The Mysteries of Nature

Doe Fight!

I live surrounded by deer. I see them all the time. Every day, all year long. Singles, pairs, small groups, herds of 20 or more. They are everywhere. They come right up on the patio and peek in the windows. They graze on your lawn in the middle of the afternoon. They run across the roads and scare the bejeezus out of drivers at dawn and dusk. And they eat everything. You can not plant a tree nor have a garden unless it’s got a really sturdy 8’ fence around it, and even then you cross your fingers and hope. We are overrun.

And I’ve lived here for well over a decade. So I thought I’d seen it all when it came to deer. I’ve seen them in rut, I’ve seen the baby fawns still wet and wobbly. I’ve seen them eat, play, eat, sleep, eat, hide, eat, ... you name it. If there are 3 trees and a bush here, odds are there is a deer hiding behind them.

But until this afternoon I had never, ever, seen does fight. I didn’t even know they could. Or did. While yelling at each other! Go figure. Do does have a pecking order, like chickens? Beats me. And why fight now? It isn’t anywhere close to mating season. It’s almost fawning time.

I was heading down to Flemington about a quarter to five this afternoon, going down our main road to the corner. There’s a bit of woods off on the right, about an acre. And a little scrap of scrub brush right across from the corner, a little thin triangle of land between the highway and the entrance ramp that is the west end of our connecting road to town. I doubt if it’s a quarter of an acre, but I know that more than half a dozen deer live in there most of the winter, under the eye of an 8 point buck. The sun was out a bit today, and it was maybe 40°; nearly warm for this early in Spring. And the does were a-frolic.

So driving up to the corner I saw this movement in that bit of scrub land in front of me, some gray-brown motion behind the gray-brown tree trunks and leafless gorse bushes. And in a little clearing there, I saw 5 deer having a fight. Well, two fighting, and three watching. Damnedest thing I ever saw.

No, this is not my video. Somebody else shot it, in late summer, over in PA. I didn’t get any pictures; I was just too amazed. But I’ll tell ya, the two deer in that video are amateurs. The does I saw were up on their hind legs ducking and weaving and running about, easily 30 seconds at a time. And the hoof fight was at least twice as fast as the two half-hearted contenders pictured above. I mean, man, it was on!! And the bleating! I knew deer could vocalize. You hear them in the fall when the rut kicks in, and sometimes you hear the mommy does calling to their fawns. But these deer were cussing a blue streak and having a major hissy fit on each other. I just sat there in my car with the window open, watching and listening for probably a full minute. A car pulled up behind me and didn’t beep; they were watching too. Then it was over suddenly, and the combatants went their separate ways. Some lifetime I’m going to learn to carry a camera with me everywhere, charged up and ready at hand. I could have had some neat video.

Drink Up, The Water’s Fine!

Thousands of Dead Pigs Clog China’s Huangpu River

Tens of Thousands More Dead From Disease

“Water is safe to drink” say authorities

image

Hey, you want some free bacon with that pork fried rice?

At least 2,800 dead pigs have been fished from a Shanghai river since Friday, but authorities insist that tap water in the city is still safe to drink.

State news agency Xinhua said labels tagged to the pigs’ ears indicated they came from the upper waters of the Huangpu River, which flows through the center of Shanghai and is a source of the city’s drinking water.

It’s not clear why the pigs had been dumped in the river, though local media reported earlier this month that a disease had killed thousands of pigs in a village south of Shanghai.

“We will continue to trace the source, investigate the cause, co-operate with neighboring areas and take measures to stop the dumping of pigs into rivers,” the Shanghai Municipal Agricultural Commission said in a statement posted on their website on Monday.

As of Sunday, water quality on the Songjiang section of the river, where most of the pigs were found, remained normal and the incident has had “no significant effect on tap water supply,” the commission added.

However, local residents and users of of the popular Twitter-like microblog service Sina Weibo have expressed concern that the dead pigs would make the city’s tap water unsafe to drink.

“Huangpu river is the source of drinking water for more than 20 million Shanghai residents. And this horrific incident was only made public when residents started posting pictures on Weibo,” business investor Xue Manzi said in a post on his account.

The agricultural commission said it had tested organ samples from the pig carcasses and the results suggested the animals had contracted a type of porcine circovirus.

According to Professor Fred Leung, who specialises in animal diseases at Hong Kong University, this is a fairly common disease in pigs and not usually fatal on its own.

Pictures showed sanitation workers with sticks retrieving the bloated bodies of small pigs caught up in reeds and debris at the side of the river.

A local newspaper in Jiaxing, a city in Zhejiang province south of Shanghai, reported on March 6 that tens of thousands of pigs had died of an animal disease in a major pig farming village in the past two months.

“According to our records, 10,078 pigs died in January, another 8,325 died in February. More than 300 pigs die everyday in our village, and we barely have any space left to dispose of the dead pigs,” a local villager was quoted by the paper as saying.

Huh, and it was just about this time last year that I was writing about another bunch of dead pigs in China.

And rampant pig disease in China is nothing new either.

Good Dog

A Labrador retriever named Kentucky is being credited with helping authorities find the body of its owner, who died hiking in a nature preserve in northern New Jersey.

West Milford police tell The Associated Press that a search team saw the dog’s eyes reflecting off headlamps during its search late Saturday of the heavily wooded and hilly Apshawa Preserve.

Nearby, the team found the body of 51-year-old Bjoern Waalberg, who had apparently died hours earlier.

Police say Waalberg and his dog set out for the hike mid-afternoon Saturday. The man’s wife alerted authorities just after 7 p.m. when he did not return. His body was found just before 10 p.m., his dog close by.

Authorities say the hiker’s death does not appear to be suspicious.

Semper fi, pooch.

Damn You Khan!!!

WTF? The weather people are naming snowstorms now? Getting a mite big for their britches, doncha think??

Khan Brings Ice and Snow to South, Mid-Atlantic and Midwest

Winter Storm Khan brought a swath of snow from the Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic on Friday. Parts of the South, including southern Kentucky, eastern Tennessee, northern South Carolina and North Carolina have seen significant icing from the storm.

While snow and ice will continue to impact the Friday afternoon and evening commute from the Mid-Atlantic to North Carolina, we expect the storm to move out to sea by later in the evening. Dangerous travel conditions will persist through the overnight into Saturday morning for areas that have seen accumulations of ice, sleet and snow.

We got just about half an inch here. Big deal. But there is not a breath of air moving, and it’s mighty cold out, maybe 10 or 12 degrees. So the light coat of snow makes everything sparkle like diamonds under the lights. It’s beautiful, but it’s so cold I don’t even want to stand by the window for more than a couple seconds. BRRR.

just fun stuff with a cat discovering snow.

Just for fun, say hello and welcome Fletcher.

A YouTube user known as jefcharles uploaded the delightful clip, with following explanation:

‘After being sent home from work the first thing I did on getting home was to check outside the back door to see if there were any cat paw prints. There weren’t, so I thought I’d introduce Fletcher to the snow and film the results.’

A Man And His Mutt: Coyote Attack!

A Washington man was attacked Friday by three coyotes while he took his dog for a walk near an elementary school in the town of Kent, which is south of Seattle

The Seattle station reported that Faron Scarberry suffered bruises on his knuckles and scratches on his left arm in the attack and was forced to receive 26 rabies shots.

Scarberry was walking his dog- a puggle- when he was approached by the pack. One lunged at him and another took hold of his pant leg and started shaking.

Scarberry said the coyotes likely wanted to put his puggle on the menu, but he managed to resist the attack and the coyotes ran back under a fence.

Wildlife experts said this December is the time of year coyotes are out searching for their food. And coyotes eat just about anything.

So fine, man and dog escaped with minor injuries. But by being the sheep and not the shepherd, there are now several hungry coyotes with a history of attacking people lurking in the vicinity of an elementary school. Nice going dude.

Claudia Johnson and her kids frequently walk the area near where Scarberry was attacked. She said her cat was attacked last year in the same neighborhood.

“We kept our animals in for quite some time after that,” Johnson said.

Oh great. You mean these human attacking coyotes live right there, have been there for ages, and no one has done anything? Damn glad it ain’t my kids going to that school.

Faron Scarberry, who lives next door to a school, wants to get the word out about the frightening attack before the wild animals strike again.

“They were coming around the bush and I guess they were going after my puggle.” Scarberry said.

Scarberry was walking his dog in in Kent near his home when the dogs approached.

“One of them lunged up towards me and I kind of pushed it away with my hand and its front claws scratched my hand and wrist,” Scarberry said. “Then one of the grabbed me by the pant leg and started shaking my leg so I just started kicking and hitting at them to get them off of me and they ran back under the fence.”

...

“The elementary school is right at the back of our property and the kids walk here to and from school,” Scarberry said. “I don’t want any of the kids to get hurt.

Gee, funny how the edited down version of the story at Fox News neglected to mention the guy’s call out for some kind of animal control solution. You know, for the children.

The Legendary Outback Glue Snake Strikes Again

Snakes On A Plane!!

Snake clings to plane wing during 2 hour Australian flight

Stunned Qantas Airways passengers watched out their windows as a large python clung to a plane’s wing during a two-hour flight from Australia’s northeastern city of Cairns to Papua New Guinea.

The 3-meter (10-foot) python fought to stay on the wing, pulling itself forward only to be pushed back by the frigid wind.

Passenger Robert Weber videotaped the struggle and told Australia’s Fairfax Media that the wind whipping the snake against the side of the plane left a bloody smear.

The python managed to hang on until the plane landed in Port Moresby, but a Qantas spokesman said the creature was dead on arrival.

Ok, now somebody tell me how the damn snake got up on the wing in the first place. And how the ground crew managed to miss it during the pre-flight? What, do the Aussies park their airliners under trees or something, or out in the middle of mangrove swamps? Crikey!

your daily free cuteness wallpaper, courtesy of BMEWS. And indirectly, the federal government

One way or the otter [must RESIST otter puns. must resist. must resis ...]

Via Sondrak, who didn’t ‘splain it so I’s could unnerstan, some sort of good news from California.

U.S. scraps ‘otter-free zone’ in Southern California waters

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has decided to allow sea otters to roam freely down the Southern California coastline, abandoning its program to relocate the voracious shellfish eaters from waters reserved for fishermen.

Federal officials determined that their sea otter trans-location program had failed after 25 years and thus they were terminating it, according to a decision published in the Federal Register on Wednesday.

“As a result,” the federal notice said, “it allows sea otters to expand their range naturally into Southern California.”

Federal officials turned Southern California into an “otter-free zone” in the late 1980s after moving 140 otters from Monterey Bay to San Nicolas Island, about 60 miles off the coast of Ventura County. The idea was to establish a reserve colony of otters in case a disaster, such as a catastrophic oil spill, wiped out the otters along the coast.

In a deal cut with fishermen, the government declared waters south of Point Conception to be off limits to otters. It promised to round up any that strayed into forbidding territory. Initially, officials attempted to capture and relocate these wandering otters to Central California, but some swam right back to Southern California. Others were found dead shortly after the move.

Because, like, you know, wild animals that live in the ocean can be restricted from swimming around in specified areas. For their own good. Because the government maybe cut a deal wit da union. So’s if youse ottas knows whas good for youse, youse won’ swim rown here no more. Capice?

So the feds made a sanctuary area, in case some “natural” disaster or other kind of terrible mishap messed up their regular natural habitat area. And snagged a whole bunch of sea otters and put them on some island in that sanctuary. Funny thing, being sea creatures, they swum right back to their regular old area. And got caught again. And swam right back ... until any number of them died mysteriously.

So for 25 years, the feds have been running a sea otter wildlife refuge area that never had any sea otters in it. And harassing a severely endangered species - often unto death - when they swam into ocean waters the government had agreed were reserved for shell fishermen.

Sea otters victorious in decades-long struggle with U.S. government

The long war between otters and the U.S. federal government is finally over, and the otters have won.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has abandoned its plan to relocate otters from coastal waters reserved for commercial fisherman.

For the past 25 years, the government agency had been working to relocate the otters, but was finally forced to admit the program had been a failure.

“As a result,” it allows sea otters to expand their range naturally into Southern California,” reads a notice published in the Federal Register.

In the late 1980s, the federal government attempted to relocate about 140 otters from Southern California’s Point Conception to a location in Central California. However, some of the otters simply swam back to their original habitat while others died shortly after being moved. Officials say part of the plan was to establish a reserve colony of otters in case a natural disaster were to strike their main habitat.

An August 2012 release from the U.S. Geological Survey says the wild otter population has been decimated from its previous heights, while efforts to rebuild the population have been “slow.”

So there you go. So everyone otter be happy, sea ought to be happy, si? [resist Drew, resist!!]

Only problem is that the sea otters are still dying. And not breeding too well. Turns out they have brain parasites, Toxoplasma gondii, that they get from swimming in polluted water. Water that “treated” sewage is dumped into. The parasite lives in house cats, and gets into the water system when people flush the litter box contents.

Probably the only solution is to cook or boil the cat feces before dumping or flushing them. WTH, it’s for the endangered sea otters, after all. There’s no otter way [must must must RESIST!!]

Should Have Used A Telephoto

California man killed in Alaska by bear he was photographing

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – About 200 square miles of Alaska backcountry terrain where a California hiker was mauled to death by a grizzly bear remained closed Sunday as investigators continued to piece together what happened.

Weather permitting, rangers at Denali National Park were planning to recreate the steps taken by 49-year-old Richard White, of San Diego, before he was attacked Friday afternoon near the Toklat River, park officials said. Before the attack, White photographed the male bear for at least eight minutes from a distance of 50 to 100 yards.

The weather was poor Sunday, with low clouds and rain contributing to low visibility. Park spokeswoman Kris Fister said that when the weather allows visibility, park pilots will fly over the area to look for other backpackers believed to still be in the general vicinity or heading in that direction. Fister said rangers might also go on foot to alert—not evacuate—the party believed to still be there.

The photographs in the recovered camera show the bear grazing and not acting aggressively. Spokeswoman Maureen McLaughlin said the bear did not even appear aware of the hiker until the final photos, which show the animal looking toward the camera.

A few hours after the attack Friday, hikers stumbled upon White’s backpack roughly 150 yards from his remains, McLaughlin said. The hikers also spotted blood and torn clothing, and immediately hiked back and alerted staff park.

Rangers in a helicopter spotted a large male grizzly bear sitting on the hiker’s remains, which they called a “food cache” in the underbrush.

A state trooper fatally shot the bear Saturday. The bear’s stomach contents were examined and found to contain remains and clothing that confirmed it was the animal that killed White, Fister said Sunday.

[ Oh God, I’m such a cynic and I’m going to Hell ... but I can’t resist this ... ]
Sometimes you eat the bear, sometimes the bear eats you.

Not only a great big telephoto, but a really tall and sturdy tripod. One you can stand on, 20 feet up. Because 100 yards is too damn close, and 50 is begging to die. Otherwise, go the other way ASAP when you see a bear. Because people are only the apex predators on Wall Street. In the forest without guns, we are snack items.

not quite Hi-Yo Silver

The sun comes in VERY BRIGHT and very strong at this time of evening, in the kitchen which is located at the back of house. Which is on the other side of the wall behind me. So I went in and made the dumb mistake of looking straight at the window for some odd reason. Now I am typing betweenh the damn sun spots which I can’t shake. Frustrating.
None of which is the subject of this post. Oh wait. I just made it a subject.
I have something just as frustrating to share. Not that anyone beside myself will care. You’ll most likely think this is a waste of time and space. But it isn’t to me.

We have been at this location since April 28 of 2004. I’m not great on dates but I remember that one.  I wonder if people who are in jail remember the date of their incarceration after X amount of years, in the same way.
But this isn’t about jail and loss of liberty.
It’s about the mesmerizing and welcome clippity-clop of horses hooves as they travel through our little street. And it’s frustrating because, ever since we got here I have wanted to photograph them. Better still, a little video so the sound could be recorded as well. And for all these years, each time I have heard them, I have missed the chance because by the time I hear them, they are gone.

It does not happen every day and very often it can be a few months with no sightings or sound. And each time I hear them and look up they are going past.

Sometimes it’s a carriage with a single horse and sometimes a two horse carriage. Once a few years ago, there was a very large carriage with a bride being brought to her church for her wedding. As I have mentioned in the past, we are in semi horse country here. And due to the huge overgrown hedges and and such, I have not got many pix because there is no clear view. So anyway, one went by today and as usual I missed it. Crying in my tea I told my wife, well there’s another one missed. And she said, why don’t you call them and see about the price for getting a ride?  Say WHAT?  Am I hearing things? What are you talking about? How do I do that?  Oh she says.  They advertise in the Parish Magazine and I think they’re here in our village.

SAY WHAT?

Here?  You mean, here as in the country or here as in Winchester?  No she says. Here as in our village but I’m not certain where. Huh? Here? In our village?
Yes says she, and hands me a copy of the little paper bound forty page 8x9 inch paper magazine. She opened it to the page with a badly printed ad and shiver me timbers.  A small ad and an address. Been here all these years and they’re only down the road. Not on the main road but a side road. It’s just down the hill from the end of our street. They even have a web page. It could be a lot better designed I think. And the photos are too small, but apparently they are not hurting for business.  So I think before the summer is over, and with much depending on my wife’s health, I want to contact these folks with the hope that their price for a short ride around the village just so I can video everything, is not too costly.  Meanwhile, in lieu of photos I’d like to have taken over the past years, here’s a screen shot of part of their page. Click on it for info and some postage stamp sized photos. There a tiny photo album there also.Click on the gallery tab at the right. You will notice also that the tab marked prices has an invite to contact them for that direct. Must be expensive then. I guess we’ll find out.
