Imperial Walkers are scheduled to be deployed next year. Darth Rumsfeld has commanded it! The Death Star is on track for 2012. Be afraid!

“Independence Day”

Memo From The Skipper: Everyone out there have a safe and happy Fourth Of July weekend. Especially you guys and gals over in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is because of you that we can celebrate our Independence Day this week. Keep the sand out of your boots and your ammo dry. There’s an ice cold beer (or two - or three - or more) waiting for all of you when you return. OOH-RAH!

USAF Photo

The improved U-2S Dragon Lady, Block 20, aircraft taxis to the runway at Osan Air Base, South Korea. Osan AB was the last forward operating location to receive the new Block 20 aircraft. The U2S is the latest modification to the famous spy plane. This new version includes a larger wing and fuselage and F118-GE-101 turbofan engine. The U2 is set to be retired permanently in 2007, to be replaced finally (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) with global satellite coverage.

Is anyone out there old enough to remember Francis Gary Powers?
Does May 1, 1960 ring a bell?
Nikita Khrushchev?

Tower Bridge was completed in 1894, after 8 years of construction. It is one of the world’s most famous bridges. 150,000 vehicles cross it every day. Over 900 times a year the roadway parts and lifts to let tall ships, cruise liners and other large craft pass through.

Hmmmm. While the North Koreans and Kim Jung Il are playing around with their overgrown firecrackers, the Pacific fleet is just tooling around somewhere off of Guam ... roughly 1600 miles (1400 nautical miles) south of Pyongyang - playing “war games”. Purely a coincidence. Nothing to see here. Move along now.

The Gloriette was built in 1775. Today, the inscription of the middle part of the building still bears witness: “JOSEPHO II. AUGUSTO ET MARIA THERESIA IMPERANTIB. MDCCLXXV” (Erected 1775 under the reign of Emperor Joseph and Empress Maria Theresia). Even then, one appreciated beautiful views - and for that reason a 20-meter-high observation terrace was created (accessible only via a spiral staircase).

“Bali Hai”
-by-
BigFoto.com

(click image for larger 1200 x 900 in popup window)

Bali, a tropical island in the Indonesian archipelago, is so picturesque and immaculate it could almost be a painted backdrop. It has rice paddies tripping down hillsides like giant steps, volcanoes soaring up through the clouds, dense tropical jungle, long sandy beaches, warm blue water, crashing surf and friendly people who don’t just have a culture but actually live it. In Bali spirits come out to play in the moonlight, every night is a festival and even a funeral is an opportunity to have a good time.

Bali Island, the perfect holiday destination for all ages offers something for everyone. This tropical paradise has a unique blend of modern tourist facilities combined with wonderful shopping and a rich past and heritage. The Balinese people are proud of having preserved their unique Hindu culture against the advance of Islam, the dominant religion throughout Indonesia.

This is still reflected in day to day life and can be seen in the numerous ceremonies, Balinese festivals and magnificent temples and palaces. Some of the best surfing beaches in the world can be found on the western side of the island whilst conversely the eastern side is a wonderful haven for families, with beautiful white sand beaches and gentle seas.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
