum,” she said. “There is a fundamental difference between portraying these acts in an art form, and showing them in actuality.”

The head of the German hospice foundation that provides care for the terminally ill, Eugen Brysch, said: “This is pure voyeurism and makes a mockery of those who are dying.”

Well at least there are two people with functioning brains left in Germany. That’s a start.

But Schneider, who feigned his own death as part of an exhibition in Germany in 2000, argues that death is already undignified and that his aim is to restore its grace.

Sorry Fritz. If you didn’t actually die then it wasn’t art, it was just street theater. So try again, Ok, and this time keep it real. Oh, and do it alone. You know how the act of observation changes the true meaning of the event, therefore the grace of it has to be diminished. So hang yourself in the dark so that not even you can see it, and you’ll create a perfect moment. We’ll be over here with the rational people, eating pizza and having a beer, and not pay you the slightest bit of attention. That’s what you deserve for your “art”. Fartbubble. What. A. Loser.

UPDATE - Macker points out that this is a hoax.

Ok, Macker may be right. It may be a hoax. I went and read his link. I have some problems with the author’s arguments. I think he has an emotional barrier, because of his wife’s miscarriage, that causes him to cling to “proofs” that may not be totally valid:

However, the author makes an update, and links to an article in the NY Sun that says Yale says that this is all a scam.

Yeah, well, that’s what you’d expect them to say isn’t it? Ivy League School plays Cover Your Ass at hypervelocity. Certainly Yale would never have a student this mentally twisted. Wanna bet? What kind of over-the-horizon ideas do Yale students come up with from time to time? The Sun article tells us about a molecular biology professor there:

A science student of Mr. Silver’s once proposed impregnating herself with chimpanzee sperm. Mr. Silver convinced her it was a “horrible thing for her to do,” but his fictionalized account of the event became a book and a play.

So what’s the takeaway here? It is possible that this woman did what she did. It is possible that it’s a made up story. The only thing for sure is that articles in the Yale newspaper now have to be taken with a larger grain of salt.

LATEST UPDATE: “Artist" stands by her story? Or is she playing coy just for publicity?

Shvarts stood by her project, calling the University’s statement “ultimately inaccurate.”… Shvarts reiterated Thursday that she repeatedly use a needleless syringe to insert semen into herself. At the end of her menstrual cycle, she took abortifacient herbs to induce bleeding, she said. She said she does not know whether or not she was ever pregnant.

“No one can say with 100-percent certainty that anything in the piece did or did not happen,” Shvarts said, “because the nature of the piece is that it did not consist of certainties.”

Oh brother. This is one screwed up young woman. Anything for attention?

This afternoon, Shvarts showed the News footage from tapes she plans to play at the exhibit. The tapes depict Shvarts — sometimes naked, sometimes clothed — alone in a shower stall bleeding into a cup.

Oy, such ART.
And the really Big Lie?

She said her endeavor was not conceived with any “shock value” in mind ... it’s not the intention of the piece to scandalize anyone.

I suggest that the entire concept of “performance art” be tossed in the trash. Dance, Theater, and maybe a few episodes of “Punk’d” should cover things. I’m starting to think that “performance art” to “start a discussion” relates to real art about the same way that puns relate to good literature. It’s just spoiled little children pitching a fit to get attention.

Equal Opportunity Gun Ownership

Oleg Volk is an artist and activist.  His photos on self-protection are deep and striking.  So when a site called “Social Images” published a number of his posters in an attempt to demonize the “gun culture”, the grassroots have come to call a spade a spade.

Wander over and politely toss in your $.02.

Equal Opportunity Gun Ownership

Some of the first comments come from the left:image

These are bizarre and terrifying, but I’m not sure how widely spread they are. I’m not sure it is right to attribute them to the “pro-gun lobby.” I’m not sure what the “pro-gun lobby” is in this case. The website these images come from seems to be the project of one individual. Are these images used by the NRA?

I just want to clarify where these come from. It seems relevant. They totally freak me out, don’t get me wrong, but I need a little more information before I make any judgements about the site they come from. Incidentally, they seem to come from this website originally. Not the t-shirt website.

The idea that the only way we think we can make a safer, better society is for everyone to carry a gun is incredibly sad. It’s also individualistic--the answer to racism, rape, and gay bashing is to carry a gun, not have any form of social organizing.

And I doubt that if women started shooting men who attempt to rape them that would be seen as “empowering” in our culture--particularly since most women are raped by people they know. We’re already suspicious of women who say they were raped by someone they were on a date with; what happens when women start shooting them? I’m doubtful this will be accepted as a positive change. image Remember the reaction to Lorena Bobbitt? She didn’t exactly meet with social approval--and she didn’t kill him.

I grew up in rural Oklahoma, surrounded by guns. And I know what it’s like to have one family member using guns as a way to control another. I don’t think that my mom or us kids would have been “empowered"--or safer--if only she’d been willing to use a gun too.

The Holocaust ones are particularly offensive. When the agents of the totalitarian state come for you, they always come in groups. What are you going to do, pull your gun and have three of them shoot you before you can shoot one of them? Either way, you’re just as dead.

A friend of mine was trans-bashed in Baltimore by a gang of six guys. A gun wouldn’t have helped him, and in fact might have gotten him shot with his own gun—you can really only point a handgun at one person at a time.

The solution to reducing crime isn’t more guns, it’s a better-functioning society.

Of course, Oleg got to answer the detractors

Oleg Volk

As the author of the images, I am curious what makes them terrifying to you. The aim of my effort is to empower others.

What was their collective response?  [cue crickets]

(Drew decided this needed a couple of Volk’s pics so he stuck them in.)

Hippies on Parade

I’ve gotten on a mailing list for a group called “Chalk 4 Peace”.  I normally just delete them, but I was bored and decided to read it through.  Mind you, I’m not a world-class writer, but I can turn a phrase, compose a fairly well-written letter and communicate fairly effectively with the written word.

This is a different story.  What I find here is a cliche-laced screed that really doesn’t say anything meaningful.  I suppose that passes for communcation these days, but if I was an actual subscriber to their “news”, I would have a hard time deciphering what we were about.  Here’s the email, see what you think. (emphasis mine.  Also, no editing, correction or formatting on my part.  This is just like it came in)

... Eleanor Roosevelt

Our basic human instincts drive us to seek safety. This is what this chaos is all about. Our essential human survival instincts are acting out of context with the wider global cultural need resulting in mistrust, fear and conflict.

Everywhere the media bombards us with WAR TALK, distractions and negative belief patterns that encourage us to believe that the future of our world is out of our hands entirely.

One place we still have communal access to, is OUR STREETS.

We can balance our GLOBAL CONVERSATION with collective self-expression using OUR STREETS AS OUR MEDIA[It’s all about ME, ME, ME!!!!  -Mr. C.]

We don’t need to be an artist to Chalk4Peace. Every statement, however small or large becomes part of the amazing tapestry that is our global future.

This unique event conceivably, could be the largest of its kind in
modern history. It is a global effort that is happening.

We The People are spreading the word and making the effort to be a part of this huge creative endeavour to bring Peace back into the equation.

Welcome to Cleveland

Via Google Sightseeing

The story goes that one day in 1978, MarkGubin was having lunch on the roof of his building...in Milwaukee, with his assistant.  They were commenting on the low-flying airplanes which were heading into the General Mitchell International Airport.

“Wouldn’t it be nice to have a sign welcoming everyone to Milwaukee?”, she asked.

“You know what would be even better?”, he replied.

image

That’s right, he got out his paint can and a roller and prceeded to write “Welcome to Cleveland” in 6-foot letters on the roof.

See it in Google Earth here.

Cleveland wanted to know if he was making fun of them, a favorite sport back then. The answer was, yes, a little.

Someone in Cleveland invited him to come there and paint a sign welcoming travelers to Milwaukee, but he was too busy making a living. He heard that someone else near Mitchell painted a roof sign saying “YOU ARE NOW LEAVING CLEVELAND,” but he doesn’t think that was true.

Here are two other things he’s been told over the years. Supposedly there was a regular Northwest Airlines flight from Denver to Cleveland that would announce to Milwaukee passengers just before landing here on a stopover that they had not missed their stop, despite what the sign says. And the security people who hover overhead when the president visits say they use his roof as a landmark because it doesn’t do much good to single out just any old roof or steeple.

That’s a good one.

Lost!

This is where I’ll be landing in late August.  I just made my reservations for a conference in this fine city.  Last time I was there, my hotel faced the water you see to the right and I could watch a number of aircraft flying about.

This particular airport handled about 17.4 million people in 2005 and over 152,000 tons of cargo.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
